VMware tools and host of virtual hardware upgrade process

We currently have 8 guests esx4 we plan to upgrade to esxi5.  Our downtime window is relatively low.  We should have sufficient time to upgrade all hosts, but I'm not so sure that we will be able to get all the vm tools and equipment as well updated.  Is there a common question VMs on the older virtual hardware and vm versions tools until our next maintenance window?

Or would it be best to try to get half of the hosts and all the computers upgraded this time and the other half next time?  We have not all hosts the value automatically vmotion machines so that they remain in place unless you have an accident.  In addition, in this scenario is any problem to launch half esx4 and the other half to esxi5?

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you

Steve Hrabak

Is there a common question VMs on the older virtual hardware and vm versions tools until our next maintenance window?

There is no problem.  Your guests will not be able to take advantage of some of the new features added with vHardware 8, but as they are upgraded they will be.

http://www.VMware.com/support/vsphere5/doc/vSphere-ESX-vCenter-Server-50-new-features.html

y at - it no problem running esx4 half and half to esxi5

No worries there, too.  The only thing that you must do is upgrade to VMFS5.  The bed and breakfast vSphere5 no cannot be able to see a LUN VMFS5, but everyone can see and use a LUN VMFS3

  • Problem with the mouse and the network after the upgrade VMware Tools and hardware to virtual machine

    Hello world...

    I just upgrade my ESX 3.5 servers to vSphere 4.1. All this work is very well with the upgrade right now.

    After that, I tried to mise a niveau of VMware Tools and hardware of VM for my virtual machine and the problems started.

    I tried with two different VM (the two Windows 2003) and the problem appears for the two VM.

    I don't want to test another VM of the different operating system now, I'm afraid to go too far with update of Pentecost the problem I have now.

    I tried two VM to be sure that the problem is not only on a virtual machine.

    First of all, the mouse.

    My mouse has jerky movement. The button works, but sometimes I have to click several times to select what I want.

    I tried to uninstall the mouse in Device Manager and reinstall, but not really Pentecost improvement which (buttons works better, but... not so sure).

    Second problem.

    After you restart the server after VMmware tools and hardware virtual machine, the network link not working anymore.

    When I go to my network card configuration, IP settings are reset in DHCP mode.

    If I go again all my IP settings, Windows says:

    The IP address is hidden from the network and Dial-up connections

    folder because it is not physically in the computer or is a riser

    It does not work. If the same address is assigned to both adapters and

    they become active, only one of them will use this address. This may result

    in the incorrect system configuration. You want to enter a different IP address

    address of this adapter in the list of IP addresses for this card in the list

    Advanced IP address in the dialog box

    If I answer Yes to this, I have to enter a new IP address, and of course, this is not what I want to do.

    If I don't answer, the network working again.

    I think it is a strange message but the work of the vSphere maybe network now.

    Anyone have any idea why my work network and mouse as this upgrade after.

    All other VM that is not upgraded so far works great.

    Thanks in advance...

    (1) make sure that your hardware acceleration is safe enough. I got the upgrade down my hardware acceleration several times already.

    (2) sounds like the new drivers for your NIC cards took over and VMware is basically a new card NETWORK for you. Follow these steps to disable it:

    (a) open a command prompt

    (b) type (without quotes): 'set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices = 1' and press ENTER.

    (c) type (without the quotes): "start devmgmt.msc"

  • Upgrade VMware tools and hardware on vSphere

    Hello

    After a few questions, I seem to be a host to complete my move to vSphere, and I'm looking at the next steps - VMWare tools and update virtual machine hardware.

    Now, it seems reasonable to me to upgrade to VMWare tools, but the material I'm undecided.

    As I see it, VMware tools requires a reboot, I won't be able to do in working time, but that's just a reboot (sure of 60 odd servers, but still it is probably worth the time spent), but the material of vmware seems not critical for me? VMS seem to be running ok (Mix of Linux, Windows 2003 and Windows 2008) and I wonder if I'll get all the benefits of the upgrade of these? Is there something that puts me in danger if I let the computer virtual hardware version 4?

    It is mainly a question I have organize downtime, and the upgrade seems not smooth at all (completely detach existing NIC? Loss of MAC address I linked to the servers of licenses etc.) so if there is no benefit at this point, I'll be ok to keep the version 4?

    All advice appreciated, if I missed anything big I'd appreciate knowing what!

    Thank you!

    Hello.

    You will miss out on some of the new features Virtual material, but if you're not having performance issues it is in somewhat of a moot point.  The biggest potential problem is leaving all these VMs v4 and runs the risk of another (or one that follows) version of vSphere perhaps not material no longer v4 support.  Hardware upgrades are inevitable, so it's really just a matter of do it now or do it later.  If you are comfortable delaying the inevitable, so there is no reason to upgrade to v7 now.

    Good luck!

