Way to hide certain virtual machines on a common host networks?

I hope it's one of those moments "duh" and there is an easy solution.

Let says I have two clusters.  One of the piles is a lab with a copy of Active Directory environment used for testing purposes.  This cluster is now in a cycle of life, and I want to merge with the production cluster and remove former hosts of ESXi lab.  We add laboratory for the cluster of production networks and all is well for the laboratory of virtual machines that are not migrated on him.

However, we do not want someone to accidentally assign a production VM to a network of laboratories and vice versa.  So when you go into edit a virtual machine, and then select the NETWORK card, there is a drop-down list that displays all the networks, including new laboratory that were just added networks.  I want to hide the network of laboratories of our production domain controllers and hide our production networks where the laboratory domain controllers.  But because they are all on the same cluster, it seems to me that all subnets are fair game for select in the drop-down list.  Or am I wrong?  Is there a way to lock the network to only certain virtual machines so that they do not show up for other virtual machines to choose?

Thank you and sorry if there is an obvious solution to what I am about.

SB

Hey SB,.

Not sure if this is possible, to be honest, as a virtual machine are all port groups, that it has the right. Now that I think of it, maybe create two different groups of seggregating production and test/lab put in place might work because you would not be able to connect to a virtual computer on a cluster to a portgroup on a host.

Names must be different, but otherwise you could see similar across clusters names if the port groups may be two different entities altogether. Other than that, can't really invent any scenerios in which a portgroup wouldn't appear on a virtual machine if it is present on a host

  • Best way to migrate virtual machines to new ESXi hosts with a different configuration of networking.

We currently have a cluster of 6 Dell machines that move VM 120 or so on ESXi 5.5. Networking consists of a dVswitch with 6 uplinks that map to 6 x 1gig physical NETWORK adapters on each host ESXi... These are grouped into 3 trunks / gal, so we have 2 GB by SHIFTING of the bandwidth and failover. The LAGS are configured as follows:

    LAG1

Traffic to our (NFS) shared data store and management of ESXi. (vmk0)

    LAG2

Access to the network of the VM - groups of different ports on different VLANS

    LAG3

    vMotion (vmk1)

We just bought 6 new Dell machines that have connections fiber 2 x 10gig each. The idea is to bring together in a 20Ggig LAG by machine that will handle all of the traffic, so traffic NFS data store, network traffic from the VM, vMotion and traffic management ESXi.

What is the best way to migrate the virtual machine in the cluster existing to the new machines? Many of the virtual machine are essential, so we cannot stop time.

Can I create the new DELAY on existing dVswitch and put it as an auxiliary card? I'll be able to do it for all 3 of the above both above LAGS?

Thanks for the info Alistar, it's almost here. The bit that was me stumping was that after establishing a new dVswitch I received messages that the new dvSwitch was not reachable on the old host, when I tried to migrate the virtual computer.

The solution (with the permission of VMware Support) was that I need to add the two dVswitches to one of the old hosts, then assign a physical alternative on this host uplink to a temporary 3 uplink on the new dVswitch. I then tag all the relevant VLAN that uplink.

This way I can first migrate the virtual machine to the new dVswitch networking so I can move the computer to the new cluster.

Obviously I can only migrate from old to new cluster with a single host. each virtual machine must be a double for the host with 2 switches, and then to the new cluster. I also had to have the two dVswitches to the same version.

Fortunately, I had a physical rising spare on the hosts of the old, otherwise I would have had to break one of the trunks and re-use of one of these uplinks.

Oh and be aware, impossible to use the same names for groups of ports 2 DV switches, they must be unique!

  • Best way to move a virtual machine to new hardware

I have a SBS 2011 VMS under ESXi 5.  The material is not enough and performance are slowed down.  I want to spend the SBS 2011 VMS to new hardware.  After install ESXi on the new hardware, which is the best way to move the virtual machine.  It's big enough, and it is a production server - I'm looking for fast and efficient.  What are the most common problems when moving from a virtual computer to new hardware?  Thank you!

A virtual machine is encapsulated in a set of files, making it easy to carry; You can copy the files from the virtual machine using WinSCP or any other program to the destination host. Register the vmx on the new host and turn on the virtual machine. You may also look @ of Veeam FastSCP for this purpose. I have not had the chance to use it yet, but it's free and seems very popular with the community:

With the Virtual Machine off, right-click in the Virtual Machine library and select: remove VM disk

  • What is the best way to backup of virtual machines on a standalone ESX with the data store local

    Hello

I want to save the virtual machines on a host ESX autonomous. and all of these virtual machines is the local data store.  What is the best way to save these virtual machines in this situation?

