What is a master password in Windows 7?

I have three teenage sons. To control when they can and can't sign our family computers, I regularly have to change the passwords for their standard user account. However, my eldest son has now found a way to replace the new password I enter and sign on it any time he wants. He told me that he has implemented a "password base" or "master password" that allows him to connect. I noticed that any process it uses Exchange as his password for everything that I may be defined.

Is it possible for a standard user (non-administrator) to create something like a master password? Or is it more likely that he created a password recovery disk somehow? If it has created such a drive, how to disable or prevent signature whenever it wants?

N ° there is no "master password" beyond an administrator account.

Yes. This seems to be a case of him creating a password reset disk ".".

As far as I know, it is not possible to disable this feature and it's by design.

    Hi Ned,.

You could well be right.  Same good software can corrupt to be on the system for some time.

If you can open the software at all, Please do an export of your webcards before you reinstall / repair software SimplePass.

    Export the Webcard database:

If you have working software SimplePass, export your Webcards before proceeding.  In the case where you must remove the SimplePass software, your webcard backup can be used (imported) to restore your Web site login information.

Start SimplePass > parameters > export NOTE: file will be called *.tsd

    • Restart the system,
    • Log in with your password,
    • Start the software SimplePass

Hello DawnC, what you could do in this case is to manually delete the password in your profile folder: go to firefox > help > troubleshooting information, click on file/show profile folder and close all firefox windows later. a windows Explorer window should open - delete or rename files named signons.sqlite (and if all other files of text beginning by sign) & signons3.txt - they will be regenerated the next time you start the browser again.

  • Someone has put a master password in my Firefox without my permission, how to erase it if I don't know what it is?

A few days back somebody, more than probably one of my children put a master password in my Firefox browser. Now I can not connect in my crosshairs pay Bill or anything else, as he continues to ask me a master password that nobody seems to know what is. Is there a way to clean that? If so, how? I rather not completely it blow and start over.

Thanks for your attempts to help, but I could finally understand what the kids had done. He ended up not being that they have changed or entered one. The problem stems from the bar one of them was installed, after I deleted it I managed to enter a master password and recover all without losing all my passwords saved a tool. I learned something from that however, I now have a copy of my signons3.txt file saved someplace safe, so if something happens in the future I have a copy backup.

  • Downloaded Firefox to my computer. He installed a master password and I have no idea what it is. Any suggestions?

This morning, I downloaded Firefox to my desktop. He asked the master password whenever I have a site where I have to enter my password. I don't know what it could be because I did not have a master password and he asked one during installation. I tried to turn it off, but it does not work because you must enter the password. Does anyone have suggestions on what to do other than go back to Internet Explorer, which I prefer not to do?

Had never installed before Firefox? If so, your new installation picked a former framework. Otherwise, hmmm, very strange.

If you do not want Firefox to save connections, you can disable it and that should eliminate the prompt for the password.

Orange Firefox button or classic menu Tools > Options > Security

    Uncheck "Remember passwords for sites"

If you do want Firefox to store connections, you will need to clear the master password. This will remove the connections already registered. The following article has the steps to do this: I forgot my master password. Troubleshooting | Firefox Help.

  • I used a master password for years. Today, I noticed that it had been authorized. What could cause this?

I used a master password for years. I also use Sync. Today, I wanted to watch one of my saved passwords. When I went to do this, I noticed that Firefox was no longer is configured to use a master password. I'm afraid I can have been hacked, or that something is is past (recent update Firefox?) which caused the use of the master password will be disabled.

I have not yet checked my other computers synced to see if their master password has been disabled.

I have re-enabled the functionality of password on this computer.

On this particular computer, I had a long-standing issue date where Firefox ' help > about Firefox "still says I need to"restart to update. This means that I can't use "help > about Firefox ' to check and install the latest version. I need to download Firefox manually and update by running the installation program.

If the files have already been downloaded, then delete the files in the folder updates\0 and updates.

You can also remove active - update.xml, or even updates.xml (this will clear the update history).

    Hello

Refresh (called "Reset" in older versions of Firefox) can solve a lot of problems in restaurant Firefox as his default factory while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose all the extensions, toolbar customizations, and certain preferences. See article Firefox Refresh - reset modules and parameters for more information.

    Refresh for Firefox:

    1. Open the troubleshooting information page using one of the following methods:

      • Click the menu button

        click Help

and select troubleshooting information. Should open a new tab containing your troubleshooting information.

      • If you are unable to access the Help menu, type Subject: support in your address bar to bring up the troubleshooting information page.
    2. At the top right of the page, you should see a button that says 'Refresh Firefox' ('reset Firefox' in older versions of Firefox). Click on it.
    3. Firefox closes. Once the update process is complete, Firefox will display a window with the imported information.
    4. Click Finish and reopen Firefox.

This corrects the problem? Please report to us!

    Thank you.

  • Mail master password hidden

Why Thunderbird does not create a master password that hid everything in boxes to the letters?

    Thank you very much, Matteo.

I answered a similar question yesterday and some of what I wrote then can apply to you also:

    https://support.Mozilla.org/en-us/questions/1034630

Specifically for the protection of the entire profile, you can find the extension useful StartupMaster:

    https://addons.Mozilla.org/en-us/Thunderbird/addon/StartupMaster/

It is perhaps not obvious from the description, but once installed, the first thing you see is a connection password prompt, and only when that has been entered correctly the main Thunderbird window appears.

Keep in mind that, since it is implemented by an add-on, a user can easily circumvent the password challenge, and in all cases, your emails are stored in plain text and can be discovered by anyone by browsing your file system.

Thunderbird developers chose not to reinvent the wheel; If you are concerned about prvacy, they assumed that the users use the tools built into the operating system; user accounts, logins, passwords and encrypted file systems.

  • security breach critical firefox? does not require master password

I put with a master password in firefox. When I start the computer and firefox, it opens the browser to the way I saved him when I stopped. This includes the sites that require passwords. They all open with no password request. Then randomly at a time later asked me the master password. Shouldn't it ask the password first, before opening protected sites?

    It's a little complicated.

If you allow sites to set persistent cookies to keep you logged between sessions, Firefox never needs to use your password saved; you are already on each visit to both Firefox keeps the cookie (weeks, months or years depending on what the site specified).

Alternatively, if you limit the sites to the definition of session cookies, after you close Firefox, these cookies are normally deleted. But there is an exception for the windows and tabs you left pending.

When you restore a previous session, Firefox reverts this session cookies, including those you kept connected sites. Secure sites (HTTPS) are treated differently depending on when you restore your session:

    • When Firefox is set to start automatically with windows and tabs: secure session cookies are maintained and restored. Your registered username is unnecessary and not used.
    • When Firefox is set to start at the top with a home page, and you have the ability to restore your previous session manually: secure session cookies are ignored. You will need to identify yourself again.

So, if (1) allow you sites to set persistent cookies, or (2) have set to restore your previous session of Firefox, and you do not close the session, it would be normal that no logon is required when revisiting the secured sites.

To make sure that this does not happen, you have a few different options:

    (1) use only session cookies AND change some hidden settings to ensure that they are not saved when your session is restored; or

    (2) delete all cookies at the stop.

I can list for those steps if you are interested.
