  By chance are you using Norton 360? Try disabling the backup on the same status-

  Norton-> settings-> backup settings of-> backup status overlays-> OFF-> apply.

  Run the manual backup, it should be ok.

  I just started to use time machine yesterday with a 5 TB partitioned HARD drive. We have 3 TB and one had 2 TB. The time machine is using the 2 TB partition. When I get time machine, restore is dimmed and all my backups are in red. Why is this?

  I hope you don't mean that you try to back up one partition to another on the same drive. It does not work.

  You must select an item in the view of time travel until you click on restore. The color of the chronology is normal in El Capitan.
