Why asm instead of ocfs

Hi all
Oracle having its own (OCFS) cluster file system, then why both clients or others will and preferring the ASM or RAW devices? There is no advantange than OCFS in others? can you describe me

First of all, Let's clarify what each does. You probably know, in any case I'll put it down...

OCFS is an Oracle cluster file system that has been designed for use with RAC. It only supports database files.

OCFS2 is the second generation of the OCFS. Different from the previous OCFS, OCFS2 is a versatile file system that can be used for data files and also for regular files. You can use it to install the binary oracle, for example.

ASM is a component of Oracle database that acts as a volume manager, offering the performance of raw devices with the manageability of a file system. ASM sales/o very well, he really avoids hotspots... This is because ASM distribute i/o between disks in a disk group. You can use ASM for database related files as data files, redo log files, arch, RMAN, backpset, etc.. You can not put binaries on ASM.

Basically, the expected is: performance of raw devices and ASM tends to be better than that of OCFS2, but with OCFS2, you can use the commands like cp, mv, etc., etc., etc. It's really easy to use than the ASM and raw devices.

On the choice... Depends on your needs and to your project...

I'll give you two scenarios:

If you need to install the binaries in a shared file system, you must use a cluster filesystem (e.g. OCFS2) also you can use it to put the discs of OCR/Vote also, but you can use ASM for database files.

If you do not have to install the binaries in a shared file system, you can use Raw Devices to put the discs of OCR/Vote and you can use ASM for database files.

PS: In my case, I have never used OCFS as file system cluster for files of databases, in fact, I've only used OCFS for database files to my class CARS and testing on my lab at home. in my business, I was always using ASM to linux basics in clustered environments and raw devices for discs of the OCR/Vote. I did a few tests in OCR/Vote OCFS2 discs and I did not like the results... I had rather put in raw devices as well as data in ASM files. I OCFS2 installed on these environments, but it has been used for common shared files, not for database files.

It will be useful,
Cerreia

  • Why ASM isn't down a disk (LUN) after that it disconnects during a period?

    Version grid: 11.2

    By default, ASM descends a hours MON 3.6 after it goes / taken offline. This can be delayed by using DISK_REPAIR_TIME. But, why oracle is no in the first place? Can not wait until the storage team solves the problem?

    Hi GarryB,

    While a disc is set to offline, you have not fully mirrored. (Given that the blocks on the disk are not remirrored while disk is offline).
    Now leave a disc in another FG fail too... You may lose data.

    So choose the repair disk timer correctly is not as simple as that. The exadata, the time is extended to 48 hours.

    And 3.6 only being the default (parameter diskgroup) you can always change it yourself (given the precautions above).

  • Flash builder why? instead of flash professional IDE

    Sorry if I seem ignorant but most developers and businesses said it is absurd to use professional flash instewad flash builder IDE.

    I am totally ignorant and thought that flash builder was FLEX - that is to say: I have no idea how to program in flex - I can only code in AS3. I'm off track here. What is the advantage of flash builder? ALL the tutorials I've read are on flash and almost never on flash builder - am I getting confused? Generator flash everything easier ID like an environment of coding in AS3 but adding many features to mnake - IE: no difference in coding or the swf produced etc...

    In addition to what the other guys said, Flex Builder (now it is called Flash Builder), Flash IDE, FlashDevelop, FDT and other programs are just development environments that come with some additional benefits. The result is the same - swf that is no different in the heart no matter what environment you are using.

    Conceptually, you can write code in a Notepad, compiler point swf and you will get swf.

    Although the Flash IDE has improved over time as a development tool - it is not a match for environments more sophisticated such as Flash Builder or FDT and FlashDevelop. Note that other than the IDE Flash environments are based on programs that are used by the developers in other languages like Java. For example, Flash Builder is based on Eclipse. This is significant because for many reasons that Flash IDE can not live up to what more robust platforms has evolved into. Unlike the other tools and frameworks, it is very difficult (sometimes impossible) to accommodate the Flash IDE for the development of industrial power. Deployment and version control are the major headaches in the Flash IDE.

