VMDK even alert data store size

Hello

I'm setting up a VM SQL in a RAID 10 configuration. So I presented the disks to hosts and created a 1 TB data store (the full disk size)

When I create the thick VM with the same size of the vCenter database start alerting on the data store space.

What can I do to stop the alert in the data store, because it will be used only by SQL

Thank you

It allows to disable all actions call for this specific data store, so not the time vCenter.

Make sure that you are in the correct view "Home-> inventory-> data warehouses and the cluster data store.

If you are in the host and clusters, you can disable alarms on this specifc SQL VM.

  • Best practices for moving to the 1 of 2 VMDK to different data store

I have several virtual machines who commit a good amount of data on a daily basis.  These virtual machines have two VMDK; one where the operating system and that where data is committed to.  Virtual machines are currently configured to store in the same data store.  There is a growing need to increase the size of the VMDK where data are stored, and so I would like these put special in a separate data store.  What is the best practice to take an existing virtual computer and moving just a VMDK in another data store?

If you want to split the vmdks (HDDs) on separate data warehouses, just use Storage vMotion and the "Advanced" option

Converter is not available on this architecture. Can I migrate cold vm to the different data store, no prob.

Question: Without use of the converter, method 3 can be used without a secondary vm? In other words, just by using target vm offline, online, offline? Or is it a problem of signing/OS disk on the Windows Virtual PC?

I need to move vmdk in different LUN and extend drive vm windows on D: (non-OS drive). Is this possible via the single procedure? Options?

To use method 3 to http://communities.vmware.com/thread/81121 requires available vm 'secondary', I did not.

Method 3? Using of vmkfstools and another VM of Windows to extend a drive

o stop the VM to resize

o log in the console ESX Server via Putty

o Type? vmkfstools? X & lt; new size of drive & gt; vmfs/volumes / & lt; storage volume name & gt;. / & lt; virtual server name & gt;. / & lt; the virtual disk name & gt;? That is to say. /vmfs/volumes/Storage1/my_vm.VMDK new disk size can be specified in kilo, mega, or gigabytes and will be the total size of the new disk. So if you want to increase a virtual disk of 20 GB of 24GO you would put 24000 m or 24g

o the second virtual machine to help stop

o change the second virtual machine settings and add the first virtual machine hard drive

o power on the second VM and load the disk management snap-in and verify that the first virtual machine disk has unallocated on it space

o select Start, run and enter diskpart.exe

o the command? the list of volume? This will show you all the volumes.

o select your volume based on the results of the list volume command, IE. ? Select volume 1?

o type the command? extend? to extend the volume

o check again the disk management snap-in and the volume is expected to be expanded with a greater ability

o stop the second VM and remove (do not remove) the record of it

o turn your first VM and the new space should be there and ready to use.

for VI3, vmoiton of storage is made by RCLI plugin or a 3rd party

    I prefer the plugin

    http://www.virtualizationadmin.com/articles-tutorials/VMware-ESX-articles/VMotion-DRS-high-availability/storage-VMotion-SVMotion-VI-plugin.html

In addition, if the option to increase the size of the disk in the VIC is grayed out, it sounds like a permissions issue.  Finally, you can not extend the disc using the VIC, if the customer in question has a snapshot.

  • Gets the data store size

Hello, I do not know if here is righ place to my question if not please tell me where I can post it.

I am attemping the information on the data store size by CLI with order tracking.

    c:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin > vmkfstools.pl "C:\Prograare\VMware vSphere CLI\Perl\bin\perl.exe" - serve
    queryfs-/ vmfs/volumes/v7ksas17 - vihost jvelnx - vm01.tigre.in

work of starts but he asks me user and password for the moment that I run.

I want to move this authentication directly by the CLI only after "ENTER".

    Is it possible? How?

    Thank you

If you use the vCLI under Windows, you can use the passthroughauth - assuming you connect in Windows system with the same credentials that you would login to your vSphere environment.

If this isn't the case, you can also specify the user name and password by specifying it only on the same command:

    for example

    vmkfstools.pl - Server [VC] - queryfs/vmfs/volumes/v7ksas17 - vihost jvelnx - vm01.tigre.in - username [USER] - password [COL]

Also, you can create a session file and then specify that, in this way, you don't need to have your credentials in clear text.

You can take a look at the additional documentation by auth options here - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vcli.getstart.doc_50%2Fcli_run_remote.5.3.html

  • The data store size decreases!

    HII alll,

I have a virtual machine running windows server 2003, with 135 GB hdd, I noticed in the data of this vm store two files from virtual drive...

the first vmname.vmdk with size 135 GB and the other is vmname - 00001.vmdk with 15 GB and gettting increase day after day, until it reached today 18 GB

the free space of data store becomes a decrease coz the vmname - 00001.vmdk file... I don't know what is it? and how can I solve this problem.

It worsen now coz if there is no space in the data store the virtual machine will be down...

    any idea please?

It's a snapshot.  Right click on the VM and go in your snapshot Manager you will probably see it there.

