VMware Converter 4.0 and Virtual Server 2005 R2 VM

I downloaded the new VMware Converter (Version 4.0.0) because he had promised for the merger as a target.

I have the image of Sharepoint 2007 VIrtual demonstration of Microsoft Server which works OK using Virtual Server.

The converter seems to be a valid VMware image on the PC where I run the converter.

I copy the VMware HD image created on my external Mac (OS X 10.5.6 Fusion 2.0.1) and merge it opens but there are questions.

1 fusion think that the virtual machine is an 'other' OS rather than Microsoft Server 2003 Enterprise, which is what the VM from virtual server. Therefore, I can not install VMware tools on the virtual computer.

2. If I change the type of operating system in the interface of Fusion Server 2003 Enterprise settings and that seems ok. Then, I am able to install tools in VMware Fusion.

3. after the required reboot to complete the installation of the tools, the VM comes back BUT the mouse pointer is no longer visible. The virtual machine makes it unusable at this point.

I remember posting on this forum awhile at the time where I realized first that the virtual server instance could be opened with a PC version of the workstation and I remember reading while the mouse pointer is a problem.

So is there anything, I can do to get the Fusion tools installed AND have a working mouse pointer?

Any help appreciated.

Jim

Yes, it is removed from the control panel and you can try on virtual machine converted however, it may not work.  As before you convert you can do anyway that you presented.  I like to make a copy and use it as I want to do some other preprocessing and then I just remove it when I'm done leaving the original intact, but whatever way works for you is fine.

  • Problems of mouse after the conversion of a hard drive file virtual Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 for ESXi 3.5

Today I used VMWare Converter 3.0.3 to convert a file evaluation VHD Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 (Virtual Server 2005) ESXi 3.5. It seems to work without error. However, I have a pending issue. In other words, based on the results of pilot of "VMware Pointing Device" in my being rooted at the bottom right of the Virtual Console of the mouse. The mouse buttons seem to work, but the mouse itself will not move. I have VMware Tools installed and that you have reinstalled them several times, just in case. If I change the mouse driver to the driver "mouse Compatible PS/2", it works, sort of. It moves around the screen and the same slides perfectly in and out of the console window, as you'd like. However, it is jerky. Hardware acceleration is maximum. The video driver and all the other features seem to work perfectly.

I converted a Windows 2008 VHD and it worked well.

If I do a new installation of Windows 2003, it works perfectly, mouse and all. If the problem seems to be limited to a hard drive Windows 2003 virtual conversion. I don't have a Windows 2003 machine to test if the importation which would have the same bug or not.

A very similar discussion was due in a previous thread several years ago http://communities.vmware.com/thread/36507.

Any help to fix this annoying bug would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Normally uninstall us the services that we believe may conflict with VMware devices (such as mouse), so that these problems do not occur. But just to be sure, it would be nice if you could 'uninstall' as suggested CONTINIUM and see if that makes a difference. An only problem here, is that you will not be able to uninstall the present of the VMware VM and you may need to uninstall this VS VM before proceeding with the conversion.

  • Download Virtual Server 2005 or 2008 for a Windows Vista Home Premium x 64?

I am new to computers and I am not informed on a lot of what happens, I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1545 and I want to download MS Virtual Server 2005 R2 or 2008 version, I downloaded the 2008 or thought I did, but I couldn't find it in the files he had an icon on my desktop. I went back and unfortunately he's said anything it would download on Vista Home Premium OS, I found that it would work on a XP SP2 and I was wondering if I can download that and then download the server 05 ' or ' 08? Where can I get XP SP2?  Apparently it don't load Windows 7 is this true? I downloaded a version 2005 to see what will happen after the download, I got pop ups saying that a modified installation wizard my computer and to download it again as I did but I still cannot find the server on my computer. Any help would be helpful as to what I could do to use Virtual Server etc. the Ms. Merci a lot for any help.

  • Running MS Virtual Server 2005 on XP Guest OS ESXi 4.1

I'm trying to run some microsoft Server 2008 training VM lab files that were designed to run on Windows XP and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2.

The specs of my computer Dell Precision 490 are as below:

    -8 GB DDR2 RAM

    -2 x 80 GB 10 000 RPM hard drives

    -2 x E5160 Xeon 3 GHz processor

-VT turned on in the BIOS

I installed ESXi 4.1 U1 for Dell computers and the installation was successful.  Then I downloaded the vSphere Client and proceeded to create a client Windows XP SP3 OS with 3 GB of RAM and 2 carrots.  The prompt of Windows XP works perfectly well.  So I installed .NET framework and MS Virtual Server 2005 R2 Enterprise on the computer.

Then I configure microsoft VM Labs.  The MS VM charger starts very well. However, when I start up a virtual computer in Virtual Server, it takes a long time for her to POST and see after the POST to BIOS screen just blanks out eventually and I waited 1/2 hour and never completed startup.

My question is if ESXi 4.1 supports another product of the virtual machine running in a guest OS?  Is there any configuration change, that I need to do to get this Setup working?

I also tried to do the same thing on XenServer 5.6 SP2 and it freezes completely the guest operating system XP when I start up a virtual computer in Virtual Server 2005.  I also tried these files before on a portable Windows XP x 86 with Core2Duo T7100 and 3 GB of RAM DDR-667 with VT turned on in the BIOS, loaded fine laboratories and the performance was reasonable.

    Thanks for any help.

To run nested virtual machines, you must configure the external VM to use hardware-assisted virtualization.  The execution mode by default for 32-bit Windows XP on some platforms is binary translation.  Please change the execution mode privileged for your guests 'VT - x or AMD - V' XP 'VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/IVR,"depending on your platform.  See also VMs of nested running.

