VSphere turn

Hello

I have a bug reporting on my cluster and resolution official vSphere is to activate HA cluster level off and then turn it back on again.  My question is is this interrupt one of the virtual machines running in the production environment or they will not be affected by the action?

Hello, welcome to the communities.

deactivation and activation HA will have no impact on your virtual machines running.

  • Detach the 3.5 data store and pick up VSphere

I have an ESX 3.5 Server (no updates).  The server has two data warehouses.  The first is physically located on the server and the second is a DAS MSA-60 and is connected to a separate controller.  I want to install a new copy of VSphere 4.0 U2.  I moved all the VMS to the DAS storage and there is NO data on the local data store servers.

The plan is to turn off the server physically detach from the MSA-60, install a new copy of vsphere, turn off the machine physically re - attach the MSA-60 and restart.  I guess that Vsphere will see the data store immediately, or maybe that I have to scan for it and my vm will be there.  Of course, I'll have to their inventory, upgrade tools, then upgrade the hardware.

My biggest fear is that I'll lose the virtual machine.  Any reason why this happens because of the process?

    Hello

It sounds good, your virtual machine is not deleted if you disconnect the storage before the formatting of your server.

  • Turn on vSphere 4 Standard without vCenter

With the recommendation of a VMware Technical Account Manager, I bought vSphere 4 Standard. I use it in trial mode since for testing, and it is time to activate it. My only problem is that everything I've found so far indicates that activation must be done through vCenter.

Is it possible to activate it without vCenter? I have only a server unique vSphere, so I wasn't expecting any need by getting vCenter. I really hope that I don't have to buy another software to activate the software, I already bought.

Using the vSphere client connect to your host and click the Configuration tab and under the software it os a selection licenses and you would be able to put the licnse key -.

  • Working at the Player VM image but not the vSphere

    Hi all

I downloaded the Cloudera Quickstart 5.7 VM image and it works well on VM Player but does not work through vSphere.  I have downloaded all the files for the data store, right-click on the file in VMX to save it but when I turn on the virtual machine it says that it cannot find the VMDK file.  I checked the paths and everything seems fine for me.  I also removed the hard drive from the config and added it but who doesn't either.  I have included a picture of the error message I get from hovering over the error in the Web Client vSphere.

    Cloudera VM error.png

I use vSphere essentially 6.0.  The VMDK is divided into 17 files with "s001' thru 's017" at the end of the file name, and there is a file name which is without the suffix.  When I download the last of 18 files all files "sXXX" disappear it is a single VMDK showing - I guess that vSphere worked it's a disc more of 17 files divided.

I have another VM on the host/server underlying data store is fine.

    Any help very welcome!

    Best regards, Jim Hudd.

After a lot of searching on Google and a little for being smart, I worked on how to get this race.  Is there something on rare records, who dislikes the host EXSi in accordance with article (https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2045616).  I had to do something slightly different from the explanation to the problem; instead of cloning of disk space (files *.s001), I had to clone the main VMDK file.  This has created a VMDK single flat file, allowing the virtual machine run.  As a quick guide to fix this problem:

    • Open a command shell to the ESXi host
    • The virtual machine directory
    • Take a copy of the VMDK files (just in case!)
      • mkdir orig
      • CP * orig vmdk
    • clone the disks to a new flat VMDK file
      • vmkfstools-i
        thin d | thick
    • Remove the old VMDK files
    • Remove the original virtual machine hard disk
    • Add a new hard drive for the virtual computer by using the new VMDK file

    Hope this helps someone else.

    Jim.

  • Ask for help in vSphere HA

    Hi community

    Thank you GS

I still did not understand how I can put a limit for virtual computing only not to exceed the resources of physical calculation for exempel I want not vCPU more than pCPU host failure.

Lets assume that I have 3 guests with 8 Jepp by host. each host allocated 3 VMs with 2VPCU so it's not on subscription by host which is what I want

I case of a failure of the two host will be more stocked with vCPU than Jepp. How can I avoid it bothers me not for the latest VM which will cause more subscription be turned off and not start in the new host.

    Thank you

Reserves will ensure that virtual machines are getting the resources assigned to them. Virtual machines without reservations will start and get what's left. If they HA admission control enabled, HA will not allow VMs boot if the host does not have the resources to meet the reserves.

  • vSphere 5.5 with ethernet Intel x 540 - AT2 10BG question

VMware ESXi 5.5 with 10GB network card upgrade and switch hosts cannot do more than transfer of 750MBIT

    vSphere 5.5 with ethernet question intel x 540 10BG

    https://communities.Intel.com/thread/48512?start=0 & tstart = 0

We have dealt with this problem as these cards have been installed. We only run a custom lenovo ISO of ESXi 5.5 U3 on our 4 hosts. We have a complete infrastructure of 10 GB (switch/router/host). We do not seem to make more than 300 MB/s speed between Windows clients with network throughput tests, such as iperf and psping.