  • ESXI & HP VSA data store size

    Is - well configured?

I have 2 hosts HP DL360P VMware 5.5 with 2 500 GB hard drives with hardware raid 1. iSCSI data store configured with 690 GB of disk space in vSphere. 2 HP VSA is appearing 350GB of storage available. The HP CMC shows 690 GB of available disk space. When I install the volume, RAID10, and available disk space as thick, it shows a maximum of 347GB - because of RAID10 storage space.

My concern is the gap in the amount of available storage space depending on whether display you the data in vSphere (690 GB datastore) store and the CMC showing only 347 GB of usable storage space. So in vSphere it will probably lead someone to believe that there are more storage available there are currently available on the volume.

Is something wrong with that or should it?

Mystery solved, someone has decreased the size of the volume in the CMC, which explains the difference in size.

  • Data store sizes do not correspond to the sizes used all the vm

Hey guys, I'm new in Vmware and I have a background of storage and I wonder if its correct what I see when I compare the total size of all the stores of data vs the 'space used' totals of all VMs running on these data stores.

I see a total of 139 to on data warehouses with 33 to free space and when I add the vm used all space I have a totall TB 138. It's the size of all data stores!

This seems not very accurate for me, I expect the total space used much lower. All the vm uses eager reset thick space.

I hope someone can explain or confirm that they see similar things?

For used space I exported the list of all the vm XL, cut in two the column space to separate the numbers from the gb / tb, changed all amounts of GB space and have XL add up the sum of all spaces.

Hey MKguy, it was indeed your option 1, the RDM

a command simple cli: Get - VM | Get-hard drive - Disktype "RawPhysical", "RawVirtual" | Select name, DiskType, ScsicannonicalName, DeviceName, Parent, CapacityGB

has given numbers for all of the ROW and that's the difference between data warehouses, I have seen and all the used vm space :-)

Thank you very much for your help, much appreciated!

  • Graphing calculator virtual machine by the data store size?

    Hello

I am interested in creating a dashboard to illustrate the growth of space on a data store but by VM as apposed to the entire data store.

I try to help track down when the space used on a datastore jump illustrating changes in the size of the virtual machine, e.g. VM is responsible.

Ideally what I was looking for a graph with all the VM from the store of data that are selected, but I went through a variety of different dashboards and nothing seems to provide the data I'm after.

Is there an easy way to display this type of data?

    Thank you

    Paul

The example I gave was dynamic. You would be populating the graph of a widget of virtual machines. This widget of VMs would be filled by selecting a data store.

You would have 2 resource widgets and widget 1 graph. The free provider, data warehouses, will be simple a list of filters RK DSs. The following resource will receive the DS resource widget interaction and display the 'parent' and also filter by VM RK. When you select the virtual machines, select multiple interaction and it will fill on the chart widget. Then just manipulate it from there.

If you want to get fancy, you don't have to bother with a resource interaction file and throw a metric selector between the VM resource widget and the graphic metric, then you will spend multi select multiple selection interaction and so to the graphic metric... this way you are not stuck to display only a few types of attribute in the GIR.

  • VMware ESXi 5.1.0 VMFS5 maximum data store size

    Hi all

I read white papers on VMFS and I get conflicting answers on the maximum size of a VMFS5 data store.

We are using a Dell EqualLogic PS6100 and linking the LUNS via iSCSI for host servers.

I need to create a data store TB 4 for my file server reside on.

    (A) is it possible?

    (B) are there performance problems with the largest data warehouses such as I want to do.

Block sizes C) must be modified to mount a data store of this size and how you do it.

Any idea or article links would be greatly appreciated.

    Keith

    (A) Oui it is possible but you will need to use a RDM - ESXi 5 allows access to 64 TB but the size of the virtual disk is always capped at 2 TB - 512b

    (B) you must not

    (C) with ESXi 5 block size is no longer a variable that you define for a VMFS data store

  • The data store size is smaller than the virtual disk

Just deploy a new installation of ESXI 4.1 rev3 on a new Dell PE R520 server with 4 disks 1 GB configured in a single Bay RAID5.  When I connect with vSphere and go to Configuration > it shows storage data store being just 740 GB.  However when I go to storage adapters and select the vmhba it shows the complete 2.73 CT of the RAID array that I need to use.  Nowhere I chose Go 740 for the size of the data store, so I don't know how it has been brought to this size.  If I try to delete and re-create 740 GB is the maximum I can create.

What I am doing wrong and how do I create a data store that uses all 2.73 CT?  Screenshots are attached.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ben

    4 ESXi does not support LUNS > 2 TB.  Any increase on a multiple of 2 TB, it's what you'll see (e.g. 2.73 TB - 2 TB =.73 to ~ = 740 GB you see).

But the real question is why you install version 3 year of the hypervisor?

  • Different VM 1 with 3 vmdk in the data store: Migration of data to rename store

    Hello

I'm here today to ask for your help please.

In our Organization, we have 1 large VM

1 vmdk = > The BONES in lun, SAS performance

1 vmdka = > 1 Tera SATA MON only of DATA

Another 1 vmdka = > 1 Tera SATA MON only of DATA

This virtual machine is being tested and we need to rename it to the name of the production.

