Pass a VMDK to a data store to another is not free up space as expected

Hi, I'm ability on my local data store.  To remedy this, I created an iSCSI data store and used the vSphere client to move unused VMDK to it.  Unfortunately, the free space of the local data store won't upward.  I checked the guest VM that I removed the VMDK from and it shows the use of the appropriate space.  In addition, it has none of the snapshots for her.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Objective: move vmdk to store data with adequate storage and then increase storage D: 20G to 100G

    Converter is not available on this architecture. Can I migrate cold vm to the different data store, no prob.

    Question: Without use of the converter, method 3 can be used without a secondary vm? In other words, just by using target vm offline, online, offline? Or is it a problem of signing/OS disk on the Windows Virtual PC?

    I need to move vmdk in different LUN and extend drive vm windows on D: (non-OS drive). Is this possible via the single procedure? Options?

    To use method 3 to http://communities.vmware.com/thread/81121 requires available vm 'secondary', I did not.

    Method 3? Using of vmkfstools and another VM of Windows to extend a drive

    o Type? vmkfstools? X & lt; new size of drive & gt; vmfs/volumes / & lt; storage volume name & gt;. / & lt; virtual server name & gt;. / & lt; the virtual disk name & gt;? That is to say. /vmfs/volumes/Storage1/my_vm.VMDK new disk size can be specified in kilo, mega, or gigabytes and will be the total size of the new disk. So if you want to increase a virtual disk of 20 GB of 24GO you would put 24000 m or 24g

    o the second virtual machine to help stop

    o change the second virtual machine settings and add the first virtual machine hard drive

    o power on the second VM and load the disk management snap-in and verify that the first virtual machine disk has unallocated on it space

    o select Start, run and enter diskpart.exe

    o the command? the list of volume? This will show you all the volumes.

    o select your volume based on the results of the list volume command, IE. ? Select volume 1?

    o type the command? extend? to extend the volume

    o check again the disk management snap-in and the volume is expected to be expanded with a greater ability

    o stop the second VM and remove (do not remove) the record of it

    o turn your first VM and the new space should be there and ready to use.

    I prefer the plugin

    In addition, if the option to increase the size of the disk in the VIC is grayed out, it sounds like a permissions issue.  Finally, you can not extend the disc using the VIC, if the customer in question has a snapshot.

  • Best practices for moving to the 1 of 2 VMDK to different data store

    I have several virtual machines who commit a good amount of data on a daily basis.  These virtual machines have two VMDK; one where the operating system and that where data is committed to.  Virtual machines are currently configured to store in the same data store.  There is a growing need to increase the size of the VMDK where data are stored, and so I would like these put special in a separate data store.  What is the best practice to take an existing virtual computer and moving just a VMDK in another data store?

    If you want to split the vmdks (HDDs) on separate data warehouses, just use Storage vMotion and the "Advanced" option

  • Different VM 1 with 3 vmdk in the data store: Migration of data to rename store

    Hello

    I'm here today to ask for your help please.

    In our Organization, we have 1 large VM

    1 vmdk = > The BONES in lun, SAS performance

    1 vmdka = > 1 Tera SATA MON only of DATA

    Another 1 vmdka = > 1 Tera SATA MON only of DATA

    This virtual machine is being tested and we need to rename it to the name of the production.

    When you rename in vcenter you do a data store migration to correct all files with the new name.

    In this case, how can we specify each VMDK to go to the data store specified during migration?

    Because we could all think in the same data store due to the limitation of 2Tera by a data store

    Thanks for your help

    When you "migrate" a virtual machine and choose 'Change Datastore' use the advanced option. This will allow you to specify multiple destinations of data store. Use the drop-down arrow in the current [location].

  • VMDK even alert data store size

    Hello

    I'm setting up a VM SQL in a RAID 10 configuration. So I presented the disks to hosts and created a 1 TB data store (the full disk size)

    When I create the thick VM with the same size of the vCenter database start alerting on the data store space.

    What can I do to stop the alert in the data store, because it will be used only by SQL

    Thank you

    It allows to disable all actions call for this specific data store, so not the time vCenter.

    Make sure that you are in the correct view "Home-> inventory-> data warehouses and the cluster data store.

