Windows 7 Compatibility Mode behavior

I am reproducing this issue I posted earlier, at superuser.com without getting any response. I need to know the answer to this question; more and more of my users have this problem.

http://superuser.com/questions/743064/Windows-7s-compatibility-mode-behavior

Review the settings of Mode of Application compatibility for a typical Windows program:

The question is: what exactly will happen to the environment (in particular, access to C:\ProgramData) provided by Windows in the program where the only change is to set properties for compatibility with WinXP SP3, as follows:

The background:

An application that has been updated during the golden age of Windows XP gives us some problems now. Specifically, it is optimized to use a .NET library to write files in a subdirectory in the %ALLUSERSPROFILE% area (on Windows 7, this is generally C:\ProgramData ) which are essential to the license of the application. The files themselves are plain text files.

These text files are created and written to using a much newer and separate program .NET that works without problems, write the files to the right place. But then the old program does not read the files correctly; We have not been able to determine exactly what is happening.

Many users find that setting compatibility mode allows the system to function properly. I need to better understand that much.

This issue is beyond the scope of this site and must be placed on Technet or MSDN

    Hi dartglass01

To change the settings for compatibility manually for a program, right-click the program icon, click Properties, and then click the compatibility tab. You can uncheck the option to run this program in compatibility mode dedicated

I'm trying to understand this Compatibility Mode XP actually changes or turns on or off in Windows 7. Is there a list of what it actually does?

    Hi Timmay,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community forum.

According to the description above, it seems you want to learn about program compatibility mode.

Program compatibility is a mode in Windows that allows you to run programs written for earlier versions of Windows. Most programs written for Windows Vista are also running Windows 7, but some older programs might run poorly or not at all.

What changes does: It depends on the problem, but any changes made are related to how Windows runs the program. No changes are made to the program itself. For example, the program compatibility Assistant can resolve conflicts with user account control, a security feature in Windows that can help make your computer safer. Or, it can run the program in a mode that simulates earlier versions of Windows. The changes that made the program compatibility Wizard are automatically, so you don't need to make them.

  • Forced in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode

I just had an accident of the P - Pro, usually not big thing, but this time I got a Windows 7 dialog box that said he was going to run P - Pro in compatibility mode in the future. This is an issue that will affect performance and if necessary, a way to tell Windows to stop and the spirit of its own affairs? My question is, how do I activate P - Pro do not run in mode compatibility, assuming that there is a decline in performance?

  • I'm trying to run a game in windows 95 compatibility mode, but the compatibility under Properties tab disappeared.

I am running windows 7 Professional. It is not the version of upgrade.

    Hi Tippo_89,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!

    (1) have you been able to use the compatibility feature earlier?

Try the steps below and see if you can run the program.

To run the troubleshooting program compatibility Troubleshooter

    (1) open the resolution of the problems of compatibility of programs by clicking the Start button, then Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooting, and then click Troubleshooting. Under programs, click on run programs for previous versions of Windows.

    (2) follow the instructions contained in the resolution of the problems.

If you are unable to install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the Troubleshoot utility, navigate to the program setup file, usually called Setup.exe, Install.exe, or something similar. This utility is not designed to work on programs that have an .msi file name extension.

Access the link below for more information on the steps below.

  • Currently, I am running Windows 7 but to install a range more network adapter Linksys which is only compatible with Windows XP. Can I use the compatibility mode and install through XP?

You can understand that I want to change my office from Wired to Wireless and really to have the adapter installed in the back of my Office Wireless (with dual band antennas).  The Linksys device is not yet recognized because I'm running Windows 7 while trying to install the drivers which are only Windows XP and previous versions. Is it possible to USE the Windows 7 compatibility mode > XP and still have a stable system when I'm not using the adapter. ?  Really appreciate the help of someone who can advise me.

    Thank you all very much,

    Roger Willis

    Calimesa, CA.

    Hi Roger

The Compatibility Mode works with hardware or software drivers. This mode is less reliable when installing the hardware drivers that it is during the installation of software.

If Compatibility Mode fails, your only option would be to check with the support of Linksys.

  • Windows 95 compatibility

Windows 7 has a Windows 95 compatibility mode for older games?

    Lance68,

Yes, it's done, but it is not 100% guaranteed to work correctly. This works for some programs, but not for all.

Right-click of your program, properties tab check "Run in compatibility mode" and W95 is top of the list. There are also some specific options like use res 640 x 480 or 256 colors etc.

But nothing is certain in what concerns if the program is running or not.

Make sure your drivers are updated... and tell the program to run in compatibility mode.

  • Problems installing of printer in the Windows XP compatibility box

I am trying to use my printer Canon MX870 Windows XP compatibility mode. In the compatibility window is my computer has no printer, and apparently no USB ports don't either.

When I try to print from a program that is running in compatibility mode, I get an error box that says: no printer driver is installed.

I found an MS article that says I should choose the Windows XP desktop tools > parameters command and check the printer in the menu of the integration features. I tried and found that printer is already checked.

I tried to install a separate printer driver compatibility window and had no luck there either. The "Add a printer" Wizard has informed me that there is no plug-and-play printer connected to the computer. When I tried to install the printer manually, I found that none of my USB ports have been listed as locations.

My computer has eight USB ports, an RS-232 port and a parallel port. The Wizard indicates that it is three parallel ports, 4 serial ports and seven ports 'TS' appointed TS001, TS002, etc., of which the last is "inactive".

I don't know how to make the link between these imaginary ports of Windows XP for real hardware in my computer. (If I did, I would still need to know which one to use. I know, but Windows is supposed to automatically allocate the names of devices on the USB ports that is appropriate, in view of these problems, I am not prepared to assume that it will be).

How can I handle this? All this seems to be a mess.

    Hello

To work around the problem, try the following steps if you have this driver on the XP Mode desktop file.

    a. click Start, click Control Panel , and search for printers , and then double-click Printers.
    b. now, click Add Printer.
    c. Select Add a local printer and click create a new port.
    d. Select Local Port and click Next.
    e. type in "[\\computer name\printer name]"(sans les guillemets) for the Port name and click OK. ""
    f. follow the instructions to complete the installation. During the installation, when you are prompted to choose a good driver; Click the "disk".
    g. navigate to the driver file you have on the desktop XP mode, then click OK. Now, check if the printer is correctly installed.

You can even provide the driver through a disk file if you do not have internet access to download the file via the XP mode.
