When Lightroom stores catalogs, previews and backups?

1. by default, where he stores LR:

a. catalog (.lrcat)

b. previews (.lrdata)

c. backups catalogues and previews

2 can change these locations?

2. If so, how one specifies where LR will store each of the foregoing?

3. is there a specific location, the catalogue, the preview relationship and backups, or any partial combination of these three, should stay in?

3. If so, what are the relations that/those?

(a) by default in the Lightroom folder in my pictures / photos

(b) in the same folder as the catalog

(c) everywhere where tell you him - which should be somewhere different. No backup previews.

Re 2, simply move the catalog in Explorer / Finder, double click on it. If you move the previews, LR begins a new one in the same folder as the catalog, then (b) above.

Re 3, answered above. Backups can / must be somewhere else and it's your choice where.

Note that in the catalog settings there is a button display that reveals where is your catalog.

  • How install CC Photoshop and Lightroom does affect my current catalogs, previews and caches?

I'll subscribe to the Adobe Creative cloud photography Plan. How can I keep (import?) and use my current catalogs, previews and caches of my current installation of Lightroom? Or will I have to start again once installed the new version of Lightroom CC?

If you are currently using Lightroom 5 then switch to the creative cloud is really simple. There are those who say that it is not necessary to move to Lightroom downloaded from the creative cloud. But I did it. I use Windows, so I used the standard uninstall process to uninstall my standalone Lightroom. Then I installed Lightroom from the creative cloud. Once the installation is complete there is an icon for Lightroom (just like the other because it's the same program) on my desk. I double clicked on the icon and Lightroom opens the same catalog I used everything I had done before was still in place. You see, the catalogue and the previews and all other files are user files generated by Lightroom on your computer. But they are not part of the Lightroom program. So removing the Lightroom program does nothing to your catalog, previews or the preview cache. It is precisely the same program. This is just a license differently.

If you use Lightroom 4 then 5 Lightroom you will find the catalog you used and invite you to allow him to create an updated copy of it that is consistent with the new database format. It is no different than the upgrade of the stand-alone version. So the short answer is that you should not lose all your work of switching.

  • LR has been impossible to export the catalog previews and negative

My first post in this forum.  I want to delete all of my iMac to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard and then charge back.  First job is to "Export as catalog" all my photos (about 6000) since the Mac to an external hard drive (Maxtor OneTouch 4Plus, 450 GB of available).  I tried 6 or 7 times and each time getting a similar message - see line object.  I deleted unnecessary files, managed to get rid of unused keywords and exported 2000 odd of my previous pictures in JPEG format to archive in order to reduce the volume.  I reloaded LR and updated to 2.6.  In the export dialog box, I ticked 'Export negative files' and 'include available Previews.  Export gets to about three-quarters of the way through each time until I get the error message and I have to give up.

    Appreciate any assistance.

All THE PHOTOS is included in your LR folder hierarchy?  If this isn't the case, then you must click the right button (or whatever the equivalent of Mac) on one of the folders in your hierarchy of LR and choose to include the Parent folder.  Once you have done this and everything copied, you can file missing just locate on a high back and you will find everything under it.  If you have not the parent folder in LR before copying, you will need to locate the missing files on each of the top-level folders.

Once you have copied your pictures, you can rename your local copy of all THE PHOTOS to make sure that you do not accidentally, and then locate the missing folder to make sure it works on the remote location.

Once you are satisfied with your catalog is to see all distance and when you're ready, copy your catalog and your previews and backup folders above and rename the local copy of the Lightroom to open accidentally this copy of the catalog, even once.  I copy things, instead of moving them, in case something happens, you can start over.

If you immediately update your mac, then copy all three documents, other than iChat ones, pictures on your remote disc and open the remote catalog and find files while missing only one.  I suggest take only pictures, first of all, in case you want to continue to work on the pictures, the local copy of the catalogue will be faster, but if you're ready to upgrade, then simply make all copies at the same time.  All THE PHOTOS and excerpts will be time-consuming copies, catalog, itself, will not take very long.

  • Hardware configuration for the catalog, previews and the RAWs?

    Hi all.

For the past 2 years I've been running a retina 27 "iMac with 512 GB SSD, because it is the essential motivation.

