ESXi vSphere 4.1 Update 1 storage performance?

Storage of sober, yo me centraria in lo siguiente:

CMDS/sec

  • vSphere and HP EVA 4400 storage performance

    Hi all

    Maybe someone can help me.

Today I have a virtual infrastructure composed of two servers blades (2 cpus) and EVA 4400 storage with an enclosure full (12x400GB - 10krpm). Servers and storage are connected by fibre channel (4 GB connection).

I was guided by the society that places the first architecture to store each VM in a single LUN in EVA. This means that my Active Directory VM with 30 GB of vdisk is stored in a 40 GB logic unit number. They said it was better for the performance of the virtual machine, because it will be "only" to the LUN. It's okay? Do I have to keep doing this or it is better to store as much VM as possible with a vdisk with max 256 GB (more small block)?

I'm asking this because I'm planning and infrastructure upgrade: add another Blade Server, upgrade the 64 GB memory on each host and add another enclouser EVA storage (+ 12x400GB - 10krprm).

Today, I have a considerable of I/O use because I run 5 noon productive SAP environments with Oracle database, a database of Oracle 11 g and several applications and infrastructure servers. With the upgrade, I might add, for storage, the following VM: swap (~ 600 mailboxes), SQL server, IIS, 2 x Oracle 11 g, print server, Nagios,...

Please let me know your thoughts about the size of the LUNS to the virtual machines and the impacts on performance.

    Best regards

    Christian

Hmmm... Another 'know everything' without actual knowledge consultants.

If your multiple LUNS share the same physical disks - it absolutely doesn't matter in terms of performance if you VMs are placed on LUNS dedicated or shared. But you lose the flexibility with dedicated LUN.

It's okay? Do I have to keep doing this or it is better to store as much VM as possible with a vdisk with max 256 GB (more small block)?

Shared LUNS and several virtual machines on it will work absolutely perfect and you will be able to manage the space much more easily, especially with thin disks.

In this case think of separate VMs with load I/O high and low load and place them on separate disk groups, so they definitely do not affect each other performance.

  • Nested ESXi 5.1 and iSCSI Shared Storage

    People:

I am unable to get my ESXi servers nested to see the iSCSI shared storage, that I put in place for them.  I use iSCSI for the ESXi host, who holds the guests of ESXi, so I have a successful iSCSI configuration to use as my reference.

Here's what I have for the host network config:

    iSCSI targets

+ IP1: 172.16.16.7 (subnet for host IP storage)

+ IP2: 172.16.17.7 (subnet for storage over IP comments)

vSwitch associated vmnic2 on NIC IP storage

+ Port "IP storage" group containing virtual NIC both ESXi hosts

+ VMkernel Port for iSCSI host connections: 172.16.16.28

Here's what I have to config network comments:

+ The highest virtual NIC group of ports "IP storage".

+ vSwitch with only a VMkernel port for iSCSI of the guest connections: 172.16.17.38

From the iSCSI host, I am able to ping 172.16.16.28.  However, I am unable to ping 172.16.17.38, and here's the really confusing part - I am able to get an answer ARP of that associated with the VMkernel port with the correct MAC network CARD!  This eliminates all kinds of potential configuration issues (for example means bad NIC, bad IP, etc..)

The firewall on the host indicates the software iSCSI port outgoing 3260 Client is open.  Capture of the target iSCSI host package reveals no. TRAFFIC from VMkernel IP guest when updating to storage adapters.

What should I look at?  The configuration of the host against the host looks identical yet we work and there is no...

    -Steve

In the debugging process so, I turned on the "Promiscuous" mode on the vSwitch associated vmnic2 on the NETWORK card on the host IP storage ESXi and poof!  Everything magically started working.  The iSCSI traffic be unicast, so I don't see why promiscuous mode would be necessary, but I can't argue with the results observed.  Clearly, I have more to learn more about nested ESX, that's why I'm playing with it.  :-)

  • Dell M620 (VRTX) blade - ESXi 5.1.0 Update 1 installation upgrade to ESXi 5.1.0 Update 3 (latest)

This morning I did an installation of upgrade to ESXi 5.1.0 Update 1 to ESXi 5.1.0 Update 3 (latest Version) on one of the blades of my VRTX M620 three 3.  I have the same problem that I met about a year, when I tried to update 1-2 update.  I had to go down to 1 update to see the data store.

With update 3, the data store does not appear on this blade.  I did a scan to see if the data store is present, but he did not.  Also, I restarted the blade which did not help.

I have to keep upgrading to 3 update due to the necessary correction of problem CBT.

