Workflow question: storage location of catalogs

Hello

I want to start to store my photos on external drives. I shoot normally attached to my MBP of the retina that has a very fast SSD drive. When I don't think I'll need to do a much more editing with these photos, I intend to put it on an external drive (so I'll still have access to them if I need them), but still find space on disk internal.

(1) what is the best way to move photos to the external drive so that I don't lose any changes, metadata, etc. ?

(2) should the catalog for these photos remain on my internal drive or should I just keep the catalog with pictures on the external hard drive?

The external hard drive will be mirrored and I exchange a player to an offsite location each week.

Suggestions/pointers would be very much appreciated!

-RJ

AD1:

Making the transition between LR and the externel drive.

If your LR catalog will know the final destination.

AD2:

Do you really need more than one catalog? It sounds as if you had small portions of catalogs of small portions of images. If so, I would can extend beyond it (necessarily LR, while that not open) in the same folder of drive.

But I wouldn't continue to several smaller catalogues, other intermediate tools before you can merge everything in your master LR catalog. It can contain data of 1 million images.

Remember the term 'catalogue' is unfortunate, because it actually means "database".

Image files can always be stored on external drives.

  • Dell backup and recovery file storage location

    I am trying to locate where a backup of files of initial data with the help of Dell Backup and Recovery on my new Windows 7 laptop (Jan 2015), stored backup files.  I failed to provide parameters to use an external hard drive for backup.  I want to clean up backup files it does I can start using an external hard drive as storage location.  I looked everywhere, both on my laptop and Google search to find the location.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    I know that it is a bit a necro but since it is unanswered.

    You can determine where the Dell Backup and Recovery Software stored your files by default when opening the software and start to run another backup. (Note: when you run the software again you may see the option to run another backup from the home screen.) In this case click on the drop-down menu almost invisible in the title bar (blue arrow), then select "Backup" (red arrow) in the menu.)

    On the screen "Data Backup", check the "local".

    'Creating data backup' screen will display a box titled "Browse...". "under the title"Where. "

    At the bottom of this box, you should see the path where Dell Backup and Recovery saved your backup.

    For me, the default location is "C:\users\CURRENT_USER\Documents". (CURRENT_USER is your user name).

    If you navigate to this location in Windows Explorer, you should see a folder named "Profile1". Here's my Dell backup files are stored by default.

    If for any reason you do not see a folder named "Profile1" I open the files in the default location and search for files with the .inp file extension. What are your backup files.

    BTW, for anyone reading the FAQ is NOT DELL-Jesse L linked to you to note what the FAQ for Dell backup and recovery that is currently in use. This is the FAQ for their former Dell DataSafe Local Backup 2.0 software which they no longer use. If you read that FAQ you can noticed the question and the answer below:

    How can I move backups of the system to another location for storage?

    Backup system can be moved to another storage location if you wish. Simply open Dell DataSafe and edit the backup for backups of your system profile. When you select the location, select the location where you want that all backups of the system to create. The application will automatically move all backups of your system to this new location.

    I just tested this in the current version of Dell backup and restore (version 1.8.1.70), and he did NOT move my old files from backup to the new location, he created a new copy from the backup, so you should delete old copies manually.

    I hope this helps someone.

    Hello out there! I am trying to understand the relationship between the products. I am a current user of 13 items and sought to CC Photoshop with Lightroom. Always use elements like the storage tool to catalog my photos or it get replaced?

    It's kind of ridiculous. All I want to do is ask a question and there is no place to connect with anyone. Sucks!

    Hi charlesf,

    If you choose to go to CC Photoshop with Lightroom, Photoshop Elements would not be replaced.

    CC of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are different programs, so the two will remain separate on your machine and catalogue items would not hit at all.

    Let us know if you have any other questions.

