vMotion no EVC EVC cluster

Looking at the migration of our virtual servers that are currently on HP 25 p G1 (ESX 3.5 U5) processors of blades AMD 275 on too Hp BL460c G1 (ESX 4.0 U2) blades with processor E5320.

The cluster BL460c aura EVC mode activated using xoen processor intel core 2. Live migration will be possible or will it had the VM being arrested and then migrated?

Of course the same LUNS will be assigned to two clusters.

If you need more info let me know.

Thank you.

You can VMotion of Intel to Intel

You can VMotion from AMD in AMD

You can migrate cold to AMD Intel / AMD to Intel.  The virtual machine must be turned off.

  • VMs migration of a non - CVS to EVC cluster cluster

    Hi all

I entered in an environment that has only one lit 9 hosts without EVC group:

    HostProcessor familyProcessorVersion ESX (i)
    Host1PenrynXeon E54504.0.0 update 2
    Host2PenrynXeon E54504.0.0 update 2

    Host8WestmereXeon E56305.0.0: no patches
    Host9WestmereXeon E56065.0.0 patch 6

I'm looking to create two groups, one for the three hosts of processor Penryn (dev) and a separate for six guests Nehalem/Westmere (prod).

If I put one of the hosts Nehalem in maintenance mode, remove the current cluster and place it in a new cluster with EVC lit with the CVO 'Nehalem' mode, I will then be able to vMotion VMs to two other guests the current to the new EVC cluster cluster Nehalem activated?

I understand that the virtual machines on the hosts Westmere must be powered off before their migration to the new Nehalem EVC cluster but can I Motion VM hosts to the new Nehalem Penryn cluster virtual machines?

Also the guests of Nehalem contain two types of processors: X 5550 and X 5560. This would impact on virtual computers fast vMotioning of a non - EVC cluster to a new cluster of Nehalem VCA?

    TIA

"If I put one of the hosts Nehalem in maintenance mode, remove the current cluster and place it in a new cluster with EVC lit with the CVO 'Nehalem' mode, I will then be able to vMotion VMs to two other guests the current to the new EVC cluster cluster Nehalem activated?

Yes. You go from Nehalem, Nehalem, no problem.

"I understand that the virtual machines on the hosts Westmere must be powered off before their migration to the new Nehalem EVC cluster but can I Motion VM hosts to the new Nehalem Penryn cluster virtual machines?

Yes. As long as the instruction set is lower or equal to Nehalem, you can do.

«As hosts of Nehalem contain two types of processors: X 5550 and X 5560.» This would impact on virtual computers fast vMotioning of a non - EVC cluster to a new cluster of Nehalem VCA? »

As long as the non - evc cluster is Nehalem(or lesser), it shouldn't be a problem. Everything you do with CVS is hide which instruction sets may be available to virtual machines.

  • EVC cluster creation / migration hosts him / minimal disruption VM

I am reshape my somewhat environment and need a bit of advice.  Currently, I have 2 ESX hosts in a non - EVC cluster and built a new blade server.  The new blade and 2 hosts will work together in a cluster active CVS.  I know that I have to run my EVC cluster "Intel Xeon Core 2" mode.  All 3 hosts will support this mode.

The News / 3rd cluster is sitting in his own vCenter, a VCA-activated cluster (in mode above).  Has no running VMS, it is already configured with network access and storage that matches that of the 2 existing/production hosts, which are currently managed by another instance of vCenter (but I am moving them out of this instance of vCenter in this new EVC-activated, to join the new blade.

All hosts running ESX 3.5 U4.  vCenter is 2.5 U4.

BIOS on guests must be modified to memory XD in so that they can be used in an EVC cluster, so I know I need to stop at SOME point to get them in the cluster active CVS.

I have an idea on how to address these requirements, with a big goal is NO interruption of service for running virtual machines.  VMs can be migrated to a new cluster, EVC-activated, coming from an old cluster VCA not compatible?  Most all current VMs based on Intel some running already in reference "Intel Xeon Core 2" EVC mode or I'm just kidding me and must arrest all of them at some point after they "seized" a VCA-activated cluster?

How would you do to this migration between vCenters and Clusters?  I think I can use 'Disconnect' the first vcenter (to at least avoid having to go into Maint Mode and then 'delete' of the first cluster/vCenter database)... also, I'm looking for the most logical get "here" to "there".  Thank you.