How to troubleshoot and resolve this problem of my data store does not?

Note: I have very little experience with virtualization.  I just found today on how to access the interface from the CLI of blades.

    Thanks in advance.

    SOLVED.

The original sas megaraid drivers (even installed on the blades of M620 Dell) had to be installed.  It is my understanding that several versions of the megaraid sas driver provided on the Dell ESXi ISO are meant to satisfy the VMware HCL for this material.  However, the more recent does not show the data store.

  • replication between different versions of ESXi vSphere

    Hi all

Is it possible to use replication between different versions of ESXi vSphere? the scenario is as follows.

    Source site:

    vCenter 6

    Replication Unit 6

    5.5 ESXi

    The target site:

    vCenter 6

    Replication Unit 6

    6 ESXi

I understand that vCenter, SRM and VRA must match and vSphere replication 6 is compatible with ESXi 5 upwards and it is the vSphere host in the source location that replicates on the VRA rather than a host of ESXi target so it should work, but I wanted a certain Yes/No.

  • Installation server ESXi 4.0 to ESXi Server 4.0 Update 1

"Upgrade package of ESXi Server 4.0 to ESXi Server 4.0 Update 1.

    Using the download listed above:

What is the best practice for the installation/upgrade to update 1?  Is this possible via the host update utility 4.0?  And if so, how should we do about this process?

    Thanks in advance, TAndrist

You should not manually download any file at all.  The host update utility does all that for you.

Open the utility, add the host ESX (note a hack to run on Win7 before publication U1).

Click on file, download patches for vmware.

Then click on "Scan for Patches" and enter credentials for the host to ESX

Once who did button changes to 'host patch', click on it, then install.

Make sure that all virtual machines are stopped everything first.

Please give points for any helpful answer.

  • After Update 2, Esxi 5.0 host cannot see storage

I have a HP DL380 g-8 server that was running ESXi 5.0. He had 6 virtual machines running on it for 8 months with no problems. Today I applied the update 2 for ESXi 5.0 and it says the update successfully applied. After the reboot, the server could not detect any storage. When connecting with VSphere client it says "the ESXi host has no persistent storage." Virtual machines are listed as "unknown, 1 unknown unknown 2," etc.

All storage is local. There are four disks are attached to a P420 controller card. When I click on "Storage adapters" in vsphere client, he mentions the card controller as "Patsburg 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller '. I tried a new analysis and it did not work.

I think here, but I have an out of date firmware. I just found this page HP for the P420 with a VIB released a few weeks ago update:

    http://h20000.www2.HP.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en & cc = us & prodTypeId = 18964 & prodSeriesId = 5193414 & swItem = MTX-96dc068234d34bceba2e2e1139 & prodNameId = 5193409 & swEnvOID = 4115 & swLang = 8 & taskId = 135 & mode = 4 & idx = 1

This link describes how to install the firmware, but this particular ESXi host is far away and I can't seem to him physically. I can connect using SSH. So my question is (having never used SCP or updated firmware on ESXi): is it possible to completely remotely via SSH, and if so, how?

If there are any other suggestions, I'm open to them. No matter what to get storage online.

    Thank you!

You should be able to run this command in an SSH session.  As long as SSH is enabled, you should be able to SCP the file above.  WinSCP is a client of SCP Inuit free, for Windows, that should work just fine.

  • DataCore DataCore-V with ESXi, vSphere 4.1 iSCSI running

I have looked everywhere and come short on my problem, if this is a problem?  In the past, I have always connected all ESX / ESXi host through corn and now I work more with iSCSI.  I always try to get a handle on it.  It's one thing to read about iSCSI and he put in place of the other.  OK, now that I have that came down my chest, here is my question.

Should the two iSCSI connections in DataCore-V show ready if I have both connected?

Here's a high level race down the environment.

    1. a single node of DataCore

    2. a single ESXi host

    3. the two dual iSCSI ports

    4. on the DataCore node, only one port shows ready

    5. on the ESXi host two connections show connected

    Screen shot 2011-06-24 at 9.30.34 AM.pngScreen shot 2011-06-24 at 9.36.54 AM.png

    Help, please

    Hello

To meet ask you: It will say connected when a host 'iSCSI IQN init' is connected, simply because he says tell-connected does not necessarily mean that the 'network' is down... The host/s are not, cannot connected. (or none have been configured).

More information about your configuration will be useful, however check over the info / recommendations below (Simple config)

    1. you set the "Port" Type for the two iSCSI ports on the DataCore for "FE" "Front End" Server?

    2. you have defined two separate IP addresses for the iSCSI on DataCore iSCSI ports ports?

