vSphere ESX or ESXi? Only one to choose...

Hello

I have to make the decision between the two, currently I have a mix of ESX and ESXi installed in my infrastructure.

I heard we should all 'UPGRADE' to ESXi, well I thought that ESXi is that the poor cousin of the ESX ESX was the version to be on!

And how would finance ESXi, work permit?

Thanks, Julien

Hello

We have the ESXi since ESX 2014 will be step by step more vmware support.

and according to the licenceing is worrying choose from standard, walking, enteprise and wide + .whichever is suits your infra... all have their characteristics to distinguish and costs.

  • Licenses vs Upgrade vSphere ESX to ESXi immigration?

    Hello

The current environment has three hosts ESX4.0 with the Advanced license and vCenter Standard. Upgrade to Enterprise Plus, is little pain due to costs involved that. Each CPU will cost about $ 2400, which will include the support of the company "Active Advanced Support of license will not be considered, it is directed by represensitve sale."

Because eventually retired ESX and ESXi will only be one, I think migrating to ESXi. But, what I have to buy a new license for the ESXi or existing vCenter license will be able to manage ESXi hosts?

If I'm going to buy a new license for the ESXi, what are these licenses and what will be the cost of it?

    Thank you

ESXi is a constituent of the vSphere4. You will still need to upgrade your edition of desire, as advance to normalize or all at the same company for storage vmotion & DRS.

  • vSphere ESX or ESXi

This year we will be upgrading our existing vSphere 4.1 3.5 environment. Upgrade can mean also to replace the existing vmware servers.

I was wondering what would be the best way forward:'

Upgrading to ESX 4 or 4i?

I think vMware is trying to move away versions including a service console?

We are currently using virtual Center as well.

    Thank you.

They seek not only to do, they will. Later versions will only be ESXi ESX 4.1 is the latest version with a Service Console. If you must reinstall the host in any case, go with ESXi.

  • How do I know the thrue VSphere ESX Server?

    Hi all!

I have an ESX 4 server. I can connect with Putty, but the web server is not configured.

The ESX seem to be connected to a server for VSphere.

Is it possible, through a connection of PuTTY, to know the name or IP address of the server BSphere?

    Olivier

I guess when you say vSphere Server, actually talk you to vSphere vCenter that vSphere is simply the family name composed of 4th generation of vCenter and ESX (i) products, etc.

Anywho, yes it is possible, there are probably a few ways to do this (via newspapers, etc.)

    And here are two:

    (1) using the Console of Service of ESX classic

    Take a look at:

    /etc/opt/vmware/vpxa/vpxa.cfg

The result will be something like:

A.B.C.D # ESX Service Console IP
    E.F.G.H # vCenter IP

    (2) using the API vSphere ESX or ESXi

If you know how to use the API or managed object browser, there is a property that is ONLY defined if the host ESX (i) is managed by vCenter server defined by managementServerIp http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk400pubs/ReferenceGuide/vim.host.Summary.html

As we mentioned above, you can see newspapers go or vpxa so that should also have address discovery.

  • Move VMS between server ESXi and vSphere ESX server

    Dear all,

I want to move some a vSphere ESX server virtual machines to ESXi server.

I understand that some users will use CPS to move between the ESX servers, but apparently not for moving between different products.

I'm just using a slow and prone to error method:

The files of the virtual machine to my deskop PC of vSphere ESX server and then upload to the ESXi server.

I would advise you to please all of the methods that is better than this one?

    Help, please.

    Kind regards

    Tommy

If you got a central storage you can move virtual machines between the two products with vMotion. Since you don't seem to have available vMotion, you pouvez use scp. SCP has nothing to do with ESX/ESXi products. It is a Linux/Unix program which is available in both servers.

So with the CPS, you need a little less.

    The syntax is like:

    SCP - r/path/to/vm/directory user@esxi:/path/to/new/location

  • VSphere 4 - ESX or ESXi?

I am planning a virtualization project for my company including 3 vsphere hosts and a SAN. We are going with vsphere 4 enterprise more licenses because it will give us features HA and FT wider for any extension, we can demand in the future and the HP DL360 G6 servers. I got quotes for all of our hardware and software costs and I'm looking for ways to cut the total disbursement down slightly. A way of doing it would be to remove the hard drives and controllers usb compact flash running table of the configuration of the server and ESXi (our hardware vendors don't stock DL360 G6 with ESXi embedded).

I've read articles in May and discussions on the differences between ESX and ESXi, but I wanted to just some thoughts from people who have used the two flavors.

I understand that the main difference is the lack of service on ESXi console. People feel generally that it is a drawback to the use of ESXi?

Are there any other differences evident between the problems of reliability or performance 2 or any with ESXi?

If I create my own key compact flash/usb bootable, it would then be ESXi installable. Is there a difference significant between ESXi embedded and installable?

What people think of the compact flash/USB in a single point of failure as opposed to ESX running on hard disks mirrored?

Thank you very much in advance for any opinions offered.