My catalog, previews and RAWs have all been on a connected USB3 SSD 1 TB and backed up with time machine to 2 TB drive HARD USB3.

Now all 3 of my discs are at capacity.

Historically I've shot with a D800 the D810 so the raws were huge. Now, I'm moving to an X - T2.

The easy answer is to move the SSD to 2 TB SSD and the TM drive to a 4 GB ext USB disk, which should buy me a few years.

Maybe another option is to invest in a 4-Bay NAS, stick 4x4gb operates to and use the batch for the backup storage and image TM.

What do you think guys? even if I'm running a processor i7 and 32 GB of RAM, sake still images second or 2 to appear in my current setup, I really don't want them to appear all slower. It was suggested that I could move all the images more than a year on the NAS and keep the catalog, the previews and the latest images on the 1 TB SSD.

Curious to hear other ideas and configurations that work well.

    Thanks in adv.

    Craig

Since you are using a fairly recent Mac she must have a thunderbolt port, otherwise 2 of them and you can also add a USB 3 hub to connect multiple disks to your current configuration. I don't see in adding disks more large and small age of retirement. Just add another 2 disks of the same capacity. You can also get rid of some of the old Time Machine backups to free up space on the drive that you configured for Time Machine.

As far as I KNOW 99% of multiple NAS boxes drive (Bay) are thus set up a RAID array. Which would limit the overall storage capacity of this box.

The LR catalog file must also be on a drive connected directly to the computer and not on a network drive.

  • Delete "Lightroom 5 catalog Previews.lrdata Smart?

My Lightroom folder has a 2.28 GB "Lightroom 5 catalog Previews.lrdata" file and a 10.01 GB file called "Lightroom 5 catalog Smart Previews.lrdata."

"Lightroom 5 catalog Previews.lrdata" file was created on 09/02/13 and amended on 20-11-14.

"5 Smart Previews.lrdata Lightroom Catalog" file was created on 09/03/13 and has never been amended since this date.

The last time that I imported the photos 11/14/14. I did no changes what whether from 20/11/14.

Given that the "5 Lightroom Catalog Previews.lrdata Smart" file has not changed since its inception, I wonder what, if any, it is in service. Delete would free up much of the space, so I want to do if I wouldn't lose something important.

I use PL 5.7 for Mac, in the case where that matters.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

... Previews.lrdata files (not files), are required by Lightroom and should not be deleted. I mean, they peuvent be removed if they cause problems (or they are associated with a catalog obsolete..) and they can or will be recreated, but management is to minimize the storage:

    remove the 1:1 previews, and/or

    remove smart insights

    (using the Lr menu functions)

In addition, if you reduce the size and/or quality of the standard previews (using Lr preferences), then it will be not so great...

That said, some of us just delete these records as a quick dirty way to 'start over' preview-wise...

  • Lightroom 2 catalog previews.lrdata?

I run into the problems of space on my C drive (hard to imagine, but I my computer has been configured before LR and iTunes).  I have moved the music from iTunes to another player, but still need to free up space.  LR use / 3GB in the following location:

    C:\Documents and Settings\ < user > \My Documents\My Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 2 catalog Previews.lrdata

There are less records 0 to 9 and A to F (more a file called miniature - cache.db).  These have in turn their own subfolders.  I can't remove it the entire structure of C:\Documents and Settings\DandJ\My Documents\My Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 2 catalog Previews.lrdata?  What I have to change the preference to have this things overview go to another drive in the future?  My 'Camera Raw Cache Settings' points to another drive, but this doesn't seem to be the same.

I have 3 GB + free for other things (such as defragmentation without having to move stuff back)!

    Thank you.

You can move the "[nomcatalogue] .lrcat" (like LRCAT) file as well as the "[catlogname] Previews.lrdata" (like LRDATA) folder with Windows Explorer to a new location and that's it. Then, you can double-click on the file ".lrcat [nomcatalogue]" and LR should open with her.

  • Can I change when Lightroom stores the backups?

By default, Lightroom stores backups on my startup disk which is a relatively small SSD. I want backups to go to one of my largest auxiliary drives. Currently, I have to manually transfer the backup.

    I have a 6.4 Lightroom on a Mac Pro, running 10.9.5.

When the dialog box appears asking if you want to make a backup of your catalog file, there is an option that allows you to specify the location of the backup.

  • "Lightroom has encountered an error when reading his Max Preview and needs to quit" Please help! (I'm on a desktop HP)

My computer turns off on its own this morning, and now when I bring LR, I get this msg "Lightroom has encountered an error in the reading of his Max Preview and must stop".  I restarted my computer 3 times and I still get this msg.  Can someone please advise (I'm on a desktop HP)

In the folder with your catalog (*.) LrCat file), there is a folder with same name but ending with 'previews. LrData ".

Out of LR, remove the 'previews. LrData"file and let LR create it from scratch. Do not remove anything else.

  • What is the role of the folder "Lightroom 5 catalog Previews.Irdata - can I remove it?  It's a memory hog.  There is a file separate from 5 Lightroom Catalog.

My SSD hard drive has limited space which I use for programs and store various files on external hard drive photos.  I ran into a wall space on the SSD C drive and note that the file above is about 13.2 GB for photo previews k 20 detainees.  Can I delete this file?  What is the impact on LR?

You definitely need the Preview file. You can control the size a bit by choosing more small 1:1 previews. I use the smaller previews because I mainly use the develop module. 1:1 previews offer no advantage in the develop module.

If you store your images on another hard drive, internal or external, you can move your entire folder that contains your catalog folder and insights that drive or another also. All you have to do is then double-click the catalog in its new location to start using Lightroom again.

  • Catalog Previews and catalog in different location?

I apologize if this has been answered before but I tried the research and everything I find info on moving time.

I want to keep my catalog on my SSD, but have the Lightroom Catalog Previews folder on a different drive with more space. Is it still possible?

    William.

    * EDIT *.

I should have mentioned I'm using Lightroom 3.2 on Windows 7 64 bit

    William,

The only way to do it at this point of time use a symbolic link to a directory of previews in another folder.

  • Lightroom has encountered an error when reading a catalog file and must stop smoking.

Since I installed Snow Leopard, I get this error. LR restarts and the catalogue is very well, but I let him turn and come back an hour later and there is the same error.

I checked the file system on my USB key and it is fine. It's a whole new catalog that I created to export a former. I've never had this problem before.

Sorry if this is a double post, I can't seem to find the original post, I thought I did.

Your drive eSata connection should be just fine - if this copy is fine. If you can d/l through which images in a folder on internally, which would be faster and safer than other methods via a USB port. I don't think that LR cares about the type of connection, but the operating system don't you...

  • Moved Lightroom 5 catalog Previews.lrdata file on hard drive external now missing Images! Help!

    Hi all

Help, please.  To try to free up space on my MBP with 128 GB SSD, I moved the file 'Lightroom' of my 'Images' folder to my DHM.  When I open LR could not find all the pictures, so I moved the file to my MBP and back in the folder "Images".  Only problem is now there is a charge of missing images last year.  I have all my CR2 files on my DHM so, luckily, I still have the physical copies of the originals, but all my changes disappeared.  I spent dozens and dozens of hours editing family shots and other photographs and I'm very nervous that I may have just lost all?

    Please please help...

    Thank you...

I can't answer the question about missing images. However, after you move the Lightroom for the EHD folder you open that folder and double-click the catalog file in its new location. After that, if you have preferences in Lightroom configurΘ for the most recent dΘmarrer Lightroom Catalog use the catalog located on the EHD.

  • How to cut a Lightroom 3 catalog? And join the two together...

I did wrong in a lot of work on a batch of images in the "bad" Lightroom Catalog I'm primarily a sports photographer and that you have all the stuff of sports in a catalog and stuff not athletes in another. And I put a major sporting event - 8000 photos - in the non-sports catalog. What should I do to get out and get back to the right? I guess I could separate them by duplication of the catalogue, opening one and delete the event and openness to others and remove all the rest, but this seems a bit lengthy. And if this is the only way, how then do the event separated from catalog items in the catalog of sport?

I'm sure it must be simpler than it looks!

    Guy

Select the images, or record or collections you want in your catalog to another

    .

    • Then go to file, export as catalog.
    • Do not export the negatives, then uncheck this box.
    • Give it a name.
    • Export it.
    • Open your catalog on the other.
    • Select file, import from catalog and import.
    • Job done.
