VMFS file system recommendation

Hello

I have a client who is currently on Vmware 3.5

Finally, we will be moving them to Vmware 4.1 and adding a second San.

He current SAN is formatted with 3.31 VMFS

When we get the second San we will be formatted with 3.46 VMFS (I think it's the most recent 4.1)

We will keep the old SAN in Production and to divide some of our virtual machines between the 2 San.

Finally, ESXi all servers will be version 4.1 and ide like to get all the VMS on Hardware Version 7.

So I have a few Question regarding the San file system

1. can you hardware version THAT VM 7 running on the older format Lun VMFS 3.31?

2. assuming that the virtual machine can run on the old format, is there an advantage to taking the time to temporally move the machine virtual offshore of the old storage and put in the form of the old LUN with the last file system VMFS, such as performance?

Thank you

Mike

Hello.

1. can you hardware version THAT VM 7 running on the older format Lun VMFS 3.31?

Yes, there is no problem of interoperability here.

2. assuming that the virtual machine can run on the old format, is there an advantage to taking the time to temporally move the machine virtual offshore of the old storage and put in the form of the old LUN with the last file system VMFS, such as performance?

No - read more at http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2011/02/25/re-vmfs-3-versions-%E2%80%93-maybe-you-should-upgrade-your-vmfs/

Good luck!

But if the data store is a freshly created VMFS-5 then ATS is only intended to be used with aware systems table VAAI any height claim is.

  • Impossible to mount the drive external HARD under Ubuntu Linux - file system damaged and MFT

I get the following error when I try to mount my external hard drive on my Ubuntu.

    UNABLE TO MOUNT
    Error mounting/dev/sdc1/media/khalibloo/Khalibloo2: command-line ' mount t 'ntfs' o ' uhelper = udisks2, nodev, nosuid, uid is 1000, gid = 1000, ask dm = 0077, fmask = 0177 "" / dev/sdc1 "" / media/khalibloo/Khalibloo2 "' came out with the exit status no lame 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: input/output error".

    Failed to mount ' / dev/sdc1 ': input/output error

NTFS is incompatible, or there is a hardware failure, or it's a SoftRAID(4)/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows, and then restart Windows twice. Using the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID(4)/FakeRAID then frst activate and mount a different device under the/dev/map/directory, (for example/dev/map/nvidia_eahaabcc1). See the documentation for 'dmraid' for more details.

It is not mount on windows either: "i/o device error".

This is a disk with a single partition hard ntfs

Of course, I tried chkdsk /f. reported several file segments as unreadable, he didn't say if he fixed them or not (apparently not). also tried with the indicator/b.

    ntfsfix reported as corrupted volume.

TestDisk was able to correct a small error with the partition table by adding the '80' for the active partition indicator (only). TestDisk also confirmed that the boot sector was very good and it corresponded to the backup. However, when you try to repair the MFT, he could not read the MFT. He could not also the list of files on the hard drive. It says file system may be damaged.

Active @ also shows that the MFT is missing or damaged.

I tried to replace the USB cable. Has not changed anything. I tried to update the driver. Windows reported that he was already up to date. Yes, the pilot has been activated.

So, how can I fix the file system? or MFT? or the I/o device error?
I used the HARD drive for months. This problem started 2 days ago. I also tried to mount it on other computers, without success.

    Hello

I'm sorry to read about problems with your drive.
Unfortunately, I think that the question is misplaced a bit as your case appears to be the health of your rather external HARD drive that a specific problem related to Linux.

To add clips, if the tools you use have failed to fix your drive, then I do not think that a user 'normal' forum will no longer.
I know it's a fine recommendation and probably just add salt in your wounds: If you really care for files, do a sector backup before doing any file system / partition own modifications.
The reason is very simple - if the tool you use has made a mistake when judging what actions are the right ones, and submit these changes, you move your goal - and fast!
Instead of repairing, the tool can simply corrupt data even further.
Any subsequent change aggravates the disorder exponentially.

Judging by the details in your message, I'm sorry to say that I think your drive is defective, or at least the data is lost.
Of course some companies will probably be able to restore it, but that normally costs a fortune.

Unless you are willing to spend astronomical amounts of money on data rescue, so I suggest to accept data loss and look at what you can do with the HARD drive.
Try to format. No problem, this indicates the drive is defective and must be replaced.

    Sorry for so little help.

  • chkdisk-type of file system is NTFS, the volume is dirty, what it means

When I turn on my computer, I see the following: file system to check on C: the type of the file system is NTFS, the volume is dirty.  What does that mean?

A volume can be marked as dirty, if the system underwent a power interruption (power failure, pulling plug, removing the battery, button / stop), abandoned restart or an abnormal termination.  One of these events?

When XP starts, it automatically checks the bit of impurity on each volume.  You can also tell XP to ignore the bit of impurity on any volume, but this probably isn't a good idea in case there is a real problem that needs to be fixed.  If you have a hard drive where the dirty bit will not be deleted, you could tell XP to check everything just do not.