    If you are in the host and clusters, you can disable alarms on this specifc SQL VM.

  • How to use the command to move the machine to a data store in another data store in WTT(Windows Test Technology) Atlas (2.7)?

How can I separate them with regard to the cluster in which they are assigned to the place?

    This works perfectly.

    Now I am trying to apply the latest available official patch (ESXi600-201507001), but it seems to kill some important VIB

    VIBs installed: VMware_bootbank_esx - base_6.0.0 - 0.11.2809209, VMware_bootbank_lsu-lsi-lsi-mr3-plugin_1.0.0-2vmw.600.0.11.2809209, VMware_bootbank_lsu-lsi-megaraid-sas-plugin_1.0.0-2vmw.600.0.11.2809209, VMware_bootbank_misc - drivers_6.0.0 - 0.11.2809209, VMware_bootbank_sata - ahci_3.0 - 21vmw.600.0.11.2809209, VMware_bootbank_scsi - hpsa_6.0.0.44 - 4vmw.600.0.0.2494585, VMware_bootbank_scsi - mpt2sas_19.00.00.00 - 1vmw.600.0.0.2494585

    VIBs deleted: Hewlett-Packard_bootbank_scsi - hpsa_5.5.0.106-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820, LSI_bootbank_scsi - mpt2sas_15.10.06.00.1vmw - 1OEM.550.0.0.1198610, VMware_bootbank_esx - base_6.0.0 - 0.0.2494585, VMware_bootbank_lsu-lsi-lsi-mr3-plugin_1.0.0-1vmw.600.0.0.2494585, VMware_bootbank_lsu-lsi-megaraid-sas-plugin_1.0.0-1vmw.600.0.0.2494585, VMware_bootbank_misc - drivers_6.0.0 - 0.0.2494585, VMware_bootbank_sata - ahci_3.0 - 21vmw.600.0.0.2494585

    The next time I reboot the server, the data store is not available, no more and I have to do a restore. I suspect that the new bootbank_hpsa is the origin of the problem.

    So, how to install the latest patch without losing the data store connectivity?

    Thank you

    What should work, is to download the latest driver hpsa in the/hpq/latest/esxi-600-devicedrivers Indexand install it just after the connection of the host (prior to restart it). The .zip file contains a bundle off line as well as the .vib file.

  • Connect the ESX host and data store on another ESX host

    Hello

    assuming for this scenario:

    Host ESX 1: esx1

    Host ESX 2: esx2

    It is possible to mount esx2 datastore in esx1? (For example: via NFS). Of course, it is possible use a NAS/SAN intermediary, but I wonder if it is possible to achieve a direct mount.

    Thank you

    Eddie

    Well, to allow another host to share the local data store, the host must be able to act as an NFS server. The problem is, there is no service in one of the ESX version which able to serve that. So, as said what a.p., no, is not possible.

  • VMware ESXi 5.0 - "move to" data store a vmdk file has left at the original location

    Hi all

    I had to free up space on a SAN data store.  For this I used the function "move to...". "browser data store in VsphereClient.

    Did not notice directly but after I moved my E: drive vmdk file, he took no source data store.

    How can I make sure that vmdk (the source data store) may be deleted without impact on the vm?

    1. If 'vmkfstools d' report without lock, so I guess I could assume it is safe? Is there another way to check?

    2 vmkfstools seems not having the '-d' option in vSphere CLI? (East - this only accessible from ssh console on an ESXi? quid vCenter then?)

    In the data store, the files were:

    -Vm\win2k8_data.vmdk [SAN03] (data disk D :)

    -[SAN03] vm\win2k8_data - ctk.vmdk (-ctk looks that it has been created by Veeam)

    -[SAN03] vm\win2k8_transactlog.vmdk (E: transaction log 128 GB drive)

    -[SAN03] vm\win2k8_transact - ctk.vmdk (-ctk always assuming that it was created by Veeam ~ 8 MB)

    Steps to follow:

    -J' turned off the virtual machine using these car

    S ' installs 2 files on the E: drive

    -Removed the vm disk (<-my mistake? maybe this step left a lock file? in power vm off?)

