VMX file now on my desk

I installed 3 merger on MacBook Pro, then installed Windows 7. Had problems with Internet connectivity, so followed the instructions of prior discussion that says to change the file Windoes.VMX to insert a few lines defining the Ethernet settings, I did. But before I did the editing, I saved a copy of this file on the Windows desktop. After you change the original in the file system, I rebooted and VM asked if I had copied or moved this file. I chose proposed, what I knew was probably a mistake just after checking. Windows opened and ran and my Internet connection has been created, BUT there are now a half-dozen or more VMX, VMXF, etc. of the files on my Windows desktop, I put them in the trash, so then Windows will not open. I have them leave the basket and placed on the desktop and Windows went very well. What I need to know is: How do I re-point these files to their locatoion of file system native to get them off my desktop?

VMware Fusion of uninstalling/reinstalling does not remove Virtual Machines, or he will correct this problem.

The file ' vm-10-09 - 10.3077.tgz "is not fixed and all that shows in your last response it is the full qualified path" / Users/Larry/Desktop/vm-10-09-10.3077.tgz "which of course I cannot see what I see advising how to solve this problem.

I could write a paragraph or two saying... If it do, etc, etc... but to be honest, I don't want to waste my time when to have the absolute technical facts of the situation, I measure it to give explicit and specific responses and Support to collect information provides that without me having to ask a bunch of questions that some of them usually end up having to be still explain to the user.

The key here is the Virtual Machine files on your desktop do not belong here and are not in a Package as normal file according to Virtual Machines created by VMware Fusion and at this stage the following is only conjecture...

I think you made a copy of the configuration the target Virtual Machine's .vmx file on your desktop and then no matter what you've done I think you're done by executing the .vmx file on the desktop and then received a message saying box...

"File not found: Windows XP Home Edition.vmdk this file is necessary to power on this virtual machine."  If this file has been moved, please provide its new location. »

... and then you clicked the Browse button, and sailed to and select the file "Windows XP Home Edition.vmdk" and then received a message saying box...

"This virtual machine may have been moved or copied. In order to configure certain management and networking features, VMware Fusion needs to know if you move this virtual machine, or if you copied it. If you are unsure, answer "I copied it". »

... to which you answered "I moved it" and you have now two entries 'Windows XP Home Edition' on the Virtual Machine library.  One of them is the original and actual VM and the other which is just the configuration file .vmx on the desktop with the other files that are normally created to take in charge of the Virtual Machine.

If what I've said is true, then you should be able to delete the second entry of the Virtual Machine in the Virtual Machine library and its associated files and done with it, leaving the original intact but that's why I support Information in order to review the .log files and .plist to merge file and then have the information to make an informed decision as if I was sitting in the front of the machine and could see for myself what were the technical facts of the situation.

So if the conjecture is true, then the solution should be obvious and easy to solve.

  • Edited the .vmx and now Server watch unknown (invalid file)

    I tried modifying the .vmx file to correct the mistakes of some .vmx and I saved the original file. I tried to restart with the new and had an error. I then tried to replace the with the original and in VSPhere client .vmx file, but show as unknown (invalid). I can't change settings or try to start upward. How can I fix my server?

  • .vmx file did not move after svmotion

    Hello

    I've been svmotion'ing a MSCS VM with RDM today (the RDM migrated separately from the side SAN) and after the migration, I figured out that the virtual machine installs with only the vmdk files. .Vmx files, log files, and other necessary files have been left out in the source data store. I moved two or three other virtual machines with RDM a similar setup and they moved very well. The only difference was this virtual machine is, he had an ISO mounted and connected. Would it have caused a problem?

    How move the .vmx and other files now? The must close the virtual machine and move the files manually using browser data store?

    Rahul-

    That's my understanding of it, if you run 5.X, you can migrate online and use the advanced option.

    But here's another good article migration RDM and a question for users of RDM. | VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs this article goes into details migration scenarios and outcomes that result.

