  HI, I have just upgraded to Windows 8 Windows 7 pro.

  The upgrade went well, and all of my previous Win 7 applications work. However Win 8 (those launched from the startup screen) applications do not work.   Honestly I've read a lot about this. There are so many messages that MS needs to make some kind of announcement. There are many theories about what is causing the issue, and most of them seem to be centered around the antivirus, firewall and other. I read that Windows 8 has strengthened its security and protection with Windows Defender anti-virus. I had the same questions as everyone else. My metro apps wouldn't work. Click it, you get a splash screen, and then it seems to be load with points of spinning in a circle and that's all I could get. I worked on this for 2 days and with extreme frustration. I took some advice from some other people having the same problem and I completely uninstalled Mcafee Security Suite, rebooted the computer and low and behold, that resolved 'my' problem. As for others, I can't say. I've never once refreshed or borrow. I wish I had done just a couple of days! I hope you make the right decision for yourself. I have now no antivirus 3rd party anything on my system. I'm a careful Internet user when it comes to the internet and I stay away from any type of file-sharing sites. I hope this does not come back and bite me. Good luck!