And probably we don't provision VTL on the local data center, so it is possible to use VCB to backup? And VCB is a good choice compared to the traditional method that installs the backup client in each virtual machine?   Because I think that in this situation with the data store local, it cannot not reduced the load on ESX hosts and network overhead can be avoided.

    Thank you!

    LAN

    > 1. VCB usable remote tape library? I mean it's not local library and uses the tape library to another network data center.

VCB is completely unrelated to the tape library, it is a framework, not a backup solution. If your standard backup software can work with the remote tape library you can try it to ungrateful with VCB.

    > 2. what the difference bwteen hot - added NBD and modes if there is that an ESX host with store data local and want to use a virtual machine like VCB proxy? I think that they are the same: the VCB proxy read data through the I/O of the ESX host stack in this situation.

NBD works on network and the backup traffic goes through the service console connection. Hot add uses special machine for assistance to connect vmdk to and uses of e/s disk stack instead of e/s network.

    > 3. Veeam Backup is free software?

    No, it isn't.

  • Filter certain virtual machines of notification of UNIFIED messaging?

We have usage screen v3.3.3. By default, it reports on all the virtual machines managed by the vCenter on which it is installed. I want to filter according to the report, the following types of virtual machines:

    -Models

    -Turning off VMs

    -To test virtual machines

To facilitate this, I moved all the virtual machines that match in one of the above categories in a folder called "non-production". But after reading the user's guide, I don't see how to exclude this folder from notification of UNIFIED Messaging.

Is this possible? Furthermore, if this method is not possible, is there another method by which I can achieve this?

    Thanks in advance.

So let's see how we can go about this...

First of all, virtual computers that are turned off and models (always off) are not being measured in the unit of vCLUM if you do not have to worry about them.

Regarding testing of virtual machines, what business reason do you exclude those of vCLUM reports? Basically, as long you have licensed vCAN applied to an ESXi host and each virtual machine running on the host of such should be dosed in vCLUM and reported on.

If you have a test environment, you need to be perpetual or demo licenses applied to the ESXi hosts supporting the test environment. Then you can go into your web portal of vCLUM at the location indicated below (categories of licenses/billing) and change the category of billing for license key demo / perpetual listed accordingly. With this method, you will be able to prevent the virtual machines, you want to be included in your monthly usage reports.

    I hope this helps!

  • Replicate a virtual machine between an Intel host computer and an AMD

Does anyone has experiences with using vSphere replication to replicate a virtual machine between Intel server cluster and a cluster of servers AMD?

I asked myself this question the other day and unfortunately I have Intel hosts in my lab to test/demo so can not perform checks...

I know that the only safe way to migrate a virtual machine from one host to Intel to a host of AMD is to use migration cold (ie the power off of the virtual computer), but that also applies if you use replication as a tool of "migration."

I am aware vSphere replication can occur only if the source THAT VM is turned on, as it will make a copy of the initial/seed and then use CBT for replication of the changes... but because the goal of VM is turned off, I am correct in assuming that it is a form of "cold migration"?

It works with the solution of Veem replication with VMware hosts.

    Reference:replication requirements. See the topic

It seems to even work with Hyper V - replica.

Hyper-V R2 2012 replica from INTEL to AMD? -Spiceworks

In my view, this works for vSphere same replication as well. However, I will stay here with confirmation.

  • Get the list of virtual machines on an ESX host specific and dumping of .csv in a specific format

I have problems to find a way to get a list of virtual machines on an ESX host specific and then he dumped to a .csv in the following format

    I use the get-vmhost esxhostname | Get - vm

but everyhting else after, it is where I am lost...  I think the closest I had been posting the output with a goofy header and format 'vm1, vm2, vm3 "...

    name

    computer 1 name

    computer 2 name

    name of the machine 3

to use for later use.  Any help would be appreciated.

You must use the Select-Object cmdlet to specify more precisely the properties you want.

The Export-Csv doesn't know how to manage the virtual computer object.

    Something like that

    Get-vmhost esxhostname | Get - vm | Select name. Export Csv.\report.csv - NoTypeInformation - UseCulture

  • List of virtual machines on an ESX host

Is there a method in the sdk that lists all the virtual machines on an esx host?

