VMware Vsphere and DELL VRTX!

Hello

I have a Dell VRTX with Poweredge M520 2

I want to know what version of Esxi is supported on my VRTX!

I heard that Esxi 5.1 is supported and with 5.5 you can do, but you may encounter some problems with the storage

Thank you!

Just look for the appropriate search systems/server keyword.

The Dell PE M520 is supported with ESXi 5.5 and 6.0 as well:

See details here (the drop down menu includes all supported versions of ESXi):

  • with vSphere and Dell MD3000i iSCSI design

I installed a server ESX 4 (the first of three for this cluster), and a SAN Dell MD3000i iSCSI connected through two switches Dell PowerConnect 2816.

Now I read the VMware 'iSCSI SAN configuration guide', and I wanted to just make sure I did the design correcly.

I have connected a Teddy ESX (vmnic1) to one of the pSwitch and another (vmnic5) in the second. This pSwitch SAN iSCSI ports are connected, so that one of the switches carry the 10.10.10.x subnet and the other the 10.10.11.x (see IP plan below)

The two natachasery have a vSwitch each (a do not share), a portgroup each and are configured on different subnets, IP (see attached screenshot)

    Plan of intellectual property:

    Port iSCSI-10 group (VMkernel): 10.10.10.1

    Port group iSCSI-11 (VMkernel): 10.10.11.1

    0-0 SAN controller: 10.10.10.10

    SAN 0-1 controller: 10.10.11.10

    Controller 1-0 San: 10.10.10.11

    SAN 1-1 controller: 10.10.11.11

By using this configuration, I could see four different paths for each LUN. and I was able to make the ESX Server will switch to different switches/controllers as I unplug the vmnic1 network cables and vmnic5, one at a time.

Then I found the section on 'esxcli' configuration guide and multipathing configuration, which I carried out in accordance with the instructions ("esxcli swiscsi nic add - n vmk0 d vmhba34" and "esxcli swiscsi nic add - n vmk1 vmhba34 d ')

Now I have eight different paths for each logic unit number, three of whom are 'Active' and an 'active (i/o)' (see my screen attached the capture).

    So, my questions are:

    1. the eight paths to each LUN really normal in designs of iSCSI?

    2. is my vSwitch/Teddy/pSwitch correct design choices?

    Thanks in advance!

    / Anders

    @hennish,

As long as your new design continues to meet your needs of failover and workload, your infrastructure design should be fine.

But you might want to take a look at this design Dell. In particular, step 12 that configures multiple paths in round-robin policy using the VI GUI client, for

Each LUN exposed to the ESX Server. This allows balancing on two

Active paths to the LUN. After completing this step, you should see2 "IO Active" paths.

  • new to vmware, vsphere and networking vswitch

    Hi all

I am new to virtualization, but decided to try it since my company is going full on ESXI5.5.  That is why I hope that some kind gurus here can point me in the right direction regarding some doubts I have... and do not forgive me if I ask ridiculous questions...

    ==========

So far, I know that VMs, through their vNIC connect to vSwitch which is in turn connected to the physical machine or the host ESXI (vmnic) network card. The vmnic is then connected to a real L2/L3 switch.

[VM Vnic] <>- [vswitch] <>- [vmnic] <>- [physical switch]

However, what I don't understand is how the vmnic actually works to spread the traffic "inward" to the vswitch? I can't really come up with one question to explain my doubt, but below are the doubts that I asked myself->

    • How is he able to assign the IP off the internal virtual machines?
    • When an outer package of the physical switch is being sent to the vmnic how he spend in-house for internal virtual computers?
    • How even knows designated IP belong to a virtual machine inside and "inward" to happen to the vswitch?
    • Is the vmnic using address IP or MAC to decide if it means putting the package inside the switch?
    • When an arp request for a virtual machine IP is send from the outside, the vmnic will reply with its mac address?
    • When an arp request is sent from an internal virtual machine, the vmnic keep track of the mac address of the virtual machine so that next time, when he saw a response to this MAC, he knows inside 'before' the vSwitch
    • What is this work something like a 'bridge' mode fill the vswitch internal to the external physical switch? Is there a table of addresses belonging to the vmnic mac?
    • Whenever the IP of the virtual computer is assigned, the IP address will be "bind" to the vmnic?
    • How register us all IP or Mac addresses (if any) that are associated with a vmnic?

Or rather simply, I wonder how the physical network adapter on the host (esxi), knows that he must transfer a frame "inward" to the vswitch? is there a link OF the virtual machine to the interface? or nic was a table of addresses mac or something... (but the mac address table guess belong to vswitch?)

    Thank you.

    Kind regards

    Hello

    Welcome to the community!

