VM disk size

Hello everyone,

I started using the vCLI perl script and I managed to get a lot of information on my hypervisor thanks to hostinfo.pl, dsbrowse.pl and vminfo.pl.

I have a problem to get the number and the size of the disk of each virtual machine...

It must be easy, but I currently don't found it!

I keep on searching but if anyone has the answer, please help me!

Thanks in advance.

Hello

The vSphere SDK for Perl utilities that are grouped with vCLI are just a few examples of what you can do with the vSphere API, it covers all use cases.

You can easily recover the virtual disk number and it is a virtual machine size looking material device table http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk41pubs/ApiReference/vim.vm.VirtualHardware.html of the virtual machine and looking specifically for the VirtualDisk, from there, you can query all the disks and there ability to http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk41pubs/ApiReference/vim.vm.device.VirtualDisk.html using the capacityInKB property.

Take a look at this sample of vSphere SDK for Perl script which queries all the VMDK (s) of a virtual machine, you can easily modify the script to include the ability:

http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2011/09/how-to-query-VM-disk-format-in-vSphere.html

Also, here is one collection of other vSphere SDK for Perl scripts I wrote and shared with the community, which provides additional examples of working with the vSphere API

http://communities.VMware.com/docs/doc-9852

You can also take a look at my vSphere Health Check Report - http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9842 which is a detailed report on your vSphere environment and it can be easily customized based on the data that you are interested in.

    There is that little clone options b clone the HARD disk which means that you have the mSATA SSD equal or more 1 TB (b) clone c ONLY: This means you the mSATA SSD equal or superior to c:... My suggestion: shrink C: for small size say even 60 GB or 120 GB (if you don't have a lot of programs installed) FRONT of clone and ONLY clone C: normally larger (capacity) is better because you can install more programs that him.

  • disk size problm after copying a large file to the VM then disconnected

    Dear Sir

    I have a VM with allowances dynamic storage virtual hard drive of 300 GB,.

    HE on that disk space is 50 GB.

    Ive copied on it a 100 GB file so now space space disc is 150 GB and 150 GB is free.

    Ive deleted the file 100 GB of the virtual machine, but am supersized now that the file of the virtual machine is still 150 GB in size.

    What should do? as it fits the 50 GB after deleting the file from the virtual machine.

    Hello

    Yes it is planned.

    You have copied a huge file in the virtual computer-> who is the virtual disk in order to accommodate the new file->

    You remove the huge file-> your take off just to comments operating system, the file in the list of the directory->

    Your data is still there, it does not erase the data and rewrite from scratch.

    In order to recover the disk space, you need a number of things:

    -first of all your guests, OS file system must be supported (Windows FAT/NTFS is)

    -Your guest must be stopped

    -The type of the guest operating system disk should not be preallocated.

    -Your host operating system might need a lot of free space on the drive according to your VM disk configuration.

    If stored in several files, you must have a few GB free (size of the Ramdisk / 32) Go, but say more than 4 GB, keep 10 GB free to be on the safe side.

    If your virtual machine is stored in a single file, so you must have your used VM disk size + a few GB of free... for example. If your virtual disk is currently using 200 GB you need tell 204 GB free before starting the operation of a compact disc.

    Then in the configuration of VMware go into settings of virtual machines:

    Use the 'Compact disc' button.

    Be very very patient and wait, because you want to get 100GB which will take some time.

  • How to get the maximum disk size for a powershell prompt

    Hi guys

    I tried all day to get the value of the maximum disk size allocated to a virtual machine. Using get - view I can see the actual size of disc but when I look at VM via 'Edit Machine' I see ' hard disk 1' ability to 40 GB and and size maximum (GB) to 97.5 - How do I get this maximum size via powershell?

    Sparky

    Near there, it is actually the amount of free space on the data store over the current size of the hard drive.

