VMWare Workstation EFI firmware

Hi all!

I worked with firmware UEFI of VmWare Workstation and debugger GDB IDA heel. I recently did an analysis of Windows 8 UEFI (available here: http://www.itsec.it/2012/09/18/uefi-technology-say-hello-to-the-windows-8-bootkit/).

Now, I want to open an investigation into Secureboot. I can only use a physical machine (ASUS). I was wondering if anyone knows how to insert Secureboot module (module SecurityPkg in the EDK 2.3.1 specs) in the VmWare EFI firmware...

I always tried to compile UEDK 2010 "firmware.fv" and import it into a file descriptor "vmx" adding the following lines:

Firmware = "efi".
efi64. FileName = "myEfiFv.rom".

.. .but the virtual machine does not start. I figured out that VMWare image of uefi firmware is different from the standard (the 2 files being compared is equal to only in the structure of EFI_FIRMWARE_VOLUME_HEADER).

Some of you know how to change the EFI firmware in order to support Mrs SecureBoot?

Thank you very much in advance...

Kind regards

Andrea

Hello Andrea,

You always take the party projects!

There is no currently released VMware products that support for Secure Boot UEFI.  We do not include SecurityPkg, and our implementation of Services Variable takes charge neither EFI_VARIABLE_AUTHENTICATED_WRITE_ACCESS nor EFI_VARIABLE_TIME_BASED_AUTHENTICATED_WRITE_ACCESS.  Our release plans are confidential, so I can't tell when you will see a version that does not include support for Secure Boot.

It will be a huge task if you want to build your own firmware EFI [U] run in a VMware virtual machine: Our EFI ROM images contain an amount of platform-specific code that is not included in the CDIP/UDK accessible you need to reproduce in order to have Roma who started all the basis of VMware codes.

Sorry, it does not help much with your project.

See you soon,.

    Log file is attached below.

An update of the firmware could certainly help.  After you install the update of the firmware, it can be useful following the instructions from the motherboard to reset the firmware configuration by default (if its configuration is not too heavily customized) and then reconfigure with custom settings, you might need.  Check that you have disabled in your TXT firmware settings too... who's going to stop us from using the capabilities of VT - x from the host.  And, where there is doubt, the error message is not really pleasant on cyclical food... Some systems cannot put a change of configuration of VT - x into force without being truly disconnected from power for a while, so if in case of doubt, he put it off and remove the power outlet for a few seconds.

Your CPU is certainly capable of VT - x and support all the VT - x features required by VMware Workstation... Simply to force the system to allowing the use of VT - x and then it should start to work well.

  • How can I create a simple VM using the EFI firmware?

I created a VM with OS 'Another 64 - bit' and edited the .vmx file, change only the "bios" = firmware firmware = "efi".

Whenever I start the virtual machine, it uses the BIOS instead of the EFI. I can see when to start directly to the firmware, or by starting with a 8.1 Windows Installer disk and installing Windows checking connects immediately after that it started ("" detected boot environment: legacy ' ").

How create/configure a virtual machine to use systematically the EFI, without her 'crush' or 'back' to my configuration?

    I use VMware Fusion 7.1.0 (2314774).

    Hi michielvoo

Welcome to the VMware communities forum.

I wrote an article on the use of EFI in a machine virtual here: Boot via the EFI firmware | PlanetVM

Basically, what you're doing are correct. The part, I wonder about is if the double quote characters you use double quotes a normal and not the "fantasies" (as you can see in the above article, these are those fancy)

It takes standard double quotes on your keyboard.

Another possible reason to make it work is not is if you edit the vmx while your merger still works as he could return your changes to protect the virtual machine.

If you don't know everything that's wrong with your vmx file, then send the vmware.log file is also in this folder to an answer here and I or someone else will take a look and see if everything's okay what is wrong.

  • VMware Workstation 10 bug: DVD SATA drive does not start if we disable the floppy drive in the VMware BIOS

    Hello

I use VMware Workstation 10, and I found a bug:

With the all-new virtual machine (for example with Windows 8 x 64), if I choose a hard SATA and SATA DVD drive in VMware and I have to disable the floppy drive in the VMware BIOS, Windows 8 (or Windows 7) ISO does not start.

If I come back in the BIOS to enable the floppy drive once again, my ISO boot.

If I use the DVD IDE drive in VMware options, no problem if I disable the floppy drive.

    With "EFI mode", no bugs.

Please, can you solve this problem? Thank you

  • Impossible to run/load 64 - bit OS in VMware Workstation 8

I recently bought VMware Workstation 8.  It is installed on a laptop Lenovo T510 with 8 gigabytes of memory, Intel Virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.  I am running Windows 7 64-bit with all the service packs and hotfixes installed from this announcement on March 13, 2012.  My processor is a Mobile Core i7 620 m.

I'm trying to load a 64-bit operating system, I'm able to succeed in creating the virtual machine.  However when I try to load the 64-bit operating system, I get the following message is displayed:

Virtualization host is disabled in the BIOS/Firmware of host.

With the help of virtualization with MMU software software.

The above message is incorrect; I have virtualization enabled in BIOS.   I checked several times.

Also, I get a window appears that displays the following text:

Software virtualization is incompatible with the long mode on this platform.  Long mode off.  Without the support of the long mode, the virtual machine will not be able to run 64-bit code.  For more details, see: http://vmware.com/info?id=152.

Please help me with this problem.

    Thank you

    Lou

I have the same problem with VMware Workstation 8 and I tried the method of vMLH thus, still encounter the same error message (I created a new guest OS and made all settings before starting from 1).

  • Cannot open ESXi 4.1 in VMware Workstation 7.1

I installed ESXi 4.1 in VMware Workstation 7.1 several days ago, and it worked fine.