I would like to start with a doc. I recommend you to read our VMware Virtual Networking Concepts guide that I hope will help you to better understand the basic details of the virtual in VMware switch, even if it's a bit old.

    On your last question, however:

    > Or rather simply put, I wonder how the physical network adapter on the host (esxi), knows that he must transfer a frame "inward" to the vswitch? is there an IP link from the virtual machine to the interface? or nic was a table of addresses mac or something... (but the mac address table supposed to belong to vswitch?)

The vminc (i.e. the physical card) on the ESXi host is not that there is a virtual switch behind it. It transfers the packets to the driver and then the top layer software it management. There is no magic to this topic. In some cases, there are a few added techniques (for example netqueue), but the basis remains the same. Vmnic (i.e. the physical NETWORK adapter card) does not keep the information of MAC address of the virtual machine on virtual machines, but does the vSwitch. But even the vSwitch does not retain details of the IP address.

A virtual switch, as such, doesn't have the same kind of as a physical switch mac address table. If a virtual machine under tension then the vSwitch stores the virtual port <->combination MAC address number and keeps it like that (so far it's really no different a physical switch). A big difference is that, well that the vSwitch does not learn the MAC addresses of the external network. If there is a picture of outside with the MAC address of unicast for which there is no port isn't linked then the packet gets dropped. And if the virtual machine sends traffic to another MAC that does not exist in the virtual switch and then it will be sent out via the uplink (s) (if it exists).

The MAC address of the vmnic does not play here (unless one of the vmkernel interface pulls his MAC to an adapter of uplink).

I hope this helps. Let me know if you still have any questions.

How to get the reference id mo cluster assigned on vsphere level using the vcloud API.

What you see VCD is the ID of the Resource Pool MoRef 'root', not the current Cluster MoRef ID, the ID is different.

If you take a look the vSphere API http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.wssdk.apiref.doc_50%2Fvim.ComputeResource.html, you will see clearly that a ComputeResource (Cluster) contains a property of "resourcePool" that makes reference to the resourcePool 'root' of a cluster. • VMware vsphere essentials more and Dell MD3000i iSCSI - virtual disk not on preferred path

    Hello world

I am trying to set up our new vmware vsphere essentials plus the facility. We have 2 x Dell R710 servers running vmware esx4 and have a md3000i SAN.

Each server has a network cable to connect to a network SAN controller.

    vmserver1 a vmnic6 IP 192.168.130.110 the IP controller connection 0 192.168.130.101

    vmserver1 has IP 192.168.130.111 vmnic4 connection to controller 1 IP 192.168.130.102

    vmserver2 a vmnic 6 IP 192.168.131.110 the IP controller connection 0 192.168.131.101

    vmserver2 has IP 192.168.131.111 vmnic4 connection to controller 1 IP 192.168.131.102

Whenever I start a virtual server it causes the dell md3000i start flashes orange, and management tool says disc not on favorite virtual path.

After entering the tool configuration and affecting the path preferred, from the commencement to vmware, even with a single connected server it causes the error.

I tried to configure vmware to use direct fixed and alternate paths.

I did a quick search on Google and found these sites:

    http://www.delltechcenter.com/page/VMware ESX4.0andPowerVault MD3000i

    http://en.community.Dell.com/support-forums/storage/f/1216/t/19269507.aspx

    Strange configuration.

Looks like you are using some cross cable?

Each host must have 2 vSwitches, each with a port vmkernel on one of the two iSCSI network.

Each host must reach all 4 of the MD3000i (test with the vmkping command) interface.

  • VMware HA with 2 x ESXi and Dell MD3000i?

    Hi all

I have a task at hand to set up with VMware HA.

    What I've done so far,

    (1) to this end, I have 2 identical Dell PE 2950 servers and Dell MD 3000i as storage device.

    (2) installed ESXi 4 in servers (ESXi1 and ESXi2) and configured the static IP.

    (3) I configured the iSCSI SAN (MD3000i) and created the host (VMHA) group.  Added the two hosts in the host group

    (4) virtual disk created, which will be shared by both hosts and it mapped to the host group.

I know how to install vCenter and how to create the HA cluster as well as adding guests inside.  But before that, I have a few questions.

According to the theory the shared storage must be accessible by the two hosts.  How can I add storage shared on SAN in the hosts.  I know that the navigation, but miss me the theory somewhere.  I added shared as Datastore2 and ESXi1 and formatted with VMFS3 storage.  Now how could I add the same storage shared in ESXi2?  When I tried to add, the steps asked me to format again shared storage that I can't do?

Thank you all for all the remedies fast

    Nadine

You analyze it again on the second (and subsequent).   Add the that storage is being used on the first host.

