Windows System 32 Config system is missing or damaged

My computer froze last night so I had to turn off manually. When I turned it back on I got this message:

1. Insert resart and your computer windows installation disc.
2. choose your language settings, and then click Next
3. click on "repair your computer".

Other options:
If the power was interrupted during startup upward, choose start windows normally
(use the arrow keys to highlight your choice)

Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
Last known good configuration (Advanced)
Start windows normally

Any selection I choose I receive this message:

Windows could not start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. to solve the problem:
1. Insert resart and your computer windows installation disc.
2. choose your language settings, and then click Next
3. click on "repair your computer".

If you do not have the disk conact, your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \Windows\system32\config\system

status: 0xc00014c

Info: Windows could not load because the system registry file is missing or damaged.

I don't have the cd and I have no idea what to do. I just don want to lose all my files. I have tons of photos and vidoes I would not like to lose.
How can I fix without the cd? How can I get a cd? did I lose everything?
and what exactly happened to my computer?

Anything to help me understand what happened would be greatly apprciated.

Hello

Take it to a real computer store (not the leeks and peaks at BestBuy or a BigBox store) and the
put a new hard drive in it and reload Windows. The old disk can be put in another computer that the

This data can be saved to other media. Redundancy is better so use several methods.

It is also possible the player you have can be fixed, however, more you try with the error

I hope this helps.

The question was preceded by a loss of power, aborted reboot or abnormal termination? (This includes pulling and buttons power).

These can cause corruption in the file system that must be fixed before you do anything else.

If none of these events occurred (or even if they have not taken place), you must verify the integrity of your file system before anything else (especially "try" things).
There is zero logic to start try to copy files to a hard drive with a corrupted file system so corruption of file system must be fixed first using the XP chkdsk program and run chkdsk can solve your problem completely.
Use the XP Recovery Console to check the file system on your HARD drive and fix the problems and then try to start your system - this may be all you need to do.  Or, you are welcome to just start trying things that might work.
Start the Recovery Console Windows using an XP bootable installation CD, or create a bootable CD from the Console of the Recovery XP (no XP media required).
A CD of XP Recovery Console is not the same as the recovery disks that may have come to a store to purchase the system.
If you have any bootable CD to run the XP Recovery Console or that you are not sure what type of bootable CD you have, can create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console and don't forget (no support for XP not necessary).
If you need instructions to create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console, we can predict that too (just ask).
After booting into the Recovery Console, you should be in this folder:
    C:\WINDOWS
For each of your hard disk partitions, you must then run:
    Chkdsk /r
For example, at the Recovery Console prompt, enter:
    CHKDSK c: /r
Let chkdsk finish to correct the problems, he could find.  It may take a long time to complete or seem to be 'glued '.  Be patient.  If the HARD drive light flashes, it's something.  Keep an eye on the amount of the percentage to be sure that it is still making progress.  It may even seem to go back sometime.
The chkdsk/r must be completed without error, you may need to run several times until it does.
Remove the CD, and then type "exit" to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer and the report with your progress.

    Hello

You can buy this CD in the Toshiba service partner. It s not very expensive. This disc includes the image of an operating system and all Toshiba drivers & utilities.
The other way is to use an original copy of Microsoft Windows. After the installation of the OS, you must install all the drivers of Toshiba which are placed on the Web site.

  • \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is missing or damaged

I got a message saying that windows does not start because the following file is missing or damaged: wystem, config, system, windows.  I have long lost my windows installation cd, but I have the key code of the product than the original installers placed a sticker on the bottom of my laptop with it there.  Any ideas on how to solve this problem?  I am able to use another disk with my own code?  Do I need to buy a new installation disc?  I am at a total loss!  Thank you for your suggestions.

Without an installation CD, the recovery is a little more difficult.

You need start your computer from a bootable CD to start your recovery.  Two CD bootable Windows PE according to prices indicated BartPE , UBCD4Win.  Both methods require a building process to create the bootable CD and both methods require that you have a Windows XP disc install (it can be borrowed) to generate this CD.  Once you build, you can boot from it and try to run the "chkdsk" with the /F or/r option program.  Often this will fix your disk and you can boot from it.

The other approach is to copy your registry file (including the file system, which is damaged in your case) to restore system backups and replace the files that are giving you problems with these backups.  To do this, you will need to boot from a bootable CD.  Microsoft KB article for this procedure is here:

"How do I recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP startup"
Part 1 of KB307545 is rather 'at risk' and I found that the easiest to perform this procedure is to boot from a CD of Linux Live [free] such as Knoppix.  These discs are easier to create than those above and do not imply generally download an .iso file and using the function 'Burn Image' programs of disc burning to create the CD of this download.  Once started on the Linux CD, pick up the KB307545 in part 2, step 6.  Copy files using the graphic interface of Linux (Right-click-Copy and Right-click-Paste) instead of using command line commands, as described in the article.  You end up copying five files in the folder "System Volume Information" which contains the system restore points in the \Windows\System\config directory, then you stop, remove CD and restart on your hard disk and then perform a restore of the system (part 4 of the procedure).

Hope this helps and good luck,
    JW
