vNIC/vHBA UCS 1.4.2b Placement
Hi all
I found that the configuration for the vNIC/vHBA investment option is changed. In point 1.4.1 there are only 2
Vcons(4) is the B440M1 blade. But now, when I upgraded 1.4.2b UCS, there are 4 Vcons(4) see room for blades of same.
Can someone explain in detail on this change? Thank you very much!
David,
My mistake. This was introduced in 1.4 (2).
If you use a blade, only two connections that you have to worry are vCon 1 & 2. vCon 3 & 4 apply only to the servers in a rack.
Kind regards
Robert

How vNIC or vhbas you create for esxi installation?
for a UCS not, I used to do, 8 vmnic (physical NIC)
2 for mgmt
2 for vmotion
2, for VMS (trunk)
2, for iscsi
only 2 network cards to create to ucs?
or do I 8 vNIC?

Hello
I have a question regarding the placement of vnic in UCS specifically to the assignment of vCon.
In my system, I have B200M3 servers with the UCS Vic1240 + mlom expansion card.
What I was wondering how much is vCon I have in my system? What I've read, each vCon is the virtual representation of the physical map, so in my case, I only vCon. It makes sense, because when I look at where the system has placed my vNIC, they are all associated with vCon1.
However, when I look at the "Modify vNIC/vHBA investment" and do one manually, I see four Vcons(4) (vCon1 - vCon4). Is that by default, or I would be able to use Vcons(4) 2-4? If I can, so I wonder why the system has only chosen to use vCon1?
Any help in this understanding would be gratefuly received!
Thank you
Dominic
VCON is equivalent to the physical I/O adapter; in your case VIC-1240 + port expander is 1 I/O adapter, so you only vcon.
the fact that 4 vcon to appear, has to do with the fact that the UCS C-Series servers can have up to 4 I/O adapters; B-series servers are limited for the moment 2 I/O adapters.

Update of the blade and the vhba vnic OS driver update firmware
Hi all
Political host Firmware package within SPs allows us to update the Firmware of the blade.
It works very well.Usually we do things in the following order:
1 change the host of firmware in an SP, "user Ack' reboot to trigger the update of the firmware on blade.
2. when the blade firmware update is completed, booting into the operating system (Windows or ESXi) and upgrade the vnic and vhba drivers, then reboot again.Because the steps above involve 2 reboots, we thought if it's ok to save 1 reset the first update the vnic vhba OS drivers, then 'user Ack' a reboot so that both the drviers and firmware must appear in a single reboot?
For example:
1. upgrade the vnic and vhba drivers in the operating system (Windows or ESXi). Does not accept the prompt to restart within the OS.
2. in the SP of the UCS, change firmware, "User Ack" restarting host to trigger the update of the firmware on blade.
Result: A single reboot instead of two reboots. Is this ok to do it in that order, and it is supported?
Thank you
RR
Hi RR
Yes, this works as you describe!

After installing ESX on UCS Blade (adapter type is Palo, the number of network cards is 2) sometimes I see that the uplinks are vmnic2 and vmnic3 (output of esxcfg-NICS - l)
Where are the output of esxcfg-vswitch - l shows the uplink as vmnic0, and it also generates a warning saying there is no such thing as vmnic0.
This happens not all the time. Anyone know why this might be happening?
I saw this happen a little when you do not have NICs as the first devices in the vNIC/vHBA Placement. By default, we put the HBAs first sometimes ESX doesn't like it and will the NPI as vmnic2 and 3. If you move the network above the HBA cards, they come as a vmnic0 and vmnic1. I have always to reorganize and put my NIC before my storage.

Server Rack with two VIC 1225 C460 - vNIC UCSM investment policy
I try to incorporate C460 have 2 cards of VIC 1225 with UCSM. The goal is to have 2 assigned to each VIC, one by FI ethernet interfaces.
vNIC on VIC 1 - FI 1A failover to FI B
vNIC 2 on VIC 1 - FI B to FI A failover
vNIC on VIC 2 - FI 3A failover to FI B
vNIC 4 on VIC 2 - FI B to FI A failover
I created a service with 4 vNIC profile and assigned to C460. When the UCSM is configured to use the default system for the vNIC/vHBA investment strategy, all 4 to network adapters are assigned to a VIC. When you try to manually place with 2 vCon1 and 2 on vCon2, I see insufficient resources error. The CIV are recognized and UCSM Server tab shows the two of them as well as adapters.
Could you get it someone please let me know how?
Thank you!
The C460 has an integrated BCM-57711 that also would be recognized by the system. What is more likely is that the 1225 s of VIC are on vCon1 and vCon3 and the map of the BCM is on vCon2, since FF is is not supported on the Broadcom adapter it would cause the association to fail. Try to place the manual placement with vCon1 and vCon3 and see if that clears up the issue.

