Windows features

What should be checked in the windows features list box?

In addition, when you do a cleaning disc for OS(C:) quels fichiers doivent être supprimés?)

Hi jmarl,

1. Why do you want to enable Windows features?

Windows features required for the performance of the operating system is enabled by default. You don't have to turn on or off Windows features at less than his need.

If you want to reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space and help your computer run faster, use disk cleanup. It removes temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of file system and other items that you no longer need.

  • "Turn on or off windows features" is disabled through local politics.

Basically, I have a PC when I try Windows features turn on or turn off, it comes up saying I need a system administrator. I am the system administrator, I have rights to the domain. From what I understand, this is local politics, but I can't find the specific entry to activate specifically for this.

I found the info, thank you.

I looked in the Local Group Policy Editor and found that the two keys that touched this are as follows:

Configuration - Administrative Templates - user Add or Remove Programs - Hide Add/Remove Windows components Page (not configured).

Configuration - Administrative Templates - user control panel - programs - hide "Windows features" (activated). Changed to not configured.

  • Tower or disable Windows features displays the empty dialog box

I go to control panel > programs and features and click then on "Turn Windows features on or off". I get called "Windows features" dialog box that says "Please Wait". After 45 seconds, this dialog box becomes empty and nothing is displayed.

I ran the twice System File Checker, but it shows no problem. I did repair Startup (by pressing F8 key so that Vista boots) but the problem persists.

As suggested on some websites of support, at the command prompt, I have ran reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty but had "error: the system was unable to find the specified registry or the value key.

I tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931712 and it's of no use to me.

I can't do a system restore I don't know since when this problem started can be 1 month back or can be 6 months because previously I had no need to turn on the features of vista as an option.

I use a stand-alone HP laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz) with Vista home premium pre-installed, and I also installed SP1. Please do not suggest format me my laptop and do a fresh install of vista that HP never gave me the operating system DVD.

What should I do now? Help, please!

    Hey Anshul Rastogi,

    Thank you for your response.

You are able to run updates on your system?

If Yes please make sure you have all the updates installed on your system.

Please see the following article to guide you through some troubleshooting steps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934538

Please perform a system update and also walk through the troubleshooting steps in the above article and let us know if any of the two solves your problem then that otherwise we can take the next step and find a solution for you. The next step is to restore your system back a month to see if this is useful, and if not then do a restore of the system to the next restore until you find one that allows your system to the function you are eager to point.

  • What windows features are turned on or off?

What features windows should be on or off?

    Hi Apixie,

In earlier versions of Windows, to turn a feature off you had to uninstall it completely from your computer. In this version of Windows, the features remain stored on your hard drive, so you can turn them back if you want. Turn off a feature does not uninstall the feature, and it does not reduce the amount of disk space used by Windows features.

I just read this thread and found that Kaddiff was confused at the time of its issue. His use of the term "windows" standard/default"installed programs" generated a stream of responses which fail to settle his "real"question. " Only Dax1792 seems to answered the question of "real". If you replace the word "features", "programs" the original question makes more sense in the context of the object in the header. It is also a good question that remains largely!

The best answer by far in my humble OPINION is that, in Dax1792, but can someone do better and how the items in the list of Windows features are to be checked or unchecked if you perform a typical and not custom Windows 7 installation?

A tee shot. Several Windows in the list features arise often in discussions about performance problems. Performance problems were clearly a concern for Kaddiff as you will see in reference to them in his message.

    Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

  • Windows Vista using Windows features turn on or off does not

I am trying to turn on IIS in Windows Vista using the Windows features turn on or off. I check the box IIS and click OK. Then I get a message that says "Please wait while the features are configured. This may take several minutes. "There is a progress bar but it is blank and there is a Cancel button, but it is disabled. I tried to create a new user account, and it does not solve the problem. If it's any help, when I use the Task Manager to end the task, he said something along the lines of "this programming is waiting for a user input. How can I solve this problem? Is there another way to turn on IIS?

Sorry I have not responded earlier. I never saw your post. Maintenance has been done on the forum yesterday and your message appeared as if by magic.

There are many problems with vista that will most probably never be fixed. If they could have fixed them easily Microsoft would not be rushed on Windows 7.

The only hope would be SP3 but it seems unlikely.

It's a shame because that Vista could have and should have be the best OS to date, but because of all the problems, complain and impatient people and $$$ along Windows 7.

No need to throw your laptop Vista in the drink!

I got rid of 98% of the problems in this way.

When I bought my last laptop I paid extra for the OS DVD and reinstalled the operating system after SP2 came out (and was very happy also to get rid of the full factory image of... Dell put on my system).

SP1 was on my DVD of the OS, so I bought SP2 from Microsoft (it costs $4 more delivery charges) https://om2.one.microsoft.com/opa/Validation.aspx?StoreID=1a7e5dd8-0088-46ce-a7d3-8fa1ab523be0&LocaleCode=en-us and after installing the OS, I installed SP2 before the drivers, utilities and Applications, in that order, and most of the problems have disappeared.
