vSphere and HP EVA 4400 storage performance

Hi all

Maybe someone can help me.

Today I have a virtual infrastructure composed of two servers blades (2 cpus) and EVA 4400 storage with an enclosure full (12x400GB - 10krpm). Servers and storage are connected by fibre channel (4 GB connection).

I was guided by the society that places the first architecture to store each VM in a single LUN in EVA. This means that my Active Directory VM with 30 GB of vdisk is stored in a 40 GB logic unit number. They said it was better for the performance of the virtual machine, because it will be "only" to the LUN. It's okay? Do I have to keep doing this or it is better to store as much VM as possible with a vdisk with max 256 GB (more small block)?

I'm asking this because I'm planning and infrastructure upgrade: add another Blade Server, upgrade the 64 GB memory on each host and add another enclouser EVA storage (+ 12x400GB - 10krprm).

Today, I have a considerable of I/O use because I run 5 noon productive SAP environments with Oracle database, a database of Oracle 11 g and several applications and infrastructure servers. With the upgrade, I might add, for storage, the following VM: swap (~ 600 mailboxes), SQL server, IIS, 2 x Oracle 11 g, print server, Nagios,...

Please let me know your thoughts about the size of the LUNS to the virtual machines and the impacts on performance.

Best regards

Christian

Hmmm... Another 'know everything' without actual knowledge consultants.

If your multiple LUNS share the same physical disks - it absolutely doesn't matter in terms of performance if you VMs are placed on LUNS dedicated or shared. But you lose the flexibility with dedicated LUN.

It's okay? Do I have to keep doing this or it is better to store as much VM as possible with a vdisk with max 256 GB (more small block)?

Shared LUNS and several virtual machines on it will work absolutely perfect and you will be able to manage the space much more easily, especially with thin disks.

In this case think of separate VMs with load I/O high and low load and place them on separate disk groups, so they definitely do not affect each other performance.

  • IOmegaEZ Media and backup center low transfer Performance files

HI, I have a 1 TB storage media and Center IOmegaEZ backup.

The operating system NAS device connected via the ethernet port to home LAN via a router device domestic classic.

In some cases (frequently) during the transfer of records and files to the storage of any PC on the LAN (through the process of copy/paste in windows Explorer) performance or bandwidth decreases considerably, at levels of 50 Kbps and the process becomes extremely slowly.

To resolve this situation, I need to restart the IOmega device.

    Because this can happen?

    Thank you

    Facundo Baudino.

OK, I'll try to disable the media server and upgrade to the latest version of the firmware.

If the problem persists I will contact you with technical support.

    Thanks again!

  • Isolate storage performance problems

I'm looking for the most effective strategy to isolate a possible performance problem and to determine if storage is the cause.  VMware said that this physical device read latency and physical device write latency must be sheer 20ms lower and 10 ms on average.  I see peripheral physics average 11 percent read latency and write the average latency on some HBAs.  I see 120ms peak read latency and 240ms latency of writing on some HBAs.

Suppose I want to isolate this issue - how to efficiently determine if these measures indicate the storage as the cause of the poor performance of the application?  (For example, storage VMotion virtual machine which is own LUN with no other VM and see if there is a difference in performance - something that does not require a lot of time).

Migrate the virtual computer on a local storage on one of your hosts to see if latency goes away. Then you know almost for some it's a problem on the ESX Server or on the fabric. My bet is that it is on the fabric. Run perfstats on table and you will most likely find that you are maxing out the SECOND battery on the diskgroup to support for the LUN that you write to.

    I have a question:

I'm not going to add disk space. How can I do this?

    Hi Sawinio

I did last weeken similar operation, but on eva4500

    what I did:

    1. Add new disks to eva

    2. create the new LUN on EVA

    3. present LUNS to the ESX host

    4. rescan HBAS on hosts

    5. to extend existing VMFS

    all actions without problems

but do not forget to BACKUP in the FIRST PLACE, just in case if extend process could get crashed

  • vSphere and vCenter license price is based on the YEAR?

    Hello

Even if I already know as the product of vSphere and so forth and I am familiar with other virtualization technologies (I will avoid to mention here), I would like to ask about the license costs.

Currently, we use various stand-alone vSphere servers (sometimes evaluation license and a free license for 5.5), but I would like to have vMotion Metro and subnet rather than in private solutions like 'Veeam' quick migration, etc.

I went to see the costs... which are generally extremely high, but then I realize that the cost is basic 1 year or 3 years, which means that all VMWare license costs are billed ANNUALLY?

I mean, if I have 3 hosts ESXi and a cVenter with cost € 4000 will be € 4000 per year? I think it's crazy.

    Can anyone confirm?

    Concerning

    Hey,.

When you buy the license first, you pay X amount, which includes the license to base 1 or 3 years Support and subscription (SnS).

After this time, you pouvez renew your SnS for amount Y. For vSphere, one year basic Support is about 10% of the initial report and if I remember correctly.

But you don't have to renew the SnS, your software will continue to work.

SnS assets allows you to call VMware and leader in applications for support and very important: you can upgrade your license to the new major version keys when it comes out.

If for example you can improve your keys of vSphere vSphere 5 6 keys subsequently.

I see in the description of the product Horizon Suite includes 'View of the Horizon', but we know not if it's the 'Horizon view Bundle', which includes vSphere and vCenter, or the "Horizon view add-on", is not.

Anyone can clarify that for me?

Yes more horizon will include office and Desktop vSphere vCenter.

How can I get the vmx file (which I'm trying to power on) to show the vmdk (hard drive) file?

    Hello.

If you use the standalone converter, you can certainly use to a destination server.  You can get detailed information about the supported source and destination types in the user's Guide.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Information on p.14 means that Windows 2000 SP4 is not compatible with (in other words, you can not install) the Client vSphere, vCenter Server and VMware vCenter Update Manager.

Specific versions of Windows 2000 Server can be verified to support in the Compatibility Guides.  As long as you plan to run the Client vSphere, vCenter Server or VMware vCenter Update Manager on Windows 2000 virtual machines, you'll probably be fine.  It depends on which version of Windows 2000, you have, but just check the compatibility guide to be sure.

    Good luck!

    Response from HP:

It seems that EVA communicates very well with the Sra So. now, you need to scan for the SRA in SRM and then try to perform the replication again. If she fails to perform replication with the SRM then you will need to contact the VMware team, because that would be a problem with the SRM and not a problem with the EVA contacting the SRA.

Not sure what Miss us here. I work with the administrator of storage without result.

We found the problem, it was because of the permission on the user account for the table. Need to be added to the storage administrators group.
