vMotion stuck at 65%

We had 4 machines last week get stuck at 65% in systematic under the DRS vMotion.  The largest machines responded after a few hours in this State.  My guess is file delta or something mash finally to the high enough means to stifle the machine enough that it stops responding.  The only way I could fix is to restart the service vCenter and management on the host agents.  Then a reboot of the guest.

I caught of the server logs that this last happened, but I could use some help on where to find issues.

The hosts run 5.1.0 799733

Just as a precaution, I patched them all to 5.1.0 1065491.

I don't know if its going to help or not, but I would at least try to get some root causes of previous problems.

Hello

It seems that the GUEST COMPUTER is part of a replication of vSphere relationship. I'm not aware, that it is not taken in charge, but you could look to the replication monitor and check the status. The newspaper, it seems that you have problems with replicated disk and this is probably the first cause.

I have a cluster with active and defined DRS fully automated, but when I select the host for the maintenance mode of the VM NOT vmotion to another host in the cluster automatically. I have to vmotion manually each virtual machine to a host selected manually. There are a few VM with DRS off on them because they ONLY work on the host, they are assigned to (replication of virtual computer), but all the other VMS are defined 'by default (automated)'. Would it because I only have two of the host in the cluster?

  • vMotion works only in a switch and the management

Okay, I reconfigure my network in all of my 3 guests. I had vMotion (via VLAN50) in a vSwitch dedicated using binding rising vmnic0. vMotion between hosts has worked well. It looked like this...

    1.jpg

I want to spend vMotion for a vSwitch shared with the management network. So I deleted the vSwitch2 vmnic0 and added to vSwitch4. Then, I created a new port group for vMotion with a new IP address. See below.

    2.jpg

In vSwitch4 properties, the management network has vmnic7 as active and vmnic0 as the day before. vMotion is set in front of it. The vSwitch is configured to load balance from the originating virtual port ID.

vMotion does not work between hosts and gets stuck at 14%. I get a timeout between 10.10.50.70 and 10.10.50.71 (another host).

I don't know that my physical switch is configured correctly. I have two ports accepting traffic on the management and vMotion VLAN. If I pass around the allocation of vmnic (sort of management use vmnic0 as active and vmnic7 as before) then I can still ping the IP management. Also, if I move back to vSwitch2 vmnic0, vMotion starts working again so I guess I'm missing something on the side of ESXi.

    What Miss me?

    Thanks in advance

OK, problem solved. The webex engineer had in my screen and start troubleshooting this.

First of all, vmkping he had the IP address of the new IP address of vMotion to another host, that has failed. Then, he ran 'esxcfg-vmknic - l' and noticed that the old port vMotion group was always enabled. In the graphical interface it has disabled this by going into the properties of the vSwitch2 > vMotion port group and checked the property of vMotion. Then run vmkping, but it has always failed. Back in the GUI, he removed the vSwitch2 completely. Ran vmkping and it worked.

He assumed the problem was vMotion was trying to communicate through the old switch, in spite of remove me the adapters and the engineer vMotion traffic on the port group in this deactivation switch. It is useless for me to keep the old vSwitches, except as a back fall where vMotion failed. Seems I should have been more courageous and just removed them when I was creating the new vSwitch.

  • configuration of VMotion

    Hi experts

I'm new to vmware and I'm trying to deploy vmotion, but I'm stuck, I have a few question to understand

    (1) can I deploy vsphere 4.0 and vcenter without DNS and active direcoty

    (2) do I need to create a cluster to use vmotion

    (3) is there a document about installing vmotion from scratch?

    Hello

    (1) can I deploy vsphere 4.0 and vcenter without DNS and active direcoty

Yes. But you have to manually edit the host file (Test environment - ok)

    (2) do I need to create a cluster to use vmotion

N ° VMotion does not require cluster. Only the DRS needs the cluster.

    (3) is there a document about installing vmotion from scratch?

This video shows the demo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaGtMtYA6H0

    And the requirement is

    Shared storage

  • vMotion does not work after upgrade to vCenter 4.1

    Hi all

I've recently improved our vCenter 2.5 update 5 to vCenter 4.1 on a new server. our guests are all still 3.5 update 5.

The old server was removed and the 2.5 vcenter application license server is installed on the new vCenter.

in vCenter licenses section, it says under "VI3 vMotion" not used "for each host.

In the 2.5 license server reports vMotion licenses enough for all the guests, but also in use 0.

