VMotion and file on an ESX Server host

Hello

We have recently implemented 3 ESX 3.5 servers and configured HA and Drs However, I wonder for VMotion to work correctly, each ESX Server dns name and IP address must be in each box of ESX host file? My last company consultant put all the names of the ESX servers with IP addresses in the file for each host, but this time, the consultant does not. I was wondering if it is advisable or not?

Thank you.

KeV

Hello

You needn't name resolution for Vmotion. This is based on the Vmotion network, that use only Ip and default gateway addresses.

On the hand of oter HA need DNS to work. Then you should be able to resolve host names in the bu cluster HA FQDN.

Have a look here for best practices on HA-> http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2008/10/27/ha-best-practices/

  • Upgrade virtual Center 2.02 VC 2.5 on the new server. Upgrade ESX 3.02 ESX Server 3.5. and add the new ESX Server.

    Hello

We are due to upgrade our VMWare environment. ESX 3.02 x servers virtual Center 2.02 and 3.  We have new material on which to install Virtual Center and we are also adding a new ESX Server.

I read various guides for virtual center upgrade and watched questions on the forum, but can not see everything that relates to the way I thought to do. I want to install Virtual Center 2.5 on the new server and I would refer her to the current virtual cenre database.  Is this supported?

I then install ESX 3.5 on my new ESX Server and add it to the virtual Center. Then I would start the upgrade / rebuild other servers using VMotion to migrate all VM the next server to be rebuilt on the new server running ESX 3.5.

    Would this work.

What is the best way to upgrade the virtual center of new material and a new Version?

Thank you for all the advice that can be offered.

    Kind regards.

Yes, it is an upgrade that is supported.  Don't forget there will be an upgrade for your DB schema and it may take some time.  Just make sure that you have a good backup of your DB before you start.

I then install ESX 3.5 on my new ESX Server and add it to the virtual Center. Then I would start the upgrade / rebuild other servers using VMotion to migrate all VM the next server to be rebuilt on the new server running ESX 3.5.

I agree entirely, I drive rebuild is the way to go.

Upgrade to the current version using the .iso image file.  Don't forget the license server, which is a standalone update and are located in the folder /vpx of the vCenter .iso

    Upgrade path:

    1 vCenter

    2 ESX

  • How to list, view, and edit the directories and files of ESXi 4.1 host?

We are in transition to ESXi 4.1and I examination of the chnages will make managing hosts. We will use ot vMA and I have working for most things, but there are a few tasks I would like to be able to do that I can't understand.

How to check a file system of the host. I would like to be able to browse, discover, and/or modify some files ESXi host. (for example/var/log) do not know what are the options I have for this with ESXi 4.1. Which of them, you can browse the file host system? Are there other ways?

    • vMA (can not know how to do this with vMA)
    • Browser such as https://ESXi host/file and https://ESXi Host/host (these only show data warehouses and select the conf/log files. are there other links to directories of home?)
    • Tech Support Mode (this seems to work, but I can not list directories/files. Seems that I need to know exactly where and what I'm looking for)
    • vSphere CLI remote

vmksummary went with ESXi and vmkwarning/vmkernel are wrapped in messages.  You can get to spend / HA / agent logs via https vCenter / sharp (or other API methods.  We can create cron tasks, but that goes into the field of the non supported. You can set up syslog to push the message log file to a syslog or receiver to a location in the data store.

  • Copy the files/etc/passwd and/etc/Group from your ESX Server to the machine that you want to use as map server

I'm trying to set up an NFS share on my windows server so that I can do vMotion.  I have 2 ESX servers that will access the storage location so that I can vMotion the content on an ESX Server to the other ESX Server.  I came across many discussion forums who say I need to "copy the files/etc/passwd and/etc/Group for your ESX Server to the machine that you want to use as map server"... How can I copy these files onto my ESX Server?

I am VERY VERY new to VMware and will need step by step instructions on how to do it.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

    Try this http://vmetc.com/2008/02/19/create-a-nfs-share-for-vm-iso-files-with-windows-2003-server-r2/ and this

    http://ITKnowledgeExchange.TechTarget.com/it-consultant/Configuring-NFS-in-Windows/

To copy the files everywhere I would use WINSCP which based a gui app secure copy, which should make it easy to copy the file into the Windows box

  • VMDK file unreadable after migration of VM & update of the ESX Server

Last night we have updated the ESX servers here and in the migration process machines from one node to the other (by placing a single node of the cluster in maintenance mode). During this migration, the VMs one has stopped running. When we finished the migration and had updated the ESX Server, we brought the system to the top and tried to start this virtual machine.

