  Last updated on 15/07/13: I managed to solve this problem. All I had to do was to rename the folder in the case to be 'Photos' instead 'photos.' Once I renamed the mounted folder (because it shows on the C drive), the photos are visible in the Photos app.   Curiously, the photos appear but not the name of the subfolder. Not really a major problem, but a little... weird, maybe.
