W500 post

I have n Acer Iconia w500 system. When the unit is turned on it makes a noise of continuous long beep and windows don't is not loading. However, if I press the volume key (whether upwards or downwards) the beep sound stops and windows loads. As a computer tech, I suspect that the volume button is stuck or maybe broken. I managed to remove the protective layers of the aircraft and inspected the volume button but saw no visible damage. No clue as to how I can resolve this situation? Almost certain that the unit is no longer under warranty. Or it could be a brick?

Update. I removed the back of the system and the scree of MB. I noticed that the small white button switch on the volume button has been blocked. I could you take off the button and now the system boots normally. Thanks for the suggestions.

    Hello

I have a 2HU W500 4061 old but faithful with all drivers up to date. The switchable graphics option is enable in BIOS. The laptop is running windows 7. How to know card wich is being use. I check with application of information material and the integrated Intel card get the list and the FireGL V5700 as well.

The usefulness of lenovo for the installation of the power supply, I can't find any mention of the map intel. Or in Control Panel. I have ATI CCC running. I would like to see a similar application to install the Intel card, but I can find.

    Help, please.

I read the following post: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/How-to-use-switchable-graphics-on-W500/ta-p/34...

But the option to switchabel isn't there, nor in basic or advanced mode.

You must install the software Power Manager and all necessary ancillary parts of Lenovo. Then, once you see the battery at the right bottom icon, right click on it and you will have the choice of "Switchable Graphics".

  • Intel W500 with Windows 7 video card problem

    Hi all

I installed windows 7 on my w500 (it was Vista when I bought it a year).

and I have the latest installed updates including graphic driver intel.

but the ruin the screen. This problem only occurs when I use the themes Aero, and if I use the discreet ATI video card, there is no problem too.

I tried to change the refresh frequency between 50 Hz and 60 Hz, between 16-bit and 32-bit color depth, is still no way to solve the problem.

anyone has idea about this problem?

    This solution should help you.

Basically, you need to Option 1 and 2 or Option 1 and 3.

Option 1: Disable virtualization for directed-IO (VT - d). This can be done in the BIOS Setup utility. When the system is first start (during POST), press F1 to enter the Setup utility. Then enter the Config menu and the submenu of the CPU. Changing VT - d for persons with reduced mobility.

Option 2: Make sure that there is only a single memory DIMM in the system.

Option 3: Make sure the memory of two DIMMs in the system are of equal size. For example, both are 2GB.

  • W500 LCD - mitigate variation with time?

    Hello

My W500 has been used for almost a year now, and sometimes I think he's wearing already dimmer. I know that my previous ThinkPads evenually all done - a limitation of this technology.

I am interested by ensuring that my W500 LCD screen brightness lasts for many years. Running, say a little less BRIGHTNESS level would retain the characterists illumination for a long time, or the LCD backlight will wear just because it is powered?

MacGyverRick, my experience with a variety of fluorescent-backlit poster over the years is this dimming the screen will allow to reduce the rate of ageing of the backlight. Whatever you do, NEVER RUN screensavers on LCD SCREENS! They are worse than useless, because they leave the backlight on its normal intensity all the time. The fastest way to age and darkens your fluorescent backlight is to leave your computer on all the time, running a screen saver when you are not using the machine. Who DIED of a fluroescent lighting.

But what I do is run that screen regardless of its intensity is better visually (which is about 85-90% for my W700). Then once I will not be using the screen for a few minutes, I turned off it at least. Or you can turn off the backlight altogether if you wish. For brightness, you can use the brightness (Fn + origin, Fn + end) or open Windows Mobility Center and drag the brightness of the display (start-> all programs-> Accessories-> Windows Mobility Center and put its icon in your taskbar for quick access). I guess you could also switch to the external display to turn off the backlight of the laptop altogether (set up using Fn + F7).

In any case, for example, I have a laptop Dell of the heavily used 12 year which display initially, I ran at full intensity all the time, including backlight faded significantly after one year. I then had the screen replaced because of damage caused by a faulty hinge, realized how many gradation had occurred this year and then began to turn off the backlight, whenever it was not necessary. This view is still very bright.

Similarly, I read a report of user W700, who said he measured the brightness of the screen after about a year, and that he had lost a third of its luminosity, wherease a LED backlit display he had during this same period rather only lost 4 per cent to itsbrightness. I ran display my W700 to 85-90% of brightness when I got it, because at 100%, it was so bright that my eyes hurt. A year and a half later, I still run 90% brightness, beyond which it is still too bright. So I did not close the gradation that there, and I perform the ritual preceding the minimum brightness display dimming whenever I have it won't need for the next few minutes. And in the power manager, I value the display turns off after 10 minutes of inactivity (Start-> all programs-> Thinkvantage-> Power Manager, basic settings, select "Change when the screen turns off"). I'm probably on the W700, 10-12 hours a day.

Also note that the LED backlight age much more slowly than the fluorescent backlight.

