VMDK File Naming Conventions

Hello

I've attached a screenshot of one of the virtual machine. I need to understand these vmdk naming conventions. Snapshot of this virtual machine was created.

Thank you

Mihir

By default, the hard files have the name of the virtual machine. The first virtual disk is named hard, the second _1.vmdk of ...

For snapshots, a 6-digit number is appended to the name (e.g. - 000001.vmdk).

    Hello

My question is maybe stupid, but I'm not sure of the my control/log/dbf file naming convention. I am oracle 11g and asm is configured with active OMF. When I checked the file name, I get filename with certain numbers. What this number means.
    ASMCMD> ls

Could someone tell me please what these numbers represent? I tried google, but not got reasonable answers.

    http://docs.Oracle.com/CD/E11882_01/server.112/e18951/asmfiles.htm#i1023283

First number is the number of folder (not in the database, but in ASM), and as I noticed, the files of 'user' (from ASM instance view) begin 256. 'Progressive', as ASM fichier_parametres and OCR files are less than 256.
Second number is incarnation, which is derived from the date and time when the file is created.

These two ensure uniqueness of the names of files in ASM.

  • File naming conventions

    Hi all

    We use the AS2 protocol,

    1. for transactions to trading partner sending what will be the name of the file, they will see (outbound B2B transaction)
    2. Although our receivers transactions partner B2B (which will be the name of the file they need to send) commercial EX: while tranding partners sending 997 and 856, what file name they need to talk

    3. what should be the length of the name of the business partner, can give us the name of the trading partner over the 30 characters.

    Concerning
    CNU

    Hi ALAIN,

By default, the file name will be the revision of the Document Type. For example, if you send an 855 of version 4010 to your TP, then the name of the file would be 4010 and he'll go to AS2 header Content-Disposition as below.

    Content-Disposition: attachment; filename = 4010

What is the maximum length of the name of the Trading partner?

AFAIK there is no constraint on the length of the TP name, but if I'm right then this can be equal to the maximum length of 'Chain' of Java. Ask your manager this long name how much he wants to give to the TP name field. :)

  • Rename a vmdk file and move it

situation: a guest VM o/s is corrupt.  The virtual machine has a second VMDK file that contains the data.   Need to build a new virtual machine with the same naming convention.   Power off the VM origin with disk virtual corrupt system.  Removed from the inventory.   Then I recreated another virtual machine with a good guest o/s.   Now, I need set the data disk, but the label for this VMDK is exactly the same as the original system disk.   So the question is: can I rename the original data VMDK file and move it to the virtual machine created as a second virtual disk without problems?   Thank you.

Each virtual disk consists of two files, the file hard small header/descriptor and the file data (flat file or delta). For the rename command, you provide the name of file descriptor only.

  • Snapshot, Naming Convention

Is it possible to change the snapshots naming convention?

Work on a shared storage system uses NTFS on the back end so "/" is a character not consistent therefore generate snapshots fail.

Not as far as I know. You should certainly file a feature request for this because by default immediately uses the date/time stamp, which really should not use the /.

  • Naming Convention for LabVIEW

    Hello

What naming convention should be followed in LabVIEW? I will use typical CamelCase (MyNewProgram.vi) or underscore (My_New_Program.vi) or with spaces (my new Program.vi)? In most standard LabVIEW programs, I have observed that different is with spaces (my new Program.vi) but most of the text language programmers prefer without convention spaces. What is the best way to name VI or variable in LabVIEW and what is the reason for this?

I went through the guidelines and a different post, but they mention just not to use a special character. Nowhere I found the naming convention in LabVIEW.

    Kindly Guide.

    Thank you.

The case of camel hails from the days of DOS when you were allowed only 8 characters for a file name.  Windows allow spaces in file names.  Linux does not work.  Due to the limitation of Linux/Unix, you will often see text language programmers to use the underscore character.  Almost all my code is on Windows, so I use spaces in the names of my files simply because I find it easier to read than the underscore.

  • Check orphaned vmdk files are not used before deleting

    Hi all

I'm working on a site and after looking through the vSphere platform, it came to light that there are THOUSANDS (well more than 10,000) of orphaned VMDK files, it seems that there is a bug in the backup solution (you think).

In any case I was hoping someone could help me please do you know if there is a way to confirm that a vmdk is certainly not necessary, the tools I've used to identify the orphaned VMDK are the script here practically Jason: orphaned VMDK files and RV tools (health tab).

What I need to do now is to automate the removal of the VMDK if possible, but I need to run a test of consistency first to ensure that the files are actually orphans.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

    Hello

I can give you only a few rough concepts and advice because I do not know the details.

First, he yells for PowerCLI, below, you will get a few commands. If you are not familiar with PowerCLI/Powershell I highly recommend to get a grip on it.

Second, I'll assume that orphaned files = unused files. If this isn't the case, you can rename/move file instead of delete and wait as these phone calls / tickets

Thirdly, since we will work on files on data warehouses, we will use "vmstores" PSDrive. Get-PSdrive cmdlet will give you all the readers, that you, one of them is vmstores

To get your typical data warehouse 'cd ":

    CD vmstores:\your_vcenter\your_cluster

On each level, you can do 'ls' or 'cmd '. Tab completion works on everything in order to use it

From now on, all depends on what you already have and what it looks like. These files have a naming pattern names containing the name of the virtual machine or other information ("backup", "tmp" etc.)? You have these names stored somewhere? In text or csv file?