3 for simplicity on the ESX host, you have two distinct vSwitches for iSCSI with a NIC each with a vmKernel configured with IP to talk to the DataCore "target Ports.

Therefore to confirm you can test the interfaces between them... now connect connection to DataCore target ports

If you use software iSCSI Init, enable it on the ESX host... then you will need to "Discover" ports "targets" (static or dynamic)

Once you add the two DataCore target Port IP please make sure that you "Login" for them to the ESX host. (BOTH)!

If it worked, now you can join the 'Host' ESX in DataCore-V interface and assign the "iSCSI initiator" (from the ESX host) to it. (Only will be there for iSCSI Software...

Now, remember, there is that a single iSCSI Software initiator, the important thing is to make sure this initiator is recorded in the TWO ports of DataCore target... Check the DataCore-V 'Remote Ports"tab on each port of 'target' for the IQN of the ESX host name.

NOTE: DataCore servers don't support not multiple sessions to the same IQN to a vSphere Host to a unique DataCore iSCSI Target

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Also, please see best practice information about DataCore for your settings of the NETWORK adapter on the server of DataCore.

the iSCSI traffic should be strictly separated from the public network (user).
Use a separate hardware (LAN switches) to traffic storage iSCSI or less different virtual LAN (VLAN).
Use separate NICs for iSCSI and inter-stockage server and communication management.
Disable any other protocol or service except for "Protocol Internet (TCP/IP)" on the network adapters used for iSCSI. See help guide for detailed instructions.
3260 port must be open on the firewall to allow the iSCSI traffic.
On storage servers DataCore as well as disable Application servers/hosts these settings because they can cause disconnections and performance problems:
Disable AutoTuning on W2K8: netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel = disabled
disable RSS feeds: netsh interface tcp set global rss = disabled
disable the TOE: netsh int tcp set global chimney = disabled

Let us know how you and perhaps give a bit of monitoring more than info...

    Best regards

  • HP Custom Image for ESXi 5.0.0 Update 1 vs VMware provided

We use models of generation of servers, ProLiant DL HP 5, 6 and 7 to our environment vSphere. Someone at - it experience with the use of the HP device provided ISO vs VMware?

I've been using VMware images provided and for moving to ESXi 5.0U1, I am trying to determine whether to use images of HP now.

Suggestions, comments, and or PROs or idiots would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

As others said, the ISO provided HP is very good, but it is in no way a magic requirement. They contain little update driver-VIBs and, in addition, the material management extensions.

Basically, everything that HP and other hardware vendors are doing with their ISOs custom entering the release of vanilla by VMware, the addition of a few separate packages (material management extensions) and maybe replace some drivers specific with updated versions (as a driver more recent be2net, which is just what VMware offers as an updated driver to separate day on their site anyway). They do not affect the VMware components as esx-base package

You can also easily build an almost exact copy of HP image yourself, updated or additional drivers and management extensions are all available after all. And of course you can always install management packs and drivers updated in your vanilla install yourself afterwards, through for example Update Manager.

  • ESXi 5.1 and Update Manager

    Hi all

As I'm sure many of you are well aware, ESXi 5.1 is the latest version with a .NET VI Client is a separate installation. In the future, we want to use the Web Interface to manage ESXi hosts.

My question is with the Update Manager. Anyone know if you can use the Update Manager in the web interface? I see where use in the VI Client.

If you know the discussions or documents on how to use it in the web interface, please report it. Or if you know any information on the ability (or for that matter, cannot) use it in the web interface, I'd love to hear it.

    -Ed

    Hello Ed,

Yes, I work in VMware. In future releases it will not .net / c# and only web client. In this release VMware wanted users to use vSphere client and the web client, users can become comfortable with the web Client.

I am sure that in future versions, the MU plugin will be integrated.

    Hope that answers your questions.

Our servers are installed with HP Image custom/iso "5.0_Oct_2011_ESXi_HD_USB_SDImgeInstlr_Z7550_00253".

Now I would like to update the servers to 5.0 Update 1 without having to reinstall them.

I found the iso-U1, but I think it is is not update... shouldn't it be a zip file or have I misunderstood something?

If anyone can help find the right way to update U1 servers, including CIM/NMI suppliers/drivers?

    Thanks for the help!

    Simon

You can upgrade using the ISO HP, present on your server when you are prompted to perform an upgrade rather than a facility.

Iso HP includes CIM providers and drivers.

Although I always perform a clean installation rather than an upgrade, if you have company liked, you can use a host profile to save the current configuration and reapply after the new installation.