I see that the problem of different vCenters/Clusters is resolved.

What you need now is to know if you can VMotion between two ESXs with different processors. Before existing VCA, I have had... and had NOT a few difficulties doing this. It is not a problem when DIFFERENT pCPUs have the SAME GAMES of INSTRUCTIONS (SSE3, SSSE3, SSSE4 and so on...) Even if the sets are different, I was able to mix the MASK of CPU management options, which are by VM (thing that I didn't like... There should be an option to change this on a same CLUSTER basis or an ESX!).

I recommend you to test for differences between the sets of instructions of the Jepp of two ESX with this tool, I think it is the best out there:

    http://www.run-virtual.com/?page_id=155

If the sets of instructions are different, you have a problem, because you have to find the bits change in the MASK of CPU options in each virtual machine... and who needs a reboot, too. I think they will be different, because more recent pCPUs with FlexMigration (VCA compatible Intel processors), simply because they are new they surely have a new instruction set (perhaps SSSE4)

    Good luck!

  • Active EVC cluster will not allow guests to reach...

Recently, I installed a new vCenter Server 5 (vCenter 4.x running on a 32 bit OS then upgrade was not an option-fresh install)

I had 1 main cluster in the datacenter with HA and active CVS. All 10 guests were very well in it.

However, when the new vCenter Server has been up - and after having removed the old vCenter data center, when I went to add the host to the cluster (same as before active EVC mode) 6 guests joined very well, while the other 4 could not.

Everyone knows this? Just a reminder:

    new vCenter Server 5

all 10 guests were in an EVC cluster well

4 of 10 guests will not join the same cluster...

    Thoughts?

    Hi xxx,.

    XXX wrote:

Another question regarding VCA - if I point the old vCenter DB, the new vCenter server will this cause problems because a new database created for the new vCenter? How should I approach the issue?

You can't do it now, you can not connect vCenter 5 dB in the version of vCenter 4, different schema, tables etc. as I said in my previuos reviews, you must migrate to vSphere with DB 5

    1. Start vCenter old (I hope that you did not remove or disconenct any server from there, right?)

If you do not make any changes to the OLD vCenter vCenter should be able to connect to the return ESXi hosts and apply all the settings (including the CTS)

And Yes, I take off (unplug the old vCenter servers... so I guess that reconnect the old Server vCenter is not possible.)

If you simply disconnected the old vcenter ESX hosts (not deleted) you should be able to connect to vCenter old with old settings, but as I said earlier, I don't know what will happed with a VCA base (because you creted clusters with different CVS on new vCenter.)

  • Changing the Mode of EVC Cluster for guests of Intel

We cross a turnover of rental for our ESX host that puts out some old CPU architectures. Once we get rid of these hosts, we will be able to raise our EVC Cluster mode.

    (1) once ready, are there special precautions to take before changing the Mode of EVC Cluster? Then I just change the setting?
    (2) when the VMs will begin taking advantage of the new architecture CPU (a reboot will or VMs must they be turned off)?
    (3) any question with VM do not be put off for long periods of time after the VCA mode change?

    (4) all other things to worry about?

Is that you turn off and then turn on the virtual machines. A reboot of the guest operating system is not enough. A virtual machine determines which functions are available to turn on and cannot access all the new features that are added until the power is turned off.

    Hello

Cluster HA, we have 2 Guest ESXi 4.1 and model of processor are L5420 and E5649, and I am not able to Enable EVC mode.

Please suggest how we can activate CVS my cluster

    Hello

Theoretically, these two processors operate in the same cluster if you enable CVS for Intel host and select the profile "Penryn" Gen:

In the case where you have not seen this, here are the compatibility matrix: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1003212

  • Problem with moving of hosts with EVC cluster active

I have 3 servers Intel cluster with EVC mode.

I don't have a server in the cluster, and it is exactly the same as a single server in cluster (E7320 CPU)

When I try to move this clustered server I get the error: the host CPU hardware does not support CVS on cluster?

Have you already double check the BIOS settings. Intel-VT, Execute Disable Bit... This should be the same for all hosts.

Are the hosts of the same provider? Same models =?

  • VMotion of a HA cluster to another cluster without storage shared

I was trying to vmotion that two hosts and clusters of data from a virtual computer store between HA (no shared storage). Web client gives me this warning, but the migration is successful.

