Windows in a virtual machine

Hello

My X200s new comes with preloaded Vista Business and 3 CD marked as "Rescue and recovery disk for Windows XP" and "Windows XP Professional SP2 product recovery disc 1 & 2", respectively. " I want to repartition the disk, remove Vista in the process, install linux Ubuntu 64-bit, and then install Windows XP in a virtual VMware or VirtualBox machine. The question is, are provided enough CD do a XP install in a virtual machine?

Thanks for the tips.

Jakub

No, you can not install XP on a virtual machine with the CD restore provided with your device. You will need a regular XP installation cd and a number of key valid. It has to do with the fact that the restore cd should see a BIOS generic virtual machine rather than the true BIOS Lenovo and refuse to install.

Now, I want to install linux on my machine and use the current windows in a virtual machine inside the linux host. Is is possible if I completely uninstall this windows of my computer and reinstall the virtual machine with the same key?
I'm not very familiar with this also can someone guide me what are the steps I have to take if this is possible.

    Hi Andre,

Thank you for your answer, but this does not completely answer my question. I also read that OEM installation does not install the same windows on another machine (virtual machine is like different machine even if I do this on the same machine) and installation of the mine is OEM type.

More important still, how install windows in the virtual environment? If I format the computer and install linux, in addition to this install virualbox and install inside windows that use the cd - key and it will work. ? I doubt it because the windows is already activated in this machine.

The extract of the contract (EULA) for Windows 7 and applies to the retail and OEM of Windows 7 versions. So, Yes, you can reinstall it in a Virtual Machine.

Yes, you will need to format the machine under Linux, then reinstall Windows 7 in a computer program virtual suitable as Oracle Virtual Box 4.2, VMWare Player 5.0 or VMWare Workstation. You can then use the product key located on the COA sticker to reactivate the license.

  • Activate Windows: Run Windows as a virtual machine on Ubuntu: how to activate it?

I just got a Latitude 3550 with preinstalled Windows 8.1. I guess they were active OEM when I went first on the machine. Then I installed Ubuntu 14.04, formatting the drive completely (there is no ntfs partitions more, so Windows disappeared).

But since I paid for the windows, I would have liked to run using a virtual machine. Try an installation using the DVD provided with the laptop using VirtualBox, I wonder an activation code.

Do you know if it is possible to get one because I'm not using the original windows preinstalled?

Activation code? Probably say KEY of Activation for Windows 8.1?  Windows 8.1 is an update and should not be the pre-installed OS, it would be on the sticker on the laptop or it would be in the documentation that comes with it when you bought it.  Do you have one of these pieces of priceless gold paper and plastic with it?

If you have 2nd hand (from a private owner) she was probably preinstalled with 8.0 and then upgraded to 8.1.  If the answer is "Yes"; You must install 8.0 first and ACTIVATE it... before you run the upgrade to 8.1.

I'm trying to find a windows 8.0 site for download but only find 8.1...

  • Reinstall Windows XP in Virtual Machine on Windows 7

I have the Virtual Machine Windows on my OS Windows 7 Professional. This allowed me to install Windows XP on this computer. It worked fine for several months until, from one a few days ago, I cannot access the XP and have been advised by Microsoft to simply re - install the XP software and start again. When I try this, I said that the first step is to download and run a MS file named GenuineCheck.exe which is supposed to validate my system. When I try to run it, a note comes up saying that this file is obsolete. Do a little digging online, I told myself that this ony file works if you have Windows XP. What the definition of Catch 22? I have an XP corrupted in my virtual machine, so, technically, I have Windows XP. Any ideas on how I can be validated?

    Press enter

Scroll down and select Windows XP Mode, click Change/uninstall in the command bar

Restart when you have finished, and then try the installation again.

If you don't have a copy of the installer, you need to download again in Windows 7 Professional and reinstall:

    Hello

After the upgrade to Windows 7 Pro for Windows 10 Pro, my virtual Windows XP machine (which was created from the "XP" mode in Windows 7) no longer starts.

    It shows:

This system is not allowed to run "Windows XP Mode". Now, the virtual machine will be turned off.

How can I activate the Windows XP Mode in Windows 10 Pro? I mean, I have not lost my right to run Windows XP Mode, just because I've upgraded to Windows 10, right?

    Hello

How can I activate the Windows XP Mode in Windows 10 Pro? I mean, I have not lost my right to run Windows XP Mode, just because I've upgraded to Windows 10, right?

I fear that the statement is pretty much on the mark.

Microsoft caught only supported XP Mode in Windows 7, it has been since Windows 8.

You might be able to extract the folder integer vhd it and import it in VMware Workstation as a separate virtual machine. In the end, 'XP Mode' just was running a virtual machine in your Windows 7 after all.

  • Can I print screen a window inside a virtual machine?

    Hello:

I tried to open a .vsd on my MacBook Pro.

Unfortunately, I don't have a version of Visio on my Mac.

So, when I opened the file, he opened my WIndows 7 Virtual Machine.

Can I do a printscreen of this window in Visio in a VM?

    If so, how?

If not, can I cut and paste of my Windows 7 window into a file in Word or PDF on my Mac?

    If so, how?

    Thanks in advance

I do this all the time...

    1. prepare the area you want to capture visible

    2. click on a space empty on your desktop to Finder the active application on your Mac.

    3. Press Cmd + Shift + 4 and the area you want to a drag-and-release screenshot

A new PNG file with the screenshot will be on your Mac desktop.

Of course, you can also get a print screen for Windows utility, but I prefer to keep as little on my Windows VMs as possible.

  • Partition of Windows in a Virtual Machine - input/advice needed

    Hello

We have a Windows operating system in a virtual machine of VMware Vsphere.  There is plenty of room on the SAN.  However, the operating system is running out of space and needs more space.  We have extended the VMFS volume on which the virtual machine is running.  Now, within the OS, is there a simple way to extend the amount of disk hard windows space see without using a tool third 3rd to resize the size of the partition from the point of view of operating system?  Is there a tool VMware to do this, be integrated, or who uses the VMware API to to make it easier than in a world of pure physical server?  When we have extended partitions on a physical server, it takes a lot of time and requires that the server be down during the whole process, so I hope that there is a faster way with less interruptions in service when the operating system is a virtual machine.  Thanks a lot for your comments/advice.

    What produces these hosts guests?

If you are running on ESX (i)

a couple of things, if 2008, you can use diskpart to C: and the other data disks.  For 2003, you can use diskpart for non system partitions and something like extpart for system scores.

.. .or if all else fails, use a helper VM or VMware Converter.

  • Windows 2008/2012 180 day trial can be used on Virtual Machines?

I wonder if it's in the EULA to use tests of Windows with commercial virtual machines.

I see that there are too many companies that offer these tests with their VPS service. I don't think it's OK. Therefore, I would ask.

I also wonder if the detail Windows licenses can be used with commercial virtual machines.

If I remember correctly, only the SPLA Licensing can be used on commercial virtual machines.

  • Windows 7 Home premium on virtual machine

Hello I have a Sony Vaio S series keyed pre-installed windows 7 Home Premium OA MEA with the product at the bottom of the unit, I bought a mac book pro, and I want to use the same version (downloaded the iso file) as a virtual machine, the question is can I use the same product key to activate windows on the virtual machine?

    Hello

A license is a single Installation.

Even if you wanted to install this Windows 7 in a Virtual Machine on the Sony, you would need a second licence

And license information for the pre-installed on your machine from Sony OEM licenses.

If the computer/laptop comes with the preinstalled Windows operating system (Vaio from Sony, Dell, HP, Acer, etc.) or is licensed to OEM System Builders, that the product key that came with the computer/laptop is preinstalled OEM license and is not transferable.

OEM license/product key (systems of operating pre-installed on Dell, HP, Sony Vaio, machines etc.) and the license OEM System Builders are related to the first machine it is installed on and dies when the machine that dies.

Only retail Operating System license that you buy and install yourself, are allowed to be transferred to another machine.

And retail licenses also can be installed on a machine at one time.

    See you soon.

  • How to get the host name of the physical computer inside a virtual machine until the user logs in Windows?

I don't know if this is the right place to post this question, I develop software to support VMWare PCoIP and need to know how to get the host name of the physical machine (which manages the virtual machine and View Client) within a virtual machine before the user logs in Windows of the virtual machine.

I understand there are two ways to read the host name, via the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Volatile Environment registry and environment variables, but they are available once the user is connected. I need info before the user connects.

Is there a VMware API that can be called or asked the host name?

    Thank you.

Not on the broker, but there are the startup scripts to log on to the computer virtual itself: http://pubs.vmware.com/view-52/topic/com.vmware.view.integration.doc/view_integration_startsession_script.9.2.html

Note that these executed when a virtual desktop computer allocated connection, not to the point that the client connects - it is possible for the customer to not complete the connection (crash, cancel, network failure) and so any what solution you design must handle this.

  • URGENT! After installing 6 Fusion and creation of new virtual machine with Windows 7, I get a message "VMware Fusion cannot enter the unit". WHAT SHOULD DO?

After purchase, installation and activation Fusion 6 with the license key, I had a library of VMS showing 2 Boot Camp partitions. It's strange that I only have 1.
I tried to activate them but received a message that it is out of date in 2 cases. (see annex 1)

I started a new virtual machine with a Windows 7 installation disc directly on my HD. I have provided a way to do this and followed the instructions of Fusion to the screen.

Apparently, everything went well and after several restarts, the installation appears to be over (see annex 2) I tried to open and run the installed Windows 7. I had however a window with the following message:

    "Pending the unit.

"VMware Fusion cannot enter the unit. Please wait until the unit starts automatically, or interact with the virtual machine below. ' (see annex 3)

Here Windows 7 seems to start but after a while with the home screen and of the Øresund finishing this window closed and open a new window called library Virtual Machine on the left showing the partitions of Bootcamp and the Virtual Machine Windows 7 x 64 and in the middle gray a representation of what is supposed to be the Windows 7 desktop. (see Exhibit 4). When I opened the settings button a window with different setting options pops up. This mark means to me that Windows is installed but the final opening isn't the case

When you quit Vmware Fusion indeed Windows seems to be close (see part 5)

What is going on? What has gone wrong? What should I do? I don't know how to solve the problem.

I should f.i. remove the virtual machine from Windows 7 and is free automatically made partition on my HD as the reboot with the Windows installation disc? or y at - it another way to enter the UNIT?

    Help, please!

    Thanks in advance

Your virtual machine is running. It is in the unit - which each windows gets its own window of Mac - and you have no application Windows running, there is no visible windows. You can start a Windows application in the start of Fusion menu in the menu bar at the top right, or turn on the Windows task bar on the view menu and start applications from there. Or use the view menu to switch to the Single mode or full-screen, which puts all of your Windows desktop in a window separate from Mac.

You do not have two partitions to Boot Camp on your Mac, you have two virtual machines named "Boot Camp partition".

The message about it being unable to enter the unit arrives while the merger is pending for the tools begin to run, because the tool is necessary for the unit.