    It is simple process, as you have done with other virtual machines, just make sure that nothing is attached to the virtual machine, although this should not affect svmotion.  Start with the svmotion to datasore another standard, if the configuration files are still not migrated, then use the Advanced setting to verify the migration of the configuration files , simply use the advanced option.

  • Need to remove the advanced values in VMX file

    Former Director elected to harden all VMs VMX files in order to avoid interruptions in service unwanted individuals manual installation of the VMware tools upgrades.

    I agree with him and understand in previous versions, it was a good idea to disable these but now with 5.1 with the fact that we have more to restart for the modernization of the tools happen my life has become much more complicated and we constantly have problems with VM with mounted tools and no way forced to disassemble the tools.

    I am looking for PowerCLI script to remove these advanced values in the VMX file for all the virtual machines attached to a vCenter. I guess these are the following values:

    isolation.tools.autoInstall.disable = true

    isolation.tools.guestInitiatedUpgrade.disable = false

    insulation. Tools.connectable.Disable =true

    If there are other values that I should check, please let me know and I will review the VMX file.

    This is another option, but lines will remain in the VMX, albeit with different values

    You can do it with this script

    $vm = Get-VM -Name MyVM

    $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineConfigSpec$spec.tools = New-Object VMware.Vim.ToolsConfigInfo

    $extra1 = New-Object VMware.Vim.OptionValue$extra1.Key = "isolation.tools.autoInstall.disable"$extra1.Value = "false"$spec.ExtraConfig += $extra1$extra2 = New-Object VMware.Vim.OptionValue$extra2.Key = "isolation.tools.guestInitiatedUpgrade.disable"$extra2.Value = "true"$spec.ExtraConfig += $extra2$extra3 = New-Object VMware.Vim.OptionValue$extra3.Key = "isolation.tools.connectable.disable"$extra3.Value = "flase"$spec.ExtraConfig += $extra3

    $vm.ExtensionData.ReconfigVM($spec)

  • Odd listing with .vmx file

    I dip a few virtual machines, and I have a script I found online (don't remember who it was, but probably LucD).  The script is not the issue, but the csv file that references the script has some of these lines:

    floppy0. Now, FALSE

    ide0:0. Now, FALSE

    logging, TRUE

    Well, the script seems to work very well, but then when I check the file .vmx avec.extensiondata.config.extraconfig (Get - VM "Name"), the _.key $ for any line that has to do with the virtual material does not appear.  I don't think it's really a problem of script, but this section is so active, that maybe someone can lead me in the right direction, and I used PowerCLI for the settings, so I guess it's relevant.  There are several lines, and everything looks fine except for the material of the lines:

    floppy0. Now, FALSE

    floppy1. Now, FALSE

    ide0:0. Now, FALSE

    ide0:1.present, FALSE

    IDE1:0. Now, FALSE

    IDE1:1.present, FALSE

    parallel0. Now, FALSE

    Serial0.present, FALSE

    Other lines appear when I get back them:

    insulation. Monitor.Control.Disable, true

    insulation. Tools.ghi.AutoLogon.Disable, true

    insulation. BIOS. BBS. Disable, true

    isolation.tools.getCreds.disable, TRUE

    Even if I 'change settings' > Options > advanced. General > Configuration settings and add a line, I can't retrieve it with powershell (only the material lines) if I directly edit the .vmx file and backup copy, these lines do not arise with powershell, but they will appear if I look at the file .vmx Windows with Scripture, or any other text editor.

    If anyone has experienced this?  More important, nobody knows what I'm doing wrong?

    The script is here and there is a CSV file that I use with the examples I listed, he has the key, columns of values correctly

    Line of #This matter the pair key / value for the parameter .vmx

    $import = import-Csv "C:\STIGapply\STIG_current.csv".

    $VMs = get-back STIG | ' Get - VM"* clone.

    $vmConfigSpec = new-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineConfigSpec

    {Foreach ($item in $import)

    $extra = new-Object VMware.Vim.OptionValue

    $extra. Key = $item. Key

    $extra. Value = $item. Value

    $vmConfigSpec.extraconfig += $extra

    }

    {Foreach ($vm to $vms)

    $vm. ExtensionData.ReconfigVM ($vmConfigSpec)

    }

    In ExtraConfig , you will see only the VMX lines that do not have an actual entry in the VirtualMachine object.

