  the XP license on your Dell computer is OEM and it's MSDN, retail. The keys are not interchangeable. You have need a version of XP MCE OEM or better yet a Dell XP MCE 2005 DVD of resettlement which will automatically be enabled in the Dell BIOS without entry of a product key.

  Solved. I was able to activate using the automated telephone system. It was one of the choices during activation regular wouldn't cross.

  I had to enter a long string of digits divided into 9 groups. The system gave me another long string of numbers in the boxes, I clicked next and learned the activation was successful.
