I agree with aspöck 3.6.24 is the latest 3.6.x version which is always maintained for security and stability. I use this version on one of my laptops (XP) for the same reasons you mentioned.

Here is a link to theHP Support Assistant. The HP Support Assistant helps with the update of drivers. The latest version of the software from AMD is not necessary to work from your laptop.
