Windows cannot access (insert computer name) __Please check spelling or there may be a problem with your network.

I am networking a few new machines windows 7 to an existing with both Vista and XP computers already on that network. I implemented a working network and opened ports in our McAfee Firewall that windows is recommended. However even if the older OS machines can access windows computers 7 and Windows 7 computers can access the older operating system, windows machines 7 cannot access each other.

The computers appear on the network, but when they try to access an error message is displayed. I even tried to uninstall McAfee, but the problem persists. What is the problem?

Hey Jessi9,

don't know if you figured it out yet. I just installed windows 7 ultimate 64-bit 2 days ago and have been pulling my hair on the same issue. everything seems to be configured correctly, no? I ended up watching the setting of my NIC for awhile and realized the rest of my computers do not use TCP/IPv6, everything else is using v4.

SOLUTION:

So, go into the settings of your network card, scroll items and uncheck the "Internet Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) Protocol. Click on the Version 4-> properties-> advanced-> WINS-> you ensure that what follows is enabled, "enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

your computers now appear?

* also, I'm sorry to have proposed the previous post as an answer, I clicked on it by mistake and there is no way to undue it.

    Troubleshooting Internet connectivity

1 answer to the first and second troubleshooting Questions:

First Question of troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what has changed between the time things worked and the time they do not have?

The second issue of Windows troubleshooting: what is the status of virus/malware of the machine? If you think it's clean, what programs (and versions) allows you to determine this?

Make sure that the computer is clean - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Many variants of malware will allow a proxy server if you are unable to Internet. Go to control panel > Internet Options > connectivity tab > LAN button. If all is selected in the section Server Proxy, uncheck the box, apply/OK outside.

    2. If nothing has changed and that the computer is clean, what antivirus/security programs are you running? Have AVG 8 or Zone Alarm? These two programs have had updates that caused Internet connectivity problems. I don't recommend either of these programs, but if you want to keep check them on the mftrs.' support websites.

    3. If #2 is not applicable:

    a. unplug the router.
    b. disconnect the modem. (If you have a DOCSIS 3 modem with battery backup, press the Reset button to reset the modem so the lights go out).
    c. wait 60 seconds.
    d. plug the modem (or wait until the reboot is completed) and expect that all the lights are on.
    e. plug the router and wait until all lights are on.

You now have an Internet connection? Otherwise:

    4. connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem. You now have an Internet connection? If so, there is a problem with the router. They do not last forever. Replace it.

If there is no Internet when your computer is connected directly to the cable/DSL modem, call your ISP because something is wrong with the cable/DSL modem or your Internet service.

    Hello

Were there any changes (hardware or software) to the computer before the show?

Perform the check and the boot if the problem persists.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Note: Follow step 7 to reset the computer to start as usual after the boot process.

Important note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Note: You should not turn off Windows Firewall unless you have another firewall is enabled. Turning off Windows Firewall may make your computer (and your network, if you have one) more vulnerable to damage caused by worms or hackers.

  • Windows cannot access \\COMPUTER1

When I try to connect to a working group, it connects perfectly. My laptop can 'see' all of the computers on the network, it is able to see the shared data and files from a computer that uses Windows Vista, but when I try to access the data stored on a computer that uses Windows XP, it will not work. I have two computers running Windows XP and when I try to access their data, I see the following message is displayed:

    Windows cannot access \\COMPUTER1

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there could be a problem with your network. In an attempt to identify and solve network problems, click on diagnose.

    Hi Jacob, P

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

Disable the firewall for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you will need to configure it to allow access to addresses of "zone of confidence". Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to prevent them from affecting your network.

PING each computer by its IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can get the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and by typing IPCONFIG.

Check your Services are started on all PCs: workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, computer browser.

All computers must be in the same workgroup for the navigation computer to function properly. Sharing of print files & must be enabled on any computer you want to share files or printers. You also need to actually share the resource in question from the hard disk, right-click on the drive-> printer-> folder and select sharing.

If you have problems to access computers that are visible in network neighborhood, make sure the computer access has an account with the same name and password that the computer connecting to it uses to connect.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it is possible so that it can be changed, and it costs nothing to make sure that it is correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for browsing the normal network.