First, we looked in the directory of the virtual machine and saw that the VMDK file has a different name, with - dish at the end (before hard). We have renamed the file, removing the - flat extension, and this is where we saw these messages. ESX Server always gbehaved as if the file did not exist or was unreadable. The VMDK file is indeed the most, but VMware seems unable to open it. For what it's worth, it was also noted a .hlog file in the directory of the virtual machine on the server:

Anyone can shed some light on this? Done-flat suffix in the VMDK file have a special meaning? Any recommendations for the rescue of this virtual machine?

Thank you very much in advance.

    Kind regards

-Flat.vmdk file is your data file where all of your actual data has been stored. Name back to the original value.

It seems that you have lost the descriptor file (vmname.vmdk). If you have not an extraction backup the following procedures to re-create this file

  • Add new ESX Server Cluster

Just a quick question, I installed ESX 3.5 on a new server X 4200 and you want to add the new node to the cluster in our production environment.

Is it just a case of click with the right button on the cluster Server VIrtual Center and selecting "add host" and then passing by the guests of the wizard? I've never done this before, but it seems that it is very simple.

Am I missing something and I need to know?

    Thank you

If you have your new esx Server in the inventory just drag and drop it to your cluster. If you do not add the esx server to your inventory list you can right click on the cluster and just add the esx server there.

If you want to set this for VCA ESX Server you must disable all the virtual machine on the ESX Server. otherwise, you can add the ESX with virtual machines for your cluster.

    Thank you

  • USB key contains VMX and VMDK files, I import them to an ESX Server 3.5

I use VMware Workstation to use these virtual machines, but now I would add these virtual machines from one ESX Server. Each virtual machine is in its own directory on the USB drive and each folder contains files etc, vmxf, vmx, vmdk. What is the best way to get these on a server ESX from external USB drive?

Or install the stand alone vConverter. It's free and it's the part of the VC you would use anyway. So I just install the vConverter and import your virtual machines to do. After they are imported, you'll need to register virtual machines.

  • How to control vmotion license to the ESX Server

I have 5 servers ESX 3.5 U3 in my vCenter.  Two are using host license and three are in a cluster and using the server license assigned by my license server, that runs on vCenter.  However, my ESX servers two stand alone using the host license receive a license of vmotion by my license server and my ESX servers in my cluster but cannot get a license of vmotion because their attributed to the wrong ESX Server.

How can I get the vmotion license released by the ESX servers who don't need and make it available on my ESX Server who need?  My three ESX servers in cluster shared storage for vmotion and don't have my two stand alone ESX servers.

I tried simple things, like the disconnection of servers and ESX servers in reconnection vCenter, re-reading of license files, restart the license server, etc..  license and vCenter server is 2.5 U4.

    Thanks in advance.  Jim

go to the configuration tab and click Networking, you have a Port VMkernel configuration?  If so, edit click the vSwitch properties, change your VMkernel port settings and uncheck the box that says VMotion: enabled.

  • Move VMS between server ESXi and vSphere ESX server

    Dear all,

I want to move some a vSphere ESX server virtual machines to ESXi server.

I understand that some users will use CPS to move between the ESX servers, but apparently not for moving between different products.

I'm just using a slow and prone to error method:

The files of the virtual machine to my deskop PC of vSphere ESX server and then upload to the ESXi server.

I would advise you to please all of the methods that is better than this one?

    Help, please.

    Kind regards

    Tommy

If you got a central storage you can move virtual machines between the two products with vMotion. Since you don't seem to have available vMotion, you pouvez use scp. SCP has nothing to do with ESX/ESXi products. It is a Linux/Unix program which is available in both servers.

So with the CPS, you need a little less.

    The syntax is like:

    SCP - r/path/to/vm/directory user@esxi:/path/to/new/location

  • NATing between an ESX server and the Virtual Center Server.

We strive to set up a server to VirtualCenter 2.5 inside a firewall and put servers ESX 3.5 within each of our customer networks. The problem is that within each client network, the IP address must be coordinated. Support of ESX 3.5 originating server, and if so, how do I set up? If not, how VMware plans to support this?

Supported for VirtualCenter 2.0 only NAT

This version supports for the connection from ESX Server 2.5 and VirtualCenter 3.0 hosts using NAT (NAT). To configure ESX Server to connect to a VirtualCenter server is configured behind a NAT, you must add the following in vpxd.cfg configuration setting:

    < vpxd >

    ...

    < managedip >ipAddress< / managedip >

    ...

    < / vpxd >

When the IP address is the address of the host ESX Server uses to communicate with the VirtualCenter server.

See KB 2195771 "Manually setting Cluster IP address for Clustered VirtualCenter Server" for more information on the manual configuration of the IP address in the file vpxd.cfg.

Also note that the NAT must be configured to allow packets UDP Port 902 of this IP address.
