VM (invalid) after deleting a snapshot in VMWare ESXi

All,

I if I could delete any snapshot at any time to free up space on my drive, especially when I need one instant more.

Thus, using the Snapshot Manager, I took a snapshot. Since then, my VM is considered invalid. She is still in progress, but I can't do anything with that (summary is empty, shows considered events null, empty and the console is nothing more than a black window).

Is it possible for me to get this machine? I was about to make a new snapshot... and I really wouldn't want to see my work as missing.

Thanks for any help,

See you soon,.

OD.

I just got the phone with support, and in our case, it was the cake.  On the VM host console, vmware-cmd-l showed all the VMS in the inventory except the one in question.  In Virtualcenter, we have removed the server greyed out which was "invalid" inventory, then re-added.  Now all is well and everything seems normal.

    All-

I came across a bit of trouble.  I was wondering if all you saw this, and if there is a pretty easy fix.

We have a guest Linux running in ESX 2.5up3 managed by VC 2.5up2.  As a precaution I have instant Linux guest in case something has exploded with the new installation of VMWare tools.  I thought I would go one further and clone the machine.  So I deleted the snapshot.  After the removal of the snapshot, the prompt appears as 'Guestname (invalid)' in the inventory, and I can't handle.  The customer is still up and running, fortunately, but I have to take care of that quickly.

Someone at - he never encountered this before?

    Thank you-

I stumbled upon this same question myself.  I was able to fix it by deleting the vm of the inventory and then locate the virtual machine is activated and resave the data store.  The virtual machine appear in valid VC and I was then able to start.

  • After deletion of snapshots cannot start

    Hi all,

I'm new here and I try to do as well as I can...

I have an ESX 3.5.0 with a virtual machine called 'Inventari', this machine and Ubuntu 9.04 inside and 4 clichés:

    1. After a clean install
    2. After installing apache and mysql
    3. After dev a little bit
    4. daily use

This morning, I tried to remove the 4 snapshots using "Delete All" option on the Snapshot Manager, but after a while (when I return to VI), I see the virtual machine has stopped with error messages. It restarts with the error:

Cannot open disk ' / vmfs/volumes/xxxxxxxx/Inventari/Inventari-000001.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

Reason: The virtual disk parent has been changed since the child was created

    I read (and reread): http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1004232 and http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & externalId = 1007969

But nothing works, I can only start the virtual machine to its original state, losing all changes in the last 3 months (stored in snapshots).

If you look at the vmdk files, there is something that do not fit...

And no.... I don't have backups before you try to remove the snapshot (Yes, CONGRATULATIONS MY SON!)...

Sorry, but I can't tell you what happened. With hard files you have, I am afraid that the data has not been validated for the removal of the initial snapshot is lost. Instant channel seems ok now and all the delta files are used, but according to the size of these snapshot files, they were just created and do not contain many changes.

  • Help! VM does not start successfully after the conversion of Server VMware ESXi 4.1

Hi, I have install my first server ESXi, everything seems OK and stable. Had a few PtoV machines, but to start I thought I propose our only current VM from VMWare server on our ESXi server.

The VMware host is Win2003/32 running VMware server 1.0.6 and the prompt is also Win2003/32. I shut down the VM, installed the stand-alone converter on the VMware host and let it do it's thing. Successfully completed and took 20 minutes.

When I try to start the virtual machine of the ESXi server, it looks OK, but hangs on "Application Startup Scripts", possibly the login screen appears, but then I get messages from "Remote RPC server not available" when you try to open an RDP session. A local login hangs right on the application of personal settings.

Network everything seems fine, can ping the VM, etc.

May not work on why the virtual machine should start any differently? Any ideas, anyone please. I am new to ESXi and migrate the virtual computer, but have used VMware Server a lot in the past.

    All advice appreciated...!

    That's good news.

Which explains, normally, you must do the VMTools upgrade, then the virtual machine hardware, so if the converter upgrades the equipment, the order is bad. Of course, it is recommended to upgrade the hardware to ver 7. So now that it works you can improve the tools and then the vHardware. It might be interesting, if you have enough resources on the ESXi host, make a clone to the virtual machine and the test on the clone in a State (disconnect vNIC) offline.

You have more than one snapshot? in this case, you will need to provide arguments to inform additional cli command which instant you want missing. If you want that all went snapshots just use

    VMware-vim-cmd vmsvc/snapshot.removeall vmid

Use the following command to get more information on the State of snapshot for VM

  • Instant VMDK files do not delete after deleting snapshots

Hi - I have a server SLES/OES2 with two discs - 75 and 750 GB.  I deleted a few shots after that test app and I'm back to instant No.  The data store always shows two files VMDK - server_1 - 000001.vmdk (17 GB) and server_1 - 000002.vmdk (56 GB).  The second is still active in this sound change timestamp.