I'm stuck now to know how I can get active vMotion again. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Activation of vMotion on ESX4.1

    Every morning.

I am looking for some advise and help on activation of vMotion on our ESX4.1 of 2 nodes cluster. We have recently upgraded to the Enterprise version of vSphere until now have capabilities of vMotion. I try to configure things but because of my lack of experience with this am a bit stuck.

I activated the license that allows me to configure now vMotion.

I created a new VMkernel, assigned an unused vmnic, left the VLAN ID empty and selected 'use this port for VMotion group', put in the IP address and subnet mask but the DG was left blank. Everything seems to proceed without problem, but I see that the NIC does not appear "observed IP varies. Also, I cannot ping by IP VMkernel new are assigned. This course is not allowing me to use vMotion.

My question is, what do I need to enable the NETWORK card somehow? If so some can help me to do so.

Should the ESX restart? is there anything else I should do to complete the configuration of vMotion to allow me to use it.

    Help much appreciated.

    Thank you.

    > My question is, what do I need to enable the NETWORK card somehow? If so some can help me to do so.

Check the other side - switch. Port is enabled on the switch? Is port right VLAN?

    > The ESX needs to restart? is there anything else I should do to complete the configuration of vMotion to allow me to use it.

No, the restart is unnecessary here.

You can check network connectivity VMkernel interface with the vmkping service console command.

  • "Cold migration" use vMotion enabled network?

I have three installed ESXi hosts and they are networked with 2 different networks. One is the regular 100mbps network which I use as management network, which is also used to connect my client to connect to guests individually vsphere or vCenter Server (running under VM on one of the hosts).

My other is network of 1 Gbit/s which I am trying to qualify vMotion only for traffic. I activated vMotion (pronounced check) on the vmKernel port which is connected to the gigabit speed network while I disabled the vMotion on the slower network.

Yet, to my surprise, when I do 'MIGRATION' COLD (focus is on migration to cold, not hot vMotion), he always uses the slower network while the faster network remains inactive.

This seems to show that the path taken by Migration cold network is unrelated to the one taken by active vMotion vmKernel port. How can I make sure that cold migration and other activities 'Lourdes' happens ONLY through the network more fast.

I want to only use the slower network which is on my LAN to connect (on my laptop) Client vsphere vCenter Server or host directly if necessary. Can someone please? I like you a lot because I'm stuck now. Thank you.

Migration cold work through Console of Service / Management VMkernel and don't use VMotion VMkernel.

  • VMotion Timeout

I have three ESX 3.5 servers in a cluster.  Recently, the license has expired and caused vmotion stop.  We obtained the license of real and installed on the vc server.  The three portions of esx took the license and are approved for VMotion.

From ESX1 to ESX2 he has no problem with vmotion in both directions.  ESX2 to ESX3 or ESX3 to ESX1 VMotion makes about 10% and fails with the error Timeout operation.  I looked at some of the other positions on a tmeout on vmotion error, but they do not seem to solve the problem.

    Any ideas?

    SB

If vmotion is stuck at 10% (exactly 10%) and then times out, it's almost certainly a network problem. If you can vmkping from ESX2 to ESX3 and also come back, I would say that networking are ok. I've seen this before, in these cases, he helped run simply

    service mgmt-vmware restart

on ESX nodes affected. This restarts the process of management within VMware. Your ESX Fabien will out of management (gray out in vCenter) briefly, then return. Your virtual machines will not be affected by the present and continue to operate as ever. After these steps, vmotion will probably work again.

  • vMotion ESX 3.5 U3 to ESX 4.0 default

I'm about to halfway to my vSphere ESX migration. We have two facilities managed by a vSphere and VUM 4.0 vCenter. Things were progressing well with our upgrade to ESX 3.5 until yesterday. I have 6 left ESX host to upgrade, but I'm stuck.

The first group of ESX servers, updated very well with this process:

    1 created new EVC Cluster

    2. we added ESX hosts implement cluster

3 vMotioned off the coast of all virtual machines from one ESX Server

    4. upgrade this server ESX with MUV (reboot)

5 vMotioned VMs on ESX Server

    6. Repeat steps 3-5 until this than complete

However, with this second batch of ESX servers these steps do not work. When you try to vMotion ESX 4.0 host set to level, I get the message:

A general error occurred: the version of the product to the destination host does not support one or several features of the CPU currently use by the virtual machine. These characteristics of CPUID level 0 x 1 'ecx' register are indicated with a '1' bit:

    X 00: 0000:x00x:x 100:00 x 0:00 x 0: x 000: x 010

The difference between the two sites may be the version of ESX that I have updated since. Those ESX servers that fail to vMotion are ESX 3.5 Build 143128 (update 3), but I think that the ESX version which worked was update 4. I have not found a kb article or post related to this. Someone saw something on ESX U3 incapable of vMotion for ESX 4.0?