    In the case of these systems can be found in $vm. ExtensionData.Config.Hardware.Device.

  • Why made a small mistake on a VMX file such a pain?

    It is more a question for the developers and maybe the experts.  But why, when you make a small mistake when you change a VMX file, uploading it to the location of theVM data store, it backs up, starting then kicked with an error that gives an error stack then causes the virtual machine to do this:

    esxi.png

    It seems stupid.  If I can reup the VMX corrected, you still cannot recover.  There should be some sort of refresh button, so it scans the directory and the VMX still once, realize the mistake has been corrected and then giving access to the virtual machine again.

    Only one I found today to fix this, is to click with the right button on the invalid VM in the inventory list, remove the inventory.  Go to the data store and the record of the location of the virtual machine.  Right-click on the corrected VMX file and say "Add to inventory" and follow the instructions in the wizard.

    Why that is so long winded?  What is the problem with my original suggestion to just a refresh button.  Who will be rescan him previously failed VMX file, then find there now and allowing access to the power on the virtual machine again.

    Seems strange.

    Two error put today

    isolation.tools.guestInitiatedUpgrade.disable = "FALSE".

    In the VMX file twice.

    Then second mistake (in order to correct the error, just so that I could make a guide for fixing work) was forget to replace the quotes "when they are copied from a Web site, it uses different stylized quotes that don't like VMware.

    Tiny errors, but how long breath to get the virtual dos machine.

    Why not just use the vSphere Client to make these. VMX changes. Property editor of virtual machine-> tab Options-> general in the left pane-> button Configuration settings. Add the values y and no more manual. VMX edits.

  • Add .vmx files for inventory

    Hi all

    We have a situation where we try to automate the contribution of virtual machines on our site of DR. Right now we simulate this by using a separate VMFS data store. We use a SAN NetApp reflecting a copy of this course for the DR Datacentre, remove us the mirror, and then mount the VMFS datastore. But what we find is that in the data store, the file needs to be renamed before that we can add vmx to the other site, maybe it's because it still exists in the environment "under tension"? I'm not sure.

    So, what I want to achieve is to have a script that I can specify the data store, cluster and perhaps the resource group, and he gets all the vmx files into this data store. I've seen an excellent script by LucD (attached) which looks perfect but when I run it it does not seem to do anything, but produces also no errors, I think it has something to do with the way in which it is to find the location of the data store, but I'm not sure about this at all.

    I hope that makes sense.

  • Using several data stores, cannot migrate the vmx file in a data store

    I am host migration between 3.5 and 4.0, and part of the migration requires me to vmotion data to a single shared LUN data warehouses.  From there on, I import the virtual machine in 4.0 and using the script to migrate the two VM disks at different stores of data below.  The problem I have is that the configuration (vmx) file not migrated and is left on the shared storage LUNS.  Anyone knows how to go beyond this?

    The Script:

    $VMDisk = 'disk 1 '.

    $VMName = 'TestVM '.

    $TargetDS = get-Datastore - VMHost (Get-VMHost-$S.id Id) | Where-Object {$_.} Name - like "PMV"} | "" FreeSpaceMB tri-objet-descending | SELECT name - first of all 1

    $vm = get-View - ViewType VirtualMachine-filter @{"Name" = $VMName}

    $diskspec = new-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpecDiskLocator

    $diskspec. Data store = (Get-Datastore-name $TargetDS.Name |) Get - View). MoRef

    $diskspec.diskId = $diskId

    $spec. Disk = @($diskspec)

    $task = get-View ($vm. RelocateVM_Task ($spec, "lowpriority"))

    OK, I think I understand your problem now.

    I fear that in the current construction of PowerCLI, the Move-VM cmdlet does not destinations of individual data for each virtual hard disk store.

    With the RelocateVM_Task method, it is possible.

