Virtual MSCS Cluster physics to physics of MSCS Cluster passing

I have a MSCS Cluster of SQL running on Windows Enterprise Server 2003 2000. I need to move nodes in this cluster as a virtual machine. I have searched using a variety of terms and read a few large documents, including vi3_vm_and_mscs.pdf, but I have not found a single shot high level or low level description of the steps that must be taken.

So far, I have has all the cluster resources to node in the cluster physical and used Converter P2V Enterprise the other node. It worked well. I must now get the quorum drive and other shared drives seen by the new virtual machine. I know that this will require of RDM, but I wonder if there are traps, that I should be aware, or if there is a white paper or a best practices document detailing the process of virtualization of a node of an MSCS cluster direct.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You will have to:

The LUNS of existing data/quorum at the zone ESX Server

Rescan your ESX storage adapters

Stop the virtual machine, you want to add the ROW

Add a disk, raw device mapping, physical compatibility mode, select the Lun you zoned in, find the SCSI ID, select 1:0. This will create a new SCSI adapter

Change the new physical to be bus SCSI adapter shares

Start your virtual machine, and you should be able to see the new drives

    Hello

I have 2 physical Windows 2003 servers (IBM Blade / SAN boot) and MSCS with SAN lun data.

Now, I don't want to migrate cluster node1 virtual machine on ESX 3.0.1and stay node2 cluster on the physical computer.

the safest would be to create a 3rd node (virtual) and add this to the cluster and then expel the old physical node, rather than perform a P2V

  • Physical/virtual MSCS & vMotion

So, I've spent the last few days search and document clustering options in vSphere 5.  I came to understand the warnings and limits with each type of save this:

Are the vMotion & DRS valid limits in a MSCS physical-virtual 2008 r2 cluster?  All documents and forums I read set out clearly the purely virtual cluster cannot be vMotioned manually (although it doesn't seem to work if a host goes down), but I don't see anything that indicates the same when a physical host is the mixture.

Can someone clarify the situation?  Of course, I'll be testing in a lab environment but wanted further clarification before submitting this project from design to management.

It does not change if there is a physical box into the mix.

The virtual SCSI adapter must still be in the bus, sharing mode, which prevents from vMotion.

  • VCenter server virtual installation vs. physical

Could Hello everyone, you give me advice on how to implement Vcenter server in Vsphere 4.1? Physical or virtual Vcenter server installation? Thanks for your help

I used vCenter virtualized servers in environments of production for a couple of years now... I did first minus 3.5 and did in 4.0 and 4.1 with no problems at all... Performance of the vCenter Server (in production environments) has never been a problem due to using enterprise grade, powerful host servers storage and put them in place properly (all the environment too)...

Beyond the benefits already mentioned to go with a vCenter Server virtual (that I've seen in action) I'll second the mention of make it easier to administer all of your environment... The savings are not to be rejected either... Not only can you save by not having no no need to have another Canon of material (even if it's the one you had in hand and simply re - purpose it) you save on power and the breakdown of costs (not a small amount per year on the old boxes)... There is also the added benefit of the higher speeds of communication (VM for VM networks run very fast)...

With respect to the complexity that it could bring your network... Not really... Unless you are about to run out of IP addresses on your network (which would require either expand your subnet to allow more addresses or add another subnet within your DHCP server) you can just assing the IP address of the virtual machine (really simple) i.e. the vCenter Server... Unless you have hundreds of servers, you should not need to another range of VLAN / subnet for the virtual environment...

I think you're really too complicate the coast network of things too... Think of it this way... Your host servers are intellectual property will 10.1.1.x, if you place the vCenter Server on the same IP range (a single system more on this beach)... You place your VM on the IP range, they are too (can be the same, may be different) linking the port of Machine Group virtual host NIC to physical switch ports correctly. Depending on your storage/SAN, you plug these host ports to correct physical switch ports...

Do not plan things for how things are going to interconnects. That being said, it is not a surgery of the brain here... I advise you intend having redundancy at the physical level of switch NIC and host for all connections... As two NIC for the management of the network, x 2 NIC / ports for traffic of the VM port group (depending on the size of the cluster/County of VM, you will need to have enough connections to support the claim), x 2 NIC / ports for SAN connectivity, etc... This is why I generally 8-10 NIC / ports in each host I've implemented (production level hosts)... This includes (in general) the four s Integrated NIC, so adding a pair of dual-port, or a quad (always class Intel server NIC is there), or a combination, to each host.

If you're having trouble designing the configuration of your network, view information such as the physical switches (and how the ports are configured so divided into several VLAN) for regular traffic and SAN connections, host configurations (include the two how many ports on board and through additional cards), SAN brand/model (and how which many network/controllers there how many ports per controller) etc... See also how you plan to put it all and will help people here making sure what did it right (or even better for the environment, in which it is to enter)... If the network is already installed, works well, and looking just to put more things in place (within the cluster) is something else...

  • Simulating multiple virtual channels per physical channel

I have make steps high speed with several channels simultaneously and am wishing to be able to store the raw data and the version to the unique scale of the data both in tdms files.  However, I am wanting to be able to apply properties for the versions on the scale and not scaling separately, mainly to keep the data clean and usable, as well as to ensure that in 6 months when we look at the old data to establish anything confused reports.  I know that several virtual channels may be established by a physical channel, but then they must be played in order.  Is it possible to simulate this process, or give an another stream of distinct to write to the tdms file properties?

First of all, media DAQmx LabVIEW 8.2 9.0 and later, so you should be able to use the new feature.  That being said, for your application, it wouldn't work that well, since you are eager to keep the original DAQ signal so a new signal scale.  This function stores the data as you would see in DAQmx Read.  Information of scaling you apply can be performed by using a custom in DAQmx scale, but you 'lose' the original file (RAW).  However, if you store the scale factor in the properties (as explained below), you could get back to the original data at a later stage (by dividing by the appropriate scale factor).  If you buy 2.5 MECH data. / s, you can consider this solution in the interest of performance.

That being said, if you need signals separated for raw and scale, this feature might not do what you are wanting.

Therefore, in answer to your question immediately, if you want these signals to be in the same file, PDM, it's quite possible.  Here are comments by looking at your VI to this effect:

    1. on the PDM write call and son in a 'group name' such as 'Gross' or 'ladder '.  Which splits the data properly to make it obvious what is what.

    2. If you want additional information must be stored with the Group (as the scale factor), wire in your group name in the PDM Set properties VI you have and set the 'names' and 'property values' properly.

3 certainly, wire in the same refnum TDMS to all functions of PDM.

Let me know if you have other questions about it.

    Hello

Your DHCP server must be on a bridged network adapter, it does not work with 'host only '.

Edit: to be clear, I mean the network in your VM DHCP settings, wouldn't "NAT" or 'host-only' but 'bridged '.

  • Virtual performance vs physics

I have a server with dual 8-core CPU with HT. This server will be part of a group of availability of AlwaysOn SQL. I can either install SQL Server directly on this machine so it can use all 16 cores (32 threads) or I can install ESXi 5 on it and deploy a vCPU 32 VM on it (it will be the only VM on this machine). The reason that using a virtual machine is that the server may not require all of the resources and if I deploy it as a virtual machine I can skip the number of vCPU and host other VM's on this machine. The performance of SQL server would be very different if I deploy it directly on the physical server or as a VM 32 vCPU? The underlying hardware is the same in both cases, the only difference is that with a virtual machine, I have the hypervisor layer between SQL server and the hardware.

    Hey Arjanr,

Recently, we did some tests on this and ran Dells Benchmark Factory on a SQL Server to get a good base with all tests SQL standards in the industry.  We then P2V'ed this system even on the same exact host he was already running and then run the Test again.  So the VM SQL is running on the same host, but this physical server now ran just ESXi5.5.  We noticed on a 10% drop in performance between the set of tests, but it's very marginal.  It was also noted that anything after 8vCPU did not really much more performance at all.  The host is a double taking 8 database server.  So we dropped the virtual machine for 8vCPU and set the memory all that we need.  We ran a LOT of development tests in the system and he spent brilliantly so far, but it wouldn't hurt to do a few lines about your hardware first, then try a test p2v, run base lines, and compare.  If the margin is low enough, you will feel sufficiently comfortable to proceed, that if this is not the case, you may need to consider what is casuing the neck of the bottle.

Usually with SQL as a virtual machine, it's best to evolve with several virtual machines rather than transpose, but does not not not saying intensification is impossible, its just usually very expensive.

  • Problem with VMWare Workstation combo, .vhd virtual drives and physical disks in the sector of size 4K?

    All,

I suspect something wrong with some of my virtual machines.  I have been using these virtual machines for a while, and I see some weird behaviour recently.

I see a lot of corruption in the virtual hard disk (.vhd based).  CHKDSK automatically gets performed many large files such as Oracle datafiles get damaged etc...  It all seems quite random and inconsistent, but I am using .vhd virtual machines in VMWare Workstation for years without problem.  This problem is new, and hard drives are basically unstable.