    With this script, you can calculate the value

    foreach($dev in (Get-VM  | Get-View).Config.Hardware.Device){
      if($dev.DeviceInfo.Label -like "Hard Disk*"){
        $dsFree = (Get-Datastore (Get-View -Id $dev.Backing.Datastore).Info.Name).FreeSpaceMB
         $diskSize = ($dev.CapacityInKB / 1Kb)
         $MaxSize = $dsFree + $diskSize
         Write-Host "Maximum size for" $dev.DeviceInfo.Label "=" ("{0:f2}" -f (($dsFree + $disksize)/ 1Kb)) "Gb"
      }
    }

    Hello gydcgreen54,

    Thank you for using the Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

    What kind of computer Gateway do you have?  You made a copy of the a ' drive for a restore point?  Most of the OEM (manufacturers) include a restore on the computer partition. This partition contains 'all' on the computer at the time, it was built and is used to restore the computer to its original state - in some cases that a CD/DVD is also provided. Recovery is to start from a CD or «Press F11...» "message at startup.  Some manufacturers make the partition hidden or inaccessible to protect.

    I also recommend to check with gateway support based on your make and model under/forums.  Please state councillor.

  • Max MD3000 virtual disk size

    Can how big I grow a virtual disk?  As above, I have two servers Dell PE in a cluster failover with Windows 2008R2 Ent. The MD300 contains two Virtual disks 1 x 50 GB of disk as a cluster quorum and 1 x 4TB which holds virtual machines. I would add 2 TB for the largest virtual disk; that would be appropriate?

    The only limit to the size of the virtual disk on a series of Dell's MD3k is the maximum number of physical drives in a single group. For raid 5, it's 30, RAID 10, is 44 and for raid 0 is 45.

    When you configure a cluster, I usually use a Quorum GB 2. If it is an installation of hyper-v I then use 2 disks or more virtual to spread the i/o load. If not for hyper-v, then the structure of the virtual disk depends on the needs of the application and storage.

    Hello

    That said 500 GB:

    However, a 750 GB hard drive might work too. I can't say with certainty that your pc is a desktop computer and this section is for laptops, but the recovery disk/s may not work on a drive that is much larger than the original one in any case.

    Hello

    When I compare the size of the operating system disks, each is 2.6 to.

    But when I look at ASM, they are 2 TB each.

    I'm reasonably sure, not 100%, I've created with external redundancy, so I thought the asm disks would be the same size as the operating system.

  • How to display specific VM disk size

    Hello

    I'm writing a line to display the size of the disc 2 with Get - VM VM and Get-view without success.

    Can someone help me to better understand the ways in which these two order can help to display information from the hard drive?

    Thank you very much

    Kind regards

    Frédéric

    You can, but you'll need to extract all the properties required yourself.

    Something like that

    foreach ($vm in (Get-View - ViewType VirtualMachine - Name property, Config.Hardware.Device)) {}

    $vm. Config.Hardware.Device |

    where {$_-is [VMware.Vim.VirtualDisk] - and $_.} DeviceInfo.Label - eq "Hard disk 2'} |

    Select @{N = "VM"; E = {$vm. Name}},

    @{N = 'Label'; E={$_. DeviceInfo.Label}},

    @{N = "CapacityGB"; E = {[math]: tour ($_.)} CapacityInKB/1 MB, 0)}}

    }

  • The virtual hard disk size

    For worker Analyzer IO VM, it is recommended to create a larger second virtual hard disk that serves as a target IOmeter.

    Is the size of the virtual hard drive exactly the same workload working set size, which means that all data in the virtual disk is read from or written to storage during the race?

    Do you have other recommendations to decide what size the second virtual hard disk should be a VM worker?

    Thank you

    Rebecca

    Hi RS_1, it's useful, but I was looking for some additional tips for the user guide.

    I received responses from some of the developers of IO parser and also ran a few tests of my own.

    Iometer generates its I/O based on the number of blocks of target disc (i.e. the manually added virtual hard disk on the worker VM).  The size of the disk hard virtual will be be equivalent to e/s working set size.