  • photos of the restoration to the new storage location

    I am a relatively new user of Lightroom 5. I had to buy a bigger external drive for my photos and need to move from the old disk to the new. When I try to move them with the feature to import/move Lightroom 5, the import button remains Gray and I cannot understand why. The message says only don't: "no pictures to import", or if the photos are displayed in the central panel, I can't select them. When I tried to manually copy the main folder on the new external drive, I lost all my data catalog for them (of course) but may not know how to apply the catalog pictures in the new location. Now, I'm pretty nervous about any future occasion where I really lose my main storage location and need to collect photos and backup catalog. I tried the user manual and tried to search the web, but no luck yet. Can anyone say about that?

    Images are only once imported into Lightroom. What import points Lightroom processes where they are stored in your system. After that, it is simply a process of moving images when necessary. The best thing to do is to import once and leave the images in this place. But in your situation it seems that if the travel is necessary to allow you to host more images.

    There are two different methods of sequence animated images in Lightroom. Since they are already imported and available in the catalog, you cannot use the import dialog box. Instead, you can go to the library module and find the folder you want to move the folder tree in the left panel and drag it to the other disk if it is available in the library folder tree. I think you will find that this is the method recommended in the literature of Lightroom which is available. However, it seems that when you use this method a few images for a reason any does not move. So, there is another method that I personally prefer.

    My preferred method is to use Windows Explorer or the Finder to move the images to a new location. In doing so, I suggest you move records or folder trees if possible. When you open Lightroom after moving files Lightroom will indicate that the files are missing. But do not panic. All that is necessary is to right-click on the highest folder Lightroom indicates is missing and choose find missing files. Then you will be presented with a dialog box that you will navigate on the new hard drive and find the folder and choose this location. Once you have chosen the new location that everything will sync and your work can continue.

    As I mentioned previously, it is really best if you must never pass images. But to absolutely it is relatively simple to do. If you want to only move a few images in a folder, it is possible to highlight images in the library grid and drag to another folder in the folder hierarchy. But if you do a vast movement of my preferred method is probably more reliable. Here is a page of instructions that might help you understand the process of searching for the files or missing files, here are the instructions on how to get things synchronized again:

  • Storage location of camera

    I can't set my phone to automatically save the photos on the SD card.

    I know have the SanDisk 32 gb SD card mounted with success because it shows on deposit and I can move pictures manually.

    The show of support pages will the camera app to set the storage location but there isn't this option - "move it to the SD card" is grayed out.

    What Miss me?

    The "Move to SD card" option in settings > Apps > camera is an option to move the camera App on the SD card, not the images it takes. However the camera app is one of the applications that you can't get out on the SD card, so gray.

    To select the card SD as a destination for all your photos open camera > drag the screen from left to right and you will see a semicircle of options > turn these options until you see the SD card icon > select "SD card" in the option to phone or SD card.

    Record storage destination is defined and can be sharing network anywhere. Registration of server temporarily stores the recordings on the spot and then transfers it to the final storage location.

  • Question of location/duplicate the catalog files

    I need assistance with my location of the catalog.  I restored from backup after resetting my computer.  Now, I have original photos on a D drive and I have a copy (maybe not a complete copy) on the C drive.

    I already had my catalog and my original photos on D (I think).

    Now when I add new photos, where should I put them?  I would like to put it on D, but all other pictures in the catalogue are on C.

    I would like to have everything on D and do not have a copy of everything.

    I don't want to lose one of the photos on D that are not in the catalog for a reason any.

    JoeBusher wrote:

    I opened the catalog of pse14 to move D:\Pictures 04 04 2015\Joe (1 mod 23/11/15 285 MB).  The properties for the pictures are all over D.

    I also opened pse14 catalog at C:\Photoshop\Joe 1 (375MB mod 25/12/15).  Those are all on C.

    Thank you for your help.  I feel that we are making progress.  What should I do next?

    First, use the catalog to D: now to import new files. Make sure you set your preferences to import files from the card or the scans to the D: drive.

    Then you can compare what is on C: and D: catalog to make sure that they are the same. You can use the Explorer / Finder to remove duplicates for free space on C:.

    I guess that you always backup folder that you have used before: keep to make sure you have extra security before you do the cleaning on C:.