This is the last section of the VMX file:

    debugStub.linuxOffsets = "0x2d1ac, 0xffffffff, 0 x 0 0 x 0, 0xc58223b, 0x0, 0xc582254, 0x0, 0x2d1a8, 0 x 0 0 x 0 0 x 0, 0xc58226c, 0 x 0"

    scsi0:1.DeviceType = "scsi-disk" hard

    scsi0:1.present = 'TRUE '.

    scsi0:1.redo = «»

I got 32 GB free in the data store until I deleted snapshots, then he went to 0 GB free!  I deleted ISO files, and now it's up to 3.7 GB free. The total data store is 1.36 TB

There were not errors when deleting sanpshot - although it took awhile.

All this started because I had forgotten that this VM had snapshots and I started to copy the data to the server and got a warning that server_1 - 000001.vmdk was full and remove the space.

I don't think that the virtual machine is healthy!  Any suggestions?

    Thank you

You can try to power down the virtual machine, taking another cliché and with a bit of luck the entire tree of the snapshot will be detected. After that, keep the VM down and try to delete all snapshots.

  • Snapshot after deletion

    Hi all

If I take two snapshots back to the first, and then delete. I still see the entrance to the first snapshot in putty when I go into the VM directory and grep for delta files.

I shouldn't be seeing as I deleted it.

    I'm under esxi5.1

    Suggestions for this

    Thanks in advance

Deleting a snapshot that is not at the end of a chain of snapshot, would all make the child of snapshot in this useless chain.

Please take a look at the CID/parentCID in the header hard file to see how the different files are interconnected.

  • Can not power on vm after the deletion of snapshots

Hello, I'm afraid that I watered a virtual machine. It's on ESXi 4.1. I deleted all snapshots and now I can not power on a virtual machine. Power on the selection is grayed out.

Is there a way to get back on this virtual machine? I still see the 10G vmdk file in the data store if it matters.

    TIA

How big are the snapshots? Maybe the process is still ongoing! Generally remove snapshots works without problems if you run lack of disk space, so I think you need to just be patient.

  • Delete the snapshot files

I have a Windows 7 VM running on an Intel Mac computer. The size of the VM folder is about 280 GB. A large part of this weight belongs to the snapshot files. I copied the Windows 7 VM on a real Windows 7 machine and its opening perfectly using the VM player and everything works fine.

All I want to do is the snapshot of the files detected, because it takes a lot of space on my disk. I can do by the player, or what I need to do this on the Mac where it all started?

Thank you in advance for your help!

After going through the Menus you see snapshot commands?, no!

While you can run a Virtual Machine that has Snapshots in VMware Player you can only manipulate them with Instances of the ACE.

    Otherwise, some options are...

Add a second virtual hard drive and clone the existing to the new and then swap the VHD on.

Use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and create a new Virtual Machine from the existing.

Install VMware Workstation and use it to delete snapshots.

Install the SDK for the VMware virtual disk and vmware-vdiskmanager allows to create a new hard to replace existing ones.

Back to VMware Fusion and delete snapshots.

  • Do not delete of snapshot

Hi, have a customer with esxi 3.5.  They are run on the local storage and got close to running out of space.  It turns out that one of the VMS had snapshots on it.  So I tried to delete the snapshots via the Snapshot Manager.  Unfortuanatly I ran out of space, before he could finish and it failed at the end of 95%.  Was able to delete some ISO files to free up some more space and then I stop certain VM to free up space in swap files.

Anyway, I was then able to delete all snapshots via the Snapshot Manager, however, he said that he deleted and finished but snapshots files are still there, plus I now how very little space left to even start my VM.

Is it safe to remove manually the snapshot files if the Snapshot Manager says he is not more instant?

    Thank you

    Mike

You can take a new snapshot instant, just after that choose to delete all snapshot again. I will not recommend you manually delete the snapshot. Another method, you can consider to clone the new virtual machine, but this need for additional disk space

  • Cannot change the settings after the take snapshot in VM

Hello forum, I need to increase a disc size and the number of virtual processors on couple of virtual machines, the last week I have instant tool of these virtual machines. Today, when I try to change the settings, I see that the options are grayed out. Why is it so? This is a limitation of vmware. Do I have to delete the snapshots before making changes? Which will remove the ability to roll back changes if necessary. I'm under Windows 2008 R2 virtual machines.

Virtual disks can only increase if they have no active snapshots. The snapshot files contains modified data blocks that correspond to their parent records, and this mapping I lost if you have increased a virtual disk with snapshots.
