vmWare vmdk max size of the server
Hi all
I'm trying to find what, if any, vmdk size limit is on vmware server 2. The situation is this: we create a virtual machine on an ESX4 computer and import it on vmware Server on Win2k3. I know this isn't a good idea, but it's only for the proof of concept and no production at the moment, ultimate goal should we to a machine in ESX ESX. Now, the reason why I need to figure out what size max vmdk, is that I need a vmdk ~1.5TB. Server documentation mentions a locally created max size of ~ 1 TB, but I can't find any mention of moving a virtual machine server and any restriction of file size it. The 3 2 k machine will be sufficient space via a mounted network drive (assuming that the virtual machine files can live on a Windows network share, but what I saw during the search around I think this part is possible). Yet once, isn't ideal, but it's a game completely temporary.
The size on the last workstation limit is 950 GB - as much as I know it's the same thing with VMserver.
Although it is possible to create more great VMDK seem not to be unstable - at least that is my experience during the 2 TB VMDK test in a 2003 VM
I wouldn't use VMDK more than 950 GB in production

In DatastoreBrowser vmdk file size not the same as busybox?
Hello
I have a few virtual machines in ESXi 4.0 U1, I installed the virtual disks as "thin" then they should grow in size, when the virtual machine is increasingly large.
If I look at the vmdk files in the DatastoreBrowser of vSphere Client 4 is the case and I have a few files 20 GB for my Windows Server 2008 vmdk files.
But if I look in the real file from busybox system (I use WinSCP or putty and even with Trilead VMX) then each vmdk-dish has the maximum size of 100 GB (exactly 107 GB). The vmdk file is named hard-plate here and not hard like in the DatastoreBrowser.
If I download the file DatastoreBrowser vmdk to a Windows machine that I get a vmdk-apartment with great size and not the size specified in DatastoreBrowser.
Surprisingly all-flat-files vmdk together (seen in WinSCP or VMX) are larger than the disk HARD Physics (500 GB).
What is c?
Thank you, franc
Hello
as said marcelo, thin discs works on the VMFS partition level. The thin disks does not exist outside of a VMFS partition.
For example, is run you 'df - kh' you can see the real disk (distributed) of the VMFS partition space. In other words, you can see the total amount of disk space used by the thin disks of the virtual machines.
Anyway, you turn in the busybox "ls - sh" (instead of 'ls - lh') you will see the real space of the thin virtual disk for a particular virtual machine (vmdk).
But the problem is that tools such as winscp see the size of the disk space of the thin disks. This tools see the size of the reserved the vmdk file. Then, it copies all the file size of the disk as a thick disk. And of course, the target file system partition that will contain the thin disks, does not support thin disks.
A thin disk with 3 GB of actual data (distributed) and a 10 GB reserved size is copied on the net by Winscp as a 10 GB drive.
Best wishes / Saludos.

What is the VMDK max size I can create on 2 TB LUN recommended?
Hello, guys!
I have VM DB with system files and configuration stored on a LUN and a few 2 TB LUNs, where the DB data are stored.
2 TB LUN when I create new VMDK file that the size maximum of the VMDK file I could create?
2 TB? 1.99 CT? 1.8 TO?
I have to leave no space left for the needs of VMWare?
Thank you!
Before vSphere 5.5, the maximum virtual disk size is 2 TB less than 512 bytes. If you need create virtual maximum snapshots disk size 2 032 GB because of General fresh metadata in the snapshot file. With vSphere 5.5 and virtual machines running on the latest version of HW, virtual disks can have a size of 62 to on a VMFS5 data store.
Basically, there is no need to leave a large amount of free disk space on a data store. However, in case you want to or need to create snapshots, remember that - from vSphere 5.0 - snapshots are by default created in the same data store as virtual disks of their parent. In addition, vSphere can store some data on the data store, for example for HA datastore heartbeats. So I would say that you leave a free space on the disk (a few GB should be ok).
As a side note. If you go to the maximum capacity of data store, you can reconfigure the alarm of the use of the data store.

XPS 435 t/9000 Max size of the hard drive?
Hello
I have a XPS 435 t/9000.
I currently have two, 1 to SATA HDD and need for additional storage space.
There is a 3rd available Bay, a connector available on the motherboard and the power available.
Reference Dell tells me the motherboard is a Microstar International X501H and the motherboard will limit myself to a 1 TB drive.
HOWEVER, I found several online vendors that sell to larger capacity of disks and state that they will work on this machine.
I will ONLY use the 3rd disc as a data reader and will not boot from it.
Can someone tell me DEFINITELY HARD drive supported (data only mode) via the connector on the motherboard.
IN ADDITION,.
Are there options to add a new HARD disk controller to an expansion slot? (I have no slots half remaining due to other small improvements). I need all THE details on what I did not research on this yet.
Thank you very much!
INTEL RST less than 10.1 DOES NOT support greater than 2 TB.
Intel RST RAID DOES NO more than Volumes Raid 2 to support.

How determine the size of the flat.vmdk when all you have is a delta
I need to find a way to determine the face of the virtual disk size parent but all that I've got a delta.vmdk
the original descriptor of the delta.vmdk wiped white
No logfiles, the vmsd vmsn files or similar there are other sourcesall I have is the *-delta.vmdk
any ideas?

Dell virtual disk are larger. You want to increase the size of the data store.
Hello
I started the implementation of a server ESXi 5.5 Update 1 this week. I didn't know Dell shipped the server with two virtual disks instead of one. I realized this _apres_ that I had already created the data store and setup a few virtual machines to the breast. I called Dell who sent specific instructions to increase the removal of the second (empty) virtual disk and add it to the main. In the end, I increased the single VD from 2 TB to 3 TB and I want to give the remaining space in my store of data.
I tried to follow the article here that explains how to do this via the CLI.
Well, he did not altogether. Fortunately, I was able to recover my datastore my setting start and end sectors to their original numbers. But I'm still left with this almost 1 TB of space that I can not attribute to the data store. After that I reread storage adapters in the client, the new Dell disk size resulted under measurement devices. Click on "increase...". ", generates the following error which led me on the way to the CLI method:
Call "HostDatastoreSystem.QueryAvailableDisksForVmfs" to object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi '[myservername]' failed.
I will paste my notes that I took everything by jobs. Things have exploded the rails when I put 4 partition size to the largest size. Any help, please?
---
I use that as a guide:
1 use start hardware device management tools to increase the capacity of additional disk to the device. For more information, commit your hardware provider.
This has been done. The new size of the virtual disk is 2791,88 GB (TB 2,79188)
2. open a console to the ESXi host.
Pretty simple.
3. get the DeviceID for the data store to change.

Update:
Since it was such a new machine, not in active production, we have safeguarded the VMs management off the ESXi host. Then flattened the virtual disk, recreated, and then created a store of data with the right size. (TPG this time, naturally.) We put the management of virtual machines on the data store. For Windows virtual machines, we have restored the using AppAssure. Everything is ok now.
Need to add a new item to the list of punch: check what Dell has done the configuration of the virtual disks. :-)

Maximum size of the VMDK file we can assign during the P2V?
Hello.
We conduct P2V for a server physical and would like to address one of the disk for P2V.
Rather than extend the VMDK disk in the future, we would like to extend during P2V. Given that VMDK file maximum size is 2 TB for ESXi host, we can assign 2 TB for this VMDK file OR there is a recommended maximum size to use?
Thank you
I have myself yet, but I guess you should be able to assign the maximum size of virtual disk, depending on the block size of the data store (for ESXi versions before the 5.x/VMFS-5). That said, I suggest that you don't assign it more than 2 032 GB in order to create snapshots for this virtual disk (see "calculates the time system required by the snapshot files" at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384)

VMDK size is not equal to the size of the comments
I'm using vmware workstation 7.13 and build a virtual machine with win xp as a guest operating system.
I put the vmdk as thin provision with size max 15 GB
inside the guest os he say she used 2 GB (I check the size of the vmdk file in the host and the same 2 GB so)
then I test the guest operating system by placing a large file (about 3 GB) and to increase the size of altogether 5GB vmdk
but when I remove the 3 GB file which resident in the guest operating system, the size of vmdk are 5 GB
so the question, not the size vmdk is not resize depending on the size of the guest?
I tried to compact and defragment the vmware workstation tools vmdk file, but it does not change the size of the vmdk file
I put the vmdk as thin provision with size max 15 GB
Thin configured virtual disks are for ESX 3.x and higher and cannot be created by the user of VMware Workstation interface. The user of VMware Workstation interface creates Sparse or Growable type virtual hard drives.
I tried to compact and defragment the vmware workstation tools vmdk file, but it does not change the size of the vmdk file
Free space must be cancelled before the shrinkage and compaction to a virtual hard drive and this is accomplished by using the function of narrowing of the VMware Tools in supported operating systems and file systems or other methods of zeroing free space should be used first, and then compact.

VMDK not attached to the VM size?
I'm trying to get a list of VMDK on a store of data and their associated file size, so I can attach them to a virtual machine in a workflow. I slightly modified the getAllVmdkFile action to return a hash with filename size = properties. However, the size of the VcFileInfo object is null. How can I get the size of a given VMDK file name or how can I do to make the VcFileInfo object has populated size property?
Code:
meh = new Properties(); var fileQuery = new Array(new VcVmDiskFileQuery()); var querySpec = new VcHostDatastoreBrowserSearchSpec(); querySpec.query = fileQuery; System.log("searching: " + u_datastore.name); var task = u_datastore.browser.searchDatastoreSubFolders_Task("[" + u_datastore.name + "]", querySpec); var searchResults = System.getModule("com.vmware.library.vc.basic").vim3WaitTaskEnd(task,false,5); for (var i in searchResults) { for (var j in searchResults[i].file) { System.log("found " + searchResults[i].folderPath + searchResults[i].file[j].path); System.log("size: " + searchResults[i].file[j].fileSize); // meh.put(searchResults[i].folderPath + searchResults[i].file[j].path, searchResults[i].file[j].fileSize); meh.put(searchResults[i].folderPath + searchResults[i].file[j].path, 0); } }
Well, it seems that setting all flags to 'true' done the tour and return file sizes are much more realistic.
var queryFlags = new VcFileQueryFlags(); queryFlags.fileOwner = true; queryFlags.fileSize = true; queryFlags.modification = true; queryFlags.fileType = true; querySpec.details = queryFlags;
Don't know why it behave this way, but it seems to work

Incorrect (inflated). The VMDK file size
Hi all
I am running VMware Workstation 10.0.2 build-1744117 and scratching my head as to why the size of my. The Guest Windows 7 x 64 newly deployed VMDK file is so great despite having supplied a vDisk 60 GB and opting for do not pre-allocate space. My VMDK file size is close to 60 GB, while on the comments, it shows only ~ 21 GB consumed. I tried without success the compaction. It is not compatible with other virtual machines, I in which the VMDK file size corresponds to the capacity in use on the vDisk. Please find below the screenshots of corroboration. It would be much appreciated if someone could shed some light on why this is the case.

How can I reduce the size of the hard drive of my guest? (Ubuntu server)
Hi all
When I built my (Ubuntu Server 12.04) VM guest on VMware ESXi 5.1, I was a little over zealous and create it with a 500 GB hard drive. I found now that a 100 GB would easily suffice.
I would like to reduce the hard disk up to 100 GB. How can I do this? It seems pretty obvious, how on Windows using the stand-alone converter but on Ubuntu server? I have no idea where to start and I can't find any info!
Also, could someone please explain to me why the real used on this prompt on the host drive is 500 GB? When you use VMWorkstation the right file size grows with disk space actually used the guest. Then under ESXi, the size of the file begins at the size you specified for the server. This can be changed?
Thanks in advance.
Export OVF model is the one you want. This allows you to save the entire VM to one or several files (unique).

What is the size of the 1st copy of Vmware snapshot delta
If I understand instant, it creates a copy of your image.when delta you first create the snapshot, the snapshot (hard) size is a few megabytes (1000 k or more) and the size of the RAM.
Example - my primary VM's with 4 GB of RAM and 30 GB of disk. the VMDK file size is 30 GB
first preview, file snapshot.vmdk will be created which will be around 1000 k
We will create a file over 4 GB RAM
space required for the SNAPSHOT so total is 4 GB + 1000 k is this correct?
Now, if I use instant, it can push up to the original size of VM primary, means it can grow up to 30 GB.
that mean, when I restart the snapshot virtual machine size will be 60 GB?
Please advice
Concerning
Avinash
Disk space required when you create a snapshot depends on whether the virtual machine is turned on or off. What you describe on the file .vmsn is correct for the virtual computer power on. The .vmsn file contains the State of the virtual machine (memory) as well as its configuration (.vmx file). With the virtual machine off there is not need to backup the memory so that the file is only a few hundred bytes in size.
The initial sizes for files hard depending on size delta set virtual disk service, since delta files are fragmented files that contain metadata in addition to the user data. It also makes a difference if the virtual machine is turned on or off.
..., when I restart the snapshot of the VM size will be 60 GB?
No, snapshots files store only modified data blocks that are written with the active snapshot. Each of these blocks of data points to the original location in the basic disk. So if delete you / consolidate these blocks are written to the original location in the Basic virtual disk file.
Please take a look at for example http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015180 which explains the functioning of snapshots in VMware products.

VMware tools create too many temporary files on the server TS user profiles
Hi guys,.
I have problems with the TS and Citrix servers where we have a restriction very strick to profile normally around 30 MB sizes. Temporary files of VMware tools normally use 10-18MB and this affects many users when opening large spreadsheets and we have to keep manually delete the files.
You guys can suggest alternatives here please? Hosts run ESXi 4.1
Thank you!
You can work around the problem by changing a value in this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order\
Workaround disables the functionality of VMware shared folders in the virtual machine. Because the feature is not supported by ESX Server or GSX server, turn it off is not a problem. However, if you migrate the virtual machine to the workstation, you not have access to VMware files shared unless you re-enable the feature.
Warning: This procedure is to modify the registry. Incorrect changes to the registry can leave your system unstable or cannot run. Always back up the registry before you edit it and be cautious to make changes to the registry. VMware assumes no responsibility for the problems that may arise.
- Access the Windows registry. Choose Start > run, and then type regedit. The window of the Registry Editor opens.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order\.
- Click ProviderOrder , and then click change. In the edit string value dialog box, change the data value chain and remove the word hgfs (or vmhgs).
- For example, if the string data value contains LanmanWorkstation hgfs (or LanmanWorkstation, vmhgs) , and then replace it by LanmanWorkstation.
- If the value data string contains hgfs (or vmhgfs), then delete it and leave the value data string empty.
- Click OK.
- Close the registry editor. Choose file > output.
- Restart the virtual machine.
If you want to re-enable the VMware shared folders feature, add , hgfs (or vmhgs)
at the end of the value data string, or a whole chain hgfs ( or vmhgs)
If it is empty. Alternatively, you can reinstall VMware Tools, using the Complete
option to re - activate the shared folders.

Cannot reduce the size of the VMDK file
OK, here's my story:
I started with the growable virtual 40 GB HD default mapped as C:\ on my virtual machine. The HD received complete and had poor performance and I converted it to a prealloue 100 GB HD. It worked OK for a while, but then I created a new virtual HD mapped as D:\ to store data.
So my problem was C:\ was too big which made backup of the virtual machine of your time, and I thought I have to resize C:\ 30 GB. My first test was to convert it to a HD growable. This remains a 100 GB on the host vmdk file.
Then, I used the two compacts from the GUI and stop at the command prompt on the convert HD Nope, still 100 GB vmdk file on the host.
Then I used a disk management program to reduce the size of the c:\ partition with 30 GB and run both shrink and compact again. Guess what, the vmdk file is always 100 GB.
I'm running out of ideas on what to do to reduce the size of the vmdk file. Any ideas?
Yes, I did, but I used compact from the GUI and stop at the command line (vmware - vmdiskmanager.exe). At that time I didn't there's a shrink option in VMWare tools.
In this case try to diminish with the extra partition (temporary).