    You can delete unwanted catalogs since the Organizer catalog manager.

  • Workflow question

    I have a question and I would be very interested to hear the opinions of experienced users.

    When you create a montage composed of many individual scenes the typical workflow would be to have a project and begins to run accumulate all the scenes or create projects for each scene and then bring them all together later.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Mark,

    You can create different locations to organize your clips at import and then just create a new sequence for each 'scene' that you want to work, so really you have just several chronologies by tabs that you can switch between. The sequences will be returned as elements in the tray and can be moved to a timeline. So just "assemble" the finished scenes assemble you clips in a timeline. Nice, it works! I'm going to break big marriages in Preps, ceremony, Park, front desk, for example, Recap and then just put it all together at the end for export.

    Glad I could help

  • Another instant storage location

    Hi experts,

    We currently have a virtual environment with daily snapshots running on all virtual machines. I got two part question.

    1. where the snapshots are kept?

    2. is there a way to change the location of snapshots. At the end of the day, I want snapshots to be stored on a storage on its own device.

    I don't know if that makes sense... :|

    Thank you!

    Kevin

    As other posters mentioned, instant should only be retained as long as necessary.

    1. where the snapshots are kept?

    By default snapshots are stored in the home folder of the virtual machine. No matter where you place the vmdk.

    2. is there a way to change the location of snapshots. At the end of the day, I want snapshots to be stored on a storage on its own device.

    Yes, it is possible to set a different location (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002929), but I think you won't be happy with what you're trying to do. This is because the snapshots in VMware are chained with the base vmdk disk. In other words, during the race, a virtual machine with all the shadow copies are used by the virtual machine. Therefore, you must place the snapshots on the same storage preference. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015180

    I don't know if that makes sense... :|

    I think that it is not.

  • Custom workflow - Question of API

    I am trying to create a custom workflow that requires two trusts (in parallel) at the level of the operation. Approval is a member of a static organization called App managers, the other is responsible for the applicant user. My question is what do I do to create such a flow of work?

    I have read this document:

    http://www.Oracle.com/WebFolder/technetwork/tutorials/OBE/FMW/OIM/oim_11g/developing_oim_custom_approval_process_for_self_registration/developing_oim_custom_approval_process_for_self_registration.PDF

    But I need to the approval workflow of level automatic query, against having a system of directors select the Organization issue.

    In addition, in order to find the applicant user's Manager, what should I do? Is the change in the java custom code in Appendix A? If so, are there that documents more detailed for the IOM API? I've been able to locate the 9g API doc.

    Thank you for your help in advance.

    Creating the level of approval of application policy, you can set it for automatic approval.

    To find the User Manager you need to perform a search using thor/IOM api, then get "Users.Manager Login" attribute. Here are the highlights

    tcUserOperationsIntf moUserUtulity = getIOUtilityFactory.getUtility (...);
    Hashtable MhSearchCriteria = new Hashtable();
    mhSearchCriteria.put ("Users.User ID", username);
    tcresult moResultset = (mhSearchCriteria) moUserUtulity.findUsers;

    for (int i = 0; i)< moresultset.getrowcount();="" i++)="">

    moResultSet.goToRow (i);
    String userManager = moResultSet.getStringValue ("Users.Manager Login");

    }

  • Xmp files storage location

    Hello

    I load my fotos (Canon's CR2 raw format) of the flah card in a folder on my computer that is independent from Lightroom

    subsequently import this file in my catalog of 'work' for the development (cut, contrast, brightness, etc.). Finally I export them in the respective folders regarding the content. I have all my folders to organize by my own in my drive D Partition system hard and don't make any use of the Windows libraries in the C Partition

    I started this workflow with Lightroom 5 years and I've always found the files xmp created with the fotos original raw on the file from which I had imported.

    Fotos, which I had deleted via Lightroom, were also successfully removed from this folder to import.

    However, since a few weeks, but one some time after starting to work with LR 6, this does no more work. I found, that Lightroom creates a single additional folder to the title of "Libraries", which contains a copy of the photos, the respective xmp - with each import files and was not wanted photos are removed, while the original photos in the import folder remain intact.