    Flex is just a library that is developed on top of AS3 the same as you build your own classes (this is statement is true 95%). Of course, as mentioned, there is an additional way based on xml to develop Flex applications, but in the end, everything is translated into AS3 and compiled. Therefore, Flex application is essentially just a Flash application (and here the word Flash is used as a name of the technology as a whole).

    If you are unsure on what to accept as main tool, remember that the Flash IDE is a tool inherited which Adobe inherited from Macromedia. With the introduction of Flex/Flash Builder Adobe clearly demonstrated a commitment to a business oriented plus technology. Latest version of Flash Builder comes with an attempt to integrate Flash IDE workflow. Basically, the only step left is some kind drag timeline environment in Flash Builder and Flash IDE did die. It is my personal opinion.

    In addition, Adobe is trying hard to integrate their products into a framework/suite so that charts are developed where more natively (Illustrator, PhotoShop, etc.) and export them to the Flash format and programming tasks are accomplished in Flash Builder. It's called Adobe Catalyst.

    I have an idea that Adobe is usually very eager to kill the Flash IDE. The only thing stopping them is, perhaps, they do not want to piss off an already agitated crowd of designers who are reluctant to adopt OOP.

    The fact is that, together with the fact that the IDE Flash is natively a very awkward tool to use for true OOP development, I would recommend to anyone to move away from Flash IDE towards something more sophisticated.

    Of course, it is sometimes necessary to use the timeline to create graphics, but with the advent of physics and 3D libraries - chronology begins to look more in more lame, even for the animations.

    In my opinion there is virtually none of the qualities of redemption in Flash IDE at this stage.

  • avoiding the fsck confectioners

    our version of DB: 11.2
    our operating system: SLES11
    our fs: ext3

    My question: with the FRA residing on ext3, how can I avoid long fsck runs on the server restarts: even with the own stops, Linux will eventually trigger forced fsck runs after a period of time (see also [why the ext3 fsck after X days or Y Monte? | http://prefetch.net/blog/index.php/2010/04/18/why-the-ext3-fscks-after-x-days-or-y-mounts]).

    It is not recommended to disable this mechanism with tune2fs.

    Novell recommends using xfs instead of ext3. But who would really help (and xfs, although supported by Oracle is not tested according to MOS)?

    With the partition of the FRA with a size of 2.1 to fsck can take up to 30 minutes or more, and it is a long time for the db server to return to the operation.

    Of course, the ASM comes to mind, but it would be just an another slab of complexity in a simple setup otherwise.

    Thanks for your review or share your experience XFS.

    OCFS2 is NOT an option recommended Oracle as a database file system.

    In fact, the ASM (since 11g) has its own (cooked) files in cluster systems called acfs. ASM is the recommendation of Oracle.

    We use the two (ocfs and ASM) and since 2005 with 10gr 1. Experience say they use ASM and not ocfs/etc for the database. Some main problems of main storage and the problems over the years were non-issues because of the DSO.

  • How Oracle Clusterware Oracle RAC and 3rd-party Clustering with them

    I have some questions on how Oracle, Oracle RAC and 3rd party clustering CLusterware fit between them.

    Q1. My understanding is that the Infrastructure Grid Oracle Clusterware is Oracle's Clustering solution that allows applications to cluster? that is, it is a general clusterware solution to compete with those already on the market. Is this correct?

    Q2. So why CARS is necessary for the Oracle cluster databases? An Oracle database is not just considered one application like any other? So why can not just use you GI / Clusterware to gather what you would do for any other application? Why so you need RAC to the Clusterware Summit?

    Q3. Is it is possible to combine an Oracle database using 3rd party of clustering and not use Oracle Clusterware and CARS at all that is can you say cluster, an Oracle database using say Sun Clusters, Clustering AIX or Linux native same clustering?

    Q4. If the RAC is purely for Oracle Cluster databases - what is with the title "Real Application Clusters"? What's real on this subject?, what to ask?

    Q5. I also read that RAC can use 3rd party of clustering. However if you decide that this is the case, then you need to install Oracle Clusterware when even (I think for interconnection must be created to allow the merger with Cache between Instances of node?).

    Is this the case?  If yes why never bore you with 3rd party clusters? -Since you will have to install Oracle Clustering anyway - and I probably have to license (all I can think about is the scenario that you already have a cluster of 3rd party in place and you decide that you need to use the same material for a database cluster)?

