The first thing to try is to turn off the graphics acceleration (go to Preferences/Performance tab and then uncheck the box here).   I think your problem is that your fingers trigger the proximity sensor.  When you enter the numbers on the phone during a call make sure you hit the first speaker key.  This will disable the proximity sensor and the screen will not virgins on you you are trying to enter numbers.  I hope this helps.