    A number of reasons, I would like to return to the previous work, but have so far not found of somehow do so via the change of settings.

    I pray for a useful comment.

    Concerning

    Peter

    I suggest that review you your workflow. You will need to place all images in this folder structure you like and leave there, transformed, altered, or not.

    To move one folder to another and remove them one catalog and imported into another are the worst thing you can do. Everything that's confusing LR and you, as you have discovered.

    There are features in LR for the Organization of your images and more as you want. Take a look at the smart Collections, standard collections and keywords to organize images. All this with the system of filtration in LR.

    Strength of Lightroom is to have all the images in one catalog. So you need never to seek around in different catalogues to find an image. They are all there in a catalog. In my catalog, there are personal pictures, work-related images (I am a supervisor of construction, master carpenter and cabinetmaker) and images I did for people like paid photographer (although those that are rare). All of these images are in different folders, depending on whether they are for and on different disks connected to my computer. But they are all in a single catalog LR.

  • LR Workflow question (external hard drive)

    Hello world

    I just started to really use LR correctly and love it. I am currently using structures of folders on my mac, at importation and his good work, however I only have a small HD on my mac so ideally want to move some of the files to an external hard drive. My question is what is the best way to do this? I understand that I can move the folder to an external hard drive, but is it the right way to do because my collection will then be shared between two places and some not saved if that makes sense?

    I have attached a screenshot so I hope it makes more sense

    Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 20.19.59.png

    To move the pictures to a different HD:

    1. In your operating system, (STILL) COPY photos to a new HD, keep the entire unchanged file hierarchy
    2. In Lightroom, do a right-click on the top-level folder and select the location of the update folder and then point to the new location of the top-level (parent) folder
    3. When you are 100% sure that it worked correctly, you can remove photos on the original hard drive.

    More details and screenshots, are found in part 2 of this document: Adobe Lightroom - find folders and files moved or missing

    Related issue: most of the people do not take the photos exported, not only it saves hard drive space, but it's less work than the export of all

  • Color grading workflow question

    Lets say I want to color grade my Final Cut project, should I rank each RAW has clips individually then FCP edit? If you rank each RAW file would not take too much time since I use only a part of the raw clip? or do I have to import this project FCP together, under the leadership, to the rank of sequels? How you color grade each individual clip when after effects recognize your Assembly as a single item?

    Traditionally, the color adjustment is the last step of a project before final delivery.

    The reasons: any other way to train a lot useless AE make time and disk space excessive to store redundant images.

    It IS possible to do as you wish.

    Just make sure you have 1) time and 2) storage to your workflow preferences.

  • workflow question and professional license

    My client needs to convert his plate Group print in a digital version of its Web site and tablets for its sales team on iPad. I have two questions:

    I have some questions:

    (1) Wich Workflow its the best for Web site and the digital edition at the same time?

    -Creation of a folio integrating content (text / images / animations) for digital publishing

    -Integration of a file of the same folio HTML so that the customer has the HTML version of its Web site.

    (2) if I enter a HTML file, if I do it in Adobe Muse, will it work in all browsers especially on IE 9 to 11, Mozilla, Chrome?

    (3) PURCHASE PROFESSIONAL LICENSE?

    Knowing that I don't have enough money to invest now in a license, he's very smart, the printer company takes this license for a single publication?

    (3) USE

    Or if my customer (communication agency) buys a professional Adobe DPS license, is limited to a publication there or they could publish to several different customers? In other words, the use of the Professional license that is valid for several clients at the same time (in mono-folio or multifolio) or a single client?

    You already have another post about your first and second questions, someone will probably answer them in this other post.

    3. Yes, it is possible (and probably better) than your customer to buy the license for DPS directly instead of you, since it is their publication.

    4. the license they buy will allow them to create an application for a publication. If they want to create additional applications for additional publications they will pay an additional fee for each application they create. It's okay if it's their application or application they create for someone else.