  • A few questions about VMware tools and U2 of ESXi 4.0 and 4.1

    In my workplace, there is a cluster of vSphere 4 six nodes containing 5 servers ESXi 4.0 U2 (4.0.0, 261974) and a server ESXi 4.1 (4.1.0, 260247).  Aparently, it was built that way in the environment concept then deployed into production and now I head for VMware deployment.  This environment is up in producgtion now for over 8 months with this configuration, but starting to be more widely used.  Ideally, I know, we should have all the nodes on the same patch level, but here's the question.

    Models used to get the operating system to the virtual machines in this environment were built on the apparently new 4.1 server using this version of VMware tools (Version 8.3.2 build-257859).  All so most of the running virtual machines, use this version of VMware tools.  Using this new version of VMware tools on a virtual machine running on a server ESXi 4.0 U2 ESXi would cause issues?  ESXi 4.0 U2 servers push version 4.0.0 build 261974 of the VMware tools, identical to the ESXi version.  The status of the VMware tools when the new 4.1 version is running on a host of U2 4.0 still shows as OK and we have operated this way for more than 8 months.

    Another problem is that we have still a few other virtual machines with the 4.0 build U2 VMware tools so when these virtual machines will eventually be VMotioned to an ESXi 4.1 host, VMware tools show as outdated.

    Until we can get of planned downtime to upgrade the servers, it should be like that for several weeks if possible.  We have HL7 interfaces on many of these virtual machines that are not too good with VMotion and being in an organization of health care, sometimes difficult to get downtime.  It is perhaps more possible to downgrade the only host to 4.0 U2 until we can plan time to upgrade all hosts.  I would keep the node in the cluster, even if for the moment, assuming that to release 4.1 with other guests at 4.0 U2 should not cause problems, since we can use the resources of that node in this cluster.

    Until then, ensuring that all the virtual machines in the cluster use the ESXi version 4.1 of the VMware tools (Version 8.3.2 build-257859) would be acceptable?  I just wanted to check that this version should be fully backwards compatible with the previous version of ESXi 4.0 U2, and as I mentioned before, its run like that and have noticed yet all the problems and the status of the VMware Tools also records OK when this new version works on ESXi 4.0 U2 host computer.  I just wanted some feedback from those of the community.

    Thank you

    Exactly, do you VMotion, virtual host 4.1 machine and if necessary would upgrade the VMware tools. To install VMware tools, it is necessary to restart the virtual machine.

    And another option that I say is the first upgraded version of all hosts ESXi4.0 U2 to 4.1, after that, you do an upgrade in the tools of all virtual machines vmware.

    Perfect.

    You´re are welcome!

  • Problem with VMWare Tools and the virtual drive

    Hello

    I installed the test version of "Workstation" and installed a windows 7 x 86 non-virtual DVD drive mapped, which is mounted on D:\.

    Subsequently, I installed all Windowsupdates and after that I tried to install the VMWare Tools.

    But every time I get the message that I should look on the 'virtual' drive on D:\.

    But there is no virtual drive, it is my DVD of the hostsystem.

    Is there a way to mount a virtual drive with tools or install them in another way?

    Thanks in advance

    Hello

    You can directly install the VMware tool configuration by copying the setting in the machine and manually install the same.

    Try VMware on another machine tool in which you will get the installation... Copies on disk and then move it to your new VM and do a manual configuration.

    Then I'll check before virtual machines in virtual machine material

    Get-content.\vms.txt | % {get - vm $_} | Select ' Name,@{N='ToolStatus; E={$_. {{ExtensionData.Guest.ToolsStatus}}

    is there a better way to put it together in a script?

    It is ok, but not fully automated.

    So that the process is fully automated, you could do something like this

    $vms = get-Content.\vms.txt

    # Update VMware tools

    $taskTab = @ {}

    Update-tools - VM $vms - RunAsync | %{

    $taskTab.Add ($_.) ID, $null)

    $status = get-task-Id $_. Key

    if($Status.) State - only ' works') {}

    $_. Key

    }

    }

    $keys | %{

    $taskTab.Remove($_)

    }

  • VMware Tools and VM migration

    I have a question: -.

    Suppose we have a esxi host with 2 versions one with esxi4.1 and another with esxi5.5 and vm is running on esxi5.5 with the latest vmware tools but with material 7. is it possible to migrate this virtual machine to esxi4.1 without any problems even with vmware to update tools?

    From the link I provided above:

    Extended support of the VMware Tools does two things:

    1. it allows virtual computers running older versions of VMware Tools to operate in a supported configuration on more recent versions of ESXi.

    2. it allows the VMS running newer versions of the VMware tools to run in a supported configuration on older versions of ESX/ESXi.

    So, the answer is YES, you can run a virtual machine with VMware Tools of ESXi 5.5 on an ESXi 4.1 without problem.

  • VMware HA and recovery of virtual machines (not to restart them)?

    Hello

    I need help clarify something with VMware HA.

    When I do manually our primary ESXI host, the VMs appear and restart on the secondary host.

    Yes virtual machines are restarted automatically, but it does not resume the virtual machine without interruption as DRS and provides that vMotion.

    Is there a way I can configure HA to not restart and resume the virtual machine in place without interruption?  If not, what are my other options I can configure in VMware ESXi do exactly, if any?

    Thank you very much

    Jan

    HA is used in the event of a host failure, so there is no chance to migrate a workload (curriculum vitae) to another host. What you are asking for can be achieved with FT (Fault Tolerance) where a secondary VM is created on a different host and basically synchronized with the primary virtual machine. In case of failure of the primary virtual machine VM school can resume (almost) without interruption.

  • Update the VMWare tools on all machines virtual Windows

    Is it possible to use the PowerCLI update the VMWare tools on all virtual Windows machines to the latest version. I know I can do this individuall but I wanted to see if there a way to use something similar to a for each loop through a virtual machine at a time. I'm new to the power of vmware and the vix api cli and it's the first task I am trying automate (automating installation of all guests including linux would be perfect if I could loop through all clients using the same command). I am a new detailed explanations would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Loren

    It's pretty simple in his PowerCLI, you combine just 2 cmdlets with a pipeline.

    Get - VM | Update-Tools

    You can make the choice of the guests a little more complex.

    For example:

    Get-VM-name Srv * | Update-Tools

    will update only the tools on customers whose name starts with SRV.

    See the cmdlet Get - VM for more details.

    You can also set it update tools should immediately reboot if necessary.

    What you can do with the NoReboot parameter on the cmdlet Update-Tools .

    Get-VM-name Srv * | Update-tools - NoReboot

  • VMware Tools and the vMA

    Hello

    I noticed that VMware tools shows as obsolete for vMA 4.0. I ran the command ' sudo vima-implementation to date update "to update the vMA.

    The reason is that I need to install a script for our UPS on the vMA to stop customers automatic and host when AC power is lost and before that sinks in the battery, this script needs VMware tools running and I guess he wants to the most recent version.

    Anyone know if VMware tools is supposed to be a part of the updates? and if not can just download the rpm and execute it?

    Thank you

    John

    Vima-update is update patches on vMA and has nothing to do with VMware Tools. As long as VMware Tools is running, you will be able to make a stop of comments, it does not require the most recent version. The reason for which the tools of vMA is outdated is probably due to when it was released, the Tools version was the latest version and compatibility purposes, they kept to that. If you want tools to update, just right click on the VM and install VMware Tools.

  • VMware Tools: Shrinkage of the virtual disks - what is - this intended?

    Hello

    Maybe I'm missing something, but what is the "Reduction of the virtual disks' in VMware Tools used for?  It seems to me that 'reduce the virtual disks' is the only thing that it does not.

    I have a virtual disk in a virtual machine with Windows 2003 Std x 64.  A 'volume' (a partition on a dynamic disk) disk occupies 10 GB on a virtual disk.  The rest of the space on the virtual disk is not assigned.  I want to "shrink" the virtual disk to recover the unallocated space.  But the function "reduce virtual disks" VMware Tools seems to allow me only to "shrink" the disk volume or partition.  I want to reduce the virtual disk.

    What Miss me?

    Thank you.

    Your best best for shrink disk is to use VMware vCenter Converter.  The fret is more than one optimization tool, a bit like a Defrag tool, but will not reduce the size of the disk of the virtual computer.

  • 5.1 - VMware Tools of Patch ESXi510-201212402-BG has not detected if necessary

    We recently upgraded to vSphere 5.1 and update the VMware Tools with the package included, build a 782409 on all of our Windows customers.  We have been harassed by her vomit of Event Viewer ' error in the RPC receive loop: RpcIn: cannot send ' as laid down in the Patch ESXi510-201212402-BG.  I used Update Manager to push ESXi510-201212402-BG to all our guests.  Running ' esxcli software vib list ' on the hosts indicates that the generation VIB light-tools has been updated.  However, all VMs in vCenter appear as 'Running (current)' and when you log in the operating system, the VMware Tools icon in the system tray does not indicate that an upgrade is waiting as previously on 4.1 where he showed the little yellow exclamation point.  If I run the installation/upgrade VMware Tools, the new version, build the 913578, is installed.  Why isn't the new detected VMware tools and view the virtual machines running the older generation as being obsolete?  What triggers it?

    As a side note, I was disappointed as everything I read about VMware Tools 5.1 declares "nondisruptive upgrade VMware Tools - after you "

    upgrade to the VMware Tools available with version 5.1, no. that it recharges will be necessary for the subsequent updates VMware Tools. " This is not true of all that construction installation 913578 on top of the 782409 require a reboot.

    Use the Update Manager to confirm that you have a base line called "VMware Tools update to Match Host (Predefined). Attach this baseline to your virtual machines and a scanner. This will determine if your VM Tools are up to date.

    Yes I agree, VMware have misled us on their VM without tools do not reboot!