  • VMware Converter 4.0 and 5.0 downloads

I believe that in order to download the 5.5.3 or 6.0 VMware Converter. I have a 2003 SP1 server to convert, and if I read correctly the documentation, to support the most recent version is 4.0.

I could install 2003 SP2, which means I could use Converter 5.0, but I'm not either of these versions of converter for download. They were abducted by VMware? If so, suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

    Thank you

To be a little more specific - SP1 is not officially supported, but the code that performs the conversion is the same regardless of the level of MS.

  • VMware Converter 4.3 and disc alignment

    Hello

I am interested in the use of VMware Converter for a future project of P2V, but the client has raised concerns on VMware Converter and disc alignment.  Basically, this means that the disk files are shifted to 63KO, so need for the virtual machine to read from 2 clusters of disk order to read 1 data segment.  This can slow the performance of the virtual machine.

I know that the migration of Platespin product can solve the problem, but its very expensive and I would go with the cheaper if possible option.

    http://www.Novell.com/DOCREP/2010/02/Curing_Disk_Misalignment_with_PlateSpin_Migrate_en.PDF

Does anyone know if the latest version of the converter solves the problems of alignment on the VMS?

    Thanks in advance

    Iain

No, VMware Conveter cannot solve the problems of alignment of the drive.   You have to watch the 3rd party.  If you are a customer of NetApp, you can watch MBRScan/Align, or maybe something like vOptimizer

  • Convert: DC, SQL, and App Server private vSwitch for app update test?

I need to upgrade an application that has been installed by my predecessor.  It is a web application that communicates with a SQL Server server to another server.

Here are the details of the machine:

    • DC1 - Windows 2003

    • SQL1 - Windows 2000, SQL 2000

    • App1 - Windows 2003, use IIS to app

I thought who would use Converter to convert each test VMs on my ESX host power off, change their vSwitch to a private vSwitch and then turn them on.  Two questions:

    • Does make sense?

    • Would it work without bringing down (I know that I would need to restart the Server 2000 during the installation of the Converter agent) nor affect the prod servers?

    • For any other questions?

If you find this information useful, please give points to "correct" or "useful".

Quite possible.  I do now with my existing servers.  I used the converter to make copies of all my servers VM.  For most for DR purposes, but also for dev/testing, as you plan to do.  For example, before installing an update about our applications, we charge then on the test of virtual machines.  (In fact, that's how I convinced my manager on why we should use virtualization.)  I did the conversion of servers as a project parallel on my own time and it showed our DC, Exchange, SQL & a virtual performed work on an isolated virtual switch station, hosted by my XP workstation.  )

When I did my conversion, I made a clone of warm with machines, but I did not all users online at this time.  You can stop your applications to reduce the risk of corruption.  I had to restore AD that I could not log on to the virtual domain controller after the conversion.  This does not always happen with P2V of domain controllers, but you should have a backup of your ad to the case where.  Cold clone would have less of a problem with this kind of corruption.

  • Snapshots of vCenter taking all space hard and virtual server crash

After completing the installation, I created a snapshot of a virtual machine (windows 2008 sbs) and all updates as starting point was what happening whatsoever. Since this snapshot, we have added a passage from the device to the virtual computer for snapshots are no longer created or restored. According to windows sbs, disk space is 200 of 420 concerts in use. When copying on a file of 50 concerts, virtual machine crashed said it doesn't have enough free space. I cleaned a little files and got the virtual computer restarted. I looked in the veiw storage and noticed 2 files, servername - 000001.vmdk and servername-vmdk. I tried to remove the snapshot through the Snapshot Manager, but it does nothing. can I manually remove the snapshot via the display of storage? and if so which file? I ask because if I change the setting of the virtual machine and choose the hard drive, it does reference the name of the server - 000001.vmdk. Thanks for your comments

    > can I manually remove the snapshot via the display of storage? and if so which file?

    NO.

you will lose data if you manually remove the 000001.vmdk.
It should consolidate the snapshot using Snapshotmanager.

You get errors when trying to "remove all" in snapshotmanager?

  • Is it possible to install Vmware converter in a virtual machine?

    Hello

I would like to know if its possible to install VMware converter in one machine virtual host Xen (WinXP)? We must find a way to convert a Xen virtual machine and import it into an ESX environment. So my first plan was to mount a hard drive of the virtual machine Xen host and install VMware converter.

Unless there is an easier way to do it.

  • Question about VMware Converter traffic

    Hi all

Hoping someone can shed some light on this. I do a P2V on a physical server in site A and destination ESXi host is also at the site. However, the field 'destination' in the VMware converter must be the vCenter server which is on the Site B (via a 6 MB WAN connection) as the destination host is managed by a vCenter server. My question is if I use the server vCenter (located on a WAN connection) as a destination and then choose the host located on the local site in the converter, converter traffic flow over the WAN? Or is it just flow locally from the Source to the Destination and just use the vCenter server as a server of type "authentication" for the initial Setup?

And as a side note, if I set the destination host ESXi as a destination in the converter instead of the vCenter server, I get the error indicated in this KB. http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & externalId = 2012310

With the help of converter 5.5.1

    Thanks for your help!

    Hello

Traffic passes from the source computer to the destination ESX. You will have a small slowdown in the wizard before you start converting mainly to get the VC inventory. See the graphics in the user pp. 11-13 guide

    Concerning

P.S. If you want to V2V, keep the server converter on site A, too as in this case, that the data passes through it.

Is there a reason to discourage the installation of VMware Converter in a VM (obviously, to convert other virtual machines hosted by the same infeastructure of vSphere)?

I used it in a virtual machine and it works fine, as long as there is no special bottlenecks in your virtual machines on the physical environment. I don't think that there is a preferred operating system as long as it is under the supported list.