    The warning message is:

If this is done, the virtual machine will lose vSphere HA protection. If you proceed with this operation and it completes successfully, vSphere HA not will try to restart the virtual machine after a subsequent failure. vSphere HA protection is restored when network partitions or disk accessibility problems are solved.

    Is this a problem?

given that your VM left cluster HA, warning to inform you that VM is not going to be protected by HA.

If your target cluster where you moved your VM is also active HA then he will protect even by HA in this cluster.

In short, this warning is more to inform you that your VM leaves HA protection. as long as you know what you do, no problems.

  • VMotion for one HA cluster to another - no shared storage

I was trying to vmotion that two hosts and clusters of data from a virtual computer store between HA (no shared storage). The web client gives me this warning and I'm curious to know what he is talking about:

    **

If this is done, the virtual machine will lose vSphere HA protection. If you proceed with this operation and it completes successfully, vSphere HA not will try to restart the virtual machine after a subsequent failure. vSphere HA protection is restored when network partitions or disk accessibility problems are solved...

    **

HA is working in two groups, in terms of network and the heartbeat data store. So what exactly this message tells me thank you!

I get the same warning when turf migrate a virtual machine between two clusters and I select the source host unreachable destination data store. If I select a store different data that is shared by the two poles of competitiveness, no warning appears.

This warning is probably up for the vMotion suppose it will stay within the same cluster and check if the source host and destination can access the same data store. As the store of data (and config agent HA) is not shared between your source and destination hosts residing in different groups, it seems that the vMotion compatibility check guess it's a store of local data or something like that.

However, once migrated to the new cluster, FDM HA agents should choose the new VM place very well and protect it according to your settings in cluster HA, so nothing to worry about here.

  • Is it appropriate to have a limit of VMotion in a HA cluster?

Advantages and disadvantages? My boss likes to have more redundancy, I do not have VM sent across the boundary during failovers HA. I can't VMotion to hide!

    Thoughts?

If install you separate groups to different sets of material, I think that would solve most of your problems unless you / your supervisor are 100% against it. Doing so would give you the vMotion between compatible hosts, if there is a failure of custom VM move on another series of material outside the cluster.

  • Quick vMotioning problem between two servers HP BL460c Gen 9 when EVC enabled

I have two HP BL460c Gen 9 blades configured exactly the same thing with 2 x Intel XEON E5-2660 v3 processors in each of them. Both running the same version ROM (I36 06/05/2015) and running the same version of ESXi (5.0.0 build 2509828). They are managed by a Server Build 2656067 vCenter 5.0.0.

When I configure these two servers in a cluster with EVC disabled I am able to vMotion between them. However, if I activate the Intel EVC modes so I am unable to vMotion between these two identical servers.  Here is an example of the message that I get when I updated Westmere VCA mode

Host CPU is not compatible with the requirements of the virtual machine to CPUID level 0 x 1 'ecx' register

    Bits of the host: 0000:0010:1001:1000:0010:0010:0000:0011

    Required: x 110: x01x:11 x 1: 1xx0:xx11:xx1x:xxxx:xx11

    Inconsistency detected for these features:

    * General incompatibilities

If I disable CVS, then I can vMotion VMs between them.

I wanted to add these hosts to an existing cluster configured with EVC Westmere mode so that I was able to vMotion between old and new guests, but was unable to vMotion VMs off the new hosts, even if I tried to vMotion to another new host.

Configure a new cluster with only these two new hosts to so I could experiment. I can only vMotion between them if CVS is disabled. I cannot further increase the VCA mode on this new cluster, for example of Westmere to Sandy Bridge then I have virtual machines under tension within the cluster. For example: I put the VCA mode at Westmere, feeding on a virtual computer, when I go to change the CVS to Sandy Bridge mode I get the following message, I should be able to increase the VCA mode but may not lower it

The cluster cannot be configured with the selected Enhanced vMotion

Compatibility mode; The CPU features disabled by this mode may be currently in use

by slot voltage or suspension of the virtual machines in the cluster.

I get this message even if I try to set the VCA mode at the same level, that it is already.

Anyone got any ideas on how to solve this problem?

    Hello

Seems, your CPU supports 5.0 ESXi and vCenter 5.0, you must upgrade your vSphere vSphere 6.x for the VCA.

See the links below and also compatibility VCA matrix attached:
