  Hey Roscoe,

  If you're still using MSE, I doubt there's this problem.  This made a few changes to the Windows Firewall during installation (if necessary), but certainly nothing that would cause it to turn on and off like that.  It could be malware (malware can cause anything), but frankly more sounds like a file systems or corruption or some type of problem with your Windows Firewall or security setting or your operating system in a more general sense rather than the malicious software.  I will refer you to experts who specialize in this kind of thing, but if they tell you it's a malware problem, then come back here and we will be happy to help you solve it.

  For that matter as described, please post here to get the best advice from specialists in this: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/security?tab=all which will be more than happy to help you.  You will probably need to uninstall the other firewall you have installed so they can diagnose the problem properly and without hindrance (not just disable it, but completely uninstall to be sure) - but they can tell you more on this subject.  Don't forget up next to the Windows Version to use the dropmenu to choose your version if you find yourself in the most appropriate forum for your system.

My computer still works, but it's just a matter of time before he died. This has happened before with my other computer and it ruined the drive.   Given that this only happens with Firefox 18, it seems reasonable to consider Firefox 18 related and possibly a problem of security or privacy, but I guess it could also be a question of settings. I upgrade my Internet Security every two days. I scan my laptop regularly. It still happens. I can't use Firefox for a browser because half my paltry 56 k of bandwidth is being sucked by some mysterious unsolicited download that occurs only when Firefox 18 is activated.

  This problem seems to have disappeared, don't know why but I have a possible theory. It's only a theory on my part, as I am not knowledgeable about the inner workings of Firefox. When I installed Firefox 18 there all automatic update options enabled by default. At the point where I turned off their all, I guess it started to download updates for all plugins and addons, like java, quicktime etc. etc. etc even if I had not personally initiated these downloads and updates. My theory is that once these downloads had begun, even if I had turned off the automatic update, it would continue the download of updates which had started and would not stop until she had done this.

  I do not disable anti-phishing and site wrong detection stuff, but I seriously doubt the update for these items would have been 89 megabytes of data, but I could be wrong.

  So for now, I'll close it and mark it resolved and continue to monitor to see if I have any more "strangeness" lights up.

  If you delete the first security application when you have installed the second Soft (follow-up) security, then you had several anti-malware applications installed at the same time, and if you have a real-time protection enabled for two of them, it would be the first place I'd watch to find errors.  The conventional wisdom is not having two AntiMalware applications in real-time, installed at the same time, what to do if it could cause instability and conflicts between these programs with resulting reduced rather than increased security.  A chosen AVG or Avira, but not both.  Even if this does not solve your immediate problem, it is still a way to avoid security errors in the future.