Between two VM linux on the same vSwitch, we can get a full 10GB and a little less during the delivery. We have not activated jumbo frames. We have tests with frames and get better speeds, but I don't think it should be necessary since we can get the full flow under Linux. I have a box to open with VMWare and no real progress has been made, they suggested tuning some settings on the network adapters in windows nothing helped.

Before I linked to similar problems with Intel 10 GB cards, other persons must have met as well.

I ended up resolving this issue. It turns out that RSS wasn't working properly in our test VMs so she distributed no treatment on the other cores of vCPU. It was indexing a processor and the others were at 0%. After the active spin up to two virtual machines on 2012 with RSS, I could easily break our previous limits. Another adjustment is possible, but we were getting ~8.5Gb/s with only the active RSS.

  • Migration of virtual machines to vSphere 4.1 to vSphere 6.0

As the title eludes to, we are standing up a new physics 6.0 Server vCenter Server and need to migrate virtual machines of 4.1 6.0 guest hosts.  I'd love to take the time to create a script that does the following; However, before heading down this path, I wanted to do a ping of the group to see if someone has done something like this before or have pointers to scripts that perform some of these actions already.  Some background and concept:

    • Running 4.1.
    • A new physical Center of vCenter 6.0 will be deployed side-by-side with 4.1.
    • The existing configuration of vSphere HA allows for 1-2 guests down without impact to the virtual machines.
    • The two environment and will be Cisco N1KV, SAN access shared for the same data storages.
    • A new vCenter will be lifted.
    • A single host is identified and VMs evacuated to the remaining hosts.
    • This host will be in maintenance mode, removed from the cluster and close.
    • A clean install of ESXi 6 will be done and set up spec.
    • N1KV will be deployed.

To digress on the details at the moment... Now markets PowerCLI desired.  This idea is ad hoc and on the fly, so as I write this.

    • identify all the virtual machines associated with a specific data store - will need to work with the local client to schedule downtime for virtual machines
    • Stop the virtual machine
    • Remove the VM of the vCenter 4.1 inventory
    • to connect to vCenter 6.0
    • Add the virtual machine to the vCenter 6.0 inventory (and once we have passed the first host in the new cluster, automatically place the virtual machine by using the DRS)
    • Reconfigure the vmnic with the new Cisco 1000V dvs (will be the same name on both sides, but has a different ID)
    • pull in the keys and the values to a CSV and advancedsetting set to harden
    • Turn on the virtual machine
    • Perhaps a test of ping for the NETWORK card to check connectivity

The order in which the steps are performed can be switched around, as long as the desired end result is the same: migration effectively virtual machines between two disparate solutions with single medium sharing as a data store.  In which I realize will always be VMFS3.  New data stores VMFS-5 is another task for another time.

Thank you for your time, suggestions, links, etc...

  • Problems with vSphere 6.0 and IIS 8.5

    Hi all

We have a very rare problem currently with IIS on a new version of vSphere 6.0.  We run 3 host ESX enterprise in a standard cluster with a standalone VCSA.

The problems that we know are response times in IIS.  We lack an asp.net web application using ado.net to extract simple data sets in a cluster SQL from 2012.  The web server running Windows Server R2 with IIS 8.5.9600.16384 2012.  It comes to virtualized.  Our SQL servers are also running on Windows Server 2012 R2, but this is a physical cluster.  All components are updated running the latest windows patches, fixes vmware, etc.

We have tried to limit the problem using wireshark, we noticed that speeds improved dramatically when running wireshark.  We have finally pinned it down to the NETWORK card is in promiscuous mode - mode "Promiscuous", web response times app are sub 100ms, and when we disable the promiscuous mode, response time pop up to 4 + seconds.

I found a few articles that might put this question of vSphere RARP and NLB in unicast mode, but we do not use NLB on any of these servers, and many of our tests were performed on servers IIS "standalone".

Someone encountered this problem before, and anyone has pointers?

    Thank you

It looks exactly like the problem that is described in this thread:

vmxnet3 adapter on windows server 2012 with problem of bottleneck for MSSQL Server

You also use the vmxnet3 vNIC?

If yes are trying one of these workarounds mentioned in the other thread (I'd go with LRO to start, do not forget to restart):

    E1000E use instead of vmxnext3

Use jumbo frames (not really good for us but can be one good option for others...)

Disable the LRO on a VMXNET3: enable or disable LRO on VMXNET3 adapter on a Windows Virtual Machine

Turn on LRO overall on a Windows Virtual Machine

  • vSphere replication when vCenter is down / crashed

I turn to convert our environment of re-usable in a VMware HA cluster, with MRS with vSphere replication Dr.

