What is EFI boot

What is EFI boot (in BIOS)? I have a HP Compaq Elite 8200 - SFF - 1 x Core.

Hi, Peter:

I think you need to boot from the hard drive to the heritage selection.

I've never really played with mine.  I turn it on and use it.

The only time that I ever tried to start another source was the DVD and I had to select Legacy to go.

I recommend that you visit one of the manuals as the service manual on the support page and 8200 driver.

It can provide the info that you are looking for - expecially under the section of the manual on the BIOS setup guide.

  • Add SSD to EFI boot

    Hello

I just got my HPE Pavillio h8-1320 and a SSD drive shipped separately so that the OS on the SSD instead of HARD drive included.

After some fiddling, I managed to install the OS on my SSD-, but also want to keep it on the HARD drive as preinstalled for awhile.

Problem is that I'm not able to get the pc to boot from SSD without forcing from the BIOS (i.e. the menu setup at boot)

I found the "problem" with the EFI - what is totally new to me

SO the question is - how can I add my new SSD to the EFI stuff?

I read on the EFI Boot Manager, which seems to be an interface for editing - but where is it is, or not at all?

With regard to UEFI / EFI I am a newbie, to get detailed instructions are needed...

    -pw-

Recovery discs were burned on the original HARD disk recovery partition, but these were of no use to me. None of them are identified as OS disk - they are labelled only 1 to 5 - and I have no idea how to do to actually retrieve anything using them. None (?) of the DVD recovery are bootable, which means I can't use them on a fresh SSD (at least I can't figure out how)

Software image used cloning EasyUS Partition Master Home/Free version 9.1.1, which is well spoken from around the internet. EasyUS have served me much earlier then fiddling around with partitions

In any case: I spent a few hours last night in a final (?) attempt.

Here is my solution, which seems to work.

Note! This solution requires a bootable Win7 DVD

I started with both my original HDD and my new SSD connected.

Boot from the HARD drive (with functional operating system)

EasyUS Partition Master to remove all partitions on my SSD and set GPT disk type

Stop PC, disconnect the HARD disk (swapped taken SATA SSD where the HARD drive was (probably not necessary - but I did))

    Insert the Win7 DVD

Start the PC, press ESC to access the menu, select UEFI DVD-rom as an alternative of boot (important because no UEFI will not install on a GPT disk)

Whwn installation asks where install (disc) (and give warning that Windows cannot be installed on the SSD) press SHIFT + F10 for the command prompt

    Type DISKPART

    Type LIST DISK

Type SELECT DISK n (where n is the number of the SSD)

Type CREATE PARTITION EFI SIZE = 102

Type CREATE PARTITION MSR SIZE = 32

    Type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

    OUTPUT type

    OUTPUT type

You are now at the windows installation, press refresh to update the disk information, and you will see the new created partitions

Select the primary partition for installing Win7

Complete the Win7 installation as usual

    Stop PC

Connect the original HARD drive to SATA-socket

Reboot the PC and crossed our fingers to fix the OS to start (fact OK with me9

(If 'old' OS (HDD) boots, stop PC, reboot, press ESC, then select SSD (or most likely) under the UEFI boot options)

This IS - the SSD and HDD are now running in a UEFI interface

Missing system drivers on SSD OS are found on the HARD drive

When all drivers are migrated, OS HARD disk partition can be wiped and HARD drive can be used for data

For one SSD optimized operation, check that the FITTINGS and disk defragmentation are set properly (many articles on internet)

Now, finally, I'am a happy camper!

  • EFI boot ROM update problem

I have a MacBook Pro 8.1 end of 2011. I'm updating the EFI boot ROM. There are currently on an old version, MBP81.0047.B2C. Later I can find is MBP81.0047.2AB since the Mac EFI security update 2015-001. I tried to install this rom to boot, but it will not be installed. The update requires 10.8.5 to 10.9.5 but I'm on El Capitan now. I have to go all downgrade procedure first to be able to update the EFI boot ROM and then move on to El Cap again?

You could create a small partition of 20 GB on your HARD drive, get a copy of the full install on a small partition Mavericks Installer. You should be able to re - download the Mavericks since the purchase of your App Store page assuming you got it from the App Store in the past. If this isn't the case, then you are out of luck, unless you can find help at your local Apple store.

  • What windows and Boot Camp for MBP 13 end 2011

I have a MBP 13 end 2011. I want to install Windows 8.1 to launch my CAD software. I use Boot Camp Assistant 6. I run on OS X and have 4 GB of ram. Is this ok or are there other options recommended?

Models 13 inches have the GPU from Intel. Your Mac has an Intel HD3K. Older versions of the software may perform better, but more recent versions can be slower on older hardware. What is the possibility of using a dual-GPU MBP? The more RAM, the better it is.

  • EFI Boot Manager

How can I activate the Boot Manager (EFI) of a Lion VM Guest under 4.1.1? I need start the virtual machine from a CD of emergency repair.

The 'option' key is supposed to bring up the Boot Manager to select a drive, but is not for me. Or press 'C' to boot from the CD (or escape) drive.

Hi sbgand welcome to the VMware communities!

