VMotion between single core and dual core

I have 2 Dell PE 6850's and according to the table of vmotion for cpu dell, they are compatible. But now the question is is there a problem if one of the servers has 4 core processors and the other has 4 duel procs and HA works correctly?

If the processors are compatible vmotion, then you will be fine.  ESX is NUMA aware, so that he knows the difference between a core and a CPU socket and the implications of the memory of the two.

  • vMotion between 4.1 and 5.5

Our production now runs on a cluster of 4.1 and our old SAN NAS fiber with VMFS3.  We have 3 new servers, not used now in a cluster of 5,5 with a new empty SAN NAS fiber with VMFS5.  Even though these two groups have vMotion networks on the same subnet, I do think fast vMotioning without a live VM from the old to the new cluster is possible, mainly because 4.1 must be fixed on both.  Even with a disabled virtual machine I don't think vCenter & vMotion is any help and backup & restore, it is called for.  Am I right on this?

I think we should do is: forget the new cluster, join the new 5.5 servers in the old cluster, use vMotion to migrate all virtual machines to the 5.5 servers but always located on the old SAN, cut loose the old 4.1 servers, add the new data store empty VMFS5 and storage vMotion, virtual machine for the new San (everything is done with running virtual machines).  Not quite sure if 4.1 servers and 5.5 will work in the same cluster, but I think they can.  Former processors are AMD Opteron, and new Intel Xeon processors.  How is this sound?

    Thanks for the tips... Lyle

In this case, you can do the following:

1 create a new cluster on the same vCenter server that contains 5.5 hosts

    2. ensure that the new host can see the old SAN (you can also connect a host that can act as an intermediate host)

    3. cold migrate virtual machine 4.1-5.1 host

    4. power on the VM and check

    5. use storage vMotion to migrate from the old san again san

  • vMotion between PE2950 lll and R710?

I have a Dell PE2950 with intel e5430 2.60 Ghz model 23-6 lll step by step and was hoping to add a R710 with 5660 x 2.8 Ghz for the mixture but I'm concerned I won't be able to vMotion because of the processor

The PE2950 is running esx 4 but am planning on upgrade to ESXi

    Am I right to worry?

Are there ways to work even when vMotion?

You should put the two host in a cluster and select CVS with level "Core 2 45nm"

Is it possible to vmotion between a double x 5570 and double a 5670 x server?

    Hello.

Yes, you need to activate the VCA mode as described in KB 1003212 for the 5570 and 5670 to work together.  Regardless of the number of cores.

  • AMD Athlon X 2 64 5800 + and AMD Phenom 940 quad not Core than a single core shows on Vista

I am running MS Windows Vista Edition home premium on a motherboard ASUS M3A78-CM very w / AMD Phenom II x 4 940 3.0 Ghz 6 MB Quad Core, 2 GB of RAM.  It is an upgrade to an AMD Athlon 64 X 2 5800 + 3.0 Ghz.  The two see the single core cpu in the Task Manager, cpuz, msconfig, etc..  However, the BIOS displays 1 physical cpu w / 4 logical processors.  In addition, the reason for which I have not even noticed the problem, is that I play a resource intensive game called Crysis Wars and my fps SUCK.  This led me to the problem.  Wars started, the console displays only a single core as well during the detection of the spu.  I need to know if the game software is read directly from the hardware OR of Vista.

I have tried everything to fix the problem, including the use of msconfig to clear the number of processors, select detect HAL, reboot, etc.  Did not work.  I suspect that this is a license live upward, from Microsoft, but will not know until I have install another OS to test.  My next move (when I can afford it) is to install XP or Linux to see if these operating systems can detect all four cores.  If it works then I know it's the fault of Vista.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated as my frustration level is through the roof with it.  Thank you.

Try updating the BIOS with the latest version: 2801 BIOS M3A78-CM.  This can easily be performed using ASUS Update V7.16.01 for Windows XP / XP 64-bit/Vista/Vista 64-bit. Carey Frisch

  • Difference between vCPU & Core

    Hello

I have a query in which I would like to know the conversion of physical to virtual server in the case of CPU

-Difference between 2 vCPU and 1 vCPU & 1 kernel, 2 carrots, in terms of performance etc...

-Also in the case of physical server with 2 physical processors and 8 virtual processors [4 virtual by UC] physical what will be the value creating virtual machines

    Please suggest

-Difference between 2 vCPU & 1 core & 1 vCPU 2 carrots, in terms of performance etc...

Basically, it's a guest operating system compatibility and/or licensing examination that you are configuring. In both cases the virtual machine will be scheduled on two physical cores.

-Also in the case of physical server with 2 processors and physical 8 virtual physical CPU [4 virtual by UC] what will be the value creating

As much as necessary, but start down. Often physical hardware is oversized (it's actually one of the reasons for virtualization). If you discover that the VM does not expected and it is caused by the CPU, then you can always add additional vCPUs/core later. With the addition of too many vCPUs you likely to affect the physical set system and all the VMS on it.

New features in each generation of processor. However in order to migrate live virtual computer, the CPU characteristics presented to the virtual machine must be equal on the source and target host does not cause problems (such as BSOD). The different EVC baselines hide or reveal certain CPU features to the virtual machines that are common for all processors in the cluster. Table 1.1 in the article you mentioned some of these CPU features.

  • vMotion between versions and licenses

I have a question about vMotion in vSphere 4.1.  It is primarily on licenses, as I know technically what I'm asking, it's doable.

With the inclusion of vMotion in Standard licenses, can run a mixed environment (eg. Enterprise and Standard licenses) and vMotion between hosts with different licenses?

For simplicity, assume that the environment is running 4.1.  Although if you know, could you please indicate if it would work between versions (eg. between 3.5 and 4.1 or 4.0 and 4.1).

    Thank you.

The answer you are looking for is + 5.23.2

Yes.  As long as you have licenses vMotion on all host ESX (i), and you meet the requirements of vMotion (shared storage, CPU compatibility, network, etc.) whereas there should be no problem.  Remember that if a mixed environment of VI3 and vSphere4 hosting, do not upgrade the comment tools.

  • What is the diffrence between HA, FT and Vmotion?

    Hi guys,.

What is the diffrence between HA, FT and Vmotion? It would be ideal to use in which situations?

    Concerning

    Sylvie

Take a look on VMware site to have more holding on these technologies...

VMotion prevent planned service outages and can be used for live migrate a virtual computer through ESX hosts.

It requires a license (included from the advanced version), vCenter, a network for VMotion, shared storage, and a "compatibility" between CPU.

VMware HA resolve host unplanned (and VM) downtime and can be used to restart a virtual computer on other ESX hosts in there is a failure of the host or restart a virtual computer if it freezes.

Downtime is usuall about 2-5 minutes (the time needed to start a virtual machine)

It requires a license (included from essential Plus edition), vCenter (only to set up HA), shared storage.

VMware FT avoid unplanned downtime host and can be used to create a standby virtual machine that will take the place of the primary, if there is a failure of the host.

There may be several primary-secondary couple according to the power of your network and host.

Downtime is usuall less than 1 sec

It requires a license (included from the advanced version), vCenter, a network dedicated to FT, shared storage, a feature of the device CPU and a "compatibility" between CPU.