I want to know what will happen with the vSphere replication in either of the following scenarios

    1. A: vCenter Server running, Site B: vCenter Server of the site down
    2. A: vCenter Server down, Site B: vCenter Server of the site down

I'm not really able to find a clear answer on the web. I hope that replication of vSphere components still work, I don't know if the vCenter really need to work properly after the replication has been implemented.

vSphere replication is not dependent on vCenter for replication. Is dependent on the vCenter on target for recovery website. So in your examples (assuming that you are replicating b > has):

    1. the replication continues. You can restore a virtual computer needed

    2. the replication continues. You would not be able to recover a virtual machine until vCenter was running.

If you use SRM, SRM depends on vCenter (on-site running SRM) as well.

    Does make sense?

  • Regarding vSphere VCA and vMotion

    Hi all

I have several questions about vMotion and VCA, can anyone help?

    1. If I mix several types of CPU (from the same supplier of CPUS) in a vSphere without EVC cluster active, what will happen? can I vMotion VM on the host?

    2. I can vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Assume that CVS is not activated on the two groups.

    3. can I vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Assume that CVS is not enabled on the source cluster, but active on the destination Cluster.

    4. I can vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Suppose that EVC is enabled on the source cluster, but not active on the destination Cluster.

5 can I vMotion of virtual machine of a stand-alone ESXi host on an active EVC cluster? Assume that the CPU is the same.

6 the KB "EVC and CPU compatibility FAQ" below, if we disable CVS on a cluster, the virtual machine can only be migrated to hosts with CPU even or more.

Why virtual machines is only able to move to other ESX/ESXi hosts that are in the same generation of CPU or more? It's in front of my knowledge.

VMware KB: EVC and CPU compatibility FAQ

What is the impact on vSphere features of the Cluster when I turn off the CVS mode?

To turn off the CVS on a cluster mode, it affects vSphere Cluster features in the following ways:

    • vSphere HA (High availability): vSphere HA is not affected because of the cyclic power failover virtual machines when you start on a new host. This allows the VM picking up the new ID CPU and it allows to start without problem
    • vSphere DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler):
      • vMotion: virtual machines is only able to move to other ESX/ESXi hosts that are in the same generation of CPU or more. If the DRS is configured for fully automated, this can result in virtual machines, eventually migrating to hosts on the cluster with the generation of CPU more old where they cannot be moved via vMotion on different hosts with a newer processor generation.
      • Storage vMotion: virtual machines are able to be moved to Storage vMotion with EVC mode disabled in a cluster
    • Location of the pagefile: it is not affected.

    Thank you.

    1. If I mix several types of CPU (from the same supplier of CPUS) in a vSphere without EVC cluster active, what will happen? can I vMotion VM on the host?

    (a) you very well can vMotion virtual computers between the hosts with identical processors within the cluster.

    (b) for vMotions on different hosts, it depends on CPU instruction set parity and orientation, i.e. the older generation-> new generation or vice versa.

Consider the following: when a VM is turned on at the start, it is presented in UC sets from the physical host, where it has been turned on. It must keep these settings until the virtual machine is turned off, any host it is migrated to in the meantime. Therefore, as long as a host provides these CPU instruction sets, it can be vMotioned it. Further instructions on new hosts games is irrelevant for this and just hidden-away of the guest. So old-> new should be fine, but new-> old most likely will not work because the virtual machine works with games of additional CPU instructions that only is simply not supported by the older physical processor.

    2. I can vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Assume that CVS is not activated on the two groups.

Yes, generally vMotion shall function in older generations of CPU to the most recent, the same common CPU instruction sets are supported by the destination CPU host and enabled in the BIOS.

    3. can I vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Assume that CVS is not enabled on the source cluster, but active on the destination Cluster.

    4. I can vMotion VM Cluster with older CPU for the Cluster with more recent CPU? Suppose that EVC is enabled on the source cluster, but not active on the destination Cluster.

Yes, the same general vMotion as explained above requirements. If CVS is enabled on any, both or a cluster does not matter (of course provided a configured VCA level is not reverse the physical hardware capabilities 'new' and 'old').

5 can I vMotion of virtual machine of a stand-alone ESXi host on an active EVC cluster? Assume that the CPU is the same.

Yes, the same general vMotion as explained above requirements. A stand-alone host is exactly the same thing treated as a non - active EVC cluster.

    4. If set to true, above and then use the Update Manager to upgrade 5.5U3 to 6.0U1 hosts?

On step #3, you will need to create all the news on the new VirtualCenter and then move the new hosts of the former vCenter, have a look here for detailed instructions on how to make this gesture: VMware KB: move a managed ESX ESXi host to a vCenter Server to a different Server vCenter

And once with hosts on the new VirtualCenter, you can use Update Manager to upgrade to version 6 Update 1 or install from scratch.