I guess you have the list of files in the text file. So much more simple method would be to be scan all data warehouses and all files. As you can imagine it is very time and resource consumption, so not recommended to all

    #we're importing filenames to variable
    $oldfiles = Get-Content your_text_file.txt
    cd vmstores:\your_vcenter\your_cluster
    $oldfiles | ForEach-Object {
#we're recursivly looking for file stored in $_ special variable (current object)
    $deleteme = Get-ChildItem $_ -Recurse
    #deleting the file
    Remove-Item $deleteme.PSPath
    }

If the file names that you already can somehow correspond directly to the VM, then we could use a more intelligent approach.

Let's say we have the testVM001 - bak003.vmdk and VMname file is testVM001. We can remove all characters after the 9th tank and then work on it:

    #we're importing filenames to variable
    $oldfiles = Get-Content your_text_file.txt

    $oldfiles | ForEach-Object {
        #getting VM name
        $vmname = $_.Remove(9)
        #getting VM path
        $vmpath = (Get-VM -Name $vmname |Get-Datastore).DatastoreBrowserPath
        #combining full path
        $fullpath = $vmpath + "\" + $vmname
        cd $fullpath
        #deleting the file
        Remove-Item ./$_
    }

These are simple ideas, it could be useful.

  • In DatastoreBrowser vmdk file size not the same as busybox?

    Hello

I have a few virtual machines in ESXi 4.0 U1, I installed the virtual disks as "thin" then they should grow in size, when the virtual machine is increasingly large.

If I look at the vmdk files in the DatastoreBrowser of vSphere Client 4 is the case and I have a few files 20 GB for my Windows Server 2008 vmdk files.

But if I look in the real file from busybox system (I use WinSCP or putty and even with Trilead VMX) then each vmdk-dish has the maximum size of 100 GB (exactly 107 GB). The vmdk file is named hard-plate here and not hard like in the DatastoreBrowser.

If I download the file DatastoreBrowser vmdk to a Windows machine that I get a vmdk-apartment with great size and not the size specified in DatastoreBrowser.

Surprisingly all-flat-files vmdk together (seen in WinSCP or VMX) are larger than the disk HARD Physics (500 GB).

    What is c?

    Thank you, franc

    Hello

as said marcelo, thin discs works on the VMFS partition level. The thin disks does not exist outside of a VMFS partition.

For example, is run you 'df - kh' you can see the real disk (distributed) of the VMFS partition space. In other words, you can see the total amount of disk space used by the thin disks of the virtual machines.

Anyway, you turn in the busybox "ls - sh" (instead of 'ls - lh') you will see the real space of the thin virtual disk for a particular virtual machine (vmdk).

But the problem is that tools such as winscp see the size of the disk space of the thin disks. This tools see the size of the reserved the vmdk file. Then, it copies all the file size of the disk as a thick disk. And of course, the target file system partition that will contain the thin disks, does not support thin disks.

A thin disk with 3 GB of actual data (distributed) and a 10 GB reserved size is copied on the net by Winscp as a 10 GB drive.

    Best wishes / Saludos.

  • Copy only the vmdk file to create a backup

I'm totally new to VMware ESX 4, but decided to allows you to host a web server on Windows 2008 Server vm, after about two weeks of reading and the VMware ESX product testing. I have used other products virtual machine last year or so for other projects.

Why not just copy the vmdk files to create backup vms? That is problem? I have not to perform the clone at the same time as any other vm used to create or created from the vmdk file copied. I tested with a NT4 Workstation vm, because the files are small and can be copied and moved quickly, and I didn't have problems.

I use the Vsphere Client to copy the vmdk file to a folder at the root of the data store and then by creating a virtual machine, naming the vm the same as the folder.  I created a model of the virtual machine to w2008 use Vsphere standalone converter, but the vmdk copy is so much easier and faster that of re-run the converter again on the model should I need.

I created a Windows Server 2008 virtual machine and want to test before installing Tomcat and MySQL. The operating system should get messed up, I thought that I could start over with just using the current vmdk file, I copied. Yet I don't trust using snapshots, etc. I have also created many Linux VM on the ESX Server for analysis of the use of Tomcat on them. I also have a XP Pro VM as an alternative to emergency. It is XP Pro on a computer that hosts the web site of Tomcat/MySQL production - slowly.

    Thank you

    Homerun

Take a look at http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 for a script that can automate Virtual Machine cloning. When you start a virtual machine that has been cloned ESXi will prompt you to "I copied it" or I moved it"etc. If it is a copy, you would respond with "I copied it" and ESXi change MAC, etc. of the UUID. The only required files are files VMDK and VMX file. Others will be re-created when the machine is added to the inventory.

In regards to the tools, I would install them. It also includes drivers to allow the host ESXi communicate with VM for things like the soft stop etc.

  • Snapshots moves my vmdk files

    Hello

I created VM with a system disk and a disk temp on separate data NFS storage to avoid having to temporary (i.e. snapshot of storage) backup data. However, when I create a snapshot of the virtual machine, the delta file is created with the system disk, the path to the disk in vCenter (change the settings on the virtual computer) changes its data store and he stayed even when I remove the snapshot and merge the vmdk files. Is this really EXPECTED behavior?

It is on VC 2.5 U3 and U4 of ESX 3.5.

    Thanks in advance,

    Daniel

Hi, can you guarantee that the VMDK files are named differently in data warehouses. By default, VC will give eponymous to a second VMDK if it's on a different data store. This causes problems with some instant operations. Make sure that VMDK have different file names.