The right way to enter the Boot Manager EFI for a guest of Lion on the 4.x merger is to hold the Option key when the virtual computer is powered.

The whole process must be done quickly, the following:

    1. Turn on the virtual machine
    2. Click in the virtual machine window so that the mouse pointer disappears.  This causes the virtual machine to 'capture' the keyboard input.
    3. Press and hold down the Option key.

You must have the hold Option key while the VMware boot screen is visible, you don't have to be fast enough.

Once you are in the EFI main menu, choose Startup Manager and you will see a list of devices that the virtual machine can be started.  You should see the CD/DVD selectionnez_ player the and press ENTER to boot from it.

Since he is a guest of Lion, another option that you can consider is to use the HD Recovery which includes the lion on the hard disk of the virtual computer.  To do this, just turn it on, quickly click in the virtual computer window and hold down command + R instead of down option (even once, you must do this while the VMware boot screen is visible), and it should boot into the recovery of Lion environment.

    See you soon,.

  • Equium A60 BIOS update: what is the Boot Mode?

Due to problems with my graphics ATI I have to do a BIOS update. To do my computer (Equium A60 PSA67E) apparently needs to be in mode 'start-up', NOT 'repeat mode '. In a previously sent forum somebody said the computer just "should be turned off" but I'm still not sure of how go to this mode. Is it just a case to go to the start menu, click on shut down the computer and turn off the computer again? But how do you know when it is in mode 'start '?
Question: How do in boot mode? (I tried the update in 'safe' mode and it does not work)

    Hello

Boot mode is meaning stop the laptop (BONE).
It is important that the laptop is not in stand mode or hibernation mode.
You just simply close the unit. That s all ;)

Welcome to the HP Forums, it's a great place to get help, find answers and advice,
Thanks for posting your request, I'll be more than happy to help you

If I understand correctly you want to use the trunk legacy rather than the UEFI boot, before getting into the details, however,

Here is the difference between Boot EFI and start-up of the legacy

This is the process used by the firmware to find the target of starting:

Legacy boot is used by the firmware BIOS boot process.
The firmware keeps a list of installed storage devices can be bootable (Floppy Disk Drives, hard drives, optical drives, tape drives, etc.) and list them in a configurable priority. the POST procedure has finished, the firmware loads the first sector of each target of memory storage and it scans for a valid Master Boot Record (MBR). If a valid MBR is found, the firmware passes execution of code found in the MBR, bootloader that allows the user to select a partition to boot from. If we don't get, it proceeds to the following equipment in the boot order. If no MBR is found at all, the user is presented with the famous "Please insert system disk".

UEFI boot is used by the UEFI firmware boot process.
Firmware maintains a list of volumes of valid boot called EFI Service of Partitions. During the POST firmware procedure UEFI scans all bootable storage devices that are connected to the system for a valid GPT GUID Partition Table (). Unlike a MBR, a GPT does not contain a boot loader. The firmware itself scanning the closure for a score of Service EFI to boot from. If no boot EFI partition is found, the firmware can fall back on the boot of the legacy method. If boot UEFI and legacy boot fail, the famous "Insert system disk" will be presented.

In general, the UEFI boot is more desirable.

And if you want to know how to convert a GPT to MBR or convert MBR to GPT disk: click here (3rd party link - please ignore the ads).

  • Loses satellite P845t-107 - menu of EFI Linux boot entries

    Hello!

I just tried to create a new boot EFI menu entry.
Unfortunately, the UEFI configuration has such an option.

So I used efibootmgr (14.04 Kubuntu).
After you have created such an entry, it works exactly once. While the entry is lost.

How can I create a permanent EFI boot entry to start another installation of operating system than the one supplied?

    TIA

    Notting

    Hello

I found some details about efibootmgr.
    > Due to bugs in efibootmgr and/or implementations of EFI, efibootmgr does not always work.

Someone said that there is a bug in efibootmgr (bug in the 2013.04.01 Installer) and one of the possible solutions is a start using the 2013.03.01 old version

But I guess that's a bad place take on efibootmgr issues.
In my opinion you should visit some places of Linux support / forums to talk about other possible solutions.

  • Recovery HD displayed as Boot EFI to start (option)

When I select boot option at startup, two named icons are displayed, namely:

    (1) Andromeda (internal boot drive) and Boot EFI (2).

When I select Boot EFI system starts in recovery mode.

The 'Diskutil list"command in Terminal displays the following result:

    / dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

    #: NAME SIZE TYPE IDENTIFIER

    0: GUID_partition_scheme * GB 121,3 disk0

    1: disk0s1 EFI EFI 209.7 MB

    2: Apple_HFS Andromède 120.5 GB disk0s2

    3: disk0s3 Apple_Boot Recovery 650.0 MB HD

Is there a method to rename 'EFI Boot' in the list start as "Recovery HD" option?

    Thank you for your comments.

No, this is the name commonly given when, for some reason, the HD recovery did not work. Of course, you can repartition the drive and start again using the recovery network.

    Hi iawelch,

Try changing the type of OS asked for a 64-bit flavor.  Several operating with the support of the EFI systems are only including a 64-bit EFI bootloader, not 32-bit.

I have not tried the front Arch Center EFI support, so let us know if that gets it going for you!