Simply get a reference to a HostSystem and it has an array property called vm http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk400pubs/ReferenceGuide/vim.HostSystem.html that gives you a reference to a matrix to all virtual machines on this particular host.

Here is a sample Perl script that shows how to retrieve all the virtual machines for a specific host and certain attributes of the VM: getAllVMGuestHostname.pl

  • To access the virtual machines of two different hosts

    Greetings,

I have a question that I can't find the answer to. I am setting up a virtual machine environment small and need to better understand the architecture behind it.

    2 host servers

    1 iSCSI Equallogic San (target)

I have installed 35i ESX and runnning on two physical hosts. .205 et.206

I created a data store on my SAN to host my 'model' VM.

De.205, I can see the data on the SAN network store and browse the virtual machine I (using VMConverter) moved there.

De.206, I can see the data store on the SAN, but when I sail, I do not see the same information. I see no. VM.

MY understanding is that using the SAN to store the virtual machine and that I would make the hosts of this data store to run the virtual machine. But the way in which it seems that I have the virtual machine configured on both hosts, always pointing the data store on the San but again using converter, copy de.205 vers.206.

What don't understand me or that I don't understand.

    Your help is appreciated.

Welcome to the VMware community forums.   If you have configured things Ok, you will be able to browse the data from these two hosts store and see the same content.  You can register the virtual computers on both hosts.  For an existing VM on the host from 1, you find the data on the host of the 2nd store, right-click on the VMX file and select Add to the inventory.  Have you thought to vcenter server?  It's going to do it is a lot easier.

  • How do I create standard vSwitches in a HA cluster where the virtual machine switches to the same network?

I have a lab put in place with 2 hosts 5.5 ESXi and vCenter.  I want to create a situation where each virtual machine must have a dedicated network card.  If I create vSwitchABC on host 1, what should I do on host 2?  Create vSwitchABC on that host too and connect it to the same physical switch?  Which will allow the host 1 failure and the virtual machine to arrive on host 2 on the network because the same vSwitch names?

    Thank you!

Welcome to the community-Yes, you need to create a vswitch on host 2 has a virtual machine port group with the same name on host 1 connection on the same subnet as connected to the host - 1

  • What is the interval of time between the virtual machine Linux and ESXi host synchronization?

I have ESX5.0 with a centos6 installed on this linux virtual machine.

After the installation of vmware for Linux virtual machine tools, I activated the time synchronization between the virtual machine linux and ESXi host through vmware-toolbox-cmd.

I wonder what is the interval of time between the virtual machine linux and ESXi host synchronization? If I quickly time OS system, when the OS system time will sync back to the ESXi host?

    According to http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/Timekeeping-In-VirtualMachines.pdf:

By default, the demon checks the guest only once per minute operating system clock.

However, depending on whether the guest is behind or in front of the result is different. So, please read the section "periodic synchronization" (at least) in the document mentioned above.

  • Virtual MACHINE running on two hosts after hung vmotion

    Hello

I started a VMotion of virtual machine by host A to host B. The request got hung at 65% for several hours. I restarted the VCenter service, registered to vsphere. The process was running is longer, but now the virtual machine appears on the Host A and host B.

The Cluster-'Virtual Machine' tab displays the virtual machine and cycles between two hosts seconds couple?

Anyone seen this before? How can I fix it? Thanks in advance!

First of all, it's impossible.  A virtual machine cannot be in 2 places at once.  It's just in the transition.

Secondly, vCenter manages the process but it doesn't actually do the vMotion, ESX hosts are.

What is happening is life of the virtual machine on the host only until the end of the evolution towards the other host (somewhere around 97%) when the transfer is confirmed with the new host.

Best thing to do is to restart the services of management on both hosts and see if that frees the vMotion.

  • vSwitch ESXi 5.1 workaround to virtual machines (direct access to the network)

    Hello world!

I have a server running properly the 5.1 ESXi hypervisor and got inside the physical grid active router with DHCP. How can I configure the vSwitch on ESXi 5.1 work not managed on the network, without VLAN and have direct access to the network?

Just to clarify, I would like to first of all virtual machines VMware Workstation works - if it is possible to run several virtual machines and define all NICS (Network Interface Card) as connected by a bridge, that is to say. Each VM gets the specific configurations of IP to the external router.

Since now, thank you very much for the help!

    Best regards

    Eduardo

With ESXi the vSwitches work comparable to Bridged networking, so there is really nothing special to do.