But I can't open ESXi 4.1 now. I need someone to help me solve this problem.

    The error message is:

«You have configured the virtual machine to use an operating system 64-bit client.»  However, the 64-bit mode is not possible. This host is VT-capable but VT is disabled.

It's usually because that VT has been disabled in the BIOS/firmware settings or host was not powered by bicycle since changing this setting. Please:

    (1) check that the BIOS/firmware settings enable VT and disable "trust execution."

2 turn on the host, if one of these BIOS/firmware settings have been changed.

    (3) turn on the host if you have not done since the installation of VMware Workstation.

    (4) update of the BIOS/firmware from the host to the latest version. »

I do not change the bios setting after the installation of ESXi. And I just checked the bios, it shows that VT is enabled.

So I don't know what the problem is.

PS: My laptop is HP 8540w, the processor is intel i5.

VMware - 0.log shows that VT - x is disabled on this system:

    18:20:07.257 Sept 14: vmx | CPU [0]: MSR 0X3A = 0X1

    18:20:07.257 Sept 14: vmx | CPU [1]: MSR 0X3A = 0X1

    18:20:07.257 Sept 14: vmx | [2] CPU: MSR 0X3A = 0X1

    18:20:07.257 Sept 14: vmx | CPU [3]: MSR 0X3A = 0X1

Bit 0 of this MSR is the bit lock, preventing further amendments to this MSR without a power cycle.  Bit 2 is the bit to enable VT - x, and that the ILO is disabled.  The value that you want for this MSR is 0x5.

You have hibernated the system since you were last able to use VT - x?  You can have a buggy BIOS that fails to enable VT - x, then wake up from hibernation.  I check the BIOS settings and then turn on the machine to see if you return enablement VT - x. After a power cycle.

  • Re: Satellite keyboard Funtions vs. VmWare Workstation

    Hello

    I'm new to this forum...
    I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite U500-115.
After you install all the programs I need, I noticed that the eco and the start/stop button lights buttons didn t work anymore.

I uninstalled programs Toshiba - nothing works. So I installed win 7 pro x 64 again.
    Buttons worked!!

I discovered that vmware workstation 6 and 7 are at the origin of this problem.
As soon as I install the vmworkstation software the keys won´t work.
    Uninstall--> buttons work.
I don't want to use both: buttons and vmware 6 or 7.
It seems to work with vmware 5.x, but this version of vmware is officially not recommended to work with win7. It takes about 10 minutes push button vmware initially until the vm ware starts booting.

Perhaps someone could confirm this problem.
    Hope of a quick solution!
    Concerning
    bachmayeah

Maybe it sounds pessimistic now, but I don't think you'll have a quick solution to this.
The feature tools and utilities Toshiba is tested with the own operating system preinstalled and not with some third-party additional party software.
Can you imagine how these applications you will find there? Who should test the functionality with hundreds of other application? It is certainly not possible.

I use VmWare, but I imagine that there is a problem where two applications met the other.

Sorry, but I don't think that there is nothing you can do about it.

  • Toshiba button Support do not work with VMware Workstation

    Hi all

for all people having the same problem - * Support Button Toshiba do not work after the installation of VMware Workstation.*

    Short solution:
After the installation of vmware workstation 6.x or 7 - the default setting is "Disable Autorun on the host". (you can find it in: Edit-> preferences-> devices). Release the hook and restart. After the reboot, the buttons should be working.

    The long version:
Support Button Toshiba uses the Windows function "MobilePC" - > "Hotstart". HotStart only works when the autostart feature is not disabled (the value of registry key: + HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Po licies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun + has the value 0xFF). VMware is the default to disable Autorun of CD/DVD. Turn on the autorun, restart the Qosmio and Hotstart (and also Toshiba button support) works very well. That's the problem.

    Thomas Wermuth

    Thanks for the solution. :)

  • K6V69AV #ABA: HP Desktop 500-520qe: cannot install VMWare Workstation

I try to install the virtual machine using vmware workstation or vmware player.  But it gives me the message saying Intel vt - x is not enabled. I've seen a few videos youtube that says that I need to enable virtualization, but I don't seem to have seen.  Can anyone suggest if there is something else?

    Hello

Open the command run and enter: MSINFO32

The returned information will tell you if virtualization is enabled.  If this isn't the case, then you need to make a change in the BIOS to turn on VT is defined by default to disable.  See the image below.

  • Stuck ImageAssist - VMWare Workstation 12

    Hello world

I'm having a problem where ImageAssist is blocked indefinitely at a point whenever I run it. I try to capture a Windows OEM 10 image created using VMWare Workstation 12. This post describes the exact steps I took:

ImageAssist crashes and then to 32 of the stages of this process, as shown in the screenshot below:

I actually left ImageAssist running overnight, and it never progressed beyond that point. The virtual hard disk is certainly big enough (60 GB) and I had no problems with the image at all. I even started from scratch and re-created the entire image to test again and ImageAssist still crashes at this exact point.

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello

Windows 10 does a lot of things during a "Windows Update". Running it in a virtual machine is a good idea as not getting driver updates. There are a few more things that occur that cause problems. The reason ImageAssist fails generally after an update is because the system can no longer be Sysprep. To check that you can browse manually to sysprep. C:\windows\System32\sysprep and run the executable. If sysprep fails, the AI tool will also fail. The biggest culprit is when the OS is upgraded. Windows 10 will upgrade to the latest version which won't allow sysprep run. Microsoft tells us that "Redstone" will not have this problem. You should also know that the 'Crush Saga of Candy' and 'Twitter' can install, causing sysprep to no longer work. I hope this helps... TK

Someone had problems with VMWare Workstation running Windows 7 64 bit? My computer hangs when creating the virtual machine guests. I also have VirtualBox running very stable with Windows 7.
