VMware newbie

A couple of reps told me that I need VMware infrastructure to be able to convert a P to V and to manage. That will probably be the first of many conversions to come so I want to know if I get off on the right foot. I'm getting my feet wet with a free version of the server on my xp machine and I have the infrastructure on this vm client... (Server 2003) when I try to add my xp as a host, it gives me an error that it can't add it since I can't cluster... is that my xp which cannot cluster (duh I know that this is impossible) or my 'free' vm that cannot regroup? I make all kinds of reviews so I can preset the right product to my customer.  Your help is appreciated... greatlly and be ready for more stupid questions

ESX and ESXi both run under their own opersting system called the vmkernel and it installs directly ontop of the material. There are also two components in the environment of vi - 3 - virtual center used to manage the environment VI-3 and ESX/ESXi hosts that makes virtualization. You have virtual Center > it running in evaluation mode with a license? If you do not need virtual center, you can download the free version of ESXi here - http://www.vmware.com/download/esxi/.

It is probably the best place to start - http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vi_pages/vi_pubs_35u2.html with the quick start guide.

  • VMWARE Newbie - installation problems with the guest operating system

I heard a lot about the use of VMWARE for a long time so I downloaded and then installed ESXI 3.5 on a test area.  I installed the client and have been able to create a new virtual machine.  However, I run into some difficulty with installing a guest operating system.  All the pdf that I could find have suggested that simply by putting a CD in the server's drive and then turn on the virtual machine would start the my guest operating system installation process.  Unfortunately, my VM doesn't seem to see my CDRom and tent drive a start-up network, followed by a brief wait for the message 'Operating system not found' timeout.

Can someone please help me find a way to create a new guest OS on my VM so that I can.

    1. understand the process

    2 start testing.

    Thank you in advance.

If you have installed of course the VI Client to create the VM, and you insert the CD into the ESXi host? You can go to change settings on the virtual machine, click the CD/DVD and select the option use the host device. Also ensure the connection to turn on is checked.  When you turn on the virtual machine, it should see the CD that you inserted in your ESXi host. Once you get the operating system to load, you can configure to allow remote desktop connections and access the VM as a traditional physical machine, rather than relying on the console of the VI Client view.

  • VMware newbie question

    I have a basic question...

In a physical server environment, the network adapters have IP addresses on them... ok, easy

But what about in an ESX environment? Let's say I have a physical server with 4 virtual machines on them... how many subnets should? Suppose I need a subnet for each virtual computer... so that's 4 here... what else? VMotion? physical network adapters receive IP addresses, too? The host ESX Gets an IP address?

    Thank you!

So in a normal environment, you will

ESXi management VMKernel - routable IP address (Note: default gateway must respond to ICMP, otherwise, you must modify the avancΘs das.isolationaddress to make HA work correctly)

vMotion VMKernel - IPs Non routable w / dedicated VLAN (you can have several for vMotion VMKernel in vSphere 5 use multi-nic vMotion)

Fault tolerance VMKernel (if necessary) - IP Non routable dedicated VLAN

(One or more) VMKernel/s of IP storage (iSCSI/NFS if necessary) - IPs Non routable w / dedicated VLAN

    Hope that helps

  • Moving Virtual Machine to 3.5 4.0?

VMware newbie here.  I installed virtual machines on an ESX host 4.0 under the terms of the trial for VSphere license.  I have much more 32-bit 64-bit servers... so I created two ESXi 3.5 servers, and if possible, I would move the virtual machines in ESX 4 box in the area of ESX 3.   Using VCenter and try to 'move' the machine it tells me that I can't because of the HAL or something to that effect.

Question is can I manually copy the virtual machines in the data store for these machines and change a file or something to make them moved?

    Thank you

    Josh

If you used the default, you will need to download VMware converter

  • ESX error after power failure.

    Hi all

I am desperate because this weekend we had a power failure and two of our ESX VM cannot start.

E-mail error is "cannot open the disk...". »

Reason: Error handler e/s no valid.

    What can we do?

A big thank you in advance.

Check your store for data, the VM configuration, disk descriptor (hard) or anything related to your storage space.