    -Added the disk from the data store where I copied it

    Thanks for the help!

    behd

    Hi Behd,

    The best way to check if the vmdk on the source is not being used would be to add this vmdk to an existing virtual computer and turn on... ? If not used or is locked by one that turns on with success.

    If it has an instance running it wouldn't let you put under tension and raise an error of file locking. ?

  • Lack of space in the unable to consolidate data store, what can I do now?

    Hi all:

    Today, a single server VM was off because of the latest snapshot of veeam.

    I wen to vm machine to the Snapshot Manager and delete the snapshot.

    After you remove the server has been started and it seems that everything is OK except the message this need of consolidation server.

    I tried to regroup, but when I try to consolidate, it shows me this error

    An error occurred in consolidating the discs: msg.disklib.NOSPACE.

    After trial of vmware knowledge base I'm cloning virtual machine in another data store that is has a bit more space (temporary) so I test if it works this VM cloned as the original.

    I have a few questions. the original VM is up and runing correctly... but I don't know what to do next, please can you help me?

    1. I can move the original VM to another store of data with more than one space the machine consolidate? or it's very risky?

    2 I can always use the actual virtual machine without group until I have buy new data store and the passage to the new data store and consolidate? or maybe to clone the virtual machine to the new data store and remove them the old VM?

    3º if the cloned version works like the original VM machine, I guess I can pass version clone production and delete the virtual machine no consolidated this original data store?

    Kind regards

    There's nothing uncommon to 'Migrate' computer virtual data to another store. With Essentials it will unfortunately take time out well (without live migration of storage available).

    In any case, the cloning should also work. The clone will get however a new address UUID and MAC, (i.e. you may need to reconfigure the network), and the cloned VM will get a new ID of virtual machine, which can be important if you use a virtual machine based backup application. However, cloning does not touch the source, so if something does not work as expected you still have the source available.

  • Move-VM error: VM must be managed by the same VI servers as the destination data store

    I work with 2 ESXi servers and a single vCenter server with vSphere 6.0 Update 1 b; and PowerCLI 6.0 Release 2

    I have an a datacenter, cluster, vCenter and a vDS.  I need to pass the vCenter data store to another and get the error message:

    "Move-VM VM you are moving should be handled by the same server of VI as the destination container and the data store.

    Code looks like the following:

    $vctObj = to connect-viserver $vctIPaddress

    $esx1Obj = to connect-viserver $esx1IPaddress

    $esx2Obj = to connect-viserver $esx2IPaddress

  • Snapshots and data store management

    Hey, I'm pretty new so bear with me.

    I inherited middle of about 50 guests (ESXi 5.0) and 900 VMs. I am looking for input as to how you manage all snapshots and space they use. I am using NetBackup.

    I had a VM down due to one of the three warehouses of data that it is filling. I have two warehouses of 2 TB. Data warehouses are completely implemented in this virtual Windows machine. So, there are only a few GB free after commissioning. The obvious problem is when a snapshot is taken for backups, fills store data and the virtual machine is paused. I see that I can force ESXi 5 invited to use the working directory for the virtual computer, but what happens if I want to redirect shots elsewhere?

    How will you manage all this question if you do not see it?

    Welcome to the VMware forums communities.

    You can use the following steps to change the location of the snapshot for a VM - kb.vmware.com/kb/2007563.

    An alternative to the deployment of a data store that is pretty well filled by a single virtual machine is to use a raw device mapping (RDM).  With a RDM virtual machine is assigned all of the LUNS, rather than using a VMDK and the data store.  This avoid the situation where you have data stores that are pretty well filled right up.

    You can create a RDM in physical or virtual mode.  In your case a virtual RDM would be probably the best which provides instant support.   A physical RDM has more direct access to the LUN, but the snapshots are not supported.  A physical RDM can have up to 64 TB of size, and a virtual RDM is limited to 2 TB.

  • Detach a lun using the data store name?

    All (or Luc lol)

    I am wanting to use the disc to detach function, but instead of passing naa.id, I wish I could pass the name of a data store already disassembled data store to get the id of the naa. I would also like to pass a list of hosts, rather than to all guests who tied it.  I watched Alan functions but its going to each host rather than being able to move from a specific host.