Hi guys,.
I work in Cisco, and we have a problem for a few days, so I thought it would be useful to ask here.
We created the service with 3 vNIC profile and tried to associate it with a server [actually, we tried 4 different servers] and always, the error we get is:
"not enough vNIC.
connection-investment
There's not enough global resources. "
Once I realized the error code is F0327, but not always.
I suspect it's something with the IO Module or do not know what?
Please, can anyone help?
Thanks in advance,
Ron
Hi guys,.
I just wanted to post this for everyone else reference.
Blade: B200 M1
Adapter: Cisco UCS M71KR.-e.
3 VNIC was applied. Two NICs FOR interconnection fabric A and b. interconnection 1 VNIC to the tissue that was a fail with the error "connection placement. This is due to the fact that this card is part of the series of Menlo, in which physical network adapters are mapped to left and right that they can't stand to not "allow failover. This is due to the hard Menlo being mapped to each fabric interconnect so that would mean a VNIC / VHBA by the interconnection fabric.
Once this has been corrected this error disappeared and the association of service profile is complete.
Kind regards

Question of VLAN native of UCS
All,
I have a problem that I can not just wrap my mind autour. We have UCS setup in a lab with 2 interconnections connected to 2 nexus switches 5510. The nexus switches are passed to the network via a Switch 4900 m. All circuits are configured and tested as functional. All routing is configured and confirmed. I have a problem in UCS, which is confusing to me. In the lab, I kept the VLAN native to the vlan1. I have the Setup VLAN 2-10 on all switches test and interconnections. I created a service profile that contains 1 network card and placed it in the VLAN 7. I installed Windows 2008 on a blade using this service profile. In the operating system I statically IP'ed the NIC for the schema used in VLAN 7. The OS, I cannot ping another device located in the vlan 7. Also, I can't ping a host on a different VLAN. If I place a check on the VLAN 1 as the vlan native I still cannot ping anything. If I place the audit for vlan native to vlan 7 I can ping hosts in the same vlan, as well as outside of the vlan. So why should I place vlan 7 as the vlan native when all my boxes are set up in the vlan 1 is the vlan native?
Thanks for any help,
Ken
Ken,
When you allow some VLANs on your Service vNIC profile you will need to set the VLAN native. This is because the way you have configured currently you are only "allowing VLAN 15', but you're not marking it. It will work fine for ESX or Linux which allows to assign the dot1q tag to the host. With Windows unless you have specific drivers doing the marking for you, you will need to do it at the level of the vNIC in UCS.
Two ways to see this in action. When you create a service profile in the 'Basic' - not 'Expert' method, you will need to choose a single VLAN for your interfaces. This will treat interfaces about like an "access Port". Conversely, when you use the "Expert mode you select the vNIC as a trunk, in which you" will allow to "all VLAN you acceding them as to, like this is the method you did.»
For a Windows operating system, set the VLAN natively for the VLAN you want to access and you'll be gentle. Unchecking this option button that "VLAN native" is allowing traffic to cross out of UCS on the VLAN native VLAN 1, your network - it is therefore MAC appears on other fabric under VLAN1
Kind regards

Cisco UCS 5108 add NIC to ESXi host
Hello
I'm quite new in the world of the UCS, so I slowly read up on it. We currently have a laboratory with a 5108 that host two of our esxi5 servers. When I say lab, I mean a configuration that is not in production yet, and if I can use it to learn right now. I just now each server I create gives me only 2 network cards to work with, so I would like to add. I have attemtpted to add a new network adapter for the service model and apply it, but I get the following error.
"There are not enough global resources. Not enough available vNIC.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if 2 is my limit.
Thank you
Welcome to Dennis,
The quantity of NICs you can create depending on the model of the adapter.
E.g.
See the diagram below for the virtual interfaces supported by the adapter model
When you use the VIC M81 maximum interfaces that you create also depends on the number of links between IOM (chassis) and interconnections of fabric). 56 is assuming that you have 4 links of each fabric of interconnection of each IOM.
In addition, blades of large width (B250, B440) can support two adapters mezz, so you can adjust the vnic/vhba max.
Kind regards

Not supported. of static vNIC to the Palo and Vic CNAs for ESX 5
Hello
I looked everywere see that clearly described. Most of the sources list only the no. dynamic vNIC taken in charge. Then I found a document describing the no. adapters for static and dynamic types for some operating systems and ESX 4. But not ESX 5. Someone at - it a CISCO document describing this? I think documentation is vey vague about that.
If no doc, tdll just me, please... M81kr and CIV
The calculation as Abi said is based on the number of uplinks recognized.
The calculation is [15 * (number of links recognized IOM)]-2.
1 uplink [15 * 1] = - 2 = 13 vNIC/vHBAs
Uplink 2 = 15 * 2] - 2 = 28 vNIC/vHBAs
4 uplink = [15 * 4] - 2 = 56 vNIC/vHBAs

Port of UCS license with 2K extensor of fabric
A FEX as a 2232 can be added to the UCS to provide additional ports for connecting C-series servers. Do still allows you only the ports used on the interconnections of fabric - that is to say, I add a 2232 using bindings rising 2x10GE at each END, I win 32 10GE connections to servers, but use only two licenses of port on the FI?
Thank you

