  What is the optical drive that you use to install with? Just for grins, double check that it is a dvd - rom (at least). I had problems installing on old one hardware because it is only to have a cd player (no dvd read ability). It would be to start it from the media, but fails when installing (not sure how it could, but it does)...

  As ESXi 4 is installed, you could just opt for this version. You can get the console (on the host) enabled through the directions here (including SSH access)...