    I took a slap at him earlier, but I'm a little confused on how to do it.

    http://www.lucd.info/2011/11/25/LUN-juggling-in-vSphere-5/

    Any help?

    With a small change to the functions of Alan, you can use a parameter of VMHost.

    In there, you specify one or more ESXi servers where the data store must be dismounted and detached.

  • Complete data store during data transfer

    Hi all

    I'm having a serious problem with the ability to store data, if I transferred a huge amount of data to a virtual machine through SSH. The data store has a total capacity of 511 GB. During the process of transfer of the virtual machine stops, just when the data store is full. So the only solution is to detach other virtual machines from the data store, but it is not enough.

    We are using VMware ESX 3.5 and virtual machine is Ubuntu Server. Here is the configuration of the virtual machine:

    Memory: 1024 MB

    Processors: 1

    HardDisk1: 6 GB

    HardDisk2: 52GB

    HardDisk3: 230GB

    HardDisk4: 256 GB

    Storage distribution and capacity for the VM:

    # df h
    Size of filesystem used Avail use % mounted on
    / dev/map/vg00-VG00_ROOT
    3.4 G 2.6 G 621M 81%.

    / dev/map/VG02-VG02_home_dpto
    479G 219 G 236 G 49% / home-Dept.

    HardDisk3 and HardDisk4 are mapped in a (VG02-VG02_home_dpto) LVM volume and its free space is 236 GB. Space free Dtx200: 4, 56 GB. I don't understand why. The problem may be caused by automatic generation VMDK:

    * ficheros00.platform.core.vmdk-> 6 GB

    * ficheros00.platform.core_1.vmdk-> 54 GB

    * ficheros00.platform.core_2.vmdk-> 241 GB

    * ficheros00. Platform.Core.-000002.vmdk-> 24 GB

    * ficheros00. Platform.Core_2 - 000001.vmdk-> 166 GB

    The first time, I got 20G of free space of the data store removing some residual VMs. Then I tried to copy a folder of 15 GB through the network by SSH from another server in files. It was the occupation during the first use: (just to compare)

    * ficheros00.platform.core.vmdk-> 6 GB

    * ficheros00.platform.core_1.vmdk-> 54 GB

    * ficheros00.platform.core_2.vmdk-> 241 GB

    * ficheros00. Platform.Core.-000002.vmdk-> 10 GB

    * ficheros00. Platform.Core_2 - 000001.vmdk-> 164 GB

    It seems 000002.vmdk and 00002.vmdk develop during the transfer of files, but they do not consolidate data. I don't know whether this is a normal behavior. I think that space used for ficheros00.platform.core-000002.vmdk-> 24 GB and ficheros00.platform.core_2 - 000001.vmdk-> 166 GB should be included in the ficheros00.platform.core_2.vmdk - > 241 GB and end of data transfer that they should disappear themselves.

    We calculate the initial free space before allocating hard disks of the virtual machine.

    In this data store, we currently have 2 VM:

    [root@hp585-01 eva4400:-02] # du-sh ficheros00.platform.core./
    472G ficheros00.platform.core

    [root@hp585-01 eva4400:-02] # du-sh lucus01.labo.core_1/
    36G lucus01.labo.core_1

    Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

    Best regards

    Harry.

    Log files, I see that capture files two instant belong to basic disks on the two different data stores on this host ESXi 3.5 Update 3. In any case with being thick implemented basic disks, you should be able to delete snapshots in the snapshot with off the virtual machine Manager. If the virtual machine is still on when you delete the snapshots, you need more disk space for another, temporary snapshot (snapshot to help consolidate)

    When you have removed before snapshots, you did this with the virtual machine power on or power off?

    Turn off the virtual machine will be to free up disk space (the .vswp file is deleted) and merge data from snapshot (with only a single snapshot per virtual disk) in basic disks should not require additional disk space.

    Because the Snapshot Manager doesn't show pictures anymore after the failure of the attempt, you will need to create a new snapshot (to activate the button 'Clear all') and hit use 'delete all '. Because of the size of snapshots, it may require some time to merge data in basic disks, so be patient, even if the GUI user expires!

    André

    PS: Please check that the second VM on the data store does not work on snapshots too, who could fill the data store so that you remove snapshots of the virtual machine in question!