  • VMware Vsphere HA (problem of storage in common) and problem of band network bandwidth

    Hi all

I am setting up VMware VSphere HA on ESXI 6.0

I have 5 hosts running, each host has 2 management networks main network 1 vMotion and 1 network card for balancing with the management network. (each NIC 1Gbit uplink)

I also attached to each card a FC (Fiber Channel) connected to HP 3PAR storage.

each host have 1 TB or 2 TB Fiber Channel-attached storage.

When I was setting up the AP he stated that he did not have any shared how storage can I allow other hosts to see each store data as a shared storage. NB: when I go vsphere client to web I see all the storage of each host.

I also want to allow FT on a virtual machine, I have also a problem of bandwidth insuffisent or something. .

also, I enabled fault tolerance on each NIC attached to the host.

also another question: should I export volumes (LUNS) to all hosts in the AP? (in fact I exported each volume to each host separately) for example:

    Volume 1: HP3PAR_ESX1 exported to HOST ESX1

Volume 2: HP3PAR_ESX2 exported to the ESX2 HOST

    Volume 3: HP3PAR_ESX3 exported to ESX3 HOST

    .. .etc

can you me clear on this issue or guide me to where I can solve these problems please.

When I try to activate the FT on the VM I the following warning attached

This message was edited by: coolirc attached image FT problem

There are memory FT requirements compatible VM is through two virtual, primary and secondary computers. so it will consume the same amount of resources of both ESXi hosts.

VM with 10 GB of RAM allocation, turn on FT booking VM is now 10 GB RAM, so 10 GB + VMkernel consumption General host running primary VM and same amount of the host that is running with secondary VM. on top of this admission control in support of the failures of host we are going to tolerate so say primary VM host fails, then secondary VM becomes the new primary and triggers a new high school to be created and powered in one of the other host survivor in your HA cluster but which will be successful only when you have sufficient resources available to satisfy a reservation.

your source host has 16 GB of RAM and one of the destination host also got 16 GB of RAM, so if you try to activate pi after disabling admission control on your cluster policy, I think that it should allow you to activate FT without errors. [if it still does not work so if possible, turn off all other virtual machines for free resources or to try to reduce their reservation manually if they are running with a reservation and try again.]

with admission control, the necessary resources would be even higher.

screenshot of Cluster summary reports that you have 4 guests in it and the memory resources available about 30 GB to 60 GB total memory. But isn't always the right figure, if you go to the monitor-> book resources, is where you will find actual "ready reserve", it's the right amount of reserve memory that you will be able to use across several virtual machines, you run in your cluster.

I tried 2 vCPU vm FT in vSphere 6, works very well, but never tried with Hardware version 8, in your case, your virtual machine is hardware version 8, although I'm not sure if it is mandatory to have the hardware version 11 VM for FT so ideally it should work, but virtual hardware version if possible vm upgraded to 11.

    Hi all

Need some advice, as I am preparing to take the exam of the VCAP-DCA 5.5 in April.

    Thank you all very much.

Personally, I think that if you have below you don't take it out not before, then follow the course (unless you miss the VCP and the requirement of course)

1 watch the video of Pluralsight VCP and VCAP

2 buy the VCAP-DCA-5 study study guide bonus ebook on the VMware press - practical site reviews includes in the book

    3. go on the official and unofficial study guide CLI guide study

    4. do you have a host laboratory and practice and practice and make sure you only go on all the (MOST important) action plan.

    Enjoy autolab

    5. If you really need to take the course... you can do the lab connect version of the course which is $ 300 to $ 500.

If the course if the company paid for the course, and he is not from your Pocket then of course the course.  But your hard-earned income is better spend in

buy yourself gear lab, subscription VMUG and VMware books.

  • VMware vSphere: install, configure, manage [V5.1] correct review and practice test

    Dear all,

Here, I'm a bit confused so I need help to clarify which exam I have to take and what is the matter with this review. I took the course VMware vSphere: install, configure, manage [V5.1] and when I tried to register for the exam, he gave me the review "VCPD510: VMware Certified Professional-Desktop ' and when I tried to find some documents to study, I found two different materials, which relates to the VCP5-DT, which is all about VMware View: install, configure, manage [V5.x] and the other which is VCP - 510. While we should I study.

    Help, please.

    Hi mariusme,

The review, you have to take is VCP5-VTC. VCPD510 is for desktop, which is entirely different. Please go to the vmware certification page and select VCP5-DCV(vmware certified professional in datacenter virtualization) and you will find the action plan. You can follow it, and since you've followed the required courses, you will be eligible to take the certification. And also sign up for VTC - VCP on Vmware Portal before you book review on PearsonVUE.
