Want: restoring files

You had to restore factory. First saved all my files. Installed the files that are now on my desktop in a folder. I open them, but that the reference to for example photoshop there are photoshop files but not the actual program itself! Same thing with Word of amd Gimp etc... could someone help please?

OK and thanks again. I understand a little better now. Well that it brings me to the idea that the backup of your files for the purpose of maintaining/backup the contents of your PC before a restore to factory for the incompetent is a waste of time and perhaps the PC peeps should indicate this... or maybe they did somewhere in the depths of talk and we, striped poor panic PC users, have not picked up

Thanks again for your time Hüffer

  • Restore files, backup created using Vista, you try to restore using XP

I've known a failuren hard drive on my laptop running Vista Ultimate.  I have a backup on an external hard drive.

I'm still hoping that I can recover data from faulty hard disk, but it doesn't look promising.

In the meantime, I'm trying to restore the backup files using my previous laptop, which is running XP.  When I try to select the files to restore by using the backup/restore application, it can't find all the appropriate files.  He seems to want a file with an extension "BKF", but I can't find the external hard disk.

    Any suggestions?

  • Put the files in the trash, empty the trash, and then doing some other stuff, and then when I couldn't find the files again, I reinstalled windows vista... now I need/want these files

I sent files to the trash, and then I emptied the trash, and then realized that I only need/want these files, so I went to look for them, then screwed up everything while doing so somehow a shortcut on my desktop, then I put in the disc to reboot/reinstall the entire system windows vista... can we recover these items , or they are gone forever?

I don't know what kind to reinstall you did.  If it was a repair/upgrade, you may be in better shape (fact he preserve your data and programs after the re - install - then you have made the right kind of re - install).

If you did a reinstall to repair/upgrade and if you have Vista Business, Vista Ultimate or Vista Enterprise, you can be lucky.  They have so-called saves shadow copies, which are deleted or modified files that can be recovered in case changes/deletions made by mistake.  http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/Windows-Vista/features/shadow-copy.aspx more information about how to use this feature to: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/howdoi/?p=145.

If you have Vista Basic or Premium of Vista, shadow copies is not available; However, there is an alternative that is free and the shadow copies feature called Shadow Explorer. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/recover-files-with-shadow-copies-on-any-version-of-windows-vista/.  Although it will not help you this time, it could very well save you in case this happens again.

If this does not work, here are a few free recovery programs that might help (if you did a lot for the system, because the files have been deleted, then chances are that less as they might otherwise be - see notes below):

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/freeware/system/fwdatarecovery.html (first try Recuva)

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/DiskDigger.html

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/easusdfr.html

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/restoration.html

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/downloads/Recuva/dlrecuva.html

    http://www.SoftPerfect.com/products/FileRecovery/

    http://techpaul.WordPress.com/2008/06/23/how-to-recover-your-lost-files/

The files are not really deleted until they are crushed (although they are no longer available through conventional methods).  If you decide to try these recovery programs, you should stop using your drive hard immediately in order not to replace the data that you are trying to recover.  He slave on another PC and launch the recovery of this PC.  Even now you have definitely lost some of them if you use the same PC.  If you can not do this (slave on another PC), you run the risk of overwriting the data with every action you do on the PC (but you may still be able to recover some or most or even all files - it's a matter of luck).  The fact that you did a re - install is not good for what is successful, - but it's worth a try.

Only you can decide if the data is important enough to take the PC to an expert data recovery to recover files (they will have better programs and hardware to do that none of us do, and I've provided above).  Do NOT go to the Geek Squad or one of these centers of store-, they generally don't know what they are doing - it take for expert data recovery.  It will cost you a little and they generally offer no guarantees.  The decision is yours.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

  • Restoring files of Simplesave

I'm trying to restore files after a system on my Windows 7, HP Simplesave system recovery (I think 500).   It is said in the online manual, double-click the hp simplesave icon in the system tray.   The Simplesave unit is connected with the screening of blue light but I do not see the icon in the systray.

    Hello ghoppa6,

The SimpleSave reader should be strong when you connect the USB cable to the computer. If this isn't the case, then AutoPlay can be disabled in Win - 7 and perhaps you want to re-inable it. http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/Change-AutoPlay-settings#1TC=Windows-7

Meanwhile, I open the external drive and find the SimpleSave folder and inside should be a folder called HPSimpleSave. Double-click it to start the program, then you can set up the restore of your files.

How to restore files lost on windows 8

    Hi Ed,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I imagine the inconvenience that you are experiencing and will certainly help you in the right direction to solve the problem. However, I would be grateful if you could answer a few questions to refine the question in order to provide you with better assistance.

    1. You have deleted the files you want to recover?
    2. Did you recently upgraded your system to Windows 8?
    3. What exactly happened which made lose files?

If you have lost files, there are some steps that can help you recover them. Historical files regularly backup versions of your files in Documents, music, photos, videos and office files and OneDrive files available offline on your PC. Over time, you will have a complete history of your files. If the originals are lost, damaged or deleted, you can restore them. See the following article for assistance.

Restore files or folders by using the history file

If, however, you reset, refresh, or reinstall Windows, your personal files are temporarily stored in the Windows.old folder for 28 days (unless you have formatted your hard disk before install). If you decide to part or all of these files, you can usually recover from this folder. So, I suggest to refer to the following article and check if it helps.

Retrieve files from the Windows.old folder

Hope this information is useful. Let us know if you need more help, we will be happy to help you.