  • VMotion CPU compatibility - blades HP

    Hello

I know there are plenty of posts about this, but I'm kinda stuck none-the-less. I have 10 servers HP BL460c G1.

    (1) two running Intel Xeon L5420 UC and ESX3.5

    (2) two running Intel Xeon L5420 UC and ESX3.5 U4

    (3) four are running Intel Xeon E5420 processors and U3 ESX3.5

    (4) two running Intel Xeon E5420 CPU and ESX3.5 U4

The first four servers (1 + 2) above are all the same (they got the same partcode of HP and have been purchased together). (3) four are all the same, have been purchased together and have the same HP Partcode. The last two (4) were purchased after the other blades, but are the same Partcode of HP (3).

    Sorry if this becomes confusing.

Can I VMotion between all servers except the last batch (4). Can I VMotion between these two servers, but try to VMotion to or from these machines (4) for all others (1, 2 or 3) goes down, with the following error:

Cannot migrate new_host to old_host: host CPU is not compatible with the requirements of the virtual machine to the CPUID level 0 x 1 in the 'ecx' register

    Inconsistency detected for these features:

All of the settings in the BIOS (including Execute Bit disable them) are the same, and I am really puzzled.

    Anyone can shed some light?

    Thank you very much

You have activated VCA for the cluster in that your servers are?

  • Storage VMotion - a general error occurred: could not wait for the data.  Error bad0007.

    People,

I searched through this forum and have not found an answer that works in many positions out there, I say to myself that I would ask him once again.

    Here's the context:

We have 12 identical Dell M600 blades in 2 chassis with 16 GB of Ram, 2 x Xeon E5430, they are all connected to an Equallogic PS 5000XV iSCSI SAN on a separate iSCSI (vswitch1) with 2 cards network dedicated network and dedicated switch, console svc iscsi dedicated, dedicated VMkernel port for iscsi access. Net access (vswitch0) contains port groups VM for our various networks and a console port and vmkernel svc for VMotion with 2 separate NETWORK cards as well.

    We are running ESX 3.5 U3 and VCenter 2.5 U3 on Win2k3 R2

VMotion works between all servers, Storage Vmotion works for most machines, HA works and the value 2 host failurs with no monitoring of vm, DRS is set to manual for now I have a few machines on the local stores that I complete my rebuilt LUN, there is no set of rules for DRS and VMware EVC is enabled for guests of the Intel. However, I'll just describe one machine to do svmotion below.

    Here's the problem:

I'm trying to Svmotion via svmotion.pl - interactive, a Machine to Windows 2000 with a virtual disk and a virtual RDM. I am aware of the requirements for the RDM and required parameters for svmotion, independent is not selected for the RDM, and I also have svmotioned several machines linux and win2k3 with the same configuration without problem. In the interactive session, I choose to individually place the disks and I chose the virtual disk to only the virtual machine to be moved, essentially, as I saw it move vdisk virtual machine and then copy to the pointer of the RDM.

The use of the processor in this machine is about 25% average. but I try to run migrations at the time the lowest. and The Host it itself shows only about 5.5 GB of the 16 GB of RAM used. so I think we're good on the RAM. the volume/datastore that I'm migrating from has 485 GB free and the volume/datastore I migration towards a 145 GB free. the VM virtual disk is only about 33 GB.

I run the script the windows version of the RCLI svmotion. and when to begin the process, I get the following error at around 2 percent of the progress:

"Since the server has encountered an error: a general error occurred: could not wait for the data."  Error bad0007. Invalid parameter. »

After searching around, I found the following hotfixes to the U2 release notes

    • Migrate.PageInTimeoutResetOnProgress: Set the value to 1.

    • Migrate.PageInProgress: The value 30, if you get an error even after the setting of the Migrate.PageInTimeoutResetOnProgress variable.

I've made these changes, and I still get the same error.

When I dig in the newspaper, I see these entries in the journal of vmkwarning:
