Virus masquerading as Windows disk Fixer...

I had a virus hiding all my desktop, all my favorites internet shortcuts, all my saved... how documents show this?  I know that the docs exist as I can pull it up on "Recent Articles" and they still exist... I know that my favorites still exist because I try to re-register the sites under Favorites and it asks if I want to crush the favorite already in existence...

Hi GregSmith_753,

Please see the following on how to view the files on Vista:

  • The purpose of doing a virus scan after Windows starts in safe mode?

I've heard some suggestions that, in certain circumstances, it is best to do a virus scan after Windows starts in safe mode. So I have two questions:

    (1) would what type of circumstances you perform a scan antivirus in safe mode?

    (2) what are the advantages or disadvantages?

I have found no reliable info that answers to these questions and would be grateful for any info, or even just a point in the right direction.

    Thank you!

    Hello

The advantage is that some process and services are not loaded in Mode without failure there is less chance
This malware can load and interfere with the process. The downside is the same if its best
to run the malware checks mode safe and then in Windows. Or run in Windows and as appropriate
difficult to remove malware is detected then run in Mode safe, then in Windows.

If you need search malware here's my recommendations - they will allow you to
scrutiny and the withdrawal without ending up with a load of spyware programs running
resident who can cause as many questions as the malware and may be more difficult to detect as the
    cause.

No one program cannot be used to detect and remove any malware. Added that often easy
to detect malicious software often comes with a much harder to detect and remove the payload. Then
its best to be thorough than paying the high price later now too. Check with them to one
extreme overkill point and then run the cleaning only when you are sure that the system is clean.

It can be made repeatedly in Mode safe - F8 tap that you start, however, you must also run
the regular windows when you can.

I put t know what laptop you have, but I guess that your laptop was equipped with HARD drive recovery.
This allows you to recover the laptop without using any disk recovery.

Of course, there is an option to create an own recovery DVDs. You read operating instructions!

From my experience, you could use the preinstalled Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator.

I suggest to perform the disk check and check.

    a. click on Start

Note: in this command, X: is a placeholder that represents the drive letter of the volume you want to check.

    a. press y when you are prompted to check the drive the next time the system restarts.
    b. close all applications and restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, repeat steps a through d for the other volume and then check if the disk cleanup works.

    Hello

Netbooks have the option to reinstall the operating system to when it was new.

They have a recovery Partition on their hard drives the same as most laptops and desktops...

You should ask the Netbook Manufactuter for particular key sequence to begin a recovery.

Some manufacturer's instructions are to press F10 or F11 at startup; others are Alt + F10, etc..

The installed software doesn't have knowledge written in programming to realize that you have a Netbook and you are unable to insert the disc. That's the way it is written, unfortunately: one size.

And some more expensive Netbooks now have a DVD player.

  • Need to recover a file deleted by Windows Disk Protection

Yesterday, I created an important file on a computer that has Windows Disk Protection enabled on drive C: (I wasn't aware of this). The computer, and then deleted everything is new on the C: drive, as well as my file. Since then, the computer has been restarted several times and I think that Windows Disk Protection was turned off to install a program, then turned back on, then the cache file has been removed.

I know it's probably a plight, but is it possible to retrieve the file?

First make sure you recycle bin to see if it is there - if so just restore and you're in business.

If you have Vista Business, Vista Ultimate or Vista Enterprise, you can be lucky.  They have so-called saves shadow copies, which are deleted or modified files that can be recovered in case changes/deletions made by mistake.  http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/Windows-Vista/features/shadow-copy.aspx more information about how to use this feature to: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/howdoi/?p=145.

If you have Vista Basic or Premium of Vista, shadow copies is not available; However, there is an alternative that is free and the shadow copies feature called Shadow Explorer. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/recover-files-with-shadow-copies-on-any-version-of-windows-vista/.  Although it will not help you this time, it could very well save you in case this happens again.

In case this does not work (not all files are available through shadow - it occurs periodically), here are some additional free recovery programs that might help:

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/freeware/system/fwdatarecovery.html (first try Recuva)

http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/DiskDigger.html (try this second - if this does not work the chances of recovery are very slim, but you can try other products if you want - it is up to you)

The files are not really deleted until they are crushed (although they are no longer available through conventional methods).  If you decide to try these recovery programs, you should stop using your drive hard immediately in order not to replace the data that you are trying to recover.  He slave on another PC and launch the recovery of this PC.  Even now you have definitely lost some of them if you use the same PC.  If you can not do this (slave on another PC), you run the risk of overwriting the data with every action you do on the PC (but you may still be able to recover some or most or even all files - it's a matter of luck).

Only you can decide if the data is important enough to take the PC to an expert data recovery to recover files (they will have better programs and hardware to do that none of us do, and I've provided above).  Do NOT go to the Geek Squad or one of these centers of store-, they generally don't know what they are doing - it take for expert data recovery.  It will cost you a little and they generally offer no guarantees.  The decision is yours.

Good luck and I hope this helps!