You can try to create the new virtual machine, add new vritual disk to existing aid & turn on the virtual machine...

  • Slow down the process to boot ESX 3.5

I had a problem with a generator and the power lost to one of my data centers.  When the site is back the ESX 3.5 server started before the SAN be ready to present LUNS to the ESX Server.  Therefore ESX server could not automatically start the server VM to comments from the data store was not available.  I was able to just scan the HBA, and then put on the server hosts with no problems.  If this happens again I want the ESX Server to wait an additional 5 minutes at start-up to allow the SAN compleley come and do the avialable LUN auto start the guests.  Does anyone know how to change the default timer on the initial splash screen in ESX to allow extra time for other devices to come online before the start of ESX?

    Thank you

You can do your ESX waiting a little bit more time before it start to begin your kernel by setting the timeout to config(/boot/grub/grub.conf) GRUB bootloader. By default must be within 10 seconds. Just simply wait for your San is ready.

  • HA does not not as expected on the ESX host

    Hello

I have a cluster with ESX 3 (v3.5 Update4) node that is configured to use HA & Drs During a practice session to the ESX host that I found that if I simulate a hard failure of one of the nodes in the cluster, ESX all guests arriving to run on this host VM will automatically starts not themselves on another ESX host after x amount of time. What I've done so far to solve problems is the following:

    1. allowed Virtual Machine put in power under the Configuration tab on each ESX host. Then, I moved that no matter what VM Autostart submenu in there appearing. This step is repeated on each ESX host

One thing to note after that: when the host has been stopped, the virtual machine would properly failover to another ESX host but not itself power on. I got feed manually on the client.

    2. I disabled the resource constraints under the Cluster Edition settings Menu to enable the machine to power on no matter what

There is nothing to change the question

    3. I fiddled with the priority of restarting the virtual machine in question to see if it would help, but it made no difference

    4. I enabled Virtual Machine control and settings left to 'High '.

    It has nothing

There are two messages that I keep seeing in the case where the window of the Cluster:

Failure of failover for the guest in question Warning Message

Not enough resources for the warning of the cluster failover

There are many resources available, so I do not know whence this second message. DNS seems in good condition I can solve the hosts & guests all with success in a direct and reverse search.

My goal here is to have the guest virtual computer turn itself on one of the other guests of the ESX cluster.

Any help would be appreciated... Thank you

Look in "response to isolation" on setting HA. Did you put it "Leaves the virtual machine" setting turned on or turned off?

If market, your host another try not to put the virtual machines from the virtual machines might still running on the original host, which can cause some collide ie.swap in use, the locked configuration files & etc.

No, you don't not need another license for Convertter as long as you use an instance of mono converter - also be warned converter on the WAN will take some time.

  • HA error on one of the three hosts

    Hello

I have set up a cluster with three servers and active HA.  Two servers work fine, however, one of the servers (esx1) has an error saying HA 'agent on esx1 cluster in MCC MCC has an error.  I checked the logs and looks esx1 determines that esx3 is the main agent, but it is impossible to connect to it so that it determines that there is no agent that runs on esx3.

I made sure that I could ping esx1 esx3 and I can't.  I also made sure it solves with the short name and the FULL domain name, and it does.  Not sure why it cannot connect... ideas?  The log is attached.

When the full domain name is configured properly, sometimes I just uninstall vpxa issues ESX host, disconnect & remove then add it to your cluster.

  • Storage SAN (data store) cannot be seen by guests

    Hi all

I have a strange problem with a newly added SAN (LUN) storage device.

I have 3 hosts running with a shared data store (SAN) which works very well. Now I have a new machine SAN shared connected to all guests, but when I "add storage" on host1 and refresh the storage to other hosts (Setup - & gt; storage - & gt; discount), I can see the data store created only on host1 and host3. When I choose 'add a storage' on host2 it destroyes the data store created and create a new one that is visible to host2.

I tried several times to add and refreshment, but the same results come once again.

    Any help would be appreciated

It would take a while for these hosts another to see the new store of data created on another host. How end restart your host 2?
