Windows Update 646 on KB977304 error code
I downloaded and installed 8 of 9 updates successfully in my computer (which has Windows Vista Home Basic Edition), but the major update of security for Microsoft Works 8 (KB977304) failed, and I got error Code 646, followed of a message "Windows Update has encountered an unknown error. I tried to download and install the update several times, without success. Finally, I stopped trying to install the update, as I thought Microsoft would soon find a solution to the problem, and I would be able to install the update at a later date.
Out of curiosity, I opened Microsoft Works word processor and clicked on "about Microsoft Works" under the help tab, to see which version of
Microsoft Works was preinstalled on my computer. I discovered that the Microsoft Works program in my computer is really version 8.5, not version 8 which is shown on the security update! The difference in the version numbers of the update for Microsoft Works and Microsoft Works program in my computer perhaps the reason why I got the error Code 646, message "Windows Update has encountered an unknown error"? Windows Update encountered an unknown error code 6b 7.
What is said for the most part. I am running Vista Home Premium x 64 on a machine rather top of range (Q9550 processor, 16 GB DDR2-800 RAM, fast hard drives 1.5 TB each, etc.) -specs factory, not overclocking, or something like that. When I try to install the updates, Windows meets an 'unknown error' (Code 6B 7). It usually happens when he tried to update .NET - and that's why I can't use Windows Live Messenger or all the other Windows Live programs, in addition to a lot of third party programs.
I am really lost and don't know what to do. I asked before and told to uninstall and reinstall all the old versions of the .NET, but also warned that the process was dangerous and could cause trouble.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. If you need more information, please ask and I will answer as best as possible.