    All wisdom greatly appreciated,

    Jim

    Yes, with 10g, you had to use the CRS, and with 11g, to use the GI.  For 9i RAC, you would use Verits Cluster and Sun Cluster or anything else.

    11g RAC to GI.  As above, you can use clusterware extra if needed.  I gave the example above where to a 10g RAC we used the CRS to the cluster database/listener/vip and allowing groups of volume and filesystem in HACMP cluster.  File systems were not shared, but could switch to another node failure node, who has been treated by HACMP.  The volume of the groups containing the raw devices were shared volume groups.  For 11g, I never used extra clusterware on top of CRS and have always used ASM which is part of the GI.

    The application provider only certified database to run on 10g on AIX with raw devices.  What is strange about that?  It would be unusual that you probably expect to use ASM instead of raw devices, but it is what it is.

    See the following Note of Oracle for more information: using Oracle Clusterware with vendor Clusterware FAQ (Doc ID 332257.1)

    It is perhaps easier to explain if you can explain what problem you are trying to solve?

    Occurrence

    (A) origin configuration:

    1 ASM RAC 11.2.0.3.

    2 ASMLIB installed API

    3 Linux 64-bit

    4 IBM NSeries N7950T - Data ONTAP 8.0.2P3 (firmware update)

    5 starts have been created on disks for the 512 byte sector.

    (B) the problem started on the new configuration 'IBM NSeries N7950T - Data ONTAP 8.1.1':

    1 ASM RAC 11.2.0.3.

    2 ASMLIB installed API

    3 Linux 64-bit

    4 IBM NSeries N7950T - Data ONTAP 8.1.1 (firmware update)

    5 starts have been created on disks for the 512 byte sector.

    Note 1: The problem can occur on any version of ASM (10.2.0.1X to 11.2.0.X).

    Note 2: The problem can occur on any release ASMLIB.

    Note 3: This problem can occur with any other provider of storage, if the firmware update changes / changes physical_block_size = 4 096 bytes (4 KB).

    (C) this is a problem with "logical_block_size" are present now drives = 512 bytes and "physical_block_size" = 4 096 bytes (4 KB) because of follows her SAN firmware upgrade:

    Before the updated firmware to the storage device:

    # cd/sys/block/dm-21/tail

    # more * block_size

    ::::::::::::::

    logical_block_size

    ::::::::::::::

    512

    ::::::::::::::

    physical_block_size

    ::::::::::::::

    512

    After the update of the storage device firmware:

    # cd/sys/block/dm-21/tail

    # more * block_size

    ::::::::::::::

    logical_block_size

    ::::::::::::::

    512

    ::::::::::::::

    physical_block_size

    ::::::::::::::

    4096

    This problem occurred because of storage the device firmware has been updated. The old firmware reported size of logical block of 512 bytes / 512 bytes physical block size, after the upgrade, the new firmware reported, 4096 bytes physical block size / size of 512 byte logical block. Therefore, a diskgroup created with 512 bytes blocks now suddenly work on a device to report areas of 4 096 bytes. Why ASM will refuse to import/up the diskgroup (s).

    In other words, the logical sector size is presented = 512 bytes and the physical size of area presented = 4 096 bytes (4 KB), it is not supported by ASMLIB API at this time.

    (E) despite the ASM starts were created on 512-byte sector size disks, ASM detects disks ASMLIB with a = 4096 bytes (4 KB) sector size instead of a size of sector = 512 bytes, this inconsistency is causing the issue (ORA-15085: ASM disk "" is the size of sector incompatible.):

    + ASM > select v$ asm_disk group_Number, disk_number, sector_size path

    .

    GROUP_NUMBER DISK_NUMBER PATH SECTOR_SIZE

    ------------ ----------- ------------------------------ -----------

    ...

    0 75 ORCL:TMSTS01_LUN010 4096

    (E) but if the ASMLIB is disabled/bypassed (ASM_DISKSTRING = "/ oracleasm/dev/discs / *'"), then the disks are presented/detected with a sector size = 512 bytes:

    + ASM > select v$ asm_disk group_Number, disk_number, sector_size path

    .

