  • How to: recover disk space by removing the updates of windows installation files

Original title : Software updates to XP Pro do take the disk space that can be reclaimed by removing downloaded files?

I want to recover disk space which can have useless files.  Once an update is installed, the downloaded file can be deleted and if so, where they are on my drive?

Please note this is only for Windows XP and is not on Vista or Windows 7

Folders that have uninstall as part of the name (for example $NtUninstallKB282010$ who reside in C:\windows (hidden files) are window Hot difficulty updating folders/files) can be removed safely (providing ever, you wish to uninstall the updates). I recommend you leave these records for a period of at least one month to make sure that the update works correctly.

These updates can be removed individually or together. To learn more about the update/s go on:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/xxxxxx
NB: XXXXXX = the actual number, not to mention the "Q" or "Ko."

Once you have removed the uninstall folders/files, then go to control panel, add/remove programs. Select the title of the corresponding Windows fix on the folder/file of the patch you just deleted, and select Delete. You will get a Windows error. This is because you deleted the uninstall folder/files. Simply choose OK and the entry will be removed from the Add/Remove Programs list.

  • Updated since version 7 or 8 during the installation SETUP message - your computer must be restarted to complete a previous update of Firefox. Do you want to restart now?

Updated since version 7 or 8 during the installation SETUP message - your computer must be restarted to complete a previous update of Firefox. Do you want to restart now? Options are 'yes or no'. Option 'Yes' restarts my computer & the attempts to Firefox, I get the same message. Reboot several times has no effect. The option 'no' closes the file and nothing happens. Running XP Pro version 2002 SP 3. All normal programs have been updated to the current date (Adobe, Java, etc.).

Do a cleaning (re) install and delete the folder of the program Firefox (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).

Download a new copy of Firefox and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current version of Firefox if possible.

    • Do not remove the data of a personal nature when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.

Delete the program folder Firefox before installing newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

    • It is important to remove the Firefox program folder to delete all the files and make sure that there is no problem with the files that were the remains after uninstallation.

Your bookmarks and other profile data stored in the Firefox profile folder and will not be affected by a relocation, but make sure that you do not select delete data of a personal nature if you uninstall Firefox.

  • EeePC need to delete things to save space... can I put them back if I need to? and what about $hf_mig$?

    Hello

I have an eeepc that has a 4 GB only system drive.

I am trying to install SP3 and it says I don't have enough space for the files to uninstall.  If I remove the current uninstall previous updates files and store them on a separate computer, would I be able to put them if I have to uninstall something?  Or is there some kind of registry entry that would be affected?

Furthermore, I believe that it is very, very bad to delete the folder$ $hf_mig.  But since it is 219 MB and my system disk needs all the space it can get, is it possible to move my largest drive and perhaps change a registry entry to point to the new location?

  • Once I downloaded an update in Windows, delete the previous updates of my program files? Each update takes as much memory.

I am running xp, I increased my memory and Im trying to eliminate all unnecessary programs.  Any other suggestions?

Uninstalling programs can save you some disk space (very little),
but it won't do anything for your memory.

If you are short on disk space, almost everything you do will be nothing
but a stopgap measure. You will arrive soon in the same
situation. The only real solution is to buy a larger hard drive.

  • CAN I get rid of the updates that are show; pping in Vista. I see in Windows 7 which is can remove old updates that are not needed. Can I do this with Vista?

I am able to remove the old window of Dates in Windows 7 that overlap, when you go on the cleaning disc and touch clean system files, then the update windows clean up rises.  Then, you are able to remove the old of the dates that are no longer needed. This saves space.  Can I do this with Windows Vista?  If so, how?

    Hello

This is the information from Microsoft about this:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/2852386/en-us

"Cleaning Windows Update option is available only when the Disk Cleanup Wizard detects the updates of Windows you don't need on the computer."

This is only for Windows 7 and above.

Loy Vista doesn't have this option of cleaning disc for Windows Updates and in all probability that Microsoft will not implement what Vista is now in Extended Support.

By default system restore also includes 15% of the capacity of your hard disk under Vista space.

You can clean your hard drive using these two methods.

    Using the free CCleaner program:

  • Reader XI Customization Installation Wizard does not remove previous versions

Downloaded the installer msi drive XI and XI Customization Wizard.

Created installtion STD and setup.ini files, and specified to remove previous versions of the wizard.

Recorded this and deployed to test machines via WSUS server and third party software, Local Publishser updated and included the mst and ini files update package in.

    XI player installed.

    Reacer 10.1.4 is not uninstalled.

Checked again and uninstall all previous versions of the player is selected.  Documentation indicates that any version 6 upwards will be uninstalled, but it didn't happen.

What else is needed for the old version to uninstall when XI is installed?

    TIA

    Rick

    Hi Rick,

Try to close the Customization Wizard and he raises. Open the same drive package again.does the box remove previous drive appear checked? If Yes, then it should certainly delete the previous version of the player either 10.1.4

If on the reopening of the whole, the Remove previous drive checkbox unchecked then check and save the package. Now when installing this package, previous drive is removed. I just checked myself!

  • Remove the update for iPhoto abandoned

I show you an update on my page of updates - iPhoto, which was abandoned in favor of pictures. This means that my AppStore still says that I have an update to do. How can I remove this update of the page?

There is an older version of iPhoto installed on your Mac. You may remove if you use is no longer. Alternatively, you can right-click the update in the App Store (not the button itself, but in some right to empty space next to it), and then you should see an option "hide update".