    Concerning

    Nick

Yes - I which resound. Being official I am biased of course and the forums are not the place to sell you on an approach or another. However, one thing that is sure is that VMware will move completely to the ESXi model in a future release. This has been communicated for a few years now.

If there are third party software which are always based on the COS it is a reality that will lead you to a traditional model of ESX. If this isn't the case, I see no reason not to deploy ESXi (certainly with the train of the 4.0 version). Just as a point of clarication: ESXi is produced for the same source code base as ESX, there should be no functional difference between the two put aside from the interface options discussed above.

  • Application of ESX or ESXi Standard license or vSphere new purchase

    Hello

I read the following in another thread,

"You can apply any license that you purchase, be it Standard/advanced/business/Business Plus or even packages for small businesses vSphere Essentials and Essentials Plus, ESX or ESXi. Both will give you the same features allowed when it is applied. »

Once the license applies for example to ESX, does this mean I won't be able to change my mind at a later stage and move all my installations to ESXi?  Thanks for your replies.

    Best regards

    Robin

You can't really "switch" from ESX to ESXi - you will need to reinstall the hypervisor. But you will be able to use the same license key for ESXi you used for ESX.

  • Updating ESX to ESXI 5.1 4.1

We currently use ESX 4.1 and want to upgade ESXI 5.1. Are there instructions available through video upgrade or documentation? Also, how the new licence with respect to the use of memory and CPU in ESXI 5.1. What are the benefits of upgrading to 5.1?

    Thank you

    Scott

    Hi Scott,.

    http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/Techpaper/VMware-vSphere-50-upgrade-checklists.PDF

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=2032757

In ESXi 5.1, this link will give you a quick way to see license restrictions. Moreover, like a physical processor of rule 1 = 1 license (no carrots or vRAM limitations).

    http://www.VMware.com/products/Datacenter-Virtualization/vSphere/compare-editions.html

In the advantages, firstly, a change of ESX to ESXi. You will get a smaller and more secure hypervisor.

Since version upgrade from 4.1 to 5.1, this will depend on what version you have... for example, if you use now 'advantage' you will have "business" in version 5.1 as advantage licenses no longer exist.

Then you have many new available technologies, better technology HA that uses the heartbeat data store, you have more features such as VSA, vSphere replication, features improved, such as the Protection of the data instead of retrieving data... and the list goes just. Oh, you also have VMFS5 which is more flexible and optimized than VMFS3 (ATS instead of lun level blocks, only 1 block size, the larger capacities of data store, etc. etc.)

Know that when the upgrade of the service console ports will turn to ports (perhaps you need to enable HA on these manually later). Beware if you are using third party agents that maybe they do not work in the new hypervisor, check your scripts in case you have also some commands no longer exist, no VCB more, Manager update won't let you patch your virtual machines. So, carefully read the upgrade guides

    Best regards and good luck!

  • Difference between ESX and ESXi in production?

    Hello

I was asked to meet my client from my manager what difference does it make if I used ESX or ESXi in our world of production.

Except I can't think of a logical reason to use on ESX ESXi... Any ideas please?

    Thanks in advance!

PS - I know the basic difference between these two have read a few articles, but nothing gives me a practical reason to choose ESXi.

Since reliese the Service Console on ESX - which is based on RHEL - the reason that VMware moves to only ESXi is it eliminates the need to patch the Service Console and makes it more secure host.

  • ESX and ESXi

What are the fundamental differences between ESX and ESXi. Someone could it say please interview point of view. Just need about 4 to 5 differences.

    Thank you

    Prashant

The difference between ESX and ESXi, ESX was the classic version with a dedicated Service console embarked with him, however, ESXi is the version of Vsphere without the Console service. Because ESXi is without the service console, so its size is very small and its called summer have footprint small disc. With the release of VSphere VMware 5.0 and later versions has deprecated the classic ESX version there is therefore no now unavailable ESX and we only ESXi now.

  • Differences between ESX and ESXi

    Hai,

As I am new to VI environment I doubt that where features ESX and ESXi are different, it may be stupid but can help me a lot.

    Hello

Please check the link to the differences between ESX and ESXi below.

    http://www.VMware.com/products/vSphere/ESXi-and-ESX/compare.html

Please note ESX is present in version 3.x, 4.x. starting vsphere 5.0, we have only ESXi.

ESXi doesnot have a service console and has the smallest footprint of 70 MB and so is safer and more reliable, because it has a smaller surface set.

Please allow points if you find the article useful.

    Thank you

  • Should what version I go for, 4 Esx or Esxi 4?

Hi I am new to VmSphere and I want to start as soon as possible.

What is the difference between Esx and Esxi?

And that one should I go for?

There is an installable option and a built-in option.

That we on these I should go with?

    Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Since you are new to vSphere, I'd say go with ESXi.  ESXi is the future of the product, and you can also get it free!  Take the installable option and see if you have a piece of hardware on the HCL install it on.  Also be sure to check out the excellent product documentation.

    Good luck!