I * think * (and I'm totally off base) that is perhaps the issue with my new external hard drives.  These discs have a 4 KB sector size, without e512.  Thanks to this architecture of hard drive, don't mount not the tools of Microsoft or manupulate .vhd files on these disks.  The questions seem to go away if I switch to vmdk or switch to the physical hard disk size-one-sector 512kb.  Because errors are not compliant, that I don't really have a way to document/prove that is the case, but it seems to be.

I use version 9.0.0 on Windows 7 Workstation, and the guest is Windows Server 2008R2.

    My question is:

    (1) what meaning?

    (2) how I prove/document, since it is a contradiction?

    (3) is this a known problem?

(Btw, switching HDD's vmdk is not an option in our case due to an obscure legal agreement with Microsoft.  I have to distribute my VMs in vhd format, even if they are designed to run on VMWare...)

    -> Adam

These discs have a 4 KB sector size, without e512.

(I've highlighted "without e512" in "BOLD" to key in my answer to the host operating system.)

    -L'OS is Windows 7 Enterprise

According to the political support for the 4 K sector hard drives in Windows, Windows 7 does not support the native 4 K (logical 4 k sector size) but it does not support Advanced Format or 512th (size of logical sector physical and 512 bytes of 4 K) and that is can be the question.

  • where and how much Vcenter must be installed? as a virtual machine or physical host? -config is 2xESXi40 - CX4 - 120 1xEMC2 - DAS mode

    "BEST PRACTICE RECOMMENDATION.

I work with 1 ESXi40 in DAS mode very good and everything is fine.

I have still a few servers production of Phisical aditional to be virtualized, but before that

We cultivate our virtual infrastructure by adding a second Esxi40 and installing the Virtual Center software and license to use HA, Vmotion, etc..

the questions and the thing is, if I'm migrating all my hosts physic to the VMs system, do I need a new physical server to install Virtual Center, yes or no.

    and why?

If this is not the case, the Vcenter can be virtualized, and what is the best practice to do this.

which of the following configuration might be valid, the best recommendation and why and why not.

    (a) create 1 Vcenter VM, located in a data store on the hard drive that comes a host of Esxi40

    (b) create 1 Vcenter VM, created storage located in a data store that comes from the CX4-120, and the group contains 1 ESXi40 physical host

    (c) create 1 Vcenter VM, created storage located in a data store that comes from the CX4-120, and the group contains 2 ESXi40 physical hosts

    (d) create 2 Vcenter VW, created storage located in a data store that comes from the CX4-120, and the group contains 1 ESXi40 physical host

    (c) create 2 Vcenter VM, located in a data store that comes from the CX4 - 120, ahd, the storage group created containds 2 ESXi40 physical hosts

    Thank you

    MC.

    You're too complicate things...

Do the vCenter as a virtual machine, which gives the requirements for processors, RAM, etc... Place it on a data store available to BOTH hosts. In fact, I would make sure that ALL s LUN where sit all VM are available for BOTH ESXi servers.

I recommend also using a full SQL Server for the db, is not using SQL Express. If you have a SQL 2005 server, use it. If you want to future proof, vCenter things, put on a 64 bit OS (so you're ready for vCenter 4.1 and ESXi 4.1). Having the SQL database on a real SQL Server (other than the server vCenter Server/VM) makes things a lot easier on the road...

  • Unique virtual MACHINE fills physical drive twice the size of the virtual disk allocated

I have a VMware workstation 8 that is configured with a 600GO of (non-allocated in advance) disc. Workstation 8 is running on Server 2008 R2. The virtual machine has filled a 1.28 TB drive full of files hard VMware with the naming convention "VIRTUAL_MACHINE_NAME-000001 - s001.vmdk" that increments until completely to "VIRTUAL_MACHINE_NAME-000014 - s301.vmdk.

I also have 14 snapshots. What I find interesting is that I have 14 snapshots and then my files hard increment from 000001 to 000014, so I kind of think that each snapshot file (.vmem) is attached to each set of files hard. Before delete those associated with the shots that I need is no longer, I wanted to check that they are in fact attached together.

My proposed remedy strategy would be a snapshot of delete (say 12) and delete all the files in VIRTUAL_MACHINE_NAME-000012 - sxxx.vmdk.

I understand this well, that doesn't sound like it will work?

    Welcome to the community,

I understand this well, that doesn't sound like it will work?

No, never remove all hard files manually!

The snapshots see you in the Snapshot Manager associated with the files (00000 x) and once you delete a snapshot in the Snapshot Manager, the data in these files are merged into their parent folder. For example if you delete snapshot 9, data will be merged in 8 snapshot, so most probably more these snapshot files. If you want to save disk space, you must delete the snapshots starting with the left-(closest to the basic disk).