Hi all
I have my UCS Manager and I need to do an upgrade, my question is the VMS, I executed what I need to move them from one device to the other? or I can do the upgrade with no downtime?
Can someone give me a procedure on how I do this?
Thank you all.
Hello
An upgrade is usually done in two parts:
(1) infrastructure (IOM, UCSM, fabric interconnection networks)
(2) blades (BIOS, adapters, CIMC, Controller Board, Flexflash, etc.)
During upgrade infrastructure, you will need to restart the fabric connects one at a time. When you make one of your two fabrics will be down for about 20 minutes. If you have redundant vNIC/vHBAs in all of your tissues A and B, it should ask only degraded services in the environment. However, a maintenance window is always recommended. When you upgrade the blades, you will need to restart. This is probably where you should move your virtual machines. After that you upgrade the blades make sure you update your OS drivers as well!

Sanjeev,
A vfc interface will remain in a State of detention until he is intialised by HBA ROM option or the OS drivers. If you try to boot from SAN, make sure that you load the package Option ROM host Firmware for your service profile. This applies to the Emulex & Qlogic based adapters. Palo M81KR VIC option ROM will load automatically like it's a SAN target configured in the policy of starting.
-What adapter are you using?
-If trying to boot from SAN, your startup strategy is configured with your SAN targets?
-If the initialization of local disk, HBA was responsible in the host operating system driver?
Answer/confirmation above and we will examine further.

FEX-Uplink Failover, loadbalancing
I would like to understand more of the technology within a vblock
I have a few questions graduallySo I'm out. pls be patient and thank you in advance...
VBlock 720 with the following generic configuration
Switch 2 x Cisco 5000 Series
2 x FI 6248
6 x chassis 5108
FEX 2204
VIC 1240 (no Mezzanine Card)
8 x M3 blade, 2 CPUuplinks of 4 x 10 G of each FEX to FI (port channel)
uplink of 8 x 10 G of each FI for Ciso 5000 series swith (vpc)Assumptions:
All chassis are completely fill
Each blade has consistient thoroughput of bandwidth, but 6 GB
- When the blades connect to FEX A and B FEX, are active active connections?

- What is the method that load balances blade ping?
- Assume 1 Uplink fails between FEX and FI, is the uplink 1 on FEX B overexploited.
- How the virtual machine decides which ANC port to send traffic?
She now...
See online
When the blades connect to FEX A and B FEX, are active active connections?
I assume you mean of FEX = IOM in the chassis;
Yes the two fabrics are active; all VIC are double hosted the fabric a and b
For exampleIs blades 1 and 5 has made the fallen on the same ports on the same FEX FEX?
You have the choice between static pinning (made by UCS Manager) blade slot to an Uplink of IOM, or set a port between IOM and fabric channel interconnection; port channel is the preferred mode.
Static pinning depends on model of IOM, 2204 / 2208 and the number of uplinks, for example
2204-4 uplinks
slot 1 and 5--> uplink 1 chassis
2 and 6-> uplink 2 chassis slot
......
2208-8 uplinks
Chassis slot 1-> uplink 1
Chassis slot 2-> uplink 2
......
Pinning static if a rising fails, the fabric slots correspondent has or b, are declining. There is no repinning for remaining uplinks; grouping and multipathing will take the appropriate action.
If you have a port-channel, and you lose a link, no problem, as long as there is at least a link to the top; your bandwidth will decrease, but th vnic/vhba are still in place
What is the method that load balances blade ping?
Don't understand; To be more specific
Assume 1 Uplink fails between FEX and FI, is the uplink 1 on FEX B overexploited.
Yes, in principle. but you will have to design oversubscription from end to end in any case!
How the virtual machine decides which ANC port to send traffic?
It depends on the hypervisor; Take, for example, VMware ESXi and vswitch: load balancing can be configured by switch and / or port-group; important caveat: do not hash IP as interconnection of fabric does not support the Protocol LACP; by default, the original virtual¨port code.

B420M3 w / 1240 + PE + 1280 + IOM ESXi 2208 + 5.5
Hi all
I w B420M3 4CPU / 1240 Port Expander + 1280 + IOM ESXi 2208 + 5.5
based on my understanding, I should get 40 GB + 40 + 40 GB of total bandwidth of 40 GB = 160 GB per blade, see attached schema.
How vNIC must be created in the service profile in order to reach the 160 GB of bandwidth?
If 4 vNIC, how should vNIC/vHBA be mapped to Vcons(4)?
Thanks in advance.
Lennie
Correct: 80 full duplex G by fabric
My 2 c
-between each I/O and IOM adapter, there is a pc 4 10 links; Therefore, by stream, you have a 10G limitiation
-consider the oversupscription to the North, the IOM - FI and FI Northbound
-with 2 I/O adapters, you have 2 vCON
-If you create vnic, use manual placement to assign them to fabric or B and vCON 1 and 2.
-min number of vnic is 4 (vCON has 1 & 2 fabric, (vCON 1 & 2 fabric)