    GROUP_NUMBER DISK_NUMBER PATH SECTOR_SIZE

    ------------ ----------- ---------------------------------------- -----------

    ...

    / dev/oracleasm/disks/TMSTS01_LUN010 0 75 512

    (D) this problem is due to update the Firware SAN and the next bug ASMLIB (ASMLIB enhancement):

    ? Bug: 13999609 - REPORTED PHYSICAL BLOCK SIZE CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH DATA 10 G databases

    ? oracleasm pilot (ASMLIB) from today works in the expectation that the logical block size and the physical block size are 512/512 bytes. This particular/firmware storage seems to be, then the configuration will not work with the oracleasm driver.

    ? We understand that size of 4K sector disks must be supported, so we are working on a solution of development of ASMLIB.

    ? Therefore, currently, this update of the firmware of the SAN is not certified and is not supported with ASMLIB.

    Symptoms

    I'm copying Mail information from 2008 2012 desktop computer without having to migrate everything on. Why copy instead of move? I don't want to do a wholesale migration because I don't want to not all the rubbish that has accumulated over the years to come through.

  • Failed to add the network printer

    Hello

    We have a client that connects to our ERP system to print orders.  They connect through a VPN site-to-site and then access our system through an RDP connection to a server 2008R2 instance.  The printer is a HP LaserJet 4100tn

    When I first set up in the spring I was intending to use the easy print with the redirect to printer driver to print orders.  However exceptionally slowly printed orders and I was not able to determine why.  Instead I've implemented their LaserJet as a local printer on our desktop server remotely using a HP LaserJet 4100 Series PCL6 driver.  It worked perfectly, and they have been printing without problem until yesterday.

    Yesterday for some reason any printer stopped working.  On our Remote Desktop server, it appeared as grayed out with an exclamation mark above.  I did the following diagnosis:

    > They can print from their own local office it
    > They changed and turn it on again
    > I can ping the printer from our server OK
    > I can get on the web interface of the printer OK from our server
    > Restart our server remote desktop
    > Turn off the Windows Firewall on the Remote Desktop server

    I therefore decided to remove the printer and add it again.  I go through the configuration wizard Windows printer usual choosing to do a new TCP/IP port, but when I put the IP address of the printer in Windows says that it is not the printer on the network (photo attached).

    I tried to delete the printer port which has been associated with this printer and remove the driver but Windows still won't "see" the printer.

    I am able to configure this printer on other servers from RD (2003 and 2008) and I also tried setting up on an old XP box, I had to hang out without problem.  Curiously, it seems only that this server is the only one that I can not set up the new even if it can ping the printer OK.

    I found a troubleshooting printer HP hereWeb page but who was no help, and the software does not work on Windows Server versions.

    Don't know what to do next!

    This was solved by changing the IP address of the printer

    After changing the IP address, I was able to add the printer to the server OK.

    I wasn't able to find out why this is the case, but guess it is some incorrect IP or the information stored in the registry.

  • Stylus active Version A02 a winner

    Received today my stylus version A02. I think the 3rd times the charm and we finally have a winner. No clicks hovering and without waiting forever for the table to recognize the stylus. No disconnects for long periods of time no more. Time will tell...

    Unfortunately, despite repeated requests, Dell still stubbornly has not issued a manual and Tech specs on the stylus.  God knows why.  Instead, know the stylus to read the messages in the forums and to use and experiment with.  (There are a few pages on the stylus in the manual of DV11P, if I remember correctly, but there is little information).

    As for turning off the pen: my understanding (based on experimentation) and that of others, is that the stylus auto-offs after about 30-60 seconds, when the tip of the stylus is not in about 1/2 to 1 inch from the face of the tablet.  You can experiment to test this, as I did - see if the appearance of the hover.  And so, no need to remove the battery.  To reactivate the stylus, press the tip on the tablet surface (or, optionally, you can also just press the stylus buttons - I don't remember if that will do).

    Personally, I prefer a real switch / stop - why not have one on top of the tip, just like a pen, or integrate it into the buttons at the end of the stylus, when a button is pressed and held?  Should be pretty easy to do, it seems to me.  But, in the meantime, it is what it is.