If the starting XP detects the volume is dirty, it will automatically run the disk with error correction (chkdsk/p) check and try to fix the problems detected.

You can check the status of your bit of impurity from a command prompt window.

To do this, click Start, run and enter in the box:

    cmd

Click OK to open a command prompt window.

For example, to query the bit of impurity on drive C, type:

    fsutil dirty query C:

    The sample output:
    Volume c is dirty
    Volume C: is dirty

You cannot use fsutil or chkntfs from a command prompt to delete the bit of impurity on a volume.

This does not mean that a disk check is scheduled to run, and you can't cancel what needs to happen in this case because this isn't the problem.

You also won't solve this problem by editing your registry database - not where is the problem.

Once a volume is marked as dirty, the only way to clear the dirty bit is to run "chkdsk/r" or "chkdsk/p" when the volume is not in use.  The only way a volume can not be used while XP is just starting to load or from the XP Recovery Console.

If XP will not run chkdsk correctly when your system restarts or the dirty bit will not erase as it should, you need to look in the Event Viewer log chkdsk and see what is happening and fix it.

If XP will not always clear the dirty bit, you need to run chkdsk/r of the XP Recovery Console so you can look and see what works and run it again until it works.  If your hard drive fails, you may never be able to clear the dirty bit, in this case, you can also say XP never check the afflicted volume dirty bit.

Saying XP not to check the bit of impurity on a volume would be risky behavior because there would always be some kind of problem with your hard drive.

When chkdsk runs automatically restart either because XP thinks he needs to (perhaps your NTFS volume has been marked as dirty) or you have chosen to do the chkdsk command yourself, the results appear in the viewing Application event log.  You should look there for the chkdsk log to see what happened and no problems after running chkdsk.

To view the logs in Event Viewer, click Start, settings, Control Panel, administrative tools, event viewer.

A shortcut to the event viewer is to click on start, run and enter in the box:

    %SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc

Click OK to launch the event viewer.

He is so little known about your configuration - because the forums MS Answers do not ask for information, when a new question is asked.

If you run some kind of RAID configuration, you might do better if you describe your RAID configuration and after the actual event that you see in the event log (is it event ID 55?).  Then maybe you will get some ideas of the Microsoft Support engineer who might actually work.

You see just this event in the paper at random times or is it when you try to run a specific operation and if yes, what operation triggers the event?  Here is an article of MS to help get you started, but if you use Google to search for the error message, you can find more ideas:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/246026

If sfc/scannow solves your problems, I'll send you (or your charitable organization preferred) US $100.

Here's how to publish events to the event to display the log files:

If you double-click on an event, it will open a window of properties with more information.  On the right are black up and down arrow keys to scroll through the open events. The third button that looks like two overlapping pages is used to copy the details of the event in your Windows Clipboard.

When you find an interesting event that occurred at the time of your question, click on the third button at the top and arrows to copy the details and then you can paste the details (right click, paste or CTRL-V) the text in detail here for analysis.  Remove all personal information from your information after you paste If you are forced to do so.

If you paste an event, it will look something like this annoying system startup event:

    Event type: Information
    Event source: Service Control Manager
    Event category: no

To get a fresh start on any log of the event viewer, you can choose to clear the log (the log backup is available), and then reproduce your problem, then just look at the events around your show and troubleshoot events that are happening when you have your question.

You can search for events on the World Wide Web and get ideas.  It's where people events they see and then to the top of their questions, ideas and solutions:

  • 32 file system of Windows xp continues to go corrupt.

My computer restarts just in itself, but when it restarts it get a message saying it cannot start because the System 32 has been corrupted.

But if I try to type anything, it let me just type a letter and it must be uppercase.

This problem continues to be that I used a Department of defence hard drive clean and reinstalled windows xp and within three days its doing this yet.
I used the same system disk on my other computer with no problems. I took a picture of what the message on the screen in the link to photobucket

    http://i1208.Photobucket.com/albums/cc372/Q5Q/screenshots/80cc4c33.PNG

I would like to know what can be the cause of this and how to stop it.

    Thank you

    When you see the message:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or damaged:
    \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

This means that the hard disk file system is corrupted and XP cannot find the files needed to load up - he's trying to start, but it cannot find the files needed.

What DOES mean, is that you need to implement Microsoft KB article KB307545, which is what most of the people tend to want to start when they see the problem.

They think that's because it's the first thing coming in a Google or Bing search, but is not the problem.  If they take some time to reproduce the problem, understand it and fix a few hundred times (or more), they would never recommend this article once again (for this symptom).

Here is a link to a thread where you can see how it is easy to solve the problem.

In this thread, you can see where the engineer of Microsoft Support (probably limited to only understanding Bing and Microsoft KB articles) goes in the WRONG direction...

    http://answers.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/Forum/windows_xp-system/after-Windows-restart-and-then-no-configsystem/83d5c57f-9836-4f3a-bec8-04c7d81861d3

After following my instructions, the user reports:

now after following your recommendation to use followed by chkdsk /r recovery console command, my system started successfully at first start upward without any error... config/system registry.