  • R400/T400/T500/W500: display driver "amdkmdap" hangs

Summary: Lenovo ThinkPads with switchable graphics (R400, T400 and T500, W500) have problems of usability under Vista and using external monitors. More than six months, users have been plagued by frequent Windows crashes. During this time, Lenovo will not expressed complaints and reports available. The end of April 2009, Lenovo has solved a lot of problems by releasing a new official driver. However, several problems, including serious, remain as of today. Lenovo said to work actively on the issues pending (without results so far).

Important information for users: If you experience any of the problems reported here, then Lenovo will advise you to call your local Lenovo support. Application that a case is submitted to engineering equipment. In particular, you should ask "a case CMVC to be created and degenerate". These "code words" ensures that your case be treated correctly.

    Old description of the problem

On Vista 32 and Vista 64, the "amdkmdap" ATI display driver hangs when an external monitor was active before OR an application (game) using the DirectX technology is used. The user receives usually few messages called "Timeout detection and recovery" (TDR) of Vista:

(Click here for an explanation of the message from Microsoft)

Sometimes, amdkmdap falls down several times in a row. Then, Windows crashes with a so-called "BSOD", probably resulting in a loss of data. Generally, Windows detects "atikmpag.sys" as the driver to crash. Instant restart sometimes also independent from the front THAT TDR crashes. In such a case, no BSOD is displayed.

The following video illustrates the phenomenon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBX9QsCmrpY

Above this behavior has been confirmed for the following ThinkPad models: R400, T400 and T500, W500 (see below). Problem reports that symptoms are often related to play games or the laptop being docked and the external monitor connected via DVI.

However, the presence of these two conditions is not necessary to trigger the accident to the driver:

    1. There are reports where no dock was involved and the external monitor is connected directly to the laptop VGA port.
    2. In addition, there are reports where the laptop is docked and an external monitor is connected to the DVI port.
    3. So far, there were no reports related to a monitor connected on the display Port that is available on some models. (Perhaps because this port is not used.)
    4. There are a few cases where a dock, or an external monitor was involved.
    5. Some games with reliability triggers the crash.

    Steps to reproduce

While initially (around September 2008 - October 2008) the accident can be triggered easily, the situation is now (December 2008) more complex. Accidents happen again, although there is no clear model more. According to various reports, the crash of display driver can be triggered as follows:

    • The output of the mode standby
    • Watching a DVD.
    • Playing one of these games: Fallout 3, Bioshock, Team Fortress 2, Knights of the Old Republic.
    • Arbitrarily during the normal work. A normal working day, the problem occurs at least once.

    Other issues

Here are several questions that seem to be related. More information can be found in other posts in this thread:

    • The laptop screen or external monitor works at a low resolution after the release of the standby mode.
    • After the connection, both monitors flicker when the screen resolution setting.
    • External monitors can be activated using Presentation Director.
    • The external monitor is empty after the connection or disconnection.
    • There are a few reports on the accidents of display driver on computers running Windows XP.
    • Switchable graphics drivers more than 2.5 GB RAM usable under Vista 32 (or 500 MB - 1 GB less than usual).

    Workarounds

Lenovo has released a new "trick" document that provides a link to a new driver. Get it here , but be sure to read the instructions!

(Old advice follow below the line. Think of them as obsolete.)

    ---

Here are some tips that could make the problem happen less often. I have not tried all the. However, a. and b. have improved the situation for me; your mileage may vary.

    A. Si you don't have to use an external monitor, then move to the Intel graphics card for now.

    Otherwise:

    B. make a few changes to your system:

    • Disable Aero.
    • Create a new profile in the Manager of power supply with the following parameter: when running on AC, turn off the screen after 40 minutes. (And therefore, the laptop less frequently between standby mode.)
    • Install the latest graphics drivers.
    • Install the newest BIOS.
    • Install the latest Hotkey utility.
    • Install the latest drivers.

    C. disable switchable graphics in the BIOS setup and install the drivers from ATI modded (see zilla poster in this thread for instructions).

The last solution (c.) has been confirmed to work reliably by several users. However, as a result, you use drivers that have not been tested by Lenovo. It is possible (but not likely) that damage the results by doing so. In addition, it may be difficult to install a Lenovo driver that solves the problems reported here. Finally, you cannot use the energy saving Intel graphics. Thus, you must use this workaround only if you know what you're doing.

The programs can be downloaded from the following locations. Note that update system not always immediately offers you the latest versions.

To post a question to the community recently, my system 'auto-sauvé' my post that I wrote it.  When I finished and click on 'POST', he says that you are not allowed to create or update this content!  Seriously?

The system is configured to disconnect after a period of inactivity (about 30 minutes). This is for security reasons. So, if it took you a while to compose or you walked between the two, then Yes, it is quite possible. We all experience. • memory day problems post 10.11.6?

In the last days, safari has been giving me the BBOD, and crashing several times a day. Less critical (but hey, it's a holiday weekend) lies in the fact that I can't play the games (minecraft) because the application continues to run out of memory, despite the fact that I have 32 GB of ram. There is a process of kernel running at the level of the root that starts normally, but then the spikes to use all available memory (less than 2 GB to 18 GB - Yes gigabytes is - and all applications must be suspended at this time).

Does anyone else have problems of memory after this last update? I don't think it's a coincidence that safari, memory and kernel of processes are involved in updates and my problems, but I am not an expert. Anyone have any ideas?
