  Your friends drive is most likely a "Retail" XP version which has its own product key. In most cases, you can reinstall XP using 'Reticular' media and then activate with your OEM. Is that what you did?

• BIOS Inspiron 2305 does not detect the drive in ahci mode

  The hard drive in my Inspiron one 2305 crushed and I tried to install a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda drive.

  The Bios does not detect the drive. I noticed that the SATA in the BIOS mode option has been put on AHCI. I changed the ATA mode and the BIOS has detected the drive.

  However when I try to install a clean version of Windows 7 (Dell OEM disc), to halfway to the installation Setup will fail. I noticed that the reason why it will fail, is that the installation process now does not see the hard drive.

  Can someone tell me what steps to take to do the installation?

  Although I was not able to swap the Sata cables as natacuk4 suggested; It looks like just unplug and reinstallation of cables Sata what it did the trick!

  This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don't be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

  Step 1

  Select the feedback connections* and log in as a guest. Do not use the Safari connection only 'user comments' created by 'find my Mac '.

  While signed in as a guest, you will have access to your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you use them for the first time. Do not be alarmed by this behavior; It's normal.   If it still doesn't work there are some registry changes that can try to alleviate the problem.  But because the changes to the registry are tedious and dangerous, I recommend to leave the system to repair it for you.  Here's how:
