VMware VSAN vs Nutanix

Hi all

I like to discuss the pros and cons of both solutions

Pros - VSAN is integrated into the vmkernel, Nutanix ia a virtual machine.

Cons - Nutanix is more flexible, interact with the other hipervisors (XEN and Hyper-V)

Pros - vSAN is compatible with the most expensive equipment and only nutanix counterpart hardware.

more questions for this dircussion?

Pros - VSAN is integrated into the vmkernel, Nutanix ia a virtual machine.

In my opinion, there are very few benefits to be integrated into the vmkernel, is one of the benefits of running in a virtual machine that is not depends on the version of the hypervisor.

For example, you can run the latest version of Nutanix with vSphere 5.5, is not possible with VSANS since its related to the version of the hypervisor.

Cons - Nutanix is more flexible, interact with the other hipervisors (XEN and Hyper-V)

XEN is not taken in charge but AVS (a version of KVM), Hyper-V and all supported versions of vSphere. (Possibly other hypervisors in the future)

Pros - vSAN is compatible with the most expensive equipment and only nutanix counterpart hardware.

Nutanix is available on multiple hardware platforms such as Supermicro, Dell and Lenovo.

WARNING: Used Nutanix but try to remain objective.

    The suite - no buttons.

As far as I understand it - there are a few problems with certificate.

So, help me with troubleshooting, please.

    Thank you.

Glad it worked! I managed to solve the rest of my problem get the plugin loaded as well.  Layout rhttpproxy.cert solved the problem with health-tr/min-post-install completed successfully.  But after you start the vmware-vsan-health service, health in the web client page loaded yet never buttons such as 'enable '.

I checked /var/log/vmware/vsan-health/vmware-vsan-health-service.log and noticed it was spamming 'Could not open a session in VC, retry in 10 seconds' over and over again.  So I went digging in the python source in /usr/lib/vmware-vpx/vsan-health. I managed to understand that when you start the web service that hosts the plugin, it tries to connect to vCenter using own vCenter SSL certificate and the private key (rui.crt and rui.key) in/etc/vmware-vpx/ssl. On my VCSA, the permissions of that file looked like this:

    myvcsa: / etc/vmware-vpx/ssl # ls - la

    Total 28

    drwxr-x - 2 root cis 4096 Jul 20 05:00.

    drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 21 Jul 04:05...

    -rw - 1 root root 3416 Apr 30 05:36 rui.crt

    -rw - 1 root root 1704 Apr 30 05:36 rui.key

    -rw - 1 root root 65 30 Apr 05:19 symkey.dat

    -rw - 1 root root 3343 Apr 30 05:36 vcsoluser.crt

    -rw - 1 root root 1704 Apr 30 05:36 vcsoluser.key

Now, I knew that the health service was run as a local user called vsan-health. It so there's no way that he would be able to read these files.  Fortunately, I had a mostly vanilla VCSA I could compare with.  Here's what looked like the VCSA vanilla folder:

    myvcsa: / etc/vmware-vpx/ssl # ls - la

    Total 28

    drwxr-x - 2 root cis 4096 Jul 20 05:00.

    drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 Jul 21 04:24...

    -rw - r - 1 root cis 3416 Apr 30 05:36 rui.crt

    -rw - r - 1 root cis 1704 Apr 30 05:36 rui.key

    -rw - 1 root root 65 30 Apr 05:19 symkey.dat

    -rw - r - 1 root cis 3343 Apr 30 05:36 vcsoluser.crt

    -rw - r - 1 root cis 1704 Apr 30 05:36 vcsoluser.key

Notice the difference of the Group property on the associated files cert and change of 600 to 640 permissions.  When I saw that, I have also remembered seeing in the vsan firstboot script that the vsan-health user was added to the cis group.  As soon as I did my broken VCSA permissions corresponds to vanilla, the service has started and all this work began.  I guess the reason that my permissions were leech is a bug with the replacement of SSL scripts.  One of the first things I do on my vCenter is updating the SSL certificates with those customized PKI infrastructure.  I guess that process currently does not work quite right and live the permissions on files that is not replaced.

  • On Nutanix from VMware on blades VMware

    Hi all

Customer asked to understand the deployment strategy and the benefits of VMware on Nutanix deployment and the deployment of VMware on blades? Just wondering if someone have document or guide to compare the two please?

Any information or help will be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Hello

WARNING: I am a father Solutions & Performance Engineer at Nutanix

The only real similarity between Nutanix and blade of deployments is they are considered as solutions, space-saving, but this is really where the similarities end.

VMware on blades is a Compute solution, which requires some form of shared such as a SAN or NAS storage to be connected via FC or IP connectivity.

However, Nutanix is a Hyper-convergent platform, which includes the calculation and storage in a 2RU format.

    Nutanix is actually a data center in a box that provides computing/storage resources, but also a fully integrated management platform. Deployment of Nutanix is very simple and takes<30mins from="" factory="" default="" to="" running="" vsphere="" and="" vms="" in="" an="" optimal="" storage="">

Blades with VMware (storage more) could take several days or weeks to be implemented after a design phase potentially complex.

Nutanix has all the features you would expect from a SAN/NAS like Compression, deduplication, Thin Provisioning, snapshot backup/replication, even in charge of Clusters stretched that we call the availability of Metro on.

Here is a report from an independent consulting firm by comparing a blade solution based on Cisco UCS (vBlock which includes SAN storage) at Nutanix.

If you can advise what use can is scheduled for, I can give you more details, if not, visit our Web site that contains many guides to best practices at http://www.nutanix.com/resources

  • VMware EVO Rail includes VSAN? Is it a new license model

There is a new forum for discussion of vmware for Evo rail. EVo Rail includes VSAN.

    https://communities.VMware.com/community/VMTN/evorail

Is this a new licensing model, when the licence is purchased new?

The graphical interface is different from the existing?

    An EVO unit comes with:

    • 8 licenses: company vSphere 5.5 +.
    • vCenter Server
    • 8 license: Virtual SAN
    • Overview journal under license for all components
    • 3ans of SNS

I hope this helps. Note that there is a camera model, if HW + SW + Maintenance/Support.

  • If VMware a procedure that how to reinstall vSAN node server?

    Hi all

When I test my vSAN and the view, I think a question that if a node appear to a problem or accident, if I could directly re - install on this server or need for a procedure to clear existing folder or setting before re - install ESXi again?

    Thank you!!

I try live re - install ESXi that replace OS disk, and it seems he still find the old VSAN parameter and try installation during the initial priming (at this time, I still not put in this server's IP)

    wyldkao

There is no need to delete existing records. If for any reason, the host is dead beyond answer I recommend that you run the installer, as if it were an upgrade process. When you then add the host in your cluster to vCenter again it comes back with the same identity and VSAN should re-sync.

If you prefer to do things differently, then you can always start your host with something like "gparted" first and just wipe all disks.

  • VMkernel for VSANs

    Hello

I have a question about Vsan

1 can. 1 vcenter cause 2 vsan cluster? Each vsan cluster will have its own separate cluster by cluster (in VMware vCenter).

    2. for clusters VSAN, they will use same physical switch uplink. How can we separate these clusters? Is - this same correct range of IP addresses with the same multicast address? or we have to separate the IP address range and the multicast address?

    I use vSAN 6.2.

    Thank you.

Hi, to comment further on your second question, if you have multiple clusters VSAN, best practices is to provide these more separate network segments (say, different VLAN). I'm not sure what you mean by "same multicast address"; each VSAN node performs the multicast, so all vmkernels VSAN are multicast addresses.

For more help with this kind of considerations, please consult the Virtual SAN 6.2 Networking Design Guide.

  • Mix of hybrid and all-flash disk in the same vsan group groups

What I believe "groups of hybrid mix discs and All-Flash is not a good practice" because we cannot control the vm to the location of data means data should go in such or such group of disks is not possible. So a question that I received from my client, it is why not vmware offers two different stores data creating a vsan cluster - a vsan datastore (hybrid) and another vsan data store (All-Flash). I felt that the customer's requirement is authentic as well. Correct me if I'm wrong. Looking for suggestions of experts vsan.

    1. it is not supported 2. It is not possible with the product today 3. Complicates the operational aspects (monitoring of disk space, balancing items, etc.), that's why VMware has not introduced this 4. Flash is about to become cheaper than the disk, why bother... Thank you

If you have a local contact to VMware, they can share roadmap with you if necessary under the NDA.

Hi, in vSAN 5.5, it is difficult to identify the exact physical drive (in vSAN 5.5) which is part of a group of disks vSAN. In ESXi 6.x, the HARD drive is flashing option (health status plugin) solve this.

order "esxcli storage base path list" provides adapter, channel, target, and LUN details. For example, if a specific drive is vmhba0:C0:T3:L0, means that the physical disk is on the 3rd HDD slot?