    The following script moves a guest at 3 different data warehouses:

    -the. VMX file for DS2

    -hard disk 1 for DS3

    -hard drive 2 TB DS4

    $vmName = "MyGuest"
    $vmxDS = "DS2"
    $osDS = "DS3"
    $dataDS = "DS4"

    $vm = Get-VM -Name $vmName

    $vm.Extensiondata.Config.Hardware.Device | %{
         if ($_.DeviceInfo.Label -eq "Hard disk 1"){
              $osDiskId = $_.Key
         }
         elseif($_.DeviceInfo.Label -eq "Hard disk 2"){
              $dataDiskId = $_.Key
         }
    }

    $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpec

    $osRelocate = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpecDiskLocator
    $osRelocate.Datastore = (Get-Datastore -Name $osDS).Extensiondata.MoRef
    $osRelocate.diskId = $osDiskId

    $dataRelocate.diskId = $dataDiskId

    $spec.Disk = @($osRelocate,$dataRelocate)
    $spec.Datastore = (Get-Datastore -Name $vmxDS).Extensiondata.MoRef
    $spec.Host = $vm.Extensiondata.Summary.Runtime.Host

    $task = Get-View ($vm.Extensiondata.RelocateVM_Task($spec, "lowpriority"))
    while("running","queued" -contains $task.Info.State){
         $task.UpdateViewData("Info")
         sleep 5
    }

    BTW, you can use the cmdlet Set - hard disk to a virtual disk that is specific to a data store.

    But as I understood what is not possible in your environment.

  • .vmx file problem

    Hello:

    I tried to get my internet works again in my Vista virtual machine and did not have much success. I tried installing new network adapters and use in bridge, NAT modes and have no chance. I did some reading on this forum and noticed that you can edit the .vmx file in the virtual machine bundle. I opened the file with textedit and had a look. I noticed that on line 18 it says ethernet1.present = 'FALSE' and decided to 'try' to change this value to "TRUE", thinking that I could always go back and change back 'False' if it did not work. When I went to start the Fusion my library came up with an error in my virtual machine indicating:

    File "/ Users / * / Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/My VM Fusion VM / my VM Fusion VM.vmx" line 18: '\xD2TRUE\xD3' value for the variable 'ethernet1.present' is not valid in encoding "UTF - 8".

    I went back into the file and he came back to FALSE, and the same message with the same error except TRUE is now changed to FALSE?

    Is it possible for me to fix this problem? I have a saved snapshot, but it is a bit old, but don't know even what will work. I don't want to try something different I can aggravate.

    Thanks for your time in advance.

    RumbleRipper

    It seems that we are not like the "characters that you used (maybe TextEdit is turning into quotes)-try to copy another line in the .vmx file." In addition, this line is not something that you need to change - plug or unplug NICs in the settings of the virtual machine would have the same effect.

    I went to my documents and I had this issue, and I clicked on something that is called HIDE and I don't know how to get to this file now! Anyone know where are the hidden files?

    Go to start / Control Panel / folder Options / view and check the box to show the hidden files and folders and uncheck to hide extensions of known file types.  Only the first is required for this problem, but the other may be useful later and you might as well do it while you're already here.

    Now, you will be able to see the folder.  It will be in the same place, it has always been (it has not been assigned) - it was just hidden and now that you can see hidden files and folders you can see again.  You may notice that it deteriorated a little bit lighter that other records - it is a sign that it is a hidden file or folder.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

    I, stupid, changed the program by default to a BAT file to the cmd prompt, well, now I can't run the batch files now, please help!

    Hi William,.

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

    Batch file is a type of script file, a text file, containing a series of commands to be executed by the command prompt. When you run a batch file, it opens the command prompt to run the scripts.

    It would be great if you can answer the following questions:

    1. what happens when you try to run a batch file?

    2 are. what batch file you referring?

    3. the problem occurs for a particular batch file?

    First of all, I suggest you to check the commands written in a batch file. To do the same thing, just right-click on the batch file, and then click change. It will open Notepad with the list of orders scripted for this particular batch file.