    For a virtual hard drive that strikes only cache, a rule would be its size to 100 MB.

    For a virtual hard drive that hits the disk, the virtual hard disk could be sized anywhere from 10 GB to the top. The drive, / o most actually hits disc rather than cache.

    To do this, I created a 200 GB thin provisioned virtual hard disk for my e/s VM Analyzer worker. As I ran the Iometer workload, I could see the thin disc quickly increase from almost nothing to its size fully provisioned. This means that the new virtual hard disk sectors were continually being read and written by Iometer. Interestingly, it only took about 5 minutes to flesh out a whole 200 GB drive. Obviously, this speed would depend on the type of I/O profile used.

    I also tested a 20 GB disk Iometer vs virtual a virtual drive of 200 GB. Average latency, IOPS / s and flow were all better for 20 GB disk - because a greater proportion of e/s in this case was hit the cache, tilt the numbers positively.

    So, even at the drive hard virtual, sizes last 10 GB, size of the VHD will affect yet observed performance to Iometer.

  • Disk size, disk speed and workflow for video editing?

    I want to edit the video in 1080 p/24 drawn up to four Canon DSLR and the multi camera editing. This will be usually social and professional events, so I expect to have total raw images less than 300 GB in size by the event. My current computer (PC of Q6600) can't seem to handle that very well, so I'm going to buy a new computer. In fact, I bought all the parts except for storage because I have not determined what would be the best configuration. I need your help with this please! What is a good an event video production workflow? And what would my setup disk for this computer?

    Here's what I come up with so far.

    First of all, I put the OS and programs on a small SSD. I have a 128 GB crucial MX100 of the old system. Fact!

    Now for the hardest part - the workflow. I think that after I have the video of an event, I want to save them on the computer and save it. I would like to save the raw images, even after I put the final product. So I think I need a lot of extra space. So, I think 2 x 3 TB RAID 1 for this.

    I think that having this as a media drive would slow me during the editing process, so a fast SSD could be good here. Say an 256 GB Crucial or Samsung SSD. I copy media from RAID 1 disk on that drive, so it would be a working copy. Once the project is completed, I delete all media and copy the files from the next project media here.

    When I finished editing the video, I would export it to another drive. I don't think it should be too big, but the sequential write speed should be fast. On my old system, I have a 3 TB external drive (Buffalo Drivestation, USB3.0) that I can use. I also have a blue WD 1 TB I put in RAID 0 if I buy a second. Would this work better?

    Does make sense? Did I miss something?

    Storage element most important to your system is to buy a Samsung SM951 512 GB SSD m2 or wait a few weeks until the Samsung 950 PRO m2 512 GB SSD is available and install either on your motherboard socket m2.  I would then like he use to all of your files to current project.  When you have finished this project archive on your hard drive or external drive.  If you need multiple direct projects, you can add another standard 6 Gbps SATA III SSD to intermediate stage, or as I do on my X-99 system get a Samsung T1 512 GB USB3 Flash drive. It will be about 2 x faster than your WD Blue or your Buffalo drive.  With your Crucial MX100 is 128 GB, you'll just have to frequently clean the Adobe "média Cache" and "Media Cache files" files which, by default, go to the C: drive to prevent their excessive become large.  This is just temporary files that will get re-created if you navigate to an older project.  In this case frequent probably means that when you change projects.

    Here's Crystal disk mark first tests my SM951 in my X 99, i7-5960 X, 64 GB, computer and other hand the Samsung Q1, USB 3.0, 512 GB, Flash Drive

    . First with our first Pro BenchMark (PPBM) with intensive chronology of disk test, I can write to the SM951 to 1500 MB/s.

    I actually use the T1 of Samsung USB 3.0 on my laptop for all my editing, then take most of the time my X 99 to export and making the disc.  As you can see large sequential files, this is two times faster than hard drives and doesn't have any fall speed because it fills up like hard drive.