Generally, this problem comes after a power failure, power failure, pressing the power button, restart aborted, abnormal or the battery load - stop while XP is running.  None of this seems familiar?

Third-party programs can sometimes corruption - as some earlier versions of Norton/Symantec products.  Maybe your program DOD also the origin of the problem.

It could also be that your DOD cleaner is really delete files for some reason any or do anything else to cause the problem.  If it's true that the files are really missing after cleaning, this DOD program has a problem.

Can you not use the program for a few days and see if your system "lasts" longer without it?  That's what I suspect.

It seems that since your screen shot that you are about to enter the XP Recovery Console and it's where you have to fix your immediate without boot problem (a good thing).

Here part of my itinerary and paste on what to do for your situation and how to use the XP Recovery Console to repair.  You are almost there - just need to know how to react to the Recovery Console...

When you start on the CD, follow the instructions:

Press any key to boot from CD...

    Installing Windows... going to pronounce.

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

Select the installation that you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

You may be asked to enter the password (usually empty).

You should be in the folder C:\WINDOWS.  It's the same as the

C:\Windows folder that you see in Solution Explorer.

The Recovery Console allows base as file commands: copy, rename, replace, delete, chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, cd, etc.

For a list of the commands in the Recovery Console, type help at the prompt of commands or read on here XP Recovery Console:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/proddocs/en-us/recovery_console_cmds.mspx?mfr=true

A good idea before you start things must first verify the integrity of your file system by using the chkdsk command.

In the command prompt window, run the chkdsk command on the drive where Windows is installed to try to fix any problems on the afflicted player.

Running chkdsk is fine, even if he finds no problem.  It won't hurt anything to run it.

Assuming your boot drive is C, run the following command:

    CHKDSK C: /r

Let chkdsk finish to correct the problems, he could find.

It may take a long time for chkdsk complete or they seem to be "stuck".  Be patient.  If the HARD drive led blinks always, chkdsk is something.  Keep an eye on the amount of the percentage to be sure that it is still making progress.  It may even seem to go back sometime.

You must run chkdsk/r again until it finds no error to correct.

Remove the CD, and then type "exit" to exit the RC and restart the computer.

You have not to set the BIOS to boot the disk HARD since the CD won't be

  • Use restore disk errors impossible C and error checking failed to open NTFS file system. Pleas help

I try to use System. restore and it says drive C contains errors, you should check the drive for errors before you can restore it. When I run an error check it say this type of file system is NTFS: cannot open the volume for direct access. Thanks for any help.

    Hello GregID,

My recommendation based on your response is to do the following:

    1. Click Start and type 'CMD' in the search bar.
    2. Right-click on the cmd finds it and choose "Run as Administrator"
    3. Type ' CHKDSK/f' and press on it, if it says restart.

This should allow the system to run CHKDSK in the window that is already open.

    Best regards

  • This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification.

I've seen other posts on this topic. Nothing seems to work, so I thought I would explain my situation.

The machine is new. Win7 64 bit company. The problem I see is that I try to load some versions of Visual Studio on the new machine. However, none of the discs auto-run using my local internal DVD drive. They all have a Readme file with the message "this disc contains a"UDF"file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346"UDF"file system specification."

I know that the discs are good, I used the on my old machine, and I can always use them on other machines I tested.

The real kicker here is that I can plug an external USB DVD drive... and then the local drive starts to read the installation discs! It's like making this action allows something else in the machine.

Also, I even restarted the machine mode of diagnosis (without external DVD drive attached)... and restart, the drive would read the installation discs. BUT when I do a full stop and then turn on the machine upward, the local drive gives me the same readme file. Again, it is as if something gets activated, and then reset to a complete stop.

I am at a loss of what to check then. Real head-scratcher, because I know the drive works and the machine can recognize the drive and even read installation discs.

I do not have the applications installed on the machine of DVD burning, so I don't think there is a conflict.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for posting the request in the Microsoft community forums!

If your encryption key is lost or damaged and you don't have a way to recover your data, the data is lost. Also, you will lose data if you store your encryption key on a smart card and the smart card is damaged or lost. To make sure you can always access your encrypted data, you should back up your encryption certificate and key.

  • Is it possible to control the local file system access?

Is it possible to control installed programs access to the local file system content in the same way windows internet access firewall controls?

That is, allow a program installed in "C:\Program Files\Test\" with the name test.exe access directory folder for writing and for reading Documents. Everything else is denied by default, in the case where he wants to read 'Desktop\Private lettre.txt' user will ask if I want to allow this.
I found several programs with this feature, but they are outdated and do not support win7 64 bit :(

    Hello

Thanks for posting your query in the Microsoft Community Forum.

Based on the information, it seems that you try to use a program to block programs installed to access the directory folder for writing and My Documents only for the reading of the code.

It would be useful that you can answer these questions to help you further.

    1. you try to write an access program directory folder for writing and My Documents only for playback?

    2. How are you trying to code this program?

If you try to write a program, the question you posted would be better suited in the MSDN Forums. I would recommend posting your query in the MSDN Forums for further assistance:
