Windows is asking to specify a product key, but then says it is not valid for this addition of windows.

Three months ago my computer was so full of errors, I had to delete it.  I used all the discs I have, but for some reason my Windows went from Vista to 7.  I know I couldn't have updated online, because I had no internet access after that my computer has been cleared.  So he had to be the software I already had.  Microsoft now requires my product key.  I blew it off the power for a while, thinking it was just a fluke, but now it seems rather insistent.  I don't know what to do. I can't find anything online that corresponds to this particular problem.  My product key is taken directly from my box and I don't know what else to use.  Help?

The windows key is specific to the version of installed win. So if you installed from a win7 disc you need the key published with this disc of win7

So either you have installed a trial version of win7 from cd or you got the disc from someone else - and no key has been provided

If your PC came with pre-installed Vista key on the label fixed on the computer is the key to Vista and cannot be used with Vista or PC recovery to the disks

If you qualify for the free Win7 upgrade when you bought a Vista PC disk would be a win7 update disc and you would have been provided with the Win7 key