When you rename in vcenter you do a data store migration to correct all files with the new name.

In this case, how can we specify each VMDK to go to the data store specified during migration?

Because we could all think in the same data store due to the limitation of 2Tera by a data store

    Thanks for your help

When you "migrate" a virtual machine and choose 'Change Datastore' use the advanced option. This will allow you to specify multiple destinations of data store. Use the drop-down arrow in the current [location].

  • Pass a VMDK to a data store to another is not free up space as expected

Hi, I'm ability on my local data store.  To remedy this, I created an iSCSI data store and used the vSphere client to move unused VMDK to it.  Unfortunately, the free space of the local data store won't upward.  I checked the guest VM that I removed the VMDK from and it shows the use of the appropriate space.  In addition, it has none of the snapshots for her.  Any help would be appreciated.

you right-click on the DS in question and choose "Refresh".

  • How to change the vmdk in another data store

for my vm four disks are there I want to increase disk capacity but there is no space on the data store

    Hello

Solution is that you must change the drive to another data store and increase space.

First findout in spatial data store is avaialble.

Select the virtual machine and migration - migration datastore - Advanced - click the drive on which you want to increase space - browse - choose data store where space is available - finishing

    After migration - more space.

  • VMware ESXi 5.0 - "move to" data store a vmdk file has left at the original location

    Hi all

I had to free up space on a SAN data store.  For this I used the function "move to...". "browser data store in VsphereClient.

Did not notice directly but after I moved my E: drive vmdk file, he took no source data store.

How can I make sure that vmdk (the source data store) may be deleted without impact on the vm?

    1. If 'vmkfstools d' report without lock, so I guess I could assume it is safe? Is there another way to check?

2 vmkfstools seems not having the '-d' option in vSphere CLI? (East - this only accessible from ssh console on an ESXi? quid vCenter then?)

In the data store, the files were:

    -Vm\win2k8_data.vmdk [SAN03] (data disk D :)

-[SAN03] vm\win2k8_data - ctk.vmdk (-ctk looks that it has been created by Veeam)

    -[SAN03] vm\win2k8_transactlog.vmdk (E: transaction log 128 GB drive)

-[SAN03] vm\win2k8_transact - ctk.vmdk (-ctk always assuming that it was created by Veeam ~ 8 MB)

    Steps to follow:

-J' turned off the virtual machine using these car

    S ' installs 2 files on the E: drive

-Removed the vm disk (<-my mistake? maybe this step left a lock file? in power vm off?)

-Added the disk from the data store where I copied it

    Thanks for the help!

    behd

    Hi Behd,

The best way to check if the vmdk on the source is not being used would be to add this vmdk to an existing virtual computer and turn on... ? If not used or is locked by one that turns on with success.

If it has an instance running it wouldn't let you put under tension and raise an error of file locking. ?

    Avinash-

  • Failed to create data store on LUN ISCSI

Get the following error when attempting to create a new data store after a new installation of ESXi 5.5U2.

    Location:

    • UCS B200 servers using the VIC-1280 map and
    • Interfaces ISCSI connected directly from the fabric of interconnection to the NetApp FAS2552 with TwinAx cables
    • MTU is set for extended frames (9000) on the interface of NetApp, vNIC for ISCSI vKernel vSwitch and group interface ports
    • During the initial setup of the vSwitches, I forgot the MTU setting Port and interfaces group wouldn't even ping, so all the MTU setting are good
    • ISCSI connection is green and LUN created and present storage warehouses are considered as available on the ESX Server to create a data store (sizes 1 TB and 2 TB tested times)
    • The NetApp storage have been created as a thin provisioned and thick provisioned - neither works and gets the same error

Any ideas would be very useful. Technical support has not yet responded.

    Thanks in advance.

    DM

OK, after working with NetApp and VMware on a conference call (after both made each other) bottom line "fix" was to remove the iSCSI port bindings, remove broken paths, remove the vSwitches and rebuild again.

    1. create vKernel vSwitch with appropriate port group

    2. set the MTU to 9000 on the port group and vSwitch

    3. create the bindings for each interface iSCSI Port

    4 re-scan

5 successfully create the data store

Oddly enough, I had to repeat this process 3 times for one of the blades, but it worked the first time for 3 other involved blades.

VMware technical support did provide the following as a look at the LUN of the CLI:

    1. / vmfs/devices/disks cd

    ls-l

We see and out of all the available discs

    Identify the Lun Naa.xxxxxxxx

    2. run the Naa.xxxxx reported in step 2

    partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.xxxxxxx

If there is a partition, you might see something similar to

    1 63 2249099 131 128 > 1 is the partition number

    or

You can see and error, if error please contact technical support

    3. If there is partition, you can delete

    partedUtil remove /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.xxxxxxx 1

NOTE: This process did not work, but is still useful nonetheless. It could work if the LUN has been used by another operating system and need cleaning. But my situation was all greenfield.
